In or Out: Sarah Jessica Parker

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 by
Well, everyone else will be talking about this today so god forbid we neglect to share our opinions.

Here's SJP doing double duty as both star and table setting at the Sex and the City premiere in London this week:

Dress and shoes by Alexander McQueen and headpiece by Philip Treacy.

Look, we get it. That was definitely an attention-getting outfit and hey, mission accomplished. As we said, everyone is sure to be talking about this look today - and for the rest of the week for that matter. Besides, she's basically wearing a Carrie Bradshaw costume. Good P.R., we say.

Still, we can't help thinking she could've sold it a bit better. The hair looks pretty bad, and as much as we like the shoes:

...they didn't do much for her outfit, really.

At the after-party she de-birdsnested:

And it almost looks like she's wearing a completely different outfit. A somewhat plain one in a color that does her no favors.

We get the Philip Treacy hat, but we didn't think the look came together as well as it should have, not to mention it was a bit much for a film premiere. We give her props for going there, but she just didn't pull it off.

In case you're wondering...

Who they wore!
Kristin Davis in a vintage Guy Laroche Couture dress.
Cynthia Nixon's dress is from the Calvin Klein Fall 2008 collection.
Kim Cattrall in Vivienne Westwood.

OUT! Butterflies are a no-no. The dress is actually OK.

Anonymous said...

Lol. Could do w/ out the hat, but love the dress

Anonymous said...

Is that a table centerpiece on her head?? Talk about fugly!!

Anonymous said...

out, but the skirt on the dress is reminiscent of the tutu she wore in the opening credits

Anonymous said...

She’s channeling Carrie Bradshaw, obviously, but that thing is hideous!!
I hate Kristin's dress, Cynthia's is way too revealing, and Kim's a little tamed for her. Thank you for the pics, kittens!

Sandruccia said...

I liked the dress. The pale colour was perfect as the weather in London has been unusually sunny and hotter than the Med. I agree with the shoes- what was she thinking? Who advised her on that choice?

Anonymous said...

The dress is nice but the hat was a really bad idea. I HATE HATS!!!

Anonymous said...

DRESS - IN!
SHOES AND HAT - OUT!!!!!!!

Lilithcat said...

I love the dress! But it definitely needed a lighter shoe. Leather and chiffon don't go well together (except maybe at IML, but that's another story).

The hat - well, I like a crazy hat as well as Bes-Ben, but it looks like she stole the centerpiece off the table. And I sure wouldn't want to have been the person who got stuck sitting behind her in the theatre.

Kristin Davis - good dress, but I think wearing her hair up would have improved the look. Down, it's covering up some of the beautiful detailing at the neck. Great red heels on the shoes, which go beautifully with the dress.

Cynthia Nixon forgot the top half of her dress! The bottom part is lovely, though; I like the sparkly pleating.

Kim Cattrall's has one of the weirdest hemlines I've ever seen. It looks like she walked out of the tailor's while he was still pinning it up. But I like the bustline, and the color is great on her.

Anonymous said...

WTF was she thinking? I don't get it.

Anonymous said...

Yeah i agree, I get her wearing a carrie bradshaw outfit but she should have done something wild or creative with her hair as well. I like the dress but a richer shade of green probbaly would have been better.

Kristin looks understated but nice-vewry charlotte. I was surprised at what Cynthia Nixon is wearing. That non-exisent neckline doesn't work on her.

And what the hell is going on with the hem of Kim Cattrall's dress? The top half of the dress looks great as does the color. but the bottom looks so stiff and thick. too bad. she is still a very attractive woman and looks great otherwise

It's funny that it is a show/movie about NY and it premiered in England and SJP wore all British designers. LOL.

Anonymous said...

Just gorgeous, all of them! Except Kim Cattrall's dress doesn't do much for her figure.

Anonymous said...

I know I should hate at least the hat, but I kind of love it all as ridiculous as it is.

Anonymous said...

I love the dress -- color, style and fit. The hat is like bubble gum-flavored ice cream: too ridiculous to consider seriously.

But the shoes! Or rather the fit! This is the third time I see SJP with her toes overlapping the insole. Am I (and was my mother who taught me this) wrong? Is it okay to have toe-verlap?

Hope Laurie

I like the dress a lot. The hat is a joke. What is it with British people and stupid vagina hats???

You guys are a bit harsh (but that is, of course, why I'm completely addicted to your blog).

I thought she looked pretty and that the hat was fun and in keeping with the event.

