Congratulations Kit!

We don't give a shit WHAT those fakakta judges said. WE think your design was the clear winner this week.
Surprised, readers? Based on the comments to the previous posts, nearly everybody seems to think that either Sweet P or Chris got robbed out of the win and many assumed that we thought so too. Fear not. We have nice things to say about their dresses, but this dress just blew us away.
First, she gave her client, who said she chose Kit because she wanted something with an edge to it, exactly what she wanted. So few of the designers did that this week that we have to pay her the compliment.
Second, once again, the styling is superb. She took a real girl - who is naturally pretty, it needs to be said - and made her look like a model.
Just a note about the previous sentence before anyone gets their panties all twisted. When we say "real girl" or "real woman" we mean just that. We don't mean "fat girl" or "ugly woman." Models are genetic freaks and if you ever see one in person, you know what we mean. What we mean is, they're almost always outrageously tall and thin and tend to have highly unusual bone structure that photographs or lights well. They're also trained to know how to wear clothing in the best, most dramatic way and show it off to its best advantage. That's why they're models. And that's why Tim and the judges and the designers draw that distinction whenever it comes up.
We were utterly flabbergasted when they shuffled her off the runway without a word about her dress. She took real risks in every area - the color, the execution, the style - and those risks paid off.
It's just such a uniquely beautiful and striking dress. Plus, it's young and colorful and flirty. It's not that it couldn't be worn by an older woman but it looks to us like it's perfectly suited for a younger one. It has that slightly edgy quality that young women can get away with easier, yet it's coupled with a classic silhouette which gives it a more refined, and yes, expensive look to it.
Here are some minor criticisms: the bust is beautifully executed except it looks slightly off-center (although that could be a posture issue and not a fit one) and the straps are attached to the waist somewhat inelegantly.
Also, it could be argued that this doesn't look formal enough for a prom.
On the latter point, we don't entirely agree. As we said earlier, prom styles come and go and not every girl wants the floor length gown, nor does every girl look good in one. This is a great style for a girl who's got some curves and wants to show off her legs.
And the back is just as lovely as the front.
We said earlier that Kit was too much the eternal bridesmaid (and we're a little afraid to reiterate that point because look what happened when we said the same about Kevin) but even if this dress wasn't good enough for a win, for the judges to ignore it completely not only doesn't make sense to us, it feels like a real slap in the face to Kit.
This dress was stylish, up-to-the-minute fashionable, colorful, youthful and had a slight edge to it. Which is ironic...
...because little Miss Preppy McPrepperson couldn't have been more middle-of-the road if she tried. Kudos on your date, girl! Did he turn out to be gay?

