Bravo has Jillian's exit interview up and it's a bit of a jaw-dropper. Delicious, delicious designer bitchery, darlings.

We feel like we're the big brothers sticking up for our baby sister, but Jillian didn't strike us as this, shall we say, blunt about her aufing. We're gonna chalk this one up to the fact that the interview took place right after the elimination and emotions were pretty high.

Good for Spunky Jillian, sticking up for herself and saying what many were thinking, anyway, like me, although I'll grant you I have no idea what Alexander McQueen has been doing lately and can you say run-on sentence?

I thought she should have won. But I've said that elsewhere.

who knew the ice princess had such inner fire?maybe if she would have shown some emotion, let alone expression,on the show people would have had more intense feelings for her.she didn't like posh spice as the guest judge because posh was all about christian.too bad they didn't ask ralph lauren to be the guest judge.then maybe frosty could have been the winner.sorry but sour grapes are soo out of fashion jillian

Getting a clear view of what is in front of you is vital for success in design - fashion or otherwise. Her vision is clouded by her own backstory and skewed expectations - she EXPECTED sabotage!......give it a rest and move on to be another tag in another dress in another store. That's where clothes are sold. Clothes for "the people" as you say.

Anonymous said...

Jillian's collection wasn't my favorite - that being said, she makes a good point about Posh being a questionable choice as a judge (she's a celebrity not a designer), and I can't say that I blame her for feeling like she got "shafted".

That being said, although she seemed disappointed, I don't think anything she said was out of line and I do agree with her: she makes wearable sports wear and I think she'll go far.

Bill said...

Love my girl, Jillian. And I think she's right about her future success.

harleyd said...

A little unexpected coming from Jillian, but every word is true. I think Posh was WAY too influential because she IS the only person who would wear Christian's clothes. Don't get me wrong, he's talented, but black, black, black, black, black. Talk about boring.

I definately like her more for speaking the truth. I saw her being in the finals early on, but didn't have her winning. She's a great designer, but some of the touches people liked (i.e. the cutouts and the pointy shoulders), I hated.

Jen said...

While I agree that Posh is more of a celebrity than a designer, remember when they had Parker Posey judge the finals? What was that about? She looked like a total nutjob with her ginormous hair and oversized sunglasses.

La Nina said...

With the exception of Fern Mallis (sp?), all of the finale guest judges have been celebrities without a professional background in fashion. While I do often question Posh's "taste level," I thought she held her own as a judge as well or better than Parker Posey and Debra Messing.

the dogs' mother said...

She has valid points.

Anonymous said...

She wasn't really mean on a personal level--
she had only nice things to say about PPS as a person. Jillian didn't like the process and tear down, most of us wouldn't either!!

I think she may have felt that it was set up by having Miss Beckham there--
just because someone's clothes aren't your style doesn't mean that they aren't good design.

99.999999% of the world can't wear what Christian made, that doesn't mean it isn't beautiful or interesting. Far more of the world (including me) CAN wear what Jillian made. I look forward to seeing her clothes in stores so I can buy them.

For the final judging bring Fern Mallis or another longtime designer back!

veruca salt said...

You know what? I don't demand that the person designing my clothes be an outrageous personality. I don't demand that celebutants are seen wearing their clothes. I just demand that they design clothes that I love to wear and be seen wearing. Jillian fits the bill. And I, for one, WILL be looking for her line.

Gotta agree about her comments on Posh, which also go for all the other final judges with the exception of Fern Mallis. If Victoria Beckham and I ever wore the same clothes, you can be pretty sure my body has been invaded by an alien.

Lilithcat said...

Well, she's absolutely right. The designers should not be judged on whether or not some celebrity with no taste* would wear their clothes. Bring back Fern Mallis!

*Orange shoes with an orange dress? Can you say "matchy-matchy"?

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Whoa, Jillian, don't hold back, baby.

I would have chosen her collection for the win, and I agree with some of what she said. But her interview is that of someone still young and very much of her generation, who sees everything in entirely competitive, either/or terms. She doesn't get it yet that what matters isn't that she sells MORE than Christian, but simply that she follows her path and does everything she can to realize her goals. But she's smart, talented, and focused, and I think she'll do well and will gain some perspective as time goes on.

