From Uma to Puma

Wednesday, May 07, 2008 by
Hot on the heels of the latest rumor that Christian will be designing the clothes for an Uma Thurman movie, comes this:

"While we’re still waiting for stylish Brit Victoria Beckham to start rocking Christian Siriano’s designs, the Project Runway winner has teamed up with another English singer to show off his new mini clothing collection for Puma. Shine chanteuse — and Kanye West collaborator — Estelle helped Christian unveil the first item from the fifteen-piece line at her record release party at a Manhattan club last night. Siriano created her distinctive ruffle-neck dress by deconstructing three existing Puma tanks. What’s more, he’s dubbed the R&B artist a muse. He tells PEOPLE, “For me it’s really exciting because it’s great to work with an artist that wants to be more creative and more fashion forward. That’s why I love her. I mean how fabulous is she?” We definitely think the dress is pretty fabulous and can’t wait to see more."

We have to say, the dress IS pretty fabulous.

What do you bitches think?

Ironically, one of Christian's biggest influences, Alexander McQueen, designed a fierce pair of Pumas himself:

Although we doubt we'll be wearing them for our workouts any time soon.

In other, OTHER Christian news, we hear that his Bluefly collection is on its way soon. Save your pennies if you're in the market for some puffy sleeves!

By the way, if you're hungry for some Bravo reality show bitchiness, we started taking a look at this year's hair whores on Shear Genius over at the TLo blog.

It's amazing he can tailor puffy sleeves and ruffles to activewear....

Can't wait for his Bluefly collection! Hope there's some menswear in there...

I think the mannequin rocked the look best. One word for Ms. Estelle: Spanx.

It's great to see Princess taking advantage of all the opportunities coming his way. He's becoming so ubiquitous, he's like a cross between Zelig and the Energizer Bunny.

But I hope those McQueen sneakers don't start a trend, and destroy the last bastion of non-pointy shoes.

Hmmm. . . it is? Is it flattering on her? Not convinced. The one on the mannequin is different than the one on Estelle, though I'm not sure it's actually better.

Frankly, the whole thing sounds like a PR challenge: Take 3 t-shirts and turn them into a party dress. You have until midnight. Here's a $10 for trim, and you can have at the Bluefly accessories wall.

Note to Gotham, yes, Zelig, exactly!

I like the dress, but it looks better on the dress form than on that woman!

Good to see Christian doing well. People seem to like his young, hip, energetic clothes.
To be fair to Ms Estelle, she's scrunched up against the foamcore backdrop with papparazzi 3 feet from her. Her posture kills it in this shot only --I'm sure she looked fabulous once she got away from the backdrop.
Love the shoes! Those will be knocked off at Payless before you know it.

Can't get past the Puma logo. Too sporty. I'd expect to see it on Venus or Serena or Anna Kournikova, but not on a singer.

Agree with all - much better on the dress form than on the young lady.

I'm pleased for Christian, but that dress is all sorts of fug.

Ick.

The ruffly neckline worked on the dressform, on her, I though it was a wierd necklace. Although I actually like those puffy sleeves, and it pains me to admit that.

That would be redundant. The dress IS a spanx basically, it even gives the dress form pantie lines.
I think it looks like a dress that was designed as a tank and then somebody added sleeves to it. And that's what it is. I agree with da Bomber, it looks like a PR challenge, not a garment ready for retail sales.

The dress is fabulous. It's very young and trendy. I love it!

I LOVE those sneakers. They are FABULOUS! I want them now.

Good for PPS! I'm glad he's doing so well. He needs money to start his own collection.

Puma's Kiddie line sure is ugly. Christian looks very uncomfortable in that hideous sweater.

Gorgeous Things said...

Not lovin' it. Probably for the same reason as Agnes Gooch - you either need seriously controlling panties or a body like Gisele Bundchen.

On a normal looking woman it's a hot mess.

I like Estelle (looove her single, "American Girl" with Kayne), but not digging the dress on her. Maybe it's just a bad angle, bad photo, or whatever... The dress looks fabulous on the mannequin, but didn't translate so well on the human form.

Those McQueen shoes are A.MA.ZING.
I suspect Tim Gunn will be sporting a pair very soon!

I'm the least athletic person on the planet, but a huge fan of PUMA's. Can't wait to see the rest of Christian's work for Bluefly & Puma.

Anonymous said...

Hate it. Seriously. Doesn't look good on a real woman and the neck is impractical for doing actual sports.

But the shoes are splendid.

FashionFanatic said...

The idea is fierce, but I don't like the sleeves, and you'd have to be - like any PPS design - super skinny to pull that off.

I'D work out in those McQueens.

Good thing I'm not Nina - it bored me. (Although I think it looks better on the human than on the form.)

I don't know what you guys are smoking, it's a cute, young, sporty dress, not a red carpet gown. The dress is adorable!

Anonymous said...

What's with all the hate????? The dress is FABULOUS!!!!!! I can't wait to see the whole colection.

Anonymous said...