I like the back of this dress better than the front. I hear you guys and always appreciate your opinions and comments yet there is something about the front of this dress that speaks "overalls" to me. Or "suspenders"? But I'm all about Kit for the WIN. Of the whole, ahem, kit and caboodle. Have been since Day One. (although I love me some Christian Drama). :D
Yay! I really liked this dress, too (although those colors -on me- would be wrongwrongwrong), and would have loved one, way back when. Actually, I'd probably wear something like it now, too.
My two favorite looks this week by a landslide were Chris and Kit. I had picked Chris for the win because his dress was more "prom" to me, but I'd have been perfectly happy seeing either of them walk away with it. I was flabbergasted that they both got sent off the runway in the first cut.
You know, I just knew you boys were gonna like Kit's the best out of everyone's.
Don't get me wrong I think it's a cute dress - I loved the blue (almost the same color as my prom dress way back when), I think it's got a great sillouette (sp?), it's nicely constructed and like you said - it really flatters an everyday girl and makes her look like a model. Something which some of the other designers (Kevin) failed to accomplish.
It's just, well, the panelling in the chest reminds me of that color block error screen that TV's get - I think it looks a bit out of place and... just... odd. That and it's a weird material - too shiny. It's like the whole thing is made of ribbons from the dollar store.
This was one of my two favorites for the week -- the other being Sissybear, of course. So much so that when they started calling names to "step forward" and they were both included, I was CONVINCED that was going to be the people who would stay on the runway. The judges, they are high.
Sorry, this garment simply did not impress me the way it did you boys. It seemed very safe, very ... middle of the road. A girl wants to be beautiful, elegant, "stunning" at her prom. This looks like a perfectly nice garden party dress ... not for a formal.
My boyfriend and I said the same thing when this outfit came down the catwalk ... "Girrrl is rockin' the Rainbow Gay flag on her boobs."
I love the use of color on the bodice of this dress. It is a little different, but not so different that a girl wearing it to her prom would be ostracized by her peers for being too different. Kit is an unsung talent on PR.
(Okay, not unsung on this blog, I mean ignored by the gang of three plus guest judge who, week after week, don't appear to be watching the same runway as we are!)
My biggest complaint about this dress, and why I would not have gone for it for a win, is that it is not "prom" enough. It looks a bit like a bridesmaid dress, or one that you'd get for an event with one's parents. That being said, it was beautifully done, it fit the client both physically and personality-wise, and is probably exactly what this girl would want to wear to prom. And given that when Kit first described the dress I thought it would be the fugliest one, I think she created a wonderful piece - and at least an equal to VictorYa's.
The girl looked gorgeous in that dress. Definitely one of my favorite dresses!
Yes. Surprised. I thought for sure you meant Chris. But Kit did make a great dress, and I hadn't even noticed the back before.
Problem is, now I keep seeing a TV test pattern (thanks anon 11:23!). Oh well, it's still lovely.
I liked this dress on the runway, less in pictures tho. the front straps make her look like she's the milkmaid with the straps, but not the jugs...
It's different - not your typical prom dress - and that's EXACTLY what the model wanted. Something edgy, Kit-esque....great job, I love this dress!
The dress was not at all to my taste in terms of color choices, so I can't say I loved it, but I agree that she was the designer who best accomplished the goals of making something that was both fashion forward and flattering, and appropriate to the client and the event it was for.
That girl's figure looks fantastic, she looks prom ready, and that isn't anything she could buy at Jessica McClintock. I agree that it should have been a serious contender for the win. I loved Chris's and Sweet P's, but while they had little unique twists and details (especially Chris's), let's be honest, they were still a bit generic.
I didn't like this one when I saw it on the runway. The back of this dress is beautiful, but there is something about the straps in the front that seems disruptive to me. I do love the blue color though (very similar to Victorya's color that the judges lapped up).
I can see a girl out on the dance floor in this one, it has great movement. I can't say the same for Victorya. How do you dance in that bubble skirt without it riding up to your hoohaw. I wish the judges would have taken that into consideration when judging the gowns.
It looks a bit like she's got a trapper-keeper jammed down the front of her dress.
I completely disagree with you, boys, but that's okay. I still love you.
I probably don't like this dress because I HATE that shade of blue.
But it's well made, pretty, and is what the client asked for, so Kit wins in all those categories.
I still think Chris was the true winner.
surely you jest.
it's a pretty dress, yes. but it looks like summer evening go for drinks and dancing dress.
prom? hardly. not even close, no matter how styles have changed.
but then what do i know? i spent the night of senior prom sitting in the grass with my much older post-high school hippie friends smoking dope and laughing at the parading couples.
Wow, Kit's date looks right out of Mystery Date!
I didn't like this dress at all; okay, the back is nice, but the rest is unflattering and blah. Not a traditional prom dress, true, but pretty middle of the road otherwise. I didn't like the styling, either--too severe. C'est la freakin' vie.
Considering Kit's personality (or at least what is presented to us on TV) and her style, she did an amazing job respecting the client's needs and giving her something unique, that does look like her designs and that made the client look beautiful and classy without resorting to the usual goddesses' gowns.
it's a pretty dress, yes. but it looks like summer evening go for drinks and dancing dress.
Which is exactly what a lot of girls want in a prom dress. It seems like a lot of you think teenage girls want to dress up like Barbie. That might have been true in your day but its not true anymore.
I didn't care for Kit's dress that much because it seemed more like a guest-of-the-wedding/bar-mitzvah than it did a prom dress. But then, I haven't been to a prom in a long time, so I don't know the current styling. I was also kind of meh on the stripes. But I do like the back, and I don't recall seeing it that clearly on the runway.
I loved this dress and thought she was top 3 for sure. The one thing I didn't like was the odd strap detail.
Also, her client looked kinda unhappy. Nerves, maybe? Uncomfortable on stage, maybe? Or did she dislike the dress? Don't know, but I wondered why she seemed kinda upset. If she didn't like the dress, it wasn't because Kit didn't listen or try to combine her aesthetic with client's desires while still working within the confines of what would be attractive on her client- and she won that in spades.
This was an elegant, flirtatious, sassy and flattering dress and should have been top 3, if not won.
"It seems like a lot of you think teenage girls want to dress up like Barbie. That might have been true in your day but its not true anymore."
I think there is formal and there is not-formal. Period. Girls may want to wear Daisy-Dukes and flip-flops to a prom ... that doesn't make it "prom wear."
Completely agreed - Kit was the clear winner for me.
i loved the back of this dress -- i wish the color on the front had the same subtle quality.
and i have to say, with all due respect to the girl, that it didn't really flatter her figure. that bodice looks constrained in all the wrong ways.
OK, OK. I see the point. Kit's is more unusual and "fashion forward". It is a really pretty dress.
But Chris's was drop dead gorgeous - and didn't have ANY execution problems.
I will add a big SNORT to your last line there. If he didn't turn out to be gay, he sure landed on a golf course (or both).
"I think there is formal and there is not-formal. Period."
Well thank goodness you don't get to have a say because plenty of girls today want SEMI-formal. go check out a prom line some time. It's not all princess gowns.
My first time commenting because I'm so happy about this post--I totally agree! At first I wasn't sure whether I wanted Kit's dress so badly because I like Kit, or because it was the best dress. Now I'm convinced it really was the best. Thanks, guys!
Wow, I'm really not seeing what you're seeing at all. I agree with the color bars and Barbie comments. The color on the bust just looks like a gimmick to me. It does give her an hourglass figure, tho, and that is nice.
It might be my monitor, but the hem looks exactly like Kevin's.
"Tlo said: We don't give a shit WHAT those fakakta judges said."
I second that emotion; that the judges are fercockt (the actual spelling). They are also fermisht, ferdrayt & fershimilt. They are a just bunch of fershinkiners, fershtay?
That being said, I would have given the win to Chris.
This dress, I would have put in 2nd place. I did love the way the skirt flowed & the use of color on the top. But I think that the problem Kit had with the judgges was that, because of the colorblock pattern, the judges couldn't figure out what to make of it.
The same thing often happens when people are looking at abstract art: They either over-praise it or under-praise it, in an effort to cover the fact that they are really not so secure in their own taste or knowledge.
--GothamTomato
Though I think I would have chosen Chris for the win on this challenge, I cannot help but think Kit MAY have gotten some real praise that was just edited out.
I wish Bravo on line showed the episode without editing it within an inch of its 42:25 life.
"I said: The same thing often happens when people are looking at abstract art: They either over-praise it or under-praise it, in an effort to cover the fact that they are really not so secure in their own taste or knowledge."
I was refering to the judges (with the over & under praising), not you boys. Hope that was clear.
--GothamTomato
Really? Are you serious? I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. I thought this dress was hideous. The only good thing was the construction.
Those stripes on the front are what ruins it. They make it look like Darth Vader or something from the 80's that Suzanne Sugarbaker would wear.
This dress was totally bugly (butt ugly). I hated it and on the runway, I had picked it to be one of the bottom 3. I cannot believe this wasn't in the bottom. Hideous
I feel like I've fallen into PRG Twilight Zone and I can't get up.
I liked this dress, I guess. For something. Like going shopping. Or something. Not for prom.
Sigh, it was such an odd week in PR land.
Kit is my homegirl. 8)
This was my second favorite, after Chris'! But that's just because it doesn't really scream "Prom!" to me.
I think it deserved to be in the top 3 (along with Chris and Jillian), but should have been excused, like Jillian's, for having weird boobs. I think the dress, while well executed and pretty on its own, makes the girl look like she has enormous, wall-eyed breasts. And yeah, those straps have kind of a suspender thing going on.
I'm so totally out of my element with these Prom Dress discussions.
To me, they were all kind of boring and lame, although some were way worse than others.
I look at Kit's dress and have no idea where to even start.
All of the designs were kind of shoulder-shruggy for me this week. I guess when you're designing for suburban teenagers, the innovation and loopiness has to get toned down, but I just have almost no reaction at all to these pieces.
Am I missing something?
I think this dress was cute as all get out but I still would have picked sissy b. or sweet pea for the win. Mainly because it they were true prom dresses but done well and looked modern. I do love Kit. I want to see her and Chris and Christian/Rami in the final 3.
CPK
Although I liked Kit's design, I wasn't crazy about the color choice.
Frankly the judges should look at the winning auction prices on these episodes to see what people really want in fashion. So far the most money made ($500) was on Elisa's design for SJP! And get this...Sweet Pea is currently in the lead for prom night($325), followed by Chris ($250) whereas Victorya's "winner" is a measly $85.
And if you check the past auctions, Sweet Pea's designs in almost every episode (minus the men's wear one) have made more money than Victorya's. Interesting!!!
I'm in with the pretty-dress-but-not-really-a-prom-dress crowd on this one. It's great that she gave her client what she wanted, but at the same time, it didn't seem to quite meet the parameters of the challenge.
I think a special event dress like a prom dress (or, say, a bridesmaid dress) is something that you would expect to see only at a similar event: it's not designed to be versatile. She could wear that dress to any party or on many dates, and it would just be a great dress.
The first thing I thought of when I saw this dress was TV colorbars too!
Its cute but not what I would wear to prom but what do I know, I'm 35 yrs old!
BTW, did anyone think they were zooming down the catwalk? I didn't really get to see the dresses that well cause they were going too fast!
That dress is horrid. Those breast panels look like the grill of a '55 Buick or the front of a gay pride parade float. Whatever it is, it is wrong, wrong.
Didn't like it at all.