I saw "the hat" this morning as I was watching the news and I couldn't WAIT to see what you'd say!!!

Ulk!!

Love the dress...

Suzanne said...

So when they judges on PR are admonishing some designer for being "too costumey" they can whip out a picture of SJP with what looks suspiciously like the Mothers Day arrangement dh sent me on Sunday, and say "you mean LIKE THIS"?

Seriously- the Duchess is always harping on how cruel the press can be when some star sports a less than perfectly chic dress....I mean who cares?? Everyone is SO OVER STYLED these days- no more Chers at the Oscars, no more Bjorks , I was SO HAPPY to finally see someone who gave us SOMETHING to talk about!!

YvesPaul said...

God bless the one sitting behind her at the movies...

She IS the star of the movie, she could have gone in anything and the spotlight would be on her. The acorn/butterfly/flower thing is completely unnecessary.

The dress while very well made and designed, I would have really gone with a completely different color.

As for the shoes, are they from her Bitten line? I can see them on sale for $9.95.

As much as I like to defend SJP, this is a miss. Sorry. I mean, lose the headpiece for god's sakes. At least then, it would have been arguable.

FashionFanatic said...

I'm a little disappointed in their choices. The dresses in general don't do much for their figure, with the exception of maybe SJP's. I kind of like it. Well, I'm a sucker for McQueen. The hat? Only Isabella Blow could pull something like that off.

Mom said...

My reaction is that it's a lovely dress and a beautiful "hat", but the model may be getting a bit too long in the tooth for such a look. Yes, it is quintessential Carrie to undershoot the age runway by 5-10 years, but it's time to sleek it up, "Carrie."

And, OK, here's another pet peeve: Like SJP, I have veiny feet. But unlike SJP, I do NOT go bare legged if I'm wearing dressy shoes. I don't care how out-of-fashion it is to wear stockings, if I want someone to get a good look at the veins on the top of my feet, I will go to a podiatrist.

Ms Sangrail said...

Love Treacy's hats...but this one not so much.

Although I suppose we should be grateful that there wasn't a stuffed squirrel perched on her head next to the acorn cap.

SJP is looking very, um, sinewy these days, isn't she?

Anonymous said...

I loved her dress. The hat is whatever. you're right, it was obviously for attention and it was well made. Can't we forgive people sometimes who make bold choices? She's Carrie Bradshaw so I thought the spectacle was appropriate.

Cynthia had a nice dress, the others I didn't like. Well Kristin's was ok, but didn't like cattrall's at all.

Bill said...

saw the acorn cap and foliage hat and all I could think was:

This is my world.
You're just a squirrel trying to get a nut!
Now get on outta here.
Scat! Don't touch that coat..

If SJP goes a little further 'round the fashion bend, she'll be the new Isabella Blow. She was being Carrie for the premiere. Like you said - good PR. It was fun.

Nicolette said...

you are totally right about the hair/hat. thought i dont really like it, it would have been pulled off much more effectively had she pulled the hair back in simple bun. leaving it down and wild is just too much.

the shoes are fierce, they just need to be paired with a skinny jean and a cute top, not that dress.

on to the other ladies

not the biggest fan of kristin davis' dress, but as someone said earlier, having her hair up would have been better

i feel like i have seen cynthia nixon wear that dress before, and its not that attractive as it is.

i liked the top of kim cattrall's dress, but the bottom looked like she wraped a quilt around her

Anonymous said...

OUT...she looks like a frigging wedding cake and a tacky one at that. And those shoes belong to a different dress.

Please remind me why she is a fashion icon again? It looks like that girl gets dressed in the dark.

SJP's starting to look like this lady:

Loved the dress, loved the color. Possibly not the best color for her (it would have been great for me!) but it's still a lovely party dress. Shoes were all wrong. And I'm clearly in the minority but I loved the hat. She was in London, people - they wear wacky hats all the time over there so I think it ws entirely appropriate. Philip Treacy's hats are amazing confections.

The rest of the gals - meh. I would have loved Cattrall's dress if the hem hadn't been insane.

Anonymous said...

I miss hats, guys.

I'm with suzanne--at least there's something to talk about. I don't really understand the idea of actors having to dress super chic all the time anyway; they're actors! Put them in costumes! (only half kidding here)

Emma P. said...

Aww, c'mon, kids!
It's a little crazy, but remember, this was the London premiere. Ascot, anyone?
The ensemble was humorous, character and event centric.
The dress alone was divine, the shoes were a necessary departure from being too matchy-matchy.
I'm w/ Bill.
Fun.
In.