Anonymous said...

"... and that person is Victoria Beckham."

HA! I love this interview. She had me laughing out loud. I think she made a good case for herself, without coming across as malicious or bitter.

Anonymous said...

I think she's got a great point about Posh, and she says something similar (albeit in a more diplomatic, less strung out) way on the Bravo blog: That Posh looked at judging from the p.o.v. of what she'd shop for, not in terms of design intention.

I think Posh did just fine, but I did prefer Fern Mallis. She just has a wider p.o.v. and is able to appreciate multiple approaches and evaluate them on their own terms. (Also think DVF is marvelous this way. And for that matter, Jay McCarroll.)

I'm hoping in Season 5 they'll bring Fern back to judge at least once during the season.

All that said, I can't wait to buy a Jillian Lewis sweater/jacket/skirt or whatever.

WHOA!

Talk about a reality TV celebrity deathmatch double bill:

Jillian vs. Posh
&
Tim vs. Victorya

Good lord kittens, we've got more drama AFTER the show than on it!

I guess they have to keep the fans entertained through to Season 5!

Anonymous said...

I agree that she will mature. Usually she holds herself in such reserve that we don't see how young she is--and she is only 26!

Gidget Bananas said...

I thought Jillian was going to win based on the wearability factor (the knits, the knits!) -- but then, I, and everyone else I know IRL, wears clothing lightyears away from the clothing Posh wears. So Christian won on kind of an alien wearability factor. I mean I loved that ruffled coat, but I know I'm not going to see anything similar on the other ladies picking up 50 lb. bags of kitty litter at Costco.

But I've said it before and I'll say it again -- the losers of Project Runway seem to do better than the winners. With her determination I bet Jillian's going to get exactly what she wants.

Ms Sangrail said...

Good for Jillian.

She doesn't strike me as being particularly bitter, and I too think she made a great point about having a celebrity as a guest judge, especially someone like Posh Spice who crosses the line into fashion-victim-dom fairly regularly.

Please bring back Fern Mallis, Bravo!

I have a feeling that Jillian will indeed have a more successful career in the long run.

Gorgeous Things said...

Though she brings up some valid points, I think you're right - much of that was heat of the moment. She was much more sanguine about it at tje party. And she was the first (after Tim) to congratulate Christian.

Magnolia said...

Didn't Laura make similar comments in regards to being the one who would have the best business plan?

As for Posh Spice being the judge... All judges come in with a point of view, and the guest judge only makes up one-fourth of the decision.

She had one gold dress that I thought looked out of place and not very pretty, but other than that, I just loved her collection. I still think she deserved to win.

Keep your chin up girl...TLo thinks ya should have won!

Ben said...

We need to remember that Posh wasn't the only judge here! Michael, Nina and Heidi made the decision with her - there's no way Christian could have won without the support of at least two of the other judges.

So yes, Posh was more enamored with Christian due to her own style, but this "bias" isn't what decided the winner.

PS You should all check out Blogging Project Runway, because Victorya has a bitchy response to Tim's comments about her.

Anonymous said...

No. Body. Puts. Baby. In. The. Corner. Bitches.

She's right on many a count: Posh is a has-been fashionista with questionable taste, and Christian is wildly talented and very derivative. But none of that is unfair.

The reason she feels sandbagged is that the judges in prior seasons, have emphasized wearability and saleability. So she produces a fashion forward, unique-looking line of utterly wearable clothes, saleable to a realtively large demographic and she doesn't win in favor of an artiste whose vision isn't yet his own. Understandable.

Anonymous said...

I think you have to wonder how much Posh counted in the "judging" at all. It seems clear to me that the producers had decided from the beginning of the season that Christian would win and probably told that "in consultation" to the judges.

Having said that, Christian has mad skillz so it wasn't as if it was an outrageous decision.

Anonymous said...

What a total BEE-YATCH! Sour grapes Jillian, sour grapes. Even if she feels Christian shouldn't have won (even though he should have because he had the most cohesive collection), I don' t know how she figures that she had a better collection than Rami, because she didn't. This interview confirms everything I thought about Jillian throughout the season: stuck-up, snotty, entitled, backstabbing, whiny, sore loser!

Anonymous said...

