Judging the Judges: Michael Kors Spring 2008 Collection

Wednesday, September 12, 2007 by
Alright kittens, it's time to get our BITCH ON! The Duchess showed his Spring 2008 collection and we want to hear what you think.

Like all successful designers, Michael Kors knows his customer and keeps his focus fairly narrow to cater to them. You'll never see anything particularly innovative or fashion-forward with his name on it, but you'll always see classic looks, perfectly executed. Along with the requisite blacks and whites that he shows every season he brought in some wonderful pinks and citrus-y colors that pop and give the collection a fresh, feminine, flirty vibe. We're not crazy about the print pieces, but the striped pieces look fabulous. Love the pairing of the pink and orange and yellow and orange (or as the fashionistas would say, "salmon and tangerine" and "lemon and tangerine"). Don't love the lavender, though. Thankfully, there was only one metallic. We hope that trend has finally died down.

The big floppy hats and gigantic Jackie O sunglasses complete the Hamptons-y vibe that he likes to roll around in and the Rhoda head scarves are a perfect touch. What do you bitches think?

As a whole, I think the collection is fabulous and except for the skimpy stuff, fits my lifestyle to a tee. Just please, spare me from the blue clothes. That one dress is killing me.

I'm very happy to see COLOR! Thank you. And you can never be too Rhoda Morgenstern for me.

The yellow gown is gorge,(though I think I've seen it before).

However, I fear for that woman in green. With that enormous hat, I fear she could walk right into traffic.

Gorgeous! I love the explosion of colors!

Fabulous collection, except the usual mumu dresses. What I like about Michael Kors' collections is that I can really see myself wearing most of these outfits.

I always love the Duchess's work! I'm also a big fan of the color. There were definitely a few clunkers and some yawners, but I really like this collection as a whole.

She looks like a Dr. Seuss character!

(but in a good way - I love me some floppy hats)

Eh, better than many of his collections, but not really working for me. I dig that he is going for that late seventies look, but it seems a tad too literal, doesn't it? Where's the modern take? Seems like he lifted those clothes right out of the seventies. I do love the Rhoda scarves, though.
I can't wait 'til you put up Zac Posen's line--there are some serious WTF? moments in that one!

On the whole, it worked for me. BUT, I can't help but think that if a PR contestant sent some of those looks down the runway he or she would have been lambasted by the Duchess herself. Really now...was that a lilac leisure suit?

Anonymous said...

I did a double-take on that orange print bathing suit with orange straw hat: it reminded me A LOT of that orange print dress that Mychael Knight sent down the runway in his final collection....

All in all very wearable looking clothing.

Much better than his Fall 2007 collection. I love his classic, chic, and luxurious but sensible aesthetic. Perfect for everyday wear!

I should add that, for all his razzing of Uli and her relaxed, colorful Miami Beach vibe, he certainly ripped a few pages out of her play book...

Just sayin'

I'm not crazy about the big floppy hats, but I really like most of the outfits. Great job, Duchess!

OMG, I LOVE the purple silk crepe gown and duster. In fact, I liked almost everything in this collection. The only exception was the YSL-like black off the shoulder dress.

I love all the color.
I love the big hats.
I even love the black/white muumuu.
I don't like that fluffy purple/green monstrosity, or the orange one that is similar to it. :-(

LOVE LOVE LOVE this collection! I wish I could afford some of these dresses.

Anonymous said...

eh
I like some of the stuff. its very 70's scissor sisters though.
not that i mind I like it but.... the long dresses look a little plain Jane prom.
hmm. the stripped long dress though LOVE would we3ar in a hart beat.
I think i may just go and try to make it as a matter of a fact...
to the fabric store I go.

A collection that could only have been done by the Duchess. Ha, that striped picture hat needs its own ZIP code. What IS the Hamptons' ZIP code anyway?

It's a lovely collection with one...uh...but.That's a cheeky statement being made by the green shorts...
Was there not a PR designer castigated for making her model parade along with her touchas showing?

Also - could not click on all the fashions - it takes about a minute to download - too long to see each one close up . Only have this problem with this site...

Hope you and the princess kitty are enjoying your new home.

You called it perfectly. Well-executed, lovely, colorful. Very livable clothing, really. Maybe though he should hire Uli, because he cannot work a print like she can.

I never knew you could throw up and yawn at the same time.

There's one that looks like it was cut by Mychael Knight, not Kors. But mostly it's just boring, with pukey '70's colors. I agree, if he saw some of this stuff on PR he'd quip them to death.