Anonymous said...

hat, no.
dress is pretty. I'm a little disapointed by all 4 girls dresses. maybe they will do better for the premiere here.

Anonymous said...

I hope she took the hat off before the movie started!! Or I feel sorry for the guys sitting oh what about 5 rows behind her.

Anonymous said...

OMG I just finished looking at Phillip Treacy site and he has some of the most beautiful, stunning and creative hats! His haute couture line is breathtaking.

Now it makes her hat choice even more bizarre knowing she had so many stunners to chose from and she picked that frigging monstrosity. Oh SJP...I will never understand you.

Anonymous said...

I think the hat might almost have worked if she'd done her damn hair. Three-foot-tall vintage-inspired fantasy head gear and Janis Joplin hair are a fatal combination.

And yes, the shoes don't match.

Anonymous said...

i think the dress looks very pretty on her. Those shoes are fantastic, but not with the dress. ...and there's not much left to say about the headpiece that hasn't already been said. i'm glad she wore it though, there are enough bland PR-robots disguised as actresses in this world.

Anonymous said...

Headless, she's a "ten".

Anonymous said...

The dress is kinda pretty, but not a great color for her. She really needs to stop getting accessory advice from Cher.

veruca salt said...

I get the hat idea, although I agree the rest of SJP's styling was off the mark. The coloring of the dress is better suited to Kristin Davis.

Not crazy about her dress, but Cynthia Nixon's makeup and hair look fab! She is the best looking one of the bunch.

Kwana said...

It's an out. Very Carrie Bradshaw but you're right the color is not right for her with her hair and they made that hat mistake on one of the episodes with Burger and he made a joke out of it. Did they not remember that? I'm still so at that movie.

Anonymous said...

Carmen Miranda better contact Kermit the Frog and Swamp Thing asap for that paternity test.

(Not even that heinous headgear can dampen my spirts on Tony Nomination day!)

Brian said...

I think the dress is way cute.

CQAussie said...

Cynthia Nixon looked the best. I didn't like Kristin's shoes or the dress at the bottom, it looked heavy. The top part of the dress was fun though. Kim's dress was fun but her shoes made her legs look stumpy.

SJP's outfit would been better without the hat. I love the shoes but it probably would have looked better on another dress. The dress itself I loved. Her hair has been better. Love the bracelet and the clutch.

Sewing Siren said...

I love the hat! It is so very English. I do not think that cocktail hats should be worn with the hair hanging down, though. A sleek little cocktail dress or suit, would have probably been better than the kicky little dance dress.
But I like the dress. I wonder why she didn't wear green shoes too.

Anonymous said...

Side point.

Um, honey? If you're wearing open-toed shoes, you need to paint your toenails. Okay? Please?

Alicia said...

I love the hat. I vividly remember the first British wedding I saw and, while I can't remember WHO was getting married, I have many great memories of those wild, eccentric, wonderful hats. I wanted people to one day wear butterflies and anime-esque netting to my wedding. Unfortunately it didn't happen, but I still love the hats.

So of course I love this one. The hair - too much for the hat. It definitely needed to be more prim to really work it. I love the cut and lines of the dress but agree that a darker color would have flattered SJP all the more. The shoes? They belong with a black skirt suit. Not so much with this. But even with all that I don't hate the look, I actually slightly like it. Probably because of the hat.

Anonymous said...

I guess I'm the minority here, but I like the shoes and I think they match in a weird way, if you look at them carefully they have a tint of purple and green that matches the trim of the dress (I think it was not capture in the photos).

anyway, she is definitely channeling Carrie and for that the whole outfit (and the hair) is totally appropriate. for me the biggest disappointment was Cynthia Nixon's dress, at a certain age (I can say it because it's close to mine) you don't show your boobs like that, it just doesn't look nice at all (even when you could have perfectly good boobs).

Anonymous said...

I scrolled down and thought my eyes were going to bug out of my head! SJP's hat decorations would have looked lovely on a something more horizontal with a wide brim and some flair. This was just ....odd. Fashion should be flattering as well as eye-catching.
The dress, fine. The shoes, completely wrong.

And Honey, you ARE getting a bit old for this.

As for the rest, Kristin wins, hands down.

Anonymous said...

Loved the dress! color looked better in the outside shots, but it's really pretty & the proportions are lovely. i agree with tlo about the shoes -- on their own they are great, but too sporty (they remind me of a spectator pump) they don't go with a frothy, tulle/chiffon-ey thing.

the hat is great --- on my front hall table. i get that they were trying to have fun, but it's a little over the top. lots of other attention getters that wouldn't have looked so wrong.