Interesting perspective. I think she might have won if someone like Fern Mallis, who doesn't go to Fashion Week to shop for herself, was the judge.

I didn't appreciate until I saw the show that Posh was shopping, not judging. PR needs to screen out the shoppers as future judges.

Rainwood said...

Good for Jillian. She spoke her mind and what she said was true. We admire candor in Tim so I don't see why people would get their clothes in a knot when a contestant is equally candid. She probably will be the most successful of S4 because she is designing stuff that people will buy, not what Posh Spice will wear for free, and she seems to have a business plan that she's ready to execute. I'd invest money in her long before anyone else from this season.

And I wouldn't want my clothes to be judged by someone wearing that hideous orange outfit either. It was mother of the bride (of Frankenstein).

Anonymous said...

Love you, Jillian!!
I know, of anyone, your clothes are the ones I would buy!
Good luck!

Holy Guano, Batman!

That's some world class bitchery ya dish out there VictorYa. Ouch!

Wow...kind of sour grapes for Jillian. I sort of liked her during the season, but this definitely makes me question her attitude.

Has she not watched the previous seasons? It's been a celebrity (non designer) guest judge 2 of the 3 times...clearly she had to think it would be a celebrity judge again. She's only pissing and moaning because the guest judge wasn't someone who appreciated her aesthetic of military coats and sweaters.

PR is trying to find the next big fashion designer....not the next big mass designer for Target....fashion doesn't always have to be for the "masses"....fashion is different things to different people.

So get over it Jillian..you didn't win....Christian did...move.on...and quit your bitchin.

Anonymous said...

Well, good for JIllian!

I admire a person who will stand up and speak their own truth, good for you girl!

I for one will be on the watch for Jillian's beautiful coats.

Sewing Siren said...

I agree with her. She is right. Rainwood I agree with you, but hasten to add that Jillian's opinion and candor cannot hurt, Posh, Heidi, or even Christian, but Tim's opinion and candor very much can hurt Victorya and Ricky. Also Jillian's interview most likely took place right after the judging when she was very hurt and disappointed. Where as Tim had the luxury of time to reflect.

veruca salt said...

I am perfectly OK with Christian winning, which is a refreshing change from the past two seasons. The only winner in PR history, however, that I would plunk down cold hard cash to buy their designs is Jay. Other than him, a "losing" designer has always been the one of whom I would actually purchase their clothes. Like Laura and now Jillian.

veruca salt said...

And, no, I don't shop at Target. For clothes anyway.

Anonymous said...

TLo, who is that person who keeps "sour-graping" Jillian? Just shut him/her/them up.

The girl had many solid points, but she missed one: Posh IS a designer!!! DVB, anyone? Or is it BVD, or 2xST, or WhtVS?

I know I see a lot of that stuff on NYC streets.

Anyway, can't wait for Jillian's line, and hope she does some menswear as well.

NahnCee said...

I could see Laura Bennett wearing Christian's designs. And she's not a size 0, either. Just because he made them in a Posh-size doesn't mean there aren't lots of women who wouldn't love to wear them.

Of course, you might be a little over-dressed if you were to wear a puffy-sleeved confection to the supermarket to pick out tomato's, but hey -- I bet the tomato's would be impressed!

I did like Jillian's collection. A lot. And I think she'll be successful. But if I was going to use the word "immature" on any o the three designers, I think it would have to be applied to Jillian. She had a more limited world view than either Rami or Christian - which is not to say that she won't be able to expand and catch up very very quickly.

I wonder if it's the difference between Edith Head who was very very good at what she did, and Hubert de Givency, who was beyond fabulous. I wonder what Audrey Hepburn would have thought of Christian's feather dress.

Anonymous said...

Awesome! Every word she said is true. And she still wasn't nearly as bitchy or malicious or mean as Christian has been from day one. You go girl.

Her collection was young, fresh, innovative and original. Oh yeah, and it was wearable, too. I don't think it takes a genius to predict that she's going to be phenomenally successful. Let's check back in five years, shall we, and see who's been more successful. My money's on Jillian.

And Posh Spice is ridiculous. Showing up in an orange dress with matching orange sandals should have been enough to disqualify her as a judge right there.

Anonymous said...