The front of that dress is straight up SHOW CHOIR. Not appropriate for prom, but would be fierce in a show choir competition. Particularly if that skirt ripped away to reveal a red one underneath.
You boys are off the mark this time. There are a million dresses like this in show choirs across the midwest.
Love the new pic Alex. It's kinda Dylanesque (Bob that is) looking. Very cute, too bad you don't like prison pussy :(
Oh, Yeah, I'll bet you that her date turned out gay. He sure looks the part. But most cool girls in school are drawn to the gay boys because most of us have natural style and charm. Girls eat that shit up.
"BTW, did anyone think they were zooming down the catwalk? I didn't really get to see the dresses that well cause they were going too fast!"
Yes, it was kind of adorable how stiff and determined they were--as most any of us would be. Kinda makes you appreciate professional models more -- it's not as easy as they make it look.
If Kit and Chris aren't 2 of the people at Bryant Park in the finale, I'll be sad.
I had to google "show choir" and this was the first photo I found. Pretty funny (in terms of the color esp)! (it's actually more like Victorya's dress though):

GT said, "I second that emotion; that the judges are fercockt (the actual spelling). They are also fermisht, ferdrayt & fershimilt. They are a just bunch of fershinkiners, fershtay?"
Not to mention ferblungit. And sometimes I suspect they're a little fershnooshkit.

I don't think the auction prices necessarily mean anything. There's no way of knowing who is bidding and/or why. I believe Michael Jackson once bought the Elephant Man's bones at auction. Maybe he's buying the dresses so he can have his own PR re-enactments.
--GothamTomato
if you google "prom dress" you'll see that this length is very popular. Alot of the dresses just look like party dresses. Proms arent as formal as they used to be. it all depends on the girl.
The straps totally ruin the dress for me. It frames her boobs really strangely.

