Seeya, Kevin!

We don't get this one at all. In another collection, this look might have worked, except there's so many problems with it that we're stuck scratching our heads and trying to figure it out. The biggest mystery of course, is what the hell he was thinking producing such a tailored piece when the designers had all agreed to less constructed pieces.
We kinda like the overall design and some of the elements - the colors, the quilted bodice, the somewhat extreme tailoring - but it just doesn't seem to come together somehow. It seems pretty clear that Kevin simply couldn't handle being both a team leader and a designer at the same time.
There just seems to be all this weird and unnecessary frippery, like the goofy stuff he did with the sleeves...
...And that mega-goofy collar thing which just sticks out at a weird angle. We can't tell if that was a deliberate design element or just a construction issue. And what's with that extra flap of quilting on the top? And that skirt is fitted terribly.
All in all, Kevin's something of a mystery to us. We can see that he has talent but it was always hard to find things we liked about his work. Sometimes designers get aufed because they just don't have what it takes to be a designer and sometimes they get aufed because they just don't have what it takes to survive in a reality television competition. We suspect Kevin is an instance of the latter.

I liked this outfit a lot, but I agree that it didn't fit into the collection. Also, Kevin sucks as a leader.
Maybe the weird flappy things were Kevin's attempt at deconstruction, and he just didn't take it far enough.
It seems unfair to make one person do all the same design work as everyone else, plus handle all the leadership work. Especially since he was chosen at random and not because he asked for it.
I agree T&L, Kevin seemed like one of those people who just couldn't handle the pressure of being on tv. I bet he makes nice clothes when no one is watching.
I hate group challenges. Other than Vanessa, I can't think of a single one in three seasons where the auf-ee was NOT a team leader. Forcing leadership on Kevin just didn't seem fair.
I have to agree with Laura S on this whole issue. Kevin did not want to be team leader. He did nothing to qualify him for the job. He was at a total disadvantage from the minute he was selected, and what do you know, he got eliminated.
If he had done all of the stuff Wendy whined about him not doing (i.e., corralling all the designers) he would not have had time do do a look of his own.
That being said, the whole group all agreed on a deconstructed look, and his was the least deconstructed. It really didn't look like he even attempted it like our darling Austin.
As for the dress itself, I hate the collar and the sleeves, but I like the simplistic feel of it. The quilted bodice is one of my favorite aspects of the look.
I "get it", in that it looks like something for a futuristic collection inspired by The Jetsons. But that was not what THIS collection was about.
I was never very fond of Kevin as I don't like man that sound like a whimp. I'm not talking about sensitive, sweet men... I'm talking about wussies. And Kevien have that wussiness about him. He seems to have that "I'm too weak to confront you but I'll fuck you up behind your back" look, kwim?
The garment wasn't ugly, but stood like a sore thumb agaisnt the others... Also, he made a service uniform, so did Kara, and her looks so much more creative and fitting in the group than his...
I did check his MySpace once, and I saw some very nice things... I think he *can* do beautiful clothes, and he's actually doing very well with his career...
Also, if I'm noy mistaken, he kept the contact with that Sarah Hudson girl and designs all her clothes (to her band, Ultraviolet).
that flappy thing at the neck reminds me of a zipper installation and i was never good at sewing in zippers.
i liked the quilted top, but the rest was pretty oooogly. the fit was horrible and i'm not a fan of belled sleeves and especially those belled sleeves.
as to kevin. i was never even lukewarm on the boy. i'm glad his career's doing well ~ good for him. just never found much to like there.
now . . . will it post or will it not :-)
i didn't hate it either (did hate wendy's - loved what Ann Slowey said - I am sure you guys will get to that soon) but he had to go. I agree it didn't fit with the other pieces and Kara led the team more than he did. Kev is v. creepy
CP
It's a little crass of me, but I must say that your screen capture there makes Kevin suddenly undeniably hot. No attraction to him while he was on the show, but looking at that picture all I can think about is jumping his bones.
Weird challenge, weird designs. Kevin was a lousy leader, so he should have been auf'd!

He was a lousy leader. Kara Saun did more for this challenge than he did.
I'm sorry, but I never liked Kevin or his designs. I'm not sorry to see him go.
Outfit: Not so much!
Kevin: good riddance!!
Martinique: PRICELESS!!! The bitch is FABULOUS!!!!
Kevin just wasn't good TV. I do think he's talented and has produced some interesting pieces.
Is it true that Kevin Johnn works now for Parsons with Tim Gunn?
I liked Kevin. His designs were consistently good. It was really unfair to kick him off after making him be a team leader. If leadership was such a big factor, everybody should have been made a team leader at some point.
I agree with anonymous ^^.
Kevin's garmet really wasn't part of the deconstructed theme, but it also kind of sucked for him that he had to be judged on that extra level that no one else was.
I really liked Kevin's work and was sad when he was booted.
I hated the idea that all the outfits had the logo, especially in this case.
I thought the skirt/bottom was too short. Martinique has incredible legs, but that's just too short.
I don't like Kevin, he gives me the creeps.
I bet all those buttons had his name on them.
"...And that mega-goofy collar thing which just sticks out at a weird angle."
I never noticed that. It looks unfinished.
"It's a little crass of me, but I must say that your screen capture there makes Kevin suddenly undeniably hot. No attraction to him while he was on the show, but looking at that picture all I can think about is jumping his bones."
I think Kevin's ugly-hot, and more of the hot than ugly.
Kevin's technical skills and designs are good and he has a lot of experience, but when you put him next to Kara and Jay, he's a bit out of his league. Kevin doesn't seem to work as well with others, and has a serious lack of management skills. Well, he elected to eliminate Nora, now it was his turn.
I agree, he did not choose to be the leader, but if you want to be a successful designer you must have leadership skills.
if you want to be a successful designer you must have leadership skills.
He probably does have leadership skills. In this case he was forced to lead everyone he was competing against in addition to producing an outfit. The team challenges aren't exactly real world situations.
He was weird, passive-aggressive and awkward. His clothes never impressed me. His "leadership" was barely visible. I was glad to see him go.
I actually really liked the outfit (though Martinique may have had something to do with that; that walk could sell anything), and it was certainly better looking and a better fit with the collection than Wendy's hot mess.
However, I wasn't sad at all to see leering, passive-agressive Kevin go. Wendy's drama is vital to the show, whereas Kevin could have left many episodes ago without anyone noticing.
I really liked this outfit, especially the sleeves. Martinique looked very sexy.
I hated this challenge more than any others out of all three seasons. I did not like the idea of having all of the designers work together.
The moment Kevin was chosen as team leader, it was obvious that he was going to be the one auf'd. Had one of the others (with the exception of Kara Saun) been chosen as the leader, that person probably would have been gone instead.
However, Kevin is a complete doormat and would have probably been gone soon anyway.
It was way past time for kevin to be gone.