She's just upset. I still find it grotesque that her face doesn't move, and her monotone voive makes me want to vomit. She knows that others did better than her, so she's taking it out on the judge that she knows least about.

Mom said...

Well, she may have had valid points she wanted to make, but I still think that Chris's post-aufing interviews should be required reading/viewing for all other designers. Don't burn those bridges, people! Not even the ones traversed by pop tarts dressed in orange!

Anonymous said...

I can't imagine that the judges who have been with this thing from the beginning (and have a business interest in the show) would allow someone to come in at the end and skew the results in a crzy way, counter to their thinking. Besides, everyone loved it when the "celebrity" designer judge saved Chris.

Anonymous said...

I like Jillian. (I like the others too.) She's very talented and I like her aesthetic and if I had the money and the body I'd buy a lot of her clothes.

I also think she's right about her future success. If she were a stock, I'd invest in her over any of the others.

As far as sour grapes, can you imagine what Christian would have said if he lost? Would you really hold that against someone? If you have that kind of talent and put that much blood sweat and tears into something and you really believed you were the best (which perhaps they each did) then it's going to hurt to lose, and you are going to disagree with the judges' decision. And Victoria Beckham is joke for a judge, and I can imagine it is a lot harder to take a "you lose" from someone like her than from someone whose judgment you respect.

Mom said...

And just back from reading the VictorYA "rebuttal" and, holy crap, talk about burning bridges! And unless there's more to the response than was displayed, there was no rebuttal, no setting the record straight on alleged factual inaccuracies. Just a whole lotta whining and mind-boggling insults flung Tim's way. Wow. Hope that gets her PR Alumna status revoked.

And I have to respond to Anon 2:57. You're right that a guest judge probably saved Chris (and there was much rejoicing). But there's a big difference between a Cavalli and a Beckham. Major, one might say.

Anonymous said...

Understandable frustration.

Posh gushed over Christian's clothes. but she's one of four judges.

Rami's color story was off, and Christiian just produced fantastic look after fantastic look. It was the drama and the show he created.

Jay's clothes were more of a fantasy collection as well.

Christian wanted to do more couture-esque runway show. He had every right to do so, and he produced killer looks. That's why he won. I don't think many people would buy those clothes, but how many people buy haute couture designs?

veruca salt said...

"Ben said...

Just read it. Interestingly, she does not factually dispute what Tim says, rather she questions his taste, integrity and bonafides. Apparantly, Tim is a media Svengali that has charmed the unsuspecting masses into believing he knows his shit. We've all been bamboozled! Whose for pitchforks and torches??

Anonymous said...

I believe the operative word in that sentence is "designer," not "celebrity." It makes a difference.

bitchesdye said...

I think she's just telling it like it is, from her perspective. And there were plenty of posters here and elsewhere that saw it coming. Most of us who liked her collection best were resigned that Christian would win anyway.

This season really has seemed the most like a foregone conclusion. I knew Christian would win as soon as they auf'd Kevin. I mean, really, Christian FAILED in every way on the prom challenge, and the judges and Tim just couldn't see it.

He's definitely talented, but I predict that being a Christian supporter will be somewhat like having once had a mullet (or cockatoo hair) or having voted for Nixon. At some point, people will start denying they fell for it.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Jillian! Posh was not really a good judge. She had only one criteria, would I wear that. Once she latched onto Christian, it was game, set match. Would I wear that is relevant, but only as part of an overall critique, and really, only if you are part of the real world, and not Victoria Beckham. But then, most of what comes down the runway during Fashion Week is out of most people's wearable league.

So, Jillian may not consider Posh a "real" designer, but a celebrity..

How about Roberto Cavalli?
He thought Chris and Christian were the artistes in the group, and that Jillian and Rami were okay- he offered to hire Jillian; he didn't say "you could show at Paris" like he did for the other two..

I don't think a "real designer" would have changed the outcome much. And the extent to which celebrities like Posh like your clothes and want to wear them will help increase your visibility. True, Christian's win doesn't say anything about who will be more successful selling their lines in the future, but people define success differently anyway...

Sour grapes. Hope she learns from the experience, and good luck to her in the future.

Suzanne said...