Dave said...

Her dress looked like she was wrapped in huge cabbage or lettuce leaves to me...pale ones to boot!

JRH said...

Cynthia Nixon - I don't know that I can say much about the dress, but I have to say that she looks spectacular in that second photo. The hair and makeup are divine. I don't think I have ever seen her look more beautiful. Bravo.

"We get the Philip Treacy hat"

Really? I didn't get it. maybe the problem I had was that it looked as if it had been dyed to match the dress, which is a little too prom.

Rainwood said...

I didn't notice until the close-up that the trim on the dress matches 'The Hat.' It doesn't help much though. And I wouldn't classify that as a vagina hat as it seems to portray the entire birth canal!

As for the color, I agree with what Maggie Smith's character in' Gosford Park' had to say: "Difficult color green. Very tricky."

Anonymous said...

Handbag and shoes match...Liked it all...the spirit of Carrie Bradshaw and the reality of SJP.

Oh, Sarah, so close.

I actually like this dress very much. The shoes are absolutely wrong for it. How does this happen?

There's nothing really to be said about the headpiece. Is there? Really? Joke much? c'mon folks.

Anonymous said...

That pea soup green is not a pretty color on her. She looks like an angry ballerina. I don't like anything she's wearing. Cynthia looks GORGEOUS, she never looked that sexy.

Anonymous said...

Can you say chiquita banana?

Anonymous said...

The hat is kinda, fabulous, but not on SJP. Unfortunately, it makes her look really, really "long in the tooth" (my favorite catchphrase from this blog) and a bit too "Hocus Pocus" for the red carpet.

I actually feel bad for Ms. SJP, or Carrie, or...whoever she was channeling for this event. The color of the dress & hat are pretty awful on her. The shoes aren't so bad, but there were probably other choices she could have made. But, like I said, I actually feel really, really bad for her in these images.

PhantomMinuet said...

Well, I love hats, and I especially love Treacy's amazingly creative and ostentatious hats, so I say go, SJP. It's faaaabulous!

OTOH her hair should have been properly dressed to wear that particular hat, so she loses a few points.

Anonymous said...

I like the dress. Really. It's all about early spring, and the hat is just foppy fun. She doesn't quite pull it off in these pictures, but personality and animation (not the butterfly, SJP!) would make a difference. Of all of them, she seems to be weathering the most poorly, I'm sorry to say. Time to cut the hair, color it, something. She's actually turning into Patricia Field, I think. (And therefore tremble).

Also, put me in the minority of those who actually like Cynthia Nixon's dress. I think she looks good. Kim's dress looks like something Astro got to after the Jetsons picked it up at the dry cleaners, and lovely, underserved Kristin Davis has weird boobage and a dress length unflattering on everyone.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I could have lived without a movie. They just all look like they are trying too hard, when they'd rather be donning reading glasses and having tea.

The neckline on Kim's dress is perfect for her. I like the dress, I just wish she had picked a more amusing pair of shoes to go with it.
Cynthia looks like she forgot her blouse. The bodice of the dress looks like suspenders. I don't like that you can see her cleavage in front and on the sides. The fabric is nice, though.
Kristin's is very tasteful, but do I see panty lines in the close-up bottom right picture?

This is VERY interesting:

Sarah Jessica Parker has reportedly upset her 'Sex and the City: The Movie' co-stars after being offered the best dresses to wear to the film's premiere.

Parker has been contacted by some of the world's biggest designers to step out in one of their outfits on the red carpet next month - much to the annoyance of Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon.

The trio are now allegedly refusing to arrive in the same white limousine as Parker as they don't want her getting all the attention at the New York bash.

A source told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "There is huge rivalry about who is wearing what and the film's stylist Patricia Field is stuck in the middle. They are determined not to be outdone by each other.

"They are now demanding their own individual cars so each star can have five minutes on the carpet with all eyes on them - rather than SJP getting all the attention. It's turning into a logistical nightmare."

In an effort to look her best on the red carpet, Parker - who plays the movie's lead character Carrie Bradshaw - has embarked on a strict diet.

The source added: "She has been working out furiously and is on a special berry diet to look her best for the big night."

Anonymous said...

I think SJP went a little crazy with her garden theme. I don't like her dress at all. The shoes don't go with that dress and the hat looks like something my mother puts on the table every summer. Kim looks wonderful. So does Kristin. Cynthia is missing her top. You can see her boobs.