Hilarious GothamTomato. Or in the spirit of Michael Kors "or the Elepant Man's bones doing PR re-enactments". ;)
Ok, I'll stop dominating this entry w/ my comments now. :D
woah, we totally disagree, here.
My daughter graduated in 2004. Everyone's dress was either very formal or very hoochie. No party or semi-formal dresses.
Different parts of the country (I'm Ohio) have different trends, though.
Personally I thought the front panel looked like Nautica's emblem. The silouette is very nice, but top 2? Maybe top 3rd.
The Auctions prices are an indication of public opinion. That's not very difficult to corrolate.
And no, Sweet P is not bidding on her own garments.
I really liked the dress, but i agree with several of the other comments that i just don't see it as a prom dress. i'm sure prom-wear is somewhat regional, but when i see the kids in our area (orange county, so. cal) they are wearing dressier things than that. (and i see ALOT of them -- our neighborhood has a fountain down the street and they all line up there to have pix taken). not all are full length, but they just somehow look more elegant.
that said, i really like kit's work -- she is definitely on my list for making it to bryant park. i just still think chris should have won this one.
This is the dress that both of my daughters would wear to a prom. Like the Jersey girls, we're in an upscale suburb of a major city. They also both loved Chris' though my extremely fashion-conscious college freshman said that Victorya's general idea was very "right now."
I watched the fashion show part again last night and am still stunned that Kit and Chris were sent off the runway without so much as a, "Nice job, kids."
Right on, brothers!
All this blather about a "girl's most important evening". Whatever. This is one cool prom dress and the girl who wears this wouldn't get lost in the crowd.
Are they ignoring Kit because her work seems so organic? Most stuff we've seen this season looks just too belabored (and that's the success stories!)
Once again I feel the same as when Kara's flower boustier thingie got completely ignored.
She's way overdue for a win.
I worship this blog, but you guys are totally, totally, totally wrong here. Kit's dress is definitely lunch at Barney's with Carrie, Miranda, and Samantha wear...but certainly not the least bit formal.
I watched this episode again on Thursday, and I believe the judging was correct. Kevin's dress was CLEARLY the worst in this challenge, but I would have had he and Ricky in the bottom two and gotten rid of Ricky due to overall performance. As annoying as she is, VictorYa deserved the win. Watch that dress in the light as the model leaves the runway. It's beautiful.
I have to admit that I rather liked Kits dress ,as she has always been one of my heart of heart faves, but I really wanted something edgier from her.
I think prom dresses should be whatever the wearer wants them to be,vintage, punk princess, sophisticated sexy, grecian goddess......
...this time none of the designers wowed me,and I had such high hopes after the candy dressses!
I don't see what's "edgy" about this. It's not even particularly different. Better than VictorYa's, sure, but that's not saying much. Kit tends more toward punk, and this is not even vaguely reminiscent of punk. I would've been very sad if I were Kit's model.
We'll have to disagree on this one, since I felt Sissy Bear should have won. But Kit would have been definitely in the top 3.
I really didn't like how the straps of the dress were attached, and thought that the tri-colored band was interesting, though it clashed a bit against the blue she chose for the main color of the dress.
The back---now that back really bears a 2nd look.
Underrated garment by the judges.
~Maharhar
wow. i have to really disagree with you boys.
i did not like this dress. she looks like she has lifesaver candies for tits. it's weird. not cute. not expensive. not prom.
i'll give kit credit for cut and shape. but she lost me on the bust. the colors were too flashy, and not in a nice way. i don't even think the colors are all that great on the client. i expected better from kit. this was blah. if not, kind of an eyesore.
Blech. Don't like the dress b/c the stripes on the bust look so silly to me.
I had almost forgotten about Kit's dress. Maybe because the judges whooshed her away with SissyBear and the others after the first call to step forward. Kit's work has been consistently good. No "stuff" about her too.
SissyBear and Sweet P's dresses remain my favorites for this challenge, but thanks for reminding me what a great dress Kit made.
I have to argee with Alex! I was somewhat disappointed with all of the gowns this week. I thought everybody would do something fantastic and original. I mean $250 is a lot of money to spend on the fabric alone the gowns should have looked like $1000 or more retail.
I think Kits gown would have been prettier if she had eliminated the black on the front bodice and handled the color blocking the way she did on the back. I think she did an excellent job of flattering her clients tiny little teenage waist.
As far as what is formalwear vs. not, there really isn't a hard core definition. Formalwear is what society deems it is.
Damn, Gotham Tomato! I should be weaving - but now I have to look up:
fercockt,
fermisht,
ferdrayt. and
fershimilt
And of course find ways to use them in my daily conversation. Thanks a lot - I had high hopes of getting some stuff done today. Thanks for all the laughs in this fabulous blog.
No. Not a winner. Perfectly fine, but not nearly a winner.
I am not a fan of patch work. or color mixing.
but its very well done.
It givers her curves and she looks good in it!
To add to the chorus of "it made me think of" -- Kit's panels made me think of the original (i.e. bad) Star Trek. You know, "I am Olana, daughter of Krisso, ruler of this planet. You are Kirk, James T. Mate with me to save my planet." Then it turns out the the panel actually beams radiation that poisons people, or some such thing.
But, references aside, for a clothing typology like a prom dress, if one does something eccentric, it must be just so--or at least have a lot of chutzpah. Kit's multicolor panels were the only eccentric thing about the dress, and but they weren't just so. They were so-so. Even you boyz comment that the panel seemed off-center and the strap connections (which frame the panel) seem awkward. So I'm afraid that I can't agree with your love of this creation.
On the other hand, on the same grounds I heartily agree with the condemnation of the winning dress. Its eccentricities--the bejeweled center panel and poofy hem--were gallingly imperfect, so very not so! It looked like a dress that the 17-yr-old might have made herself. That would have been great--she'd seem like a fairly talented girl, copping some looks she saw in the fashion mags, maybe a PR Season 8 contender. But to be the product of a "professional"?! No way.
It should have been Sweet P or Chris. Both dresses were beatifully made, with modest but perfect eccentricities. Also for either a win would have marked an impressive change of fate, which would give some needed drama/entertainment to the show.
I didn't really care for kit's this week.
I loved SissyBear's and Sweet P's.
You know, I really cannot believe they only kept 2 up there for the ones they liked. The judges are smoking something. Getting sick of the judging this season -- but of course, I'll continue to watch!! I'm not crazy!
Hey, in Entertainment Weekly's exit interview with Kevin he calls Christian "our little pocket gay."
I know we're talking about Kit, but I think Kevin's been checking out TLo.
This was my No. 3 fave (you KNOW Chris was No. 1 and Sweet P was a begrudging No. 2). If the bodice had gone on a little longer and if she had carried the color-block idea onto the skirt somehow (long, narrow vertical inserts maybe), then it would have been my No. 1. But she was on the right track, and it's a crime Kit was middle-of-the-roaded AGAIN.
Dean in NYC is right: show choir colors all the way. And i have to agree with Anonymous @ 11:18: It looks a bit like she's got a trapper-keeper jammed down the front of her dress. That's just hilarious. i saw that another site compared it to a traffic light!
i'm sorry, but edgy?? it's not edgy. Fun, maybe, but nicely banded, practically-primary colors do not an edgy dress make. This is a lovely, well-made garment, but it's not anything to scream about.
I agree. My top three looks this week were Chris's, Kit's, and Jillian's (all of whom weren't even considered for the win.) They were all dresses I could actually see at the prom (and as an 18 year old girl, I have experienced prom quite recently)
And if people would ever consider this dress to "cocktail party" or "wedding guest" instead of a Prom dress, Victorya's dress was even less of a Prom Dress.
Ugh! This blog is my only venue for seeing these designs, and I must say, so far all three dresses aren't even spit-worthy.
I need to see something cute fast.
Honestly, is it just me, or is this season depressing? The only design that truly stands out in my memory thus far is that red dress that won the candy competition last week.
Do any other countries air their own version of project runway?
Please post something about Malan to pull me out of this funk.
Sorry, this dress is just fugly to me. The architectural styling on the bodice and the color choices just still look like the store front of a Best Buy.
Also, out of curiosity I googled images using the key word "prom." Just a reality check for myself and sure enough, proms are still a formal event based on the images of girls at their proms and the dresses being hawked on the web. Kayne would have owned this challenge. =D
Meh, this dress just didn't do it for me. I echo the sentiments of the earlier commenter who said that it looks like she's wearing overalls. In fact, I thought that was the gimmick that Kit was going for. I think it's actually kind of unattractive, and the color blocks remind me of the pixels on a television.
This dress was not that great. I'm hoping that those from the midwest who read these comments will appreciate what I mean when I say that Kit's dress looks like something the girls in a high school show choir would wear.
I loved it. It's something I would totally wear for the prom.
The styling choices really hurt this dress. I thought the model's hair in that really tight, really slicked back bun looked really severe - and not youthful or fun or prommy. If her hair had even been unstyled (the way it looks in the photo with Kit) or somehow looser - I think it might have opened the judges (and audience's) eyes to how great this dress really is.
Of course, the judges were clearly high this week, so it might not have helped at all.
um....no Chris (or Sweet p) was robbed not Kit.
I do like Kit's but I see this as more as a homecoming or sophmore sweetheart...not prom.
I typically like what Kit designs
as her stuff fits my personal style. However I would have LOVED to have Chris dress for prom
I like this dress. I think it would be great for a homecoming dance or a semi formal dance, but just not prom. Not formal enough, at least for the high school my son goes to. That being said, I love that Kit is quietly passing through to each round, no major complaints from The Three. She will survive and prevail, I hope.
The fact that most people are still banging that Chris' and Sweet P's are gorgeous and the best gowns for a prom blah blah blah illustrates how provincial most Americans still are in terms of fashion.
Kit's and Victorya's are the future, folks!
Also, out of curiosity I googled images using the key word "prom." Just a reality check for myself and sure enough, proms are still a formal event based on the images of girls at their proms and the dresses being hawked on the web.
Let me help you out then (I hope these links work):