She also looks completley exhausted.
I agree with EVERTHING she said 200%....but I still believed Christian will be a great American designer. That said, if I had my choice of any of these 3 people to dress me, my money goes to Jillian.
As for PPS Rami said it best- he needs to learn to dress WOMEN not Models.

She might not have a big mouth, but girlfriend is from NY. Silent but DEADLY.

I also cannot agree enough about Posh pice. Tell me what makes her an aothority on fashion? So she has a lot of money to pay great stylists, BFD.
Give me Fern Mallis every single year, hands down. Even SJP had the good sense to realize that Pat Field made her a fashion icon.
Its almost as incongruous as Paula Abdul judging and critiquing vocalists on American Idol.

Anonymous said...

Does it actually surprise anyone that Jillian's exit interview would be about whining and complaining and bitching?

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't pay for Jillian's clothes, not one item in her collection. Did you see that gold mini dress thing?!.....god awful. And the only item from Christians collection that I would purchase was the short cocktail dress in chocolate and cream...with the belted waist....amazing.

I think it's all a matter of what she does with herself now...if she goes the route of Emmett and Laura she could be very successful...lots of women seem to want that military inspired coat...so maybe that's her niche...as a coat designer.

Rainwood said...

Sewing Siren, good point. Tim's candor can hurt a lot more than the contestants' comments ever will. Maybe that's why I like it better when he takes the high road.

Key word there being designer. Cavalli was looking at the garments from a design perspective, not a shopping bag perspective.

I've got to write again to agree with other posters on bringing back Fern Mallis, or DvF or another well-established designer, for finals judging. Are you listening, Bravo? Well, ARE YOU????

Anonymous said...

You can't blame the girl for defending herself. Did Posh really said she wouldn't wear anything from Jillian's collection? That's harsh.

I'll just second what many have said here--Bravo needs to find someone who isn't shopping or looking for free clothes.

Anonymous said...

That was great. I mean it. She is not doing sour grapes at all when you compare to all the exit interviews of the real losers. She is right about Posh Spice - you should have had a real designer, not someone with one-note aspirations who is so obviously weighted towards Christian. And she is very on target about the critique about a scarf when so much of Christian's work was limited and influenced by his last job... but in the end, all I can say it was a dour project runway season and only this last set of shows brought it together. I'm no longer excited about the next one, it's just going to be there as an option, not THE event.

Lilithcat said...

I almost feel sorry for Christian. I read that he has an appointment with Beckham and actually thinks she is going to buy his clothes! As Carl Sandburg would say, "poor little innocent child".

You'd think someone who "worked with" Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood would know better. I wonder when the last time was that Beckham ever actually paid for anything.

For the record, "designer" judges this season included:

Episode 4: Donna Karan;
winner: Jillian

Episode 5: Patrick Robinson; winner: Christian

Episode 6: Zac Posen;
winner: Rami

Episode 8: Alberta Ferretti; winner: Christian

Episode 11: Roberto Cavalli; winner: Christian

HIGHLY doubt the outcome would have changed had a "designer" judge been chosen.

To me, it was apples and oranges. Jillian designed ready-to-wear, and Christian erred on the side of avant-garde. I would certainly wear a ready-to-wear version of his stuff in a heartbeat, but his stuff is clearly suited to someone a bit younger and more dramatic, will Jillian's is for ANYONE.

Anonymous said...

Dear Jillian,

1) You know that funky stacked occasionally also asymetrical bob that is so hot right now that you see chicas chopping off their locks to emulate it? The one my stylist told me she gets requests for at least five times a day? Do you know who is responsible for kicking off that trend? Victoria Beckham. Whether you dug her orange dress or not, she is a....listen closely....trendsetter. If she wants to wear Christian's stuff that is, to use a Posh word, pretty damn major, from a marketing and branding standpoint.

2) Do you know what I dislike more than you hate orange? Well, you know that skirt that you favor so much in your collection and body of work? Tight to mid hip and then ruffly? That. It's not cute or flirty, its juvenile and dated.

3) Your work is just as Lauren derivative as Christian's is McQueen. Come on. And if were going to be compared to anyone, I'd pick McQueen over Lauren anyday and twice on Sundays.

4) The best piece in your collection, the funky sleeved striped sweater, looked incongruous with the rest of your stuff. That doesn't scream winner to me.