I hated the dress until I saw the "after-party" picture. You can actually see the two tones of chiffon not captured in the other pictures; now I like it a lot more. I still hate the trim, though. It looks like she's leaning against the wooden fence.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure the hat was meant to be a joke, so I'll give her that...
the color of the dress, though.....blech! Honestly, that shade of green would look good on exactly whom? Maybe someone with olive-toned skin? I dunno, definitely not a person with a pale complexion like SJP.
Everyone else I thought looked good...Cynthia pulled off that look and was beautiful.
Not clear on the whole pantyhose boycott thing....ladies, can you enlighten me? When did that become acceptable? And bare feet in those skyscraper shoes? Did they all have to run home afterwood and soak their tootsies in an epsom salt bath, because they were in such pain? Blisters, anyone?!!

I love the hat, I think it's fun and whimsical and it makes a definite statement. And it is a beautifully executed hat. No, it isn't appropriate for everyday wear but it is definitely appropriate at a movie premiere in LONDON (doesn't anybody remember the hats at the Chuck and Cammie wedding??). Unfortunately, the color of that dress is all wrong, it reminds me of that Garnier commercial where SJP dyes her hair some godawful brown color (brown sugar # barf), maybe she hired the art director from the commercial to be her color consultant, and might I say, Bad Idea SJP.

Jenster said...

Who else could wear a vagina hat/table centerpiece/faux-bird's-nest as well as SJP? Without it, she would have been just another dressed-up celebrity on the red carpet (yawn). More power to her, I say.

Damn, my internet access was out all day & I missed all the fun!

I'm thinking that the Monarch butterflies were a nod to the royal family (since they were in London) - and the hat does look like something you'd see at Ascot. She clearly doesn't take herself too seriously, (which is a good thing). And that allows it to work.

If some jerk like Sharon Stone, or one of those other oh-so-serious actresses who think that everything they do is a major media event for the little people, I'd say they looked like the dog's dinner. But SJP has a perspective and sense of humor (to go with the dancer's body), and so she can get away with it.

She gets it, so she can get away with it.

The Brits are probably falling all over themselves adoring the hat. SJP wore it especially for the fashion crowd over there. Doubt she'd wear anything like that on this side of the pond.

Made me wonder if hubby Matthew had to carry the hat around for her the rest of the evening. :-D

Dear god! She is trying to lose weight??"

The last time I saw her, she was on her bike at the Farmer's Market, and not as thin as she is when she's working. She was also buying a big cookie at one of the stalls.

I'm guessign she's just getting down to her fighting weight.

I do like the dress, especially in the "after-party" pictures.

The more I look at the hat, the more I like it. It's hypnotizing me.

Still hate the shoes with the outfit, and by extension, her handbag. Why can she match her bag to her shoes, but not the rest of her outfit? Not matchy matchy, but y'know, at least something that compliments the dress.

p.s. I think Cynthia looks the sexiest of all of them. Love the pleating on her skirt. It makes me think of Jillian......

That hat looks like something out of a community theater production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" - can we say HI QUEEN TITANIA.

I actually love the dress, truth be told.

Babies,
There is NO kind way of saying this..
She is too damn old for this stuff!!
And frankly NOT that attractive a woman!!!
She is kind of a plain girl and basically the best role in which she was cast was a Sarah Sanderson because really .. she looks a lot like a witch.
The outfit is incredibly Isabella Blow and she does not have the brains nor personality to pull off an Izzy Blow or Anna Piaggi kind of get-up.
She needs to start wearing stuff that is kind pretty and classic and elegant because the eccentric get-ups make her look like a train wreck.
I LOVE Lee (Alexander McQueen) and worship Phillip Treacy. I have like 4 of his hats.
But I limit myself to the fedoras and trilbys and stuff that well, looks more...sane.
She is overrated and plain and a mom...
We all have to grow up at some point and really her moment has passed.
Love,
Milla

I thought the dress was passable but blah and a little gross.

The headpiece made the entire outfit heinous.

I just get the vibe "The Hat" was a pitiful attempt to make absolutely sure all the attention was on SJP.

I have to say that when I saw a photo earlier of them, I thought that Kim was the best dressed, followed by Kristin. Cynthia has no chest, so I don't understand why she's emphasizing that. And as for SJP, I think you are right, that it's a Carrie costume. The designers are both British, so give her cred for that, being that she's in London and all. I liked the dress, but you are right, she could have pulled it off better. She looked more dressed for the Derby than a movie premiere.

