Congratulations Kit!

We don't give a shit WHAT those fakakta judges said. WE think your design was the clear winner this week.
Surprised, readers? Based on the comments to the previous posts, nearly everybody seems to think that either Sweet P or Chris got robbed out of the win and many assumed that we thought so too. Fear not. We have nice things to say about their dresses, but this dress just blew us away.
First, she gave her client, who said she chose Kit because she wanted something with an edge to it, exactly what she wanted. So few of the designers did that this week that we have to pay her the compliment.
Second, once again, the styling is superb. She took a real girl - who is naturally pretty, it needs to be said - and made her look like a model.
Just a note about the previous sentence before anyone gets their panties all twisted. When we say "real girl" or "real woman" we mean just that. We don't mean "fat girl" or "ugly woman." Models are genetic freaks and if you ever see one in person, you know what we mean. What we mean is, they're almost always outrageously tall and thin and tend to have highly unusual bone structure that photographs or lights well. They're also trained to know how to wear clothing in the best, most dramatic way and show it off to its best advantage. That's why they're models. And that's why Tim and the judges and the designers draw that distinction whenever it comes up.
We were utterly flabbergasted when they shuffled her off the runway without a word about her dress. She took real risks in every area - the color, the execution, the style - and those risks paid off.
It's just such a uniquely beautiful and striking dress. Plus, it's young and colorful and flirty. It's not that it couldn't be worn by an older woman but it looks to us like it's perfectly suited for a younger one. It has that slightly edgy quality that young women can get away with easier, yet it's coupled with a classic silhouette which gives it a more refined, and yes, expensive look to it.
Here are some minor criticisms: the bust is beautifully executed except it looks slightly off-center (although that could be a posture issue and not a fit one) and the straps are attached to the waist somewhat inelegantly.
Also, it could be argued that this doesn't look formal enough for a prom.
On the latter point, we don't entirely agree. As we said earlier, prom styles come and go and not every girl wants the floor length gown, nor does every girl look good in one. This is a great style for a girl who's got some curves and wants to show off her legs.
And the back is just as lovely as the front.
We said earlier that Kit was too much the eternal bridesmaid (and we're a little afraid to reiterate that point because look what happened when we said the same about Kevin) but even if this dress wasn't good enough for a win, for the judges to ignore it completely not only doesn't make sense to us, it feels like a real slap in the face to Kit.
This dress was stylish, up-to-the-minute fashionable, colorful, youthful and had a slight edge to it. Which is ironic...
...because little Miss Preppy McPrepperson couldn't have been more middle-of-the road if she tried. Kudos on your date, girl! Did he turn out to be gay?

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 218 of 218 Newer› Newest»Usually, I am right there with you guys. Although I love Kit, I did not love her prom dress. I thought it read "Jillian's overalls".
I thought Sweet Pea and Chris were robbed.
Ugh I usually agree with almost all your observations( you're witty to say the least :) and obviously both quite intelligent with a high taste level - I run to the computer after episodes to read ), but I personally didn't care for this dress and defnitely not for the win. The striped panel looks like drapes and ugly drapes at that-- pier 1 and on sale. The whole effect especially in pics resembles suspenders with a skirt- And the electric blue certainly didn't help matters. I hate the rainbow brite panel effect--Having said that it is 'different' ( don't think I'd call it edgy though), it is nice to see color just not in this combination- I think the styling of the hair is wrong, and that would have helped some. I guess it is what the client wanted though, so for that Kit ( who is sweet and is def a contender for top 3) executed it well and met her goals. It just didn't work for me.
Okay, as a third-generation Austrian Jew, I feel that I have to weigh in on the whole "fercockt", etc. discussion. For those of you who don't know, Yiddish is not German. Although the two languages sound somewhat similar when spoken, Yiddish is written in the Hebrew alphabet, which uses different characters than the Latin-based alphabet used in the English (and German, btw) languages. If Yiddish words were spelled “correctly” (i.e., using Hebrew characters) people unfamiliar with that system of writing wouldn’t know how to pronounce them. So they are written phonetically. That's basically what "transliteration" means. The point is to get as close to the original sound of the word as possible, while using an alphabet substantially different from the original. Also, because there are different Yiddish dialects, as well as different ways of conveying the same sounds in our alphabet, you will sometimes see variations in the spelling of transliterated words. These variations aren't considered errors.
Sorry for the lecture -- I know that Gotham Tomato already said most of this, making my little treatise here fairly unnecessary. But my grandmother ranting about all of you in my head right now. In Yiddish. All right, Bubbie, I told them! See what a good granddaughter I am?
Wait, the dress? Oh, yeah. It was all right.
Oh, and also? Unless my eyes deceived me, one of the commenters made a disparaging remark about the original Star Trek. Blasphemy! For shame!