I think you need a breaky-break.

I agree with Jillian about Posh Spice judging. She had no business being there in that capacity. Most celebrities with fashion lines do it as a vanity project. They have no training and no skills. They slap their names on a garment and expect it to sell. I've said it here before that only real fashion people should judge the final collections. If they were smart, they would have Fern Mallis judge the final collections every year. She's THE fashion insider who is completely impartial. Save the celebrities for the weekly challenges.
That being said, I do understand Jillian's frustration, but some of the things she said were just sour grapes that she's probably wishing she could take back right about now. I guess you can catch more flies with honey, but more blog posts with bitchery!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, what Tiffany said.

Nothing in Jillian's collection took my breath away. Nothing.

At the beginning of this season after the first episode I was like "Jillian is the one that I'm going to hate this season." She just struck me as annoying, yet bland. Throughout the season I began to warm to her, but after watching the exit interviews, I remember why I really didn't like her. GO CHRISTIAN!!!!!

Rainwood said...

Tiffany raised an interesting point using Posh's hairstyle as proof she is a trendsetter. That cut is quite popular and probably part of that reason is because of her. But unlike the clothes she wears, that haircut can look good on lots of different women with lots of different body types and unlike the clothes she wears doesn't cost a fortune. Plus, it's a darn nice hairstyle and was when Vidal Sassoon introduced it in the 60's.

BTW, Posh Spice may well be considered a trend setter by some on this side of the pond, but in the UK she's worshiped by CHAVs as their goddess and style icon.

My 7 year old daughter started a trend in her school of wearing her socks inside out. I don't think that qualifies her to judge a fashion show.

Anonymous said...

Ummm, I don't think Victoria Beckham created her haircut anymore than she creates her clothes.

To me, there's a huge taste issue with Posh. She has some of the worst fake boobs east of Tori Spelling. If she can't tell how bad they are, she lacks a strong aesthetic sense.

I think it's funny Jillian went straight for the jugular. She has a point--Posh did judge by whether she'd wear something. Contrast her to Sarah Jessica Parker. SJP's comments were really thoughtful about the clothes.

Or Heidi, for that matter--Heidi uses her wearer-of-clothes status to notice thing about fit and wearability.

Posh's judgment was narcissistic--and I think that's a legit issue to criticize. It would have been fine in an earlier dress-Posh challenge--but not for the finals. So I hope the producers keep it in mind.

Christian's show was good, but so very, very narrow in scope. Laura Bennett came in third for the same kind of issue.

I agree, though, that Jillian will be fine. That chick is seriously driven and she's got the flair. I don't see Lauren all over--though what does that mean anyway? RL's so totally into co-opting bits of Americana that his stuff is always sort of a redo of something earlier. (Currently, the Jazz Age, the New Mexico cowboy/Indian thing before that, then some preppy stuff. Okay, Ralph has never done it for me.)

Jillian likes a fitted bodice, natural waist, fullness at the hips and some totally quirky detailing. Not thematic, but actually quite consistent--there's a pretty consistent customer there who's being dressed.

Wow, love the bitchy VictorYA reply. Makes me believe everything Tim said about her. No self-awareness whatsoever. Tim trained as a sculptor, so, yes, he would have something to say about design. But, more to the point, his criticisms of her weren't of her as a designer, but of her behavior toward others on the show.

If she's like that in her professional life, her talent's not going to matter. She just won't be worth the personal difficulty to most people. (Particularly since she pushes at people in authority as well as underlings.)

Thank god Jillian finally spoke up for herself. Every outfit she showed made wish I was a socialite with cash to burn. If she strikes a deal for a bridge line featured in say, Macy's, then I would be a happy shopper. Her knits are just the thing this Seattle girl needs.

Oh come on! It's not like she pissed on the Alamo! She questioned Tim's ability as a mentor (which was probably foolish). But, you know Christain never followed his advice , nor did Jeffery and they both won.

Well, Posh may not wear the style you like, but at least she generally looks better than Debra Messing. When they had her as the judge a couple of years ago I really was bumfuzzled. I have seen her in some godawful outfits. Plus, when it comes to the bottome line, the other judges can easily overrule the guest if they so desire. Fashion on PR is not about wearability, y'know!

