Snoopy in Fashion Spring 2008 Collection

Monday, September 10, 2007 by
As you might remember, Laura showed her creations at the MetLife Snoopy in Fashion show on Friday in Bryant Park and sure, we may be just a tad biased, but try and tell us that hers weren't the best pieces in the show.

CAMILLA! Girl, we missed you! LOVE the dress; not so much on the hat.

And we just want to do a little shoutout to all those fools who claim that Laura designs dreary old lady clothes. Two words, bitches: BULL and SHIT. That is fun and flirty and girly and YOUNG.

Frederique Van Der Waal (with her daughter Skyler) modeled the Pigpen dress. Gorge.

As for the rest of the pieces (designed by, among others, Betsey Johnson, Isaac Mizrahi, Heatherette, and (ew) Elizabeth Hasselbeck), they were either too literal (did none of these designers think for a moment "Yeah, I probably shouldn't do that zig-zag stripe because everyone'll be doing it?") or obscure to the point that there's no way of knowing which character they're supposed to be portraying.

Who? Who are these outfits supposed to represent?

Okay, cute and thematically appropriate, but were there more than ten minutes of thought put into either of these looks?

We don't know what the hell the guy on the left is supposed to be (but thanks for the legs!). On the right? Yawn.

WHAT.
THE.
HELL?

Enh.

Double enh.

Triple.

Some of these models wandered in from a different show, right?

You gave her a blankie and put her in a black dress and she's supposed to be Linus? How...clever.

We love the one on the left, which looks exactly like something a Peanuts girl would wear. The right - who knows?

All of the designs will be auctioned on eBay in October to raise money for Dress for Success, so save your pennies, gals. You could have a Laura Bennett original AND help out a worthy cause.

You can watch the entire show (or highlights) here.

Wow. Do big name fashion designers not know peanuts characters or just not care?

Was every guy in there the red baron?

I mean COME ON I'm not even a fashion designer but when you get the chance to do something outragoues like that with such awesome inspiration the ideas should be flooding in.

How about a cat next door dress (complete with fierce persona)? Frieda, The girl with naturaly curly hair? The great pumpkin? Rerun? THE LITTLE RED HAIRED GIRL????

I agree, most of the designs were boring or looked like something they pulled out of their closet at the last minute. Laura's designs were fabulous!

Laura's designs definitely stand out from the pack. I love the Woodstock dress and would wear it, too. Even though I would probably look more like Edith Massey than Josephine Baker.
I would like to see a photo of the Pigpen dress with the model in a more flattering pose. I think in her original sketch the organza jacket had long, long, sleeves that were gathered and bunched to look like "dust" clouds. It is a beautiful dress anyway.
The more famous designers donations look like they were handed off to an intern (to design). I guess they are banking on their famous names to get the big bids. It will be interesting to see which designs fetch the highest prices on the Ebay auction.

What's this I hear about a Laura Bennett line at QVC? OK! Magazine apparently said something about it but I can't find an article anywhere. Anyone?

Yes definitely Laura's were the best of the bunch. Her Woodstock dress? Fab, fab, FAB! I wish she had been able to do the full length tulle coat that was in her sketch though, I think that would have been da bomb!

She still rules, regardless!

Suzanne said...

Love the Woodstock dress but I like the Pigpen tulle jacket thingy better in the sketch....oh well it was definitely the best thing in the show.

Maybe the unknown dress was the teacher....remeber" "WAH WAH WAAAAAAAAAH WAAAAAAAAAH"

I thought maybe it was Laura-Love Hyperbole with the glowing reviews here and BPR, but then I saw the pix of the other designs here, and oh my. I don't think the Laura-Love could be glowing enough, especially in comparison to the hideousness that was paraded out by the other designers. Did anyone other than Laura take this seriously? It really doesn't look as if they did. I hope Laura's creativity and commitment to this challenge are duly rewarded!

I was thinking Marcy for the model in the red striped dress?

Also, Red Baron for the guys....

BigAssBelle said...

ooh, that yellow dress.

pigpen outfit? not so much.

damn, reminds me of when i got into my mother's supply of petticoat netting in 1963.

but the yellow one. yes.