It's a hit and miss for me. Some of the stuff was gorgeous and some was just eh. I do disagree about the lavender. I thought the lavender pieces were perfect with all the sherbet colors he had in there. Michael Kors' one big "problem" for me is that he's trying to appeal to too broad an audience. He wants to put 20 year olds in the same clothes as 70 year olds. And there were several outfits that you could actually visualize his mother wearing over the years, from the 70's to now. Almost like he raided her closet and attic for inspiration. For the most part though, I liked it. Of course, I'm probably more in his target -over 40- audience.

Not just one...many and not just Micheal Knight, Uli, Laura, Santino, Daniel V and Jeffery. Nice collection of all 3 seasons is my opinion.

Scale them down and you have high end toilet paper cozies.

some of those outfits make the models look like their hips are HUGE. I know that can't be the case, though, right?

Overall, I like Michael Kors, but this collection is a little too rich-white-lady-in-her-40s for me.

I quite like the stripey number with the hilariously impractical hat, the long sleeves, and the teeny-tiny shorts.

But I want to see more on those background boys in silver!

Anonymous said...

Cute!

And the clothes are, too.

It's a very Endless Summer vibe, isn't it?

Hang-ten!

I love color and how it makes any girl look refreshed and vibrant. I usually don't his clothes, but this collection is really beautiful.

spring 2008? it's barely even fall 2007. why do designers do that? by spring time won't this collection seem old and done?

Brandenburg3rd said...

Lotsa pieces I'd love to wear, if I had the money.

Michael, you look SO much better without the orange glow. Question for those in the know (ahem, TLo): did MK display this day-glo orange OFF the PR stage? Could be it be that there was a lighting issue? I know several times what the designer was working on and what I saw on the stage didn't quite mesh.

The pastel colors makes me want a bowl of rainbow sherbet. Still like the dresses, but I have to go raid the fridge, now.

I love the colors, the shapes, the simple elegance. I've bought MK in the past and I get compliments every time I wear any of the pieces.

I love love love this collection. I would wear ALMOST everything....except that green strip thing.

Beautiful collection! The hat? Not so much, but that's just me, I don't like hats.

I meant the hatS...

I love the sherbet colors, so perfect for spring/summer.

He can say what he wants about attracting a younger buyer, but there are very few things there that anyone under 25 or 26 is going to wear.

He certainly gets, um, inspired by the contestants on PR...

PS:

What is beyond a vagina hat?

Here's what Michael Kors said about his collection on style.com:

"We were looking at some fabulous advertising from the late seventies and early eighties for Virginia Slims and Charlie," said Michael Kors before his show. "There was something about those women; they were very sexy, but sporty at the same time."

I personally love the collection.

Anonymous said...

OMG, this stuff is freakin' hot!

Anonymous said...

Please, please let this mean the end of empire waistlines! Those only look good on the rail-thin or the pregnant!

Come come, designers: I have a waist that I'm very proud of, and it isn't directly underneath my rack.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

I think a lot of it is really, really cute. But if it's hot enough for big, floppy sun hats and bikini bottoms. . . isn't it a little too hot for long sleeved sweaters. . .especially turtlenecks!? But they do look great.

Anonymous said...

Yawn. Those hats look like something Vida or Noxeema from 'To Wong Foo' would wear. As for the outfits, I could probably get something similar looking for a lot cheaper. I never like Michael's spring looks but I love his fall collections with the exception of last years "flashdance" look. There's got to be something wrong if you can get a bad review from style.com! They praise just about everything, even the waste of runway space that is Heatherette.

I love the colors too! Love the tangerine and salmon dress.

BigAssBelle said...

brandenburg3rd . . . the duchess always glows. he is a little less fiercely orange in this photo; i suspect the lighting.

his color palette ranges from flat out (osu ~ go cowboys!!) orange to gentle melon to salmon, coral and peach. at his most intense the lad is a deep shade of bittersweet. perhaps it's his autumn look.

and so the only questions remains: spray on?

do tell, duchess, darling. j'adore!

I'd ditch the hats and handbags, and lime green and orange remind me of my all too distant teen years. But I covet that long purple silk dress and coat. LOVED it.

Anonymous said...

Tim Gunn just told me that horizontal stripes aren't good for anyone!
i love the strapless green dress towards the end of the video, and the colors were all mostly great.

Anonymous said...

I like the tangerine and salmon one, but you're right about the prints. And was it just me or did the bathing suits look like what someone once called "big stuffin' briefs"?

Anonymous said...

I loev all the bright colors. It's so much fun!