Let's face it-the celebrity judge doesn't call the tune, even if they're a respected designer.

If Roberto Cavalli's opinion, for example, were all that mattered, Sissybear would have been in the final 3.

I love Jillian's sweet, measured voice, those billows of curls and tiny figure. That said, her final collection did not have the zip that the online trio had - no wonder she won that! I can understand her disappointment and hope she gets over the "I'm going to sell more than him" attitude, relaxes and creates to her heart's content.

Maybe if she had shown this much attitude throughout the show, the producers would have picked her to win from the start rather than picking Christian right off the bat. Hey, he made for amazing ratings.

This finale was so frustrating.

One judge does not the season finale winner make. Jillian can whine all she wants about VB but the other judges liked what Christian did and for good reason.

Furthermore, celebs have been finale judges before so this isn't a first. And VB is notoriously associated with fashion. This whine-fest is just so lacking in class. Where is Chris March when you need him? Perhaps he could mentor Jillian when she wakes up from her nap.

Having recently moved to the US from the UK, I was DISTRAUGHT when Her Poshness decided to follow me here.

That woman has worse than questionable taste - she has unlimited access to the best stylists and designers in the world and still manages to look like a hot mess the majority of the time.

Although she has improved a little of late (obviously using better stylists), when she was in the UK she spent most of her time dressed as an anorexic hooker (Google Victoria Beckham World Cup and look at the images to see what I mean).

Her reinvention as some sort style icon is a triumph of hype over expectation and I'm sad that the US has fallen for it. And agree with every word Jillian had to say about her.

What on earth do people see in Victoria Beckham? She has lots of money and a public relations flack to be sure she is in the public eye all the time.

I wonder about that '60's hair style she has. Didn't Twiggy wear that 40 years ago?

And did you not see that orange dress?

Why are people pretending she is some kind of fashion arbiter?

Jillian is absolutely right. The decision was skewed at the end toward the celebrity judge's taste.

Anonymous said...

You know what, I agree with everything she said! And sure, Vicky Beckham has her own line, but that doesn't make her a designer. That's like saying Beyonce is a designer, or Jennifer Lopez is a designer.

Anonymous said...

I'm of mixed mind on this.

On the one hand, there is a definite sense of sour grapes here, and the arrogance that we saw during the home interviews. I while I can't say that I cared for Posh's outfit, the other judges clearly respect her knowledge so I don't think having her be a final judge was that unreasonable.

On the other hand, I can understand the frustration. As someone pointed out, years past have been about finding ready-to-wear. They changed what they looked for, leaving her hosed.

But then again, why can't the judges change their mind? Chloe is happy running a small shop, others are selling on QVC. Maybe now that the show is seen as such a platform it wants to add some gravitas by promoting someone who can do more than ready-to-wear, in which case Christian does fit the bill.

In the end, it still does put her into a bit of a bad light, and I hope that people don't look negatively on her for it.

Personal story time, y'all! Jillian's interview brought back some memories. You can get to the point in the last paragraphs, or join me on Memory Lane near the intersection of Career Change Avenue.

Picture it: a college town, not too long ago. A nervous BG was in one of his first design critiques (and one of his last, as it turns out). He watched everyone else's critiques and got more and more excited and confident about his own. Almost everything the reviewers said was lacking in other people's work, he had in his. They wanted to see zig, he had it! Zag? Covered. Zoom? He thought of it yesterday, diagrammed it, and could see it pinned up on the wall for his presentation.

When it was his turn, it felt like he dumped a cold, dead fish onto the table. The criticism started slowly and ramped up. Fast. Forget the zig, zag and zoom. More complicated, detailed and flowing criticisms came. Lots of (mostly minor) choices were called into question and his major design moves were glossed over.

He hid it, but he was crushed. He did so many things right - his project had so much of what the reviewers said they were looking for from others, it worked on a technical level and yet he got nothing but negative feedback.

A few friends helped him realize what happened. BG did a GREAT job. It may not have been perfect, but his project was thought-provoking. It was clearly presented. There was a lot of work, thought and care in his design. The end result was reviewers, thinking on their feet and speculating about what they would have done differently, where he might have gone with the project, what more work could have done. Not a word of praise.