Some girls just want that short, cocktail, Carrie Bradshaw party dress. It's probably more of an urban prom look.
Yay! They worked!
You guys are all kinds of wrong on this. NOT a prom dress. Very cute, but not dress for the prom. I could see the fugly winning dress at a million proms, and I hated that dress. But this one is just not a dress for a prom. It might be seen at a school concert where every girl wears a different color or something. There are all sorts of ways to look "edgy" and I think Kit has sort of a Betsey Johnson vibe. But she missed the mark with this one!!

THANK YOU! I was about to do the same thing. And then they blame the judges for not knowing what a prom dress should look like. PLEASE!!! They come in all shapes and forms and styles. Wake up, folks!!!
Sorry boys, but I don't agree. Kit did a lot right here, but the dress doesn't say prom to me. It could have been submitted for any of the other challenges. Maybe some sparkle on the bodice or an longer, flowy skirt could have elevated it in formality.
Isn't this the same electric blue we've been reaming Vya for?
she looks like an RGB test pattern.
still, i have to agree with david. chris' and sweet P's gowns may have been well-made (or not, i wouldn't know), but i found them uninspiring. kit and victorya, on the other hand, showed dresses i personally found to be more original and fashion-forward.

YES, they're both blue BUT THEY'RE NOT THE SAME DRESS. Do you people hear yourselves?
I love the whole I didn't like it, I wouldn't wear it, therefore, everybody who liked it IS WRONG!!
And no, I never shopped for a prom dress, but I have several sisters (16-21 years old) and they all buy dresses all the time, including prom dresses.
Can we just interject here and say that we LOVELOVELOVE that this post is almost as controversial as the ACTUAL judges' decision?
Nina, eat your heart out!
The dress looks better in these pics than it did on the runway but honestly, I still think it's pretty meh. There doesn't appear to be anything particularly edgy or fashion forward about it at all and I hate the suspenders effect. If anything, seeing this dress again made me appreciate Victorya's which featured a very similar color but was much more fashion forward. Yes, Victorya seems to be a passive-aggressive bitch but I do see now why she won. Most people do just want a pretty dress but that doesn't work for fashion mag editors who want something "editorial," something that goes in a different direction. Victorya's dress was the only one that took any chances at all. And focusing on Kit's nothing-special dress helped me see that.
I think the perpetual-bridesmaid, middle-of-the-pack spot that Kit occupies is appropriate. Her work isn't bad but it's never quite interesting enough to me. I know she has a lot of fans but I have to think that people are responding to her personal style, none of which has come through in any of her designs except for the candy challenge. No way she's at Bryant Park, nor should she be.
i KNOW! I loved loved loved kit's dress and the back was muah!
Test pattern! That's what my friends saw!
Do not attempt to adjust your set. This is a prom dress. Repeat, this is only a prom dress.
I, too, liked the back better than the front (and I have a problem in general with electric blue formalwear, but that's me). C'est la vie
Not crazy about the blue, but I love the silhouette and the back. She looks stunning, like a model.
This was my favorite, too. I would have prefered another color combination(Someone wittily invoked Suzanne Sugarbaker) but overalll I thought it was the most original and approachable. Imagine a smart, friendly girl who already knows what she want to study in college, and who doesn't expect prom to be a huge, major event in her life. This would be her dress.
I'm not at all fond of the way the neck straps connect to the waistband; I just can't get past it. What I really noticed about this dress when I saw it on Bravo's "Rate the Runway" was the length -- it looks just right hitting at the knee. Short enough to be fun but not trying too hard.
Overall, not one of my favorites, but definitely good enough to make it to the next round.
"Some girls just want that short, cocktail, Carrie Bradshaw party dress. It's probably more of an urban prom look."
Thanks! But I really didn't need any help. My point is that only one out of every 4 to 6 girls in real event photos were wearing short dresses. None of these shorter dresses were as informal as Kit's dress was. I'm not going to add the links to this comment. It's my understanding that TLo doesn't want us doing that.