Anonymous said...

I think the unknown guy is supposed to be Snoopy as the WWI flying ace ... to go with the other aviation guy who is more recognizable as the Red Baron.

For the life of me, though, I can't figure out the girl in the black dress. Is it Lucy at a cocktail funeral?

kath said...

LOVED the Woodstock dress. Liked the pigpen dress also (didn't love it though). At least with Laura's designs, you knew exactly who she was channeling without being too literal. The poofy tulle was perfect for Pigpen. Some of the designs were scary. Did you see Heatherette's wedding dress? Yikes!

Anonymous said...

I think the red striped dress could be someone's take on Peppermint Patty.

Laura's yellow dress is GORGEOUS! And Camilla!...I LOVE her!!
Some of those designs are hideous. Laura definitely had the best designs.

The Woodstock dress is fabulous. I love Laura!

Camilla is a fantastic model. She really worked that dress. I'm sorry, but Frederique killed the Pigpen dress.

Laura can do no wrong in my book. Gorgeous dresses!!

Love, love, LOVE Laura's Woodstock dress, and I disagree about the hat: I think the hat really makes it complete. Very Cabaret.

(And btw, I love the 'ew' before the mention of Hasselbeck - whom I LOATHE, and wtf was she doing there anyway?)

Anonymous said...

Sorry...I meant PRS3 winner.

Oh my God, I died and went to gay heaven: CAMILLA + LAURA BENNETT

Anonymous said...

Laura's were clearly the most interesting and the most recognizable without sporting an actual reproduction of the characters, but I have to admit that the Snoopy coat amused me. :-)

As for the model in blue with the sunglasses, is she supposed to be dressed as Linus' blanket?

Anonymous said...

Charles Shultz is turning over in his grave.

The only things recognizable as characters were the darling woodstock dress and the various versions of Charlie Brown. I didn't see anything resembling the rest of the crew..including snoopy.

Seems like this was yet another platform for these designers to shake out the kinks in their uninspired and (to use a Micheal Kor's phrase) "underwhelming" bits of design.

I completely agree with the first anon post...this was a chance to do something outrageous with inspiration and it fell as flat on its back as Charlie Brown does when kicking the football...without the wonderful UGH!

Anonymous said...

Laura, as usual, sends fabulosity down the runway. I also love that peanut-color dress with the blue belt. Fabulous design, no?

Anonymous said...

I'm a huge fan of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang so imagine my excitement when I read about the Snoopy show. That's such a great idea. Laura did a fantastic job. They're both beautiful creations, but the Woodstock dress is clearly the winner. They should do something like that on Project Runway.

The thing is that if you're going to send only two dresses down the runway of course you're going to send your signature looks. I'm sure if she had to design an entire collection, we'd see more different looks.

I just finished watching the video and I'm annoyed. Frederique's daughter is cute and everything, but why the heck did she have to grab her daughter's hand on the runway? It ruined her walk. Very distracting, you can't focus on the dress, and this bitch is a supermodel, she should know better.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

I do think Laura's interpretations are the most sophisticated -- the characters who inspired the dresses are completely recognizable, yet taken to another level. They dresses are not my personal taste, but I can appreciate what she did. But I also think some of the others are terrific.

Anonymous said...

Dress for Success is indeed a great cause. I'm glad to see so many designers involved, including our fabulous Laura Bennett.

Cedar said...

I'm not a fan of the Woodstock dress; it's a little obvious, and looks too much like other things she's done. Sorry. The Pigpen dress is great, though--a perfect combination of inspiration and creativity. The red strip tops are totally Peppermint Patty.
http://www.snoopy.com/comics/peanuts/meet_the_gang/meet_peppermint_patty.html

I really like the one with the black shorts and red boots--it has the same tomboyish quality that the character has, but made to look modern and sexy.

I love the spotted orange one, which I assume is supposed to be Sally.

Anonymous said...

Uhm, I think Leggy Boy is supposed to be The Red Baron...

And -- speaking of -- Why no use of The Royal Guardsmen song on the video? A gross oversight.