Anonymous said...

Ugh. I hate the whole look. I keep waiting for her to whip out a Wishbone Salad Dressing bottle.

The shoes were OK but her feet didnt look good. I loved the dress and yea the head thing needed to stay at The Kentuky Derby and not a movie premiere!

maybe she should just stay at home and stick to the sweats.... what is she doing wearing fabulous designer's clothes in London? the nerve of this mom! unbelievable!!! and wearing a crazy hat!!!

I wish TLO will post the picture of Vivienne Westwood arriving at this premiere.... that's kind of scary... but maybe she is not a mom....so she can do whatever!

The headpiece is fun, and fortunately we know she's not a royal or else she'd of worn the damned thing all day long. As for the shoes, maybe something happened. Perhaps the right pair were lost in transit, or maybe a sneaky butler walked away in them.

Sewhat? said...

Oh look ! Instead of a "Vagina Hat" she is wearing a "Cervical Cap" !!!

Actually I LOVE the hat and the sense of humor that goes with it. She needed prettier shoes.

The rest of them looked TERRIBLE. KC's legs are too thick for sandals that cut across the ankle and the dress is frumpy looking on her, Kristen's dress looks cheap and Cynthia Nixon forgot the pencil rule.

Anonymous said...

I looked at the first picture and thought that she was wearing a moldy bagel on her head. I guess my diet is getting to me.....

Anonymous said...

While normally I'm a big hat girl, and adore Treacy's creations, it appears SJP has picked a design that even a member of the royal family wouldn't touch. And let's face it, as Joan Rivers said about QEII, if you took a doily, sprinkled kitty litter on it, and then passed it off as a hat, Her Maj would wear it.

Otherwise, the hair should have been up and back and simple. She also should have definitely worn a different shade of green (if there is a shade she can wear).

Joanie said...

The dress is lovely but the rest of it not so much.

Okay, I'm outing myself here to a very devoted legion, so go easy on me, please. I've never been a SATC fan nor have I ever really liked the silliness of most of the show's fashions that made their way onto magazine covers, other TV shows, or heaven forbid -- real people.

I miss the awkward SJP from Square Pegs and LA Story and all the rest, before she became some fashion icon to whom I totally can't relate. Hell, I could relate to her better when she was in Hocus Pocus. And yes, I guess that makes me a witch. Whatever.

No more centerpieces for hats. Lucy and Ethel wore their feedbags better.

Stephanie Lucas said...

I've tried to put my finger on the thing that bothers me the most about this (I'm really bothered by the fact that SJP felt the need to not only spotlight herself by the design of the dress and headware, but the color that pops so dramatically from the palette of the other three, but she is Queen) and here it is:

I wish I could upload a jpg to illustrate, but if you draw a line to define the overall shape of her look, it's a triangle, with the apex at the top of the woodland topiary. That's what bugs me. If she was wearing the hat with an outfit that hugged her curves more, it wouldn't bother me.

Cynthia is seriously gorgeous in these photos. Only one who doesn't look like she smoked for a week before coming to this premiere. Dress isn't my favorite, but good enough. I don't have a problem with the smaller chest/low neckline... tired of the overly large chests spilling onto red carpets.

Kristen/Kim... shrugging. Neither look is very flattering, and there's something off about the varying levels of formality. Kristen looks like a wedding guest, Kim's a wannabe homecoming queen.

Carrie, I mean Sarah: Even with the hat, she just looks tired. Didn't see anyone talk about her makeup, but YUCK. Scrape some of that crap off your eyes, will ya? I recall her choice for shoes with her Bitten dress a few days back were also off... Maybe she's trying to start some new thing where the shoes have nothing to do with the dress at all. If there was any purple/green tinge that was supposed to accent the dress, it doesn't come through in the pix.

Anonymous said...

SJP's problem is definitely the hair with that fab hat. Can you imagine how GREAT that hat would have looked with the quinessential Veronica Lake straight, gleaming, swooped to the side and draped over one eye hairdo? Didn't she have a stylist? Why didn't Patricia Fields stop her from wearing a poofy prom dress when the hat clearly demanded a fitted peplum '40s style suit with an outrageous sheer blouse with ruffled stand up collar underneath? WTF are those tacky shoes doing on her feet when they have no connection and complement NOTHING she is wearing? Did she leave all of her spectacular Manolo pairs in New York? Inquiring minds want to know...sadly, this time she is OUT.