I thought the front looked like TV test bars. Ironic, since she keeps spouting that she was a TV stylist.
Sorry guys, I don't agree at all. This isn't a prom dress...period.
Its ok don't get me wrong but for going out to a nice restaurant for the first time or a summer formal affair, not prom.
Prom is about glamour and this just falls flat.
As for the normal girl looking like a model? Don't agree with you there either. The styling was atrocious and did nothing but emphasize her "deer in the headlights" look. The hair was WAY too severe for the shape of her face and the makeup was underwhelming to quote the duchess. All in all, I thought the styling was more Girls School Madam than a 16 year old on her way to prom.
"madame ovary said: Imagine a smart, friendly girl who already knows what she want to study in college, and who doesn't expect prom to be a huge, major event in her life. This would be her dress."
Hello!
Seriously, I think Dr. Phil has made a career out of talking to people who think the prom was the most important day of their life. Listen & learn.
--GothamTomato
People, people, people. If two pieces of fabric tie together anywhere on a dress the dress does not belong at the prom! Too casual.

Amen, sister!
HOORAY! Although Chris and Sweet P both made lovely dresses, this one stood out to me as the clear winner. This isn't a creation a girl can find in the usual prom boutique (still love you, Kayne)! The colors Kit used are GORGEOUS and I love the shape it gives her girl.
I love this dress!
It's one thing to say you don't like the dress but its amazing how many people are flatly declaring that this is not a prom dress. Some of you have very narrow ideas about what should be worn to prom.
Prom is waaayy over rated.
I don't like it. Not my favorite shade of blue and the color blocking reminds me of street lights-sort of like Kara Janx's caution-tape inspired dress. The girl did look pretty cute and confident though.
I'm with Kathryn. The dress was just alright for me, and when I look at it all I can see is a TV pixel.

I don't know if you are just trying to be cute and spell them wrong or whatever. But those German words are not spelled correctly. It's almost like you spelled them phonetically. For example
vermischt is mingles, intermixed or intermingled. The "v" in German is pronounced like and "f"
Verstehen is understanding, again the "v" sounds like "f".
All the others are wrong too. FYI.
Love you, but WTF? What is "edgy" about this dress other than the use of black in spots?
It's a garden party dress for a wannabe-Goth girl. Well made, sure. Not to be auff'ed over. But not a winner.
(And I think more highly of it than Jay McCarroll, who totally hated it, and, oddly, agreed with Vayaya's win!)
I second that emotion; that the judges are fercockt (the actual spelling).
NO, its actually "vercockt"
"I don't know if you are just trying to be cute and spell them wrong or whatever. But those German words are not spelled correctly. It's almost like you spelled them phonetically. For example

Oy vey. Mashugenah.
Disagreeance here as well. I've worked in schools for the past few years and the prom dresses I've seen have been way more formal than this.
Also the bodice looks askew and it's completely messing up the whole thing. It just screams home-sewn or Forever 21 with the bad finishing.
Sorry. I usually agree with you, but this time, I think you had a few too many. This mom of 2 teenage girls thinks Kit's dress was truly UGLY. Color, style..
she took a girl who looked adorable in her Catholic school garb and made her look tacky.
I liked Kit's dress. My top three in order were Chris, Kit then Sweet P. I did notice that the top was a little wonky but couldn't figure out why in the 2 seconds they showed it. I've liked a lot of Kit's stuff and she is another person who can't seem to buy a win.
To me, a prom dress is whatever a girl wants to wear to her prom. Different strokes, etc. More of the high school girls I know would rather wear this one than Victorya's because it is more body conscious.
"But those German words are not spelled correctly. It's almost like you spelled them phonetically."
It's Yiddish, transliterated into English, as per the Yiddish/English dictionary, (and yes, either 'f' or 'v' are acceptable, though the 'f' makes them easier to pronounce). The dictionary does spell them phonetically, as the original words are in the hebraic alphabet.
--GothamTomato
It's just not very pretty. Nor was V-ya's. Chris and Sweet P's may have been less modern but they made the girls wearing them look so pretty. I think that's what girls want on prom night, to feel beautiful.
Well then they have just taken German words and misspelled them.
This dress was hideous. I can't get over that boob panel. What is that?
Admit it - you guys just like the gay pride flag on her boobs!
I think it's just a matter of taste with this one - I actually like the design and construction, I'd like it more with different colors. These are a little too primary, they remind me of Lego blocks. What mattered is that the girl liked it (although the thing will probably be auctioned off and she'll never wear it, right?).
I'm glad you showed the back, it's really cute. We didn't get much chance to look at it. I wish the judges would say at least a little something about the safe garments so we could get a better look at them.
I felt like I didn't get enough of a look at this dress. The cameras were so fixated on Christian's tanty, that people like Kit get the short shrift.
I thought it was an unusual dress --but totally contemporary and Kit. Yes, I could see someone wearing this to a prom, though really, around here --it'd be a micro-mini!
Good job Kit!
I had my senior prom last year, so all the memories are still fresh in my mind. I honestly cannot recall seeing a short dress on any girl, but I'm sure there were some - there always are. But the thing with both Kit's and Victorya's dresses, they just didn't seem PROM to me. Chris and Sweet P's did.
Although Kit's dress was much prettier than V's, by a looooong shot. :P

kit: ok, i disliked chicken’s dress but this dress made me physically ill. i just think this dress is so ugg. what is with these suspenders and this foul ass combination of colors? this is seriously my least favorite garment of the entire season. it moves me in such a negative way. i cant even…ugh!! i just can’t believe the memory of this dress is now burnt into my brain forever. i have to go wash out my eye.
I love Jay!
HA! Well said Jay. And so true. This dress is awful.
Oh Snap!! Someone done spiked the Kool-Ade today, Grrl!
You go, DanielDC! Let tha fur fly!
Clutching my pearls in horror.
I can't get past the wide straps. I think strapless would have worked much better. Not a big fan of the color either. just a bit too harsh.
She should have made this dress for the "overalls trend" episode. All I can think of when I look at this dress are Jillians' overalls, or those clown suspenders that she (Jillian) wore on the Hersheys episode. I was surprised that it didn't get called out as one of the bottom 3.
One of my favorite moments EVER from all seasons of PR:
Jay whining straight to the camera like a petulant 4-year old:
"I hate Wendy Pepper so much!"
God I loved him.
I'm not a huge fan of this dress. It's a very loud electric blue. The color panels are cute, but it just adds more noise to an already very loud dress.
One thing I'll say for Kit, though. She's never boring.
i frankly don't see where her hem is much better looking than kevin's...