"Woodstock channeled his inner showgirl when model Camilla strutted out in a bright yellow top hat and matching dress with beaded top and sassy skirt made of feathers.

"I put Woodstock in a little bitty dress. I used dyed ostrich feathers," said designer Laura Bennett, the "Project Runway" finalist from the Bravo show last fall.

But it was her vision of Pig Pen in clouds of light brown tulle and a copper jersey gown that almost stopped the show.

"Pig Pen was a little bit more of a challenge," Bennett told Reuters. "He's known for his grunge aesthetic. I wanted to give him some of my glam."

Here's the Reuters' piece. Laura is fabulous!

Anonymous said...

OK, I just imagined that this was a Project Runway challange. Can you imagine what the judges would have said? Maybe Laura's experience on PR prepared her for this challange.

Anonymous said...

OMG... WTF is up with the dead snoopy armpits! That was a sight that I could have lived my life without.
While I loved Lauras Woodstock, I think the Pigpen dress was really inspired and out of the box. She could have gone with a grungy potato sack look but the tulle dirt cloud was witty. I LOVED the peanuts characters as a child and would have thought that more designers would have stepped up and had a good time with this one. I guess they pulled a Britney ala 2007 VMA's....sorry I had to throw that in there.

Anonymous said...

I think that Laura's pigpen dress is GENIUS!!!

I think that the red/white stripped number is supposed to be Peppermint Patty, because peppermints are those colors?

Anonymous said...

I am sorry. I do like the "triple" looks. and...I quite like the zigzag on the dresses and the pants!!!! it's like...why not? girls

Brandenburg3rd said...

There were a coule that were okay, but Laura's were the top spots. woodstock, while something I could NEVER wear, was a hoot. Cute, kicky and oh so yellow. Love it. And I love the pigpen outfit. (Camilla was a far better model by far.)

Anonymous said...

Yup, just watched the highlights and you are 100% current -- looks like pretty much everyone (except our Laura) just phoned it in. Look, zig-zags! It's Charlie Brown! Black and white: Snoopy! Speaking of Snoopy, how 'bout that little number with actual Snoopy cutouts all over it? Oi. Looks like something Vincent might think up. Just plain scary.

And what did any of those Lucy outfits have to do with Lucy? It looked like the designers just designed whatever they felt like designing and then told the models to show some 'tude. Yawn.

But Laura -- yeah. She got it right. The Woodstock dress is to die for (dyed ostrich feathers! That's my girl) and the Pig Pen dress was inspired. And I love Laura's comment about how Pig Pen had a "grunge aesthetic" and she wanted to glam it up a bit.

Anonymous said...

I meant 100% CORRECT there. Not current. I should not be typing this early in the morning.

mina. said...

I appreciate how Kristin Chenoweth designed a dress for the show, in what I can only assume is homage to her amazing portrayal of Sally in the 1999 revival (even though her dress was more akin to Galinda if anything...)

But I adore Laura's ability to produce a PIGPEN inspired dress that actually captures the essence of the character, rather than simply ripping off Charlie Brown's zigzag pattern, or even worse, the red baron look, or even more worse, the red and white striped "peppermint patty" look.

Anonymous said...

Love, love love that yellow dress..and didn't Camilla rock it???

Laura's designs show a wittiness and humor lacking in many of the other designs.....

She's also just a talentless, obnoxious, anti-gay ignorant Survivor loser whose 15 minutes should have been up long ago - but she is a ruthless operator. She likes to say she's a designer - me thinks she's trying to lobby for a line at WalMart - but she's actually just a yapper on The View.

Um, yeah, they are - IF they interfere with grown up activities.

I love kids, but they don't belong on airplanes or in restaurants, or other places where there are breakable objects: places where their neglectful (over-indulgent) parents take them simply because a chihuahua is so last year.

I enjoy children around me...occasionally, and I do understand the importance of being a mother. It is a job, full time job, yes, professional job? I don't think so, unless you get paid to be a mother. But I digress. You obviously have never attended a fashion show. How a model conduct herself on the runway is crucial. She or he can make or break an outfit. Frederique's behavior was unprofessional. She's supposed to work that runway not "stroll in the park with her daughter." That is the same as bringing your kid to the office. Same kind of disruption!