"It's a garden party dress for a wannabe-Goth girl."
... whuh? WHUH?
My Goth girl credentials are extensive and therefore surely laughable so we won't just go there. Instead I'll simply say that while we're all using Google Images searches to justify our worldviews, at least one reader really needs to look up "Goth."
This dress is about as Goth as Rainbow Brite.
And to snooty-snoot who said that everyone who loved Chris' and Sweet Pea's dresses just proves how provincial America is in regards to fashion: no, sugar, it just proves how provincial prom is. It's a pretty unique aesthetic, and I think very few Americans would think of it as being in any way a fashion-forward institution. But you just go on with your clearly-superior self.
Especially watching on TV, the color bars reminded me more of a Video Color Bars / TV holding pattern. So she presents on her breast plate, a "program on hold, about to begin, to be turned on". And of course, at their age, the breasts on either side of that, will be the "tuners".
The dress is hideous.
Not edgy. Maybe awkward.
You know, I do like Kit's blue dress, but the girl DOES look like she's on her way to the bowling alley weaing it.
this dress looked like a bad show choir dress...from the color, to the fit to the bodice, there was nothing I liked about this dress
most of the time I completely agree with what you boys say but this was a total miss.
from the odd not-quite navy fabric to the weird combination of colors in the bodice and the crazy straps...nothing about this dress was working for me.
I agree that the styling was on point (as always for Kit) and the girl looked really great...but the only part of the dress that seemed to work was the Jay-esque layering of colors on the back of the bodice.
Hmmm... I wonder if Kit Pistol would have won had she bedazzled her striped feature panel? The judges seemed to adore that crap on Yaya's monstrosity...
YES, thank you!!!! I was so sad when Kit got nary a mention :-(
Good, I knew it wasn't just me that thought she was COMPLETELY robbed.
I'm not sold on those colors. They read like "Lifesavers" or "80's" to me.
Nice dress. Too bad it's a party dress and not a Prom dress
Love the color, and the fact that it's vibrant, but don't like the blocks of color on the bust. The eye is drawn to her chest, which is a good thing if you're 17 and perky!, but those panels make her look like she's sporting a sandwich sign (or a censor's box). All these hard rectangles superimposed on soft curves. Maybe that's the juxtaposition she was going for?
I don't hate it, just wouldn't have picked it for the win.
Sorry, but you and the judges were totally out to lunch on this one. You're all hung up on these being young girls, never mind that professional models are this age, and that they should be wearing something as dull and demure as this dress. Kids are mighty sophisticated these days and as other posts showed, none of the models liked their dresses much, but wanted to be nice to their designers. What I've seen around NYC for fancy dress teens is VERY chic designer wear - what 16 year old is not going to use a prom for as their red carpet moment? And so Victorya's rather questionable dress came closest to being sort of hip. Honestly, I don't like these babydoll sack dresses, but moneyed kids were wearing them, at least last year!
I'm having a problem with the bust that I had trouble putting my finger on for a while, but I think it's this: I'd love it if the straps were in the seam above the waist instead of the seam below it. It just seems to frame her in an awkward way at an awkward place.
Other than that, it's fabulous.
Although I'm confused; I thought Kit was my age, but the fashions in the prom pic look at least a decade older...
