Tim Gunn Just Can't Keep His Big Gay Mouth Shut

...and that's why we love him.

TVSquad has a report from Tim's appearance at the Baltimore Book Festival and apparently, the audience got quite an earful:

"As for the new stuff, Gunn assured the audience that the fourth cycle will be the best season yet. But then he added, "If I'm correct, I think you're going to get angry every time you see the show. You're going to get angry at the judges because... I don't know what they were smoking this season." He shared the story of one upcoming challenge without divulging too much detail: "There was one case in particular where I said to the producers [...] 'It's really too bad that so-and-so's design is so terrible, because the audience will know right away. The minute they see this, they're going to know that he's going home. And I'm just sorry that something else isn't almost as bad, almost as challenged. Everything else looks really good!... He wins the challenge. He wins! It's inconceivable. So I went backstage to tell the designer who was out that he or she had to go home, and I turned to him and I said, 'And you know, I'm stunned and shocked that you won this challenge' and he said, 'Well, no one's more surprised than I am.'"

Yow!

Well, it seems as if the judges are going to reward originality and vision this season.

At least Tim is careful to separate his perspective from that of the judges--it's obvious that Tim has much more taste than the latter. I still can't believe how far Vincent got last season--Tim could clearly see his designs were atrocious, but the judges were oblivious. At least there's one voice of sanity on the show!

That's fucking great! I can't wait!

I don't understand those judges. The producers should find new judges for the show.

One word: VINCENT!

Anonymous said...

I'm mad already and LOVING it.

Anonymous said...

The judges are inconsistent and frankly this becomes silly all too often.

Anonymous said...

I think that the producers of Project Runway have quite an influence over who gets auf'd.

They should have kicked Vincent off after the first challenge, when he put that basket on that girl's head and called it a hat. Anyone with an aesthetic that poor shouldn't even be allowed on the show.

Tim is usually very careful in publicizing his criticism of the judge's decisions, but apparently all bets are off. This tidbit already has me scared/excited for next season - if we have another case of talentless hacks finding more longevity on the show than actual designers, i don't know what I'll do.

I think this group is very talented and will produce great stuff. The problem is deciding who wins and who goes home and let's face it the judges have made stupid decisions in the past.

Since this is reality TV, the more drama the merrier! Just my opinion! ;-)

Did they cast Santino again?

Tim sure knows how to whip PR fans into a frenzy, doesn't he? I can't wait for the podcast!

Bravo really got a goldmine with our Mr. Gunn.

Maybe we need new judges, because it's obvious their fashion sense has nothing to do with what real women would want to wear.

Anonymous said...

Judges' favorites: Christian, Rami, Kevin. My bet.

Anonymous said...

Did anybody notice the blue/white gingham dress in the background? I wonder which challenge that is from and who made it. Is that the garment he is talking about???

Anonymous said...

The judges love the young, hip, driven, and crazy. They also pick their favorites and they can do no wrong.
Michael Kors: Daniel Vosovic
Nina Garcia: Chloe

My favorite part is reading the blogs in which angry viewers claim they will no longer watch the show when their favorite designer is eliminated or when the designer they hate stays on. I wonder how many of these people actually follow through on their claim?

Anonymous said...

I genuflect in the Divine Miss Tim's direction. :-)

Anonymous said...

I love Tim Gunn. That is all.

Anonymous said...

I don't know what they were smoking last season either. Nina would put Bradley's dog dress in Vogue? I'll tell you where you can put it, Nina e_e

And then Allison gets eliminated for a dress that Tim thought would win.

And the whole time, there seem to be basically no disagreements among the judges, as if judging a garment is a simple, objective process.

Really, how many times can you remember the judges disagreeing on something? Um... Nina liked Kara's jean dress for the Barbie challenge and Heidi didn't? Michael thought Santino's flower dress was too shiny and Heidi didn't mind? And... that's all I can think of.

I love the fashion, hate the drama. I have a feeling I'm not going to be a happy camper this season.

What would PR be without mind boggling decisions from the judges for all of us to bitch about?

I am intrigued. Macasism is right, those podcasts should be something else indeed. I love that Tim just lets it rip!

Can you imagine Tim as one of the judges? That would be quite interesting.

How do you know they're 'very talented'? We haven't even seen one episode yet.

Most of them had a successful career before the show. I've seen some of their collections and IMHO they are very talented. It's just a matter of whether they pleased or not the judges.

I think some of the difference is that Tim gets to see what goes on behind the scenes, while the judges don't. So he knows if someone has cut corners or thrown something together with no thought, or if someone else recovered quickly and gracefully from unexpected disaster.

Consider, too, that the judges only see what's apparent from the runway. They can't see from their seats how badly sewn a seam may be*, or other fine details. But Tim knows.

Of course, he also has far better taste than the judges (some of whom seem to have no taste at all)!