Anonymous said...

Full-time? Yes. Professional? No. And to be honest I wasn't as bothered by the presence of her daughter as I was by the obnoxious and entitled "It's called BEING A MOM" response.

Children are NOT appendages that are only to be shown at specific times. No, they're not appendages but their presence is most definitely something that should be at specific times and places.

GothamTomato, I usually appreciate your comments, but please don't stereotype all children/parents because you've had bad experiences with some. "Children don't belong in airplanes or in restaurants" is going a bit far. If parents can get them to behave (and it's possible, I swear! I've seen it!) there's nothing wrong with children being there.

I agree that it would normally be unprofessional for the model to take the child down the runway with her, but to play devil's advocate for a moment, this was a show about Snoopy and Peanuts, which are pretty much kid icons. I imagine it was just that she thought it would add some appropriate fun and whimsy to the show, not that she was trying to make some supreme statement of mom-ness at everyone's expense.

Whenever Camilla wears something of Laura's, she sells it like she's getting every penny of the profits. The two of them should go into business together.

Wow, I never thought this blog was full of ageism. Honestly, not allowed on airplanes? Resturants? Go ask your mother what a "darling" you were when you first learned public manners. Bet you won't like the answer. LMAO. How silly that is. If children are such a threat, sterilize now and save the world the bother of wasting air on another you.

Kids are kids. Snoopy and Peanuts is a KID'S THEME. So there was a child there...OMG...quick get the disinfectant! Spray it all down so that no childbearing/rearing germs are spread! And squash all those biological clocks while you are at it. Really the nerve of a woman bringing her disease filled, runny nose, grubby handed offspring into a sterile, snobby environment. How revolting! How "last season" of her. Give me a break.

As for her child on the runway and "ruining" the line of the dress--bullshit. That dress doesn't need a model to strut like a nightwalker in order to sell it. It sells itself.

And it looks MUCH better on the glowing face of a mother taking a stroll with her daughter than it does on a pouty, malnourished spoiled brat prancing like a stallion in heat.

No. Give US a break and stop putting ridiculous words in our mouths. Thinking that a child doesn't belong on a runway where adult clothes are being modeled is nowhere near thinking they are disease-ridden.

LMFAO @ all of you going off about the daughter on the runway. I just watched the video and she was part of the show. She modeled the outfit right before her mother came down in the pigpen dress. As for unprofessional behavior--I saw a lot of that during the show, so why focus on the mother/child?

Someone has already said this was a fun event designed for charity and the outfits will be auctioned on Ebay. Hence the more relaxed behaviors and outlandish stylings. Its a shame that some on here don't see it as such.

I thought the show was good for the most part although I wish some designers would have taken their inspiration a little bit further than plastering snoopys all over a dress or adding stuffed animals to a sleeve. I saw one that looked like all they did was applique a brown oval on the back of the jacket and toss it in there. I LOVED the jacket with Charlie Brown's outline on the back...that was cool.

Great show and better yet, more exposure for our girl Laura! Great going girl!!!

Nope. I started by saying I like kids. I also was clear that I was refering to over-indulgent/ neglectful parents (being over-indulgent - ie; not disciplining your kids- IS being neglectful).

It was clearly in response to the poster who claimed that being a mommy is a profession. It is not a profession. It is not even a validation of your worth as a person. It is just a lifestyle choice.

And the mommies who ARE so demanding of the continual affirmation of their lifestyle choice, from society and every random person they encounter? THOSE are the very ones with the kids who do not belong in grown up places.

Oh dear,
Let me start by saying, I certainly would have liked to see the model take a fashion pose in the "Pig pen" dress, but she didn't.
It was a charity show and the object is to make money for Dress for Success. I am certain that the organizers of the show were delighted with Fredrique AND her daughter's (don't forget the daugher was showing garments that will be avalible for auction also) contribution to the show.
Anyhoo, the way the garment was modeled will not hurt the price it fetches when it is offered on e-bay, and that is the bottom line isn't it?
....and I love my mother.