I am a mom too.
But when you are a mom, you have to be more aware of yourself and show some level of decorum. Mostly not to embarass your kids...
I also said that she does not have the brains or personality to pull off an Isabella Blow outfit.
That is mostly my issue.
I dress in crazy London designers all the time. I have a closet full of McQueen and Westwood and Galliano and Henry Holland and what not.
But I wear the stuff ONE piece at a time with classic staples because I have a 14 year old who would be mortified if I took to the street looking like that.
One thing is being a mom and being fabululous.
This looks crosses from the fabulous to the ridiculous, particularly on her.
One thing is being whimsical and having fun with fashion, and another one is looking like the Pride Week float for Teleflora.
At least out of respect for how you kid will look at you 10 years from now when looking at the pictures.

This is the best hat I've seen since Bette Midler wore a 45 RPM record on her head for a personal appearance at Tower Records!

It's Auntie Mame grabbing an ornament off the Christmas tree and sticking it on her cloche hat. It's silly and stupid and wonderful.

It's calling on "good taste' and the arbiters of same and saying "fuck 'em if they can't take a joke".

I recall her also wearing that to present on the Grammy's. It was Come Go With Me, by the Del Vikings. (I have no idea why I these little bits of trivia stick in my head, but they do).

Personally, I think SJP is gorgeous. She's not the Marcia Brady, all-American whitebread girl: She's ethnic, and didn't waspify her features to work. Given the pressure she was under to do that, (I used to act, so I know), I'd say it's pretty fabulous that she didn't.

Hi all, very late to the party and didn't have time to read all the comments so if this has already been said, please forgive me.

Brits love their hats and since this was a London premiere, I think SJP was informed by the local sensibilities (much like Diana wearing that red dress in Japan). Not a wedding goes by without someone trying to upstage the bride by wearing an extravagant hat; something we Americans are simply not used to. Not to mention other extreme hat venues such christenings or the mother of them all, Ascot.

If it matters, I'm happily married to a Brit and never feel the need to don wild headgear at these events.

Some of these comments are harsh. I've never been a fan of SJP, but I do appreciate what she's trying to do here. At least she's taking some risks and not taking things so seriously. Definitely something to be said for that. I also think that color works fine on her.

Cynthia Nixon looks gorgeous (what beautiful grey eyes!), but those suspender bits on the dress should be widened so as to accommodate breast support of some kind.

And as much as I love Vivienne Westwood, that dress does nothing for the wearer, nor does the other red one.

thanks GT for explaining it so well, I agree with you!

also for Milla: SJP doesn't have the brains? you're kidding, right? you seem to forget who is behind the whole SATC thing? she has the brains and the personality, thank you very much!
and finally, how is her son gonna be embarrassed for a hat? She is an ACTRESS!!!! I guess he will be pretty well educated to understand that in the future.

Milla said...

I am sorry, to me SJP, like a lot of celebrities is overrated.
And how is she "ethnic"?
Her name is Sarah. Jessica. Parker. As far as I know she is not anything but Anglo-Saxon.
She did not go to University. Intelligent actress? Try Natalie Portman or Jodie Foster.
She was not the brains behind the show, the producers, writers and network and even Patricia Field, were the brains behind the show.
Not that it was that great or interesting a show to start with.
I will take Buffy over SATC any day.
Much better writing.
And I have the right to find ugly whomever I want to. I do not have the obligation to say that ALL women are beautiful when I don't think that.
I often say Posh is hideous. I also think Rachel Zoe is freaky.
Mary Kate Olsen... ewwwww. One step away from extra in "Triller".
I do think fat women are beautiful. I think some thin women are also beautiful.
But I am sorry if I call the "Emperor's New Clothes" on SJP. It's not that she is not white, all- American Christie Brinkley pretty.
She is just not pretty in my opinion and is way over exposed on the basis of ONE show and not that great a show at that.
Isabella Rossellini is beautiful. Iman is beautiful. Salma Hayek is beautiful. Rihanna and Queen Latifah are too.
And all of them are way more intelligent, talented , poised and better dressed at any given time than SJP. And they all are way more ethnic. Some of them like Salma, twice over.
Yet, they don't get a 5th as much press as this chick and seem about 30 times more self-aware.
I have no credibility to defend.
I was not establishing credibility and I am not the saviour of the self-esteem of all women.
Just like everyone else I have opinions and a right to them.
And I am not a democratic " I love everyone, everyone is beautiful kumbaya" person.
When I think something, I say it and it is totally honest.
If people like it fine. I do not care a hoot if my opinions are supported or popular of not.
Being an actress and on TV does not make you any different or special or more beautiful or glamourous than anyone else.
As far as I am concerned, they should make less money than a teacher or a family physician.
It's a fun job and they should be happy they have it.
I say that because I have acted professionally, was on TV in Mexico and in plays, Shakespeare plays, getting paid here in the US, and it is just a job. One that is relatively not that hard when compared to let's say... being a neurochemist.Which I have also done.
I do not understand why everyone makes a big deal about these people.