And let me see if I understand that correctly, you love him because you both share the same opinion about this dress? How prom and high school of you.

where oh where can i find jay's blog? i didn't even know he had one.
I love Jay for lots of reasons. And I happen to agree with him. I love the Gayboys and I disagree with them this time. I don't understand your problem.
I love Jay because he says EXACTLY what he feels and doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks.
You're done.
Girls, girls, girls! You're ALL pretty!
It's OKAY if some people hated it and some people loved it. What does Tim (who *ahem* loved this dress) always say? "Chacun a son gout." To each his own, darlings! That's what makes it fun; right?
the dress would have been cuter strapless. I think it would have stepped it up a bit in the dressy-ness, which everyone seems to be having a problem with.
Well I HATE it and I AM the prettiest.
I just thought it was fun that Jay & TLo disagreed and I brought it to everyone's attention. I never miss a chance to express my love for Jay. Apparently, there are some strange things being read into that, but I'm not fighting with anyone.
Mwa to all! Have a nice weekend!
btw, anon, there's a link to Jay's blog on the right side of PRGay, just scroll around, you'll find it.
Any chance we can get Uncle Nick to weigh in on this? He has a prom line doesn't he?
Mwa?
I'm sorry to say I hated this dress. I like Kit and loved the idea when she was describing the concept to the teen, but the dress turned out looking rigid and stiff. The bodice looked way too tight.
Anonymous said...

You can read it here.
T&L
Mwa = "Kisses"; excl. slang, the sound one makes when they "throw kisses"
(var.: Muah)
From the English/Yiddish dictionary, 10th ed., 2004
(never leave home without it)
I for sure thought that she and Chris were going to be in the top three with Sweet P (although I kind of guessed from the beginning of the runway show that VictorYA was going to win). Regardless, Kit's dress is BEAUTIULLY made. The color is kinda of bizarre, but the sheer fabric in the back made up for it.
Oh, and check out Ricky's dress; he completely ripped off the whole "sheer overlay" concept of Kit's dress. You can tell because he CLEARLY had no idea how to do it, and it looked like shit. When will they send Ricky home??
Fashion Manifesto, thank you for that explaination. Never heard that term. That's a new one for me. one that I won't be using.
Really? How did you guess her winning? I watched the show and thought that would be in the bottom 3 for sure? What tipped you off? The edit?
I'll read the peanut gallery's comments later, but I just wanted to say LOOOOOOVED it.
It's not for everyone, or even me, since I'm a barely-B cup, but it was young, creative and fun. IOW, perfect for her CLIENT and if YICKtorYUCK's dress was formal enough for a prom today, then so is Kit's.
What IS she going to have to do to garner praise (or any attention whatsover) from the judges? Sheesh.....
She won this week at the PiMP house, with Sweet P and Sissybear a close second/third.
Chris' dress was my favorite, but after seeing the pics of Kit's dress (which look better here than on my TV), I've changed my mind. Kit's styling on this project was fabulous!
Now, on to read all the other comments.....
I thought this was a pretty dress in a pretty color and relatively flattering to the girl who wore it, but it reminded me more of a dress for high tea or a bridesmaid's luncheon than a prom dress. It lacked both the formality and the glamour necessary to say "promenade".
And I still think Chris was robbed.
Okay, finished reading the 150+ posts....
Prom fashions are definitely different from my time (Jessica McClintock Little House on the Prarie hoedown gatherings).
I chaperoned the last two years at my son's proms & winter formals and saw all kinds of fashions on the young ladies. Everything from runway glam, cocktail lengths, and a few goth styles (which were the most fun to see!). The whole point was to put on their own fashion show and have the time of their lives. It would have been boring to see nothing but what's perceived as proper prom fashions. We had such a wonderful time seeing the transformations on the youngsters!
Of the four formals my son went to, only one of the girls wore a glam runway dress (with the long opera gloves even); the others chose cocktail lengths. They all were gorgeous.
To my mortification, my son ditched the rented tux shoes and wore his Vans.....every time. His idea of a fashion statement......my ass.
So happy to see this! When we were watching, I told Mr. Anonymous that this was my favorite. Kit was robbed!
Holy crap. WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THE PR GAY BOYS??? I mean seriously... Kit's dress wasn't the worst out there but that bodice was pretty whickety whacked.
Chris and Kit's were awesome, and Sweet P and Jillian's were also beautiful!!
I think Ricky and Christian are two lucky guys... I would have sent Ricky home, but I would have sent Christian home before Kevin. I'm so sad
The color bars on the top of Kit's dress ruined it for me - all I could think of was the group challenge to revive old fashions, and the collective hot mess of vYa, ricky and elisa's "collection."
But I don't hate it, and I think I see your point.
I wonder, though - did any of the other girls ask for Fashion Forward? I mean, if meeting the client's needs is a high priority, then shouldn't fashion-forwardness take a second chair to that???
Jay McCarroll's blog is up and he wants this one for the auf.
It's just fashion...
The top three for me was Kit, Chris and Sweet P.
KIT WAS ROBBED I TELL YOU! =)
I laughed my ass off to watch Christian basically have a client that was well - himself!
But he definitely didn't know to handle it which baffled me somewhat considering he has SO MUCH attitude! I was so waiting for the smack down but it never came.....
I thought for sure he would go home until I reminded myself that he was a bit of a teacher's pet so it was unlikely. And lo and behold.....Kevin sent packing.