OK, I love love love Princess but PUMA come on, he can do so much better.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

No hatred, anonymous. Some of us just don't like the outfit.

I can't be the only one who sees a difference between the two versions, can I? The top on the mannequin is longer, and there's the ribbed band over a skirt--at least, that's what it looks like to me.

I do think the one on the mannequin might be good minus the sleeves and the neck thingy. Really, if you squint and pretend it's sleeveless, it's cute in a sporty way.

The avant-garde British designer Hussein Chalayan was recently announced as Puma's new creative director. I hardly think that a collaboration with the brand is below Princess, quite the opposite.

For some people here disagreement equals hatred.

Let's not forget that he's 22. He's doing remarkably well for his age.

I see that too, Brooklyn Bomber. I actually like the long-sleeve version a lot better.

Anonymous said...

Or maybe it's the same length. It's just bunched up in the first two pictures? Now, I'm confused.

Thombeau said...

OMG those McQueen Pumas are INSANE! I love them!

Hells Kitten said...

It's so black and safe I cannot even see it.
I'm bored to death.

He's a little cutie I suppose, I am just not a fan of what I've seen him do so far.

It is the same dress, If you look closely at the picture of Estelle, you will see that there is a seam just above hip level and the fabric is ribbed below that seam. It looks like there is a ribbed band at the sweep of the dress on the dress form because the dress is so tight that it is clinging to the cage that is below were the padded part of the dress form ends ( and the cage is smaller in circumference). The sleeve on the garment on the dress form looks super long because there is no arm in it. When a human arm is in the sleeve the extra length bunches up between the wrist and forearm to make a regular length long sleeve.
If you were to remove the neck piece and the long sleeve, as you suggest Bomber, all that would be left is the regular Puma tank (no PP design).

agnes gooch called it on the spanx and gothamtomato made me laugh with the Zelig comment.

Exactly.

A big, stretchy YUK from me. Sorry PPS, not at all fierce. AND, the shoes look like something the plaster gnome in my neighbor's front yard would wear.

Christian is EVERYWHERE!

I just caught PPS on TRL doing a Tim Gunn makeover segment for Mother's Day. He took three young women and made them over to suit their mother's taste. The funny thing is pre-makeover each girl was dressed head-to-toe Christian-style (neo-punk/new wave: black, black & more black)and he made them over in this season's brights, girly-dresses, make-up, etc..

Where will Christian appear next?

I'm indifferent to the dress--Christian designs a black dress, what a surprise--but I love those shoes.

Milla said...

I want to be positive. I really do.
But I don't know what to think about his stuff right now.
The one think it screams at me is "fashion student". And we are not talking here about extraordinary fashion student, but regular B-C fashion student who ends up getting a job on a "house line" like I.N.C or Valerie Stevens because he's good at construction and technical stuff but does not have a sense of what will set a trend.
I know because I am a fashion student...
***Sigh***
I want to say it's fierce but... in good conscience, I can't.
Love ya babies,
Milla

I'm happy for Christian, but so far I haven't seen anything designed by him since the season ended that REALLY impressed me. Let's see how he does again at Fashion Week.

The dress does NOT flatter her. She looks fat and trashy.

She DOES NOT look fat. What are you talking about? And trashy? C'mon...

Anonymous said...

Good for him, but I'm still not a fan. Deconstructing tank tops? And I don't think it's particularly fab on the human model. Women with hips need not apply. But that is his style.

Anonymous said...

While I think the dress looked fierce (if not UBER predictable in its black sleek puffy sleeved style) on the dress form it looked pretty shitty on her. Probably because CHRISTIAN CAN"T DESIGN TO FLATTER NORMAL SIZED WOMEN!!!!

sorry for shouting, I just get frustrated over christian hype.

Anonymous said...

Count me as another who thought the dress looked cute on the dressform but wasn't very flattering on Estelle. PPS really does struggle with curves.

Anonymous said...

it definitely looks better on the dressform than on her...

Anonymous said...

I really do like this dress, and I also think Estelle looks nice in it. A few technicalities, but still nice. The dress form probably works it better because it doesn't have to walk around all night or move around at all. I'm sorry, but I have to defend Christian on this one. The puma logo though, I'm kind of on the fence for that.

So what would not-fat look like to you? A 12" waist and 15" hips? Her waist is waspy in that from the side (and from the front she still looks skinny, just less defined in the waist).

Suzanne said...

Why does he have this obsession with neck scrunchies? They look ridiculous. The dress is OK....nothing to write home about.

I am really curious as to how PPF is handling his new found fame....do they need to grease his head so it can fit through a doorway?

I agree with others that his clothes only look good on model-type bodies. Even this gorgeous woman with her lovely figure is not flattered by this dress.

And agreed, too: this looks like the result of 36 hour PR challenge.

The dress is adorable, Christian looks adorable, it's all just adorable! Love.

I read this as penises! Ha.

It's not a bad dress, but doesn't do anything for her. Definitely better on a more athletic type.

Go away, Christian.