*Unless it's falling apart in front of them like that godawful jumpsuit Santino did for Kara!

It would! But I prefer him where he is, where he can advise and mentor. If he were a judge, he couldn't do that. He could only say, "Oh?" and raise an eyebrow, like Tom Colicchio.

I felt this way too when I first saw the show, but after reading a couple of Vogues I could totally see Bradley's dress in that magazine.

I wonder who did the blue dress in the background.

Copy that, Rogue Leader. I watch DESPITE the hysteria and manufactured drama. I like watching the designers work through the process of "WTF?! Use recycled materials???" and come to an interesting end.

What *are* the judges smoking? Maybe they need to institute random drug testing. Or check up on the dealers, because they're getting some really bad stuff. Again.

Anonymous said...

well thank God people like my beloved Malan prove that even if you get auf'd early on, you can still have a very nice career, thankyouverymuch. So i'm prepared to be aghast at some of the judging (and the fashions) and love every minute of it!

Eh, me thinks it would be too much like Tom on Top Chef. It seems like he doesn't get attached to the chefs and basically only says what they're doing wrong to the camera in the kitchen, while Tim is there for moral support and encouragement. I like Top Chef, but I think it lacks the heart that Tim provides.

No, it definitely can't be Santino, b/c he always thought he should win every challenge. :)

I'm half sick to my stomach, half giddy--bring on the drama-rama!

There's no accountin' fer taste!

1-- The edit should show more of the judging process. Think I read some decisions took hours and the judges argued. Have a little clock tickin' away in the corner of the frame!

2 -- Dear God, please let there be good guest judges this season.

Amen.

PS -- Have we heard one good explanation for how Creepy Hack Vincent survived so long? Grrrrr.

I'm angry all over again!

Yay!

Well, d'wind, I'll take a crack at it. I was frequently surprised at how different Vincent was on the runway, especially in the earlier episodes, compared to his behavior behind the scenes. If you only look at how he presents his work, he may be a bit annoying but he's not insane. We saw all the behind-the-scenes craziness, but the judges didn't.

Actually, I recall reading an interview with MK that said something like this--the judges had no idea he was nuts until the episodes started airing.

Frankly, I think many people's response to Vincent is based more on his personality than his designs. Tim's certainly was. His dislike of Vincent (IMO) was over-the-top--he was not objective at all when it came to Vincent.

That's what Stacy and Clinton say, anyone over 30!

Plus, so does Tim on the other show.

And this is why I said "many people" not all. IMO, almost all of Vincent's designs were too boring to be truly horrid.

Anonymous said...

Tim, my dear, keep talking, tell us EVERYTHING.

Anonymous said...

Oh, come on! -- Vincent's designs were beyond horrid.

His taste level just isn't there.

-- desertwind

Anonymous said...

Vincent's personality delusions about himself were horrible and his designs were worse. Most of his designs were either flat out hideous or incredibly plain. All of them had some detail that was ugly at the very least.

It infuriated me to see good designers leave while the judges ignored Vincent's horrible clothes and even rewarded him for them!

Normally I would never get so bothered about something like this but Vincent and the judges drove me insane that season.

So much truth spoken here as always!

Tim gunn = Bravo gold (true true true)

Tim Gunn tells all = Podcast heaven

I have a technical question. The way that Tim relays the story indicates that he apparently went backstage to tell one of the designers that they were auf'd, while at the same time relaying the news to the winner that they had won.

Do I read that wrong? Since when do the designers find out this information anywhere except on the stage?

hey, lima bean! :) if you re-read what tim said, i think you'll see that the designer already knew he had won. tim was just informing him of his disbelief, with the designer sharing his own surprise:

"So I went backstage to tell the designer who was out that he or she had to go home, and I turned to him and I said, 'And you know, I'm stunned and shocked that you won this challenge' and he said, 'Well, no one's more surprised than I am.'"

Ewww... this sounds like Santino all over again. Some loser is going to win for the sake of drama.

Anonymous said...

The idiotic judging:

Jay over Kara? Jay is a homeless loser famwhore. Kara runs a successful business.

Vincent and Angela over Malan Bretan? Now Malan is one of the most successful alumni from Season 3.

Santino over Emmett and Kara Janx? Santino is juts another reality TV F-list famewhore. Both Emmett and Kara have successful businesses.

The only time they got it right was Chloe. She is the most successful winner this show has produced.

Proof is in the pudding, bitches. The judging sucks.

Anonymous said...

SO... with only 7 designers left, did we ever see what Tim was referring to in his comments? I can only think of a few male winners, and I don't recall any of them having what seemed obviously the worst dress. Was Tim playing with the personal pronouns and referring to VictorYA's tacky little prom dress? I'm not sure it was the worst, most obvious loser that week, anyway.

I hope this means we will be seeing this moment in the next week or two!