Kinda like being on the cover of Sports Illustrated?
Eh, I thought this one was a middle of the pack dress but if you follow the logic of Victorya's fug concoction being the winner I guess you could say this was a top 3 effort. I would have put Chris 1, Sweet P 2, Jillian 3, Kit 4. But what do I know? My last prom was in 1983 so you can just imagine the 80s get-ups we wore!
I can't agree with you guys on this one. I think it's a decent enough party dress, but the front of the bodice, with the straps, looks too sporty/casual to me for a prom dress. And the panels look almost like plastic.
I'm sorry.. but this dress was NOT a favorite for me. I thought the styling was hideous and and awkward.. I would never wear that to a prom or any type of formal situation. It wasn't edgy, it was just colors that clashed with each other that annoyed the shit out of me.
"GothamTomato said...

Retarded.
Here's what Tim said about the dress:
"Kit took risks, which I always applaud. In this case, the risk was in her choice of textiles -- an unconventional blue for the main body of the dress and three panels of color for the bust-line. I looked at the fabric on her worktable and asked myself, “How is this going to work?” I was concerned that her dress would look like a school craft project. But work it did! Her client, Brie, looked ravishing."
Why doesn't KB run and tell Jay that Tim is trying to convince everyone to like this dress?
Pathetic!! Have your opinion, but let other people have their own opinions as well.

ROFL.
Just wanted to add, after reading all the comments, that I have been reading blogs and clicking interview links ever since the tragedy of Tuesday night, and in one insider interview, it says that none of the girls really liked their dresses, but they did like their designers, with the exception of Chris/Maddie, and so stuck up for them on the runway.
Oh and to anonymous who "loves it that Kit is quietly passing through to each round, no major complaints from The Three"? Please realize that this is NOT a good sign...
~ah guys...love you like a sister, but I disagree with you on this one.
I bought a middle-school winter dance dress for my 11 year old last month. While shopping, I now recall there were a number of dresses very similar to this one (sans the open back of course) at places like Limited Two and Dillard's. If standard retailers are putting out this look for 6th graders one can conclude that "it ain't edgy." Trendy, young girl-ish, yes.
Again, love you madly...but this dress took a tan, toned young woman and turned her into an extremely average looking hostess at a popular bar/restaurant. That said, I think Kit benefited from having model with a lovely, womanly body.
She could have put her in one of those ghastly eggplant-shaped bubble skirts and she still would have looked good...keep the same color and glue on some craptacular plasti-jewelettes and she would have WON. (eh?...hmmm, yes indeed)
I didn't hate it more than Rami's (yes, he's HOT, but still) Spinach-colored flapper dress... wtf did he do to that poor child's hair? It looks like a pair of brown nylon stockings rolled up and hot-glued to the side of her head. It's the PROM dammit! Talk about Lost in Translation.
I digress. Anyway, I don't loathe your favorite pick, and certainly don't think you're as deluded as Nina (gah), but I'm sending you a raised eyebrow... ~ ...and a warm hug.

Sorry- I couldn't like Kits dress. I tried.
I didn't like this dress the moment I saw it come down the runway. I'm confused as to what the Rungay boys see in it. When I saw Victorya's design on her "model", I knew right away it would be a top contender. It really is, as Nina said, a modern take on a prom dress.
Rungay boys-
Love you guys but I think you missed the boat on this one. Yes, the silhouette is nice. Yes, the back is pretty. But the fit is odd, the execution is poor, and with that color band across the chest, the only thing you can look at are the kid's tits. Seriously, this dress showed questionable taste on Kit's part. It just wasn't nice to look at.
DanielDC - I was totally joking! I'm sorry, I should have put a little ;-) in there or something.
I thought this one was ugly. Sorry.
I like Kit with her natural hair color. The platium blonde is too harsh for her.
Naturally you are correct!!
Kit's dress should have least been in contention!!
I don't think it is very pretty. I think the girl is pretty and the dress just misses, the bust looks awkward, the straps are not pretty, they do seem to have a job to do. It's a nice dress for an evening out with friends dancing, I do not think it is a prom dress.
I also think she looks really pretty in her prom picture, a two piece outfit, black top, grey skirt, not too foofy.
I am not so sure about this one babies...
Although original and interesting, I had issue with the straps and their placement and the colours.
It reminded me of a bright, happy beach ball.
And on your prom, that is the last think you want to make people think of.
I really wanted to love it though.
Big hugs,
Milla
GOD NO! This dress wasn't a total loser, but the top looks like a swim suit.
It WAS Chris and Sweet P who were robbed. That glued-on, plastic gem mess by Victor Ya was a shitacious nightmare all around.
And Ricky's tear-stained towel-wrap was absolutely the WORST!!!!
I really disagree... I thought the halter straps really cheapened the dress and made it incredibly unflattering... i would have much preferred the same look done strapless... it would have been much more slimming on the girl...
Although I liked Chris's and Sweet P's dresses, I thought Kit's was amazing. I've been to prom very recently (just this previous May), and PLENTY of girls wore shorter dresses, myself included. The ones that were too long/big/princess poofy looked almost too formal for prom. And I was surprised that people thought this was a lunch/going out dress, since I know very few teens who get this dressed up to go out... ever! Ha ha. But maybe my friends are just unfashionable.
Wow, Jay really, really hates this one. I still like it the best. Most of the fit problem is the model's posture.
I felt exactly the same way about this dress, it was my favorite. I was completely disappointed when it just passed unnoticed, not even in the top 3 (or 2 on this episode). Proms may be an opportunity to be glamorous and grown up, but when it comes to the time to give it all on the dance floor, have a good time and look chic and fabulous, this dress is perfect. It is so young, chic and hip. Loved the bold colors and styling. I remember my prom dess, it was in that same color and it was "flowly" like this one, only long length, it was made by a local designer who is well known here, and I followed her advice to not go too puffy or too tight or too short because it was about looking chic, having fun and being comfortable. Most of the other girls were in pastel colors and princess dresses, but they couln't barely move or were too exhausted carrying all that fabric.
CONGRATULATIONS KIT!!!!
I loved this dress and so did my 17 year daughter.
