In or Out: Debra Messing

Monday, May 12, 2008 by
Debra Messing attends 'Creating Characters: Debra Messing & The Starter Wife' at The Paley Center For Media in Beverly Hills, California.

We don't know. It's not awful. A bit too severe and funereal, but smart-looking enough. Like widow's weeds crossed with sexy secretary. It might've kindasorta worked better if she hadn't gone with that hairdo. It's all just a little too Tippi Hedren for us.

I love the hair! The dress is good too, my only complaint would be the sleeve length, 3/4 or sleeveless would be better. It is kind of severe and periodish, but over all..
I vote IN.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Not sure about the skirt length, but she seems to be going for a time-dated look, and I guess that's the skirt length that goes with the shoes, and vice-versa. Nice blouse. I guess if she was really going to go all the way with the, what is it, late '50s-early '60s vibe, she'd have lacquered her hair within an inch of its life.

Is she trying to look like Parker Posey, or is that just coincidental?

It's sedate, slightly out of season; more suitable for Fall. BUT, for La Messing, a refreshing change from her ensembles looking like she's trying too hard. The silhouette is very Michael Kors/Hitchcock Blond collection he did for Fall.
Very sexy, not overdone (I agree w/ Brooklyn Bomber re: the hair).
IN.

No complaints here. If I had to change something, it would be to make one of her accessories colorful; that would cut the High Mourning look down a bit. But it's a classic, nicely fitted look that flatters her.

Not fully fabulous but more in than out. Love the top of the dress; semi-hate the hair

It's a different look for Debra, but she get's an "IN" from me.

I don't mind at all the retro inspiration and feel she definitely has the body for it (good for her, she's put on a few founds!). The look is very 1940's - '50's Hollywood film siren (r.g. Bette, Joan, Claudette, Barbara, etc.)and works with the hair. I've never been a DM fan, but this time I feel she's pulling off this look and looks great. Go, Deb!

P.S. Good Lord, that's a lotta typos. Sorry!

(e.g. "...she's put on a few founds!")

Need more coffee!

I actually love this look, fashion-wise; it's the manic gleam in her eyes in the second photo that scares me.

Gorgeous Things said...

It's not bad. Very Miss Moneypenny. I'd give the dress an "In", the hair, makeup and crazed psychotic grin an "Out"

FashionFanatic said...

A little too Jessica Tandy in The Birds for my taste. I'd say slightly OUT.

Anonymous said...

My condolences, Mrs. Messing!

Anonymous said...

We are on kind of the same wavelength - I was thinking Kim Novak in "Vertigo" - ha!

I actually like this on her, including the styling. A refreshing change from what appears to be her normal tons of red hair and whatever somebody tells her to wear. Although the length does look a tad dated, it's a look, and it's not too much of a look.

Debra Messing, you are In.

Anonymous said...

I think it IS funereal, for the occasion. Plus, she seems styled a little too messily for the look she's trying to pull off. She looks a little mussed.

Love the dress, I probably wouldn't do a black bag or shoes with it. Even like the hairdo, but the crazy eyes are out.

I think I mostly like it. I'm not sure wearing her hair down would have worked, and just about any other up-do would have definitely looked too Tippi.

But here's an outfit where SJP's red shoes and a saucy red clutch would have worked. A jolt of color somewhere would have made this less fall and funereal. But I do like that yoke/neckline detail.

Bill said...

It's different and cute and a little Our Miss Brooks. I'm fine with it.

Anonymous said...

much better than her usual efforts. At least she's wearing something chic instead of shriek!

eggs mayonnaise said...

I say IN. A refreshing change from her wilder/wackier efforts in the past. Plus, I've never seen her have a more perfect, curvey silhouette. And the hair is appropriate to the look.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Oh, yes, I like the idea (suggested by a few) of a colorful accessory--the bag or something else. But overall, she looks good.

Lilithcat said...

The skirt needs shortening, and Messing needs a comb (or is she trying to live up to her name?). Otherwise, I like.

Mary said...

Love the dress, don't mind the hair, but the makeup is really killing the look. That and her creepy crazy-eyed expression.

Anonymous said...

While Debra Messing is usually always an OUT for me this look is pretty chic. I love the dress and hair but I think she could have cheered the look up a bit by adding colored shoes, bag and jewelry.

You are right, it looks too funeral chic. My vote is IN but just by the skin on her clavicals.

It's a lovely classic look. Not completely fabulous but I've definitely seen Debra Messing looking a whole lot worse.

That dress actually reminds me of the one Jamie Lee Curtis wore in _True Lies_ when she was pretending to be a call girl. Tear off that neck thing, remove the sleeves, slick back the hair and FIERCE!!

Anonymous said...

Much better and much more polished than the previous entry, that Donna Karan number. She's IN : )

Anonymous said...

Not crazy about the color, but I like how the dress made her look curvy in all the right places.

Anonymous said...