Wait, do you seriously not know that she's Jewish? Do you really think all Jewish people have identifiably "Jewish" names?

And what does her not having gone to college (as we say in this country!) have to do with her intelligence? Maybe she decided to pursue an acting career?

Milla, I kind of enjoy your posts most of the time even when they are a bit self-referential (and sometimes self-reverential), but in this thread I think you may be a little over the top. You don't see why people fawn over celebrities (who is fawning on this blog, anyway?) but also purport to be emotionally heavily invested in fashion, which is, sorry to say, celebrity-driven. In addition, if you post that somebody - anybody - looks like a witch, or should not embarrass her kid by wearing a silly hat, or must be stupid because she didn't go to Princeton, you are clearly expecting somebody else to respond. Fine. But why do we have to get another, longer, defensive post?

sigh. oh well, fire away.

Milla said...

Well, where I come from and when I have needed anything from the Jewish Community Center, the first thing they ask you is your last name. And they raise an eyebrow when it is not a typical Jewish last name.
How am I supposed to know the woman is Jewish? Shoot I do not know what the hell "The Hills" are about or why they are a big deal.
I think it would be racist on my part to assume her ethnicity because of her traits. To me she is just not that attractive a chick. That's all.
And yes, I think that academic credentials are evidence of dedication, intelligence and accomplishment.
Most serious actors go to school for drama.
And fashion is only celebrity driven at its most superficial PR level.
Fashion is an art and a business.
And most of the longstanding and influential trends in fashion have not come from celebrities but from political movements ( i.e The French Revolution led to Empire Gowns) , the arts (The Watteau Gown), socio-economic circumstances such as wars( The narrow silhouettes of the 40's) and countercultures ( punk, disco, power suits) as well as from technological advances ( invention of sewing machines and synthetic fibers). But these are things you learn in University. Sorry, college. Not on Us magazine or Perez Hilton or TMZ. To me college is community college or high school depending if I am in France, Canada or the UK.
Celebrities are just the powdered sugar on top of the donut. I would much rather sell to millions of regular people than to a handful of "celebrities". Designers who focus their business on celebrities and don't have accessible diffusion or accesory lines tend to not do so well financially.
I do not do long defensive posts on purpose.I would love to just be able to say "SJP looks like a parade float and to me is unattractive and not that big a deal". But I catch all kinds of crap from the alpha females.
I just feel that I should not let myself be pushed around.

I actually like the green dress that SJP is wearing. Much more attractive and more appropriate than many of her outfits. However, those shoes do not go with the dress AT ALL. Sarah, sweetie, are you color-blind? Is that really the explanation? Could it be that simple? Nah. Her fashion crimes and misdemeanors are far too numerous and wide-ranging to be so easily accounted for.

The hat? Yeah, it's pure costume. Sarah knows it's over the top, and it looks like she's having fun with it. So I guess after all I'll say she's in. In the end, the worst sin fashion can commit is to be joyless.

JP nailed it on the head. Back in mom's day, they wore hats all the time and knew something about proportion.

If Queen Elizabeth can wear hats (hell, she wore a hat to her son's wedding that looked like she had pampas grass growing out of her head) then SJP is certainly young/old enough to wear one.

However, the thin, tall hat is better suited for a suit. Her lovely dress would have been more complimented by a brimmed hat.

Her hair needed to be styled--either shortened or pulled back.

The person who suggested she paint her peeped toenails is also on the money.

When in London, you need your stodgy British gays, not the snarky New York ones.

*sigh*

I can deal with SJP wearing silly things. But it was kind of obnoxious of her to blatantly steal focus on the red carpet. She's the above-the-tile star and one of the producers. She does 5 times the number of interviews as the other 3 women. Isn't that enough? She has to (literally) rub fakes leaves and brush in Kim Cattrall's nose?

BTW, all four of them look too costumey. I look at it as karmic payback for having the premiere in London instead of NYC.