Ditto the crazy creepy scary eyes. I wouldn't automatically have recognized her . . . and I watch a lot of Will & Grace.

I think that she looks good: the cut is flattering and gives her a little more something where she has next to nothing (bust).

Kerry said...

From the neck down she looks fabulous! Neck up, not so much. . .

"It's all just a little too Tippi Hedren for us."

LOL. Dead-on. You bitches are the best!

Anonymous said...

IN..sophisticated with a great vintage vibe. Period hair, shoes and clutch are right. A pair of blazing white rhinestone '50s climber earrings (not drops) and matching Eisenberg shoulder brooch would have finished her classic old Hollywood style to perfection (Starter Wife~Studio Head's Wife in the program~very clever, actually). For the first time in recent photos, she doesn't look like she feel off a traveling Gypsy wagon and lost her tambourine!

Anonymous said...

i love it. Compared to the usual Debra Messing fug, i think she looks fantastic.

Except for the stalker glare I like the look for her ... well, like better than many seen on her in the last couple of years.

I agree - she looks like she's going to a funeral. The funeral of her boss, with whom she was having an affair and didn't care that the entire office knew about the affair, and is now throwing it in the widow's face. Or am I reading too much into it?

LOL. That's hilarious! yes, slightly sex but still mourning the death of a loved one.

Anonymous said...

I vote in. I think it's chic and age-appropriate. It's not a ten but I would give it a seven. To make it a ten the dress should have been in a color.

Anonymous said...

oops...slightly sexY...

Anonymous said...

It's hit or miss with her, isn't it? Poor thing tries but rarely succeeds. I like the makeup and the shoes.

Anonymous said...

It looks like she just lost her husband and was forced to go to a premiere.

Anonymous said...

Love the hair, love the shoes, love everything. Simple, elegant, chic.

Anonymous said...

I don't get it. The sexually repressed secretary look doesn't do anything for her.

Anonymous said...

OUT. OUT. OUT. She looks ten years older.

Joanie said...

I actually like it. She looks neat and serious, professional but not super stuffy. Trust me, I've seen her running around town in unfortunate clothes. I'll take this look any day.

I think she looks like one of Robert Best's illustrations of Laura B. in her "Case Clothed" strip. In other words - a deffinite "IN."

Just sitting here waiting patiently for a post about SJP at the SATC premiere in London with the topiary on her head......

There's no such thing as too much Tipi Hedron.

The dress itself is an IN. It is both chic and figure enhancing. The styling is an OUT. The dress looks like it should be worn in the fall or winter. Her hairstyle is the worst part of the styling, it takes the ensemble from chic to costume-y.

eric3000 said...

Wow, I think she looks great! But it's probably because I expect her to look awful. I agree with your complaints but I think it works for her.

Anonymous said...

She looks good, but the hole outfit is a little dowdy.

Stephanie Lucas said...

Hello, I'm new here but I already love this place.

I was going to post: would it have killed her to go with a yellow or hot pink bag, or maybe something on the wrists.. but alas you beat me to it.

I like the neck treatment especially, but I think the outfit needs some little spark or quirk.

I think the adorable little hair twirl saves her from Tippidom.

In.

Cheers

what the eff guys. seriously, what the eff. there are SOOO many stars out every weekend, dressed "to the nines" shall we say, and you decide to pick 1 - (a B-list star), 2 - (an outfit even you described as just OK). Why don't you pick someone wearing something that actually is inspiring (good OR bad) and critique it.

Anonymous said...

The dress does look good on her. Unlike many of her outfits, this one does not make her look "heavy" or
"desperate to be noticed". The hair color has been toned down and looks good. The hairstyle does remind me of Tippi Hedren, Doris Day, or Kim Novak. The crazed eyes make me wonder what medication she is on.

Overall the look is IN.

I like it - she's never been my favorite, style-wise, but this is pretty good.

I like this---
so much better than the normal hot mess that she usually wears.

And this fits her too!!!!

Personally, I love the whole look. And I commend Debra for doing something more contained with her hair. Too often, she wears it in heavy hanks hanging down the sides of her face.

Anonymous said...

i think she's rockin' the entire look, head to toe. best i've ever seen her look.

Kwana said...

Now I'm loving this dress. In fact I'm loving the whole look. It's an IN for me.

I like the whole ensemble...I think she pulls it off pretty good.

The funny thing is, at least at the funerals that I have been to in the past decade (on the east coast), black hasn't been de rigueur at all...in fact, you rarely find people dressed head to toe in the color. Mostly muted colors, like dark blue, gray, etc. In fact, getups like these look like pretty normal cocktail hour getups to me!

Something is looking a little too tight and pulled in her face, though. Has she had work done, too?

They are picking celebrities who have some connection to Project Runway. Debra Messing was a guest judge.

I think she looks very nice. She's not trying to make a scene and look like a teenager like SJP does.

I hate to channel Collier Strong, but I think a bold lip could have transformed this look. Part of the severity of the black is she's soooo pale and it washed her out even more.