Jillian's account of what happened in the judging reminded me of that critique.

Christian's collection was like fireworks; big, showy, stunning, exciting. Easy to love as a whole, a bold statement. No one complains about individual fireworks, they respond to the dazzle.

But like my wee project, I bet Jillian's collection gave the judges more to look at, more to analyze more to wish for and ultimately more to question and criticize.

Kinda agree that Posh was not the best choice for the final guest judge.

But please, it does not matter who the judge was; Christian's collection was out of this world. I don't think any other designer could have beaten him (only Jay McCarroll's collection, hypothetically speaking). I loved Christian's every single piece, no clunkers.

Jillian your collection was fabulous, but I did see two clunkers, same with Rami's (and I liked the colors he used, well, I am color blind).

I'm fully aware that a precision cut bob is a Vidal trademark. I wasn't crediting Posh for the creation of her hairstyle, because that would be pretty remarkable, doing that cut yourself. Point is, long subtle layers were everywhere, VB shows up with her short bob, and we have a wave of Posh 'dos. The media has dubbed it the Posh bob. That is an example of a way in which she's been a trendsetter. If someone who has been emulated in a ripple effect kind of way to that degree wants to wear your clothes more than someone else's clothes, that speaks to the intangible quality that makes you ripe to be the next big thing in fashion. One day you're in....and all that. Christian has that quality and that instinct, and it's just as valid a prognosticator of success as the so called "real women" people keep referencing who supposedly want to buy Jillian's stuff. Two different types of marketability. (Last I checked, I'm a real woman, and I don't care for her pieces, minus the chunky sleeved sweater which I could maybe see myself wearing with that one pair of Christian's black pants with the zippers on the side and bright hued stilettos, or if it was a bit longer with some funky leggings and boots.... But to each his own. It's just fashion.)

Re: Lauren....When you think equestrian influenced sportswear, you think Lauren. Half of Jillian's show had a very equestrian vibe (the half that looked like a cohesive collection) to about the same degree that Christian's show had an avant garde McQueen kind of vibe. If she wants to call Christian out with the he's too McQueen thing that I was tired of two weeks ago, well, people in glass houses.....

I'm sure she'll be successful. I'm also sure that I'll not be all that interested in her line, and that Christian deserved the win.

I guess she was just disappointed that she didn't win. In my opinion, she does have a point about Posh.

Here's what she said on Bravotv.com:

"What did you think of Victoria Beckham as guest judge?
I was excited. She is high profile to have as a judge on the show. I did worry that having a celebrity/non-designer as a judge, she wouldn't be able to judge objectively ... that she would judge by shopping. That was in fact, how she judged, which was disappointing. I was also a little thrown off that she has her own fashion line?"

"What did you think of Christian and Rami’s collections?
I was really proud to be showing my work along side these guys. They really are excellent, fabulous designers."

Anonymous said...

I'm sure she'll be successful. I'm also sure that I'll not be all that interested in her line, and that Christian deserved the win.

Well, I am interested in her clothes because I'm not a size -1 or someone who can afford haute-couture. Yes, he deserved to win but what he'll do with it is what matters. I'm sure we'll be here in a year or so talking about his success or failure.

Anonymous said...

I'm hot/cold on her collection, but I agree with her assessment 100%. And I can't believe Heidi had the huevos to accuse her of copying a Balenciaga scarf when the judges gave Christian nothing but praise for his McQueen rip-offs. I suppose it shouldn't have come as a surprise-- they did, after all, rake Rami over the coals all season for being one note (and deservedly so) but fawned over Christian's incredibly one note collection. The double standards on this show are patently absurd.

Anonymous said...

I wanted Christian to win because he made me laugh, even though I though Rami's collection was the best. However, out of all the collections, I would wear Jillian's clothes. She has the most marketable approach, and her sweaters were to die for. Her biggest problem, I think, was cohesion in her collection. But I think in the real world, such a variety isn't a bad thing. I do hope Jillian is able to open up her own label and do fabulous things!

And this exit speech made me love her more. She wasn't a complete bitch (she said how Christian was really a nice guy), but she was understandably angry. Posh does not have the best fashion sense in the world, and having her judge was a bit ridiculous. If it had been anyone else, the results probably would have been different.

Anonymous said...

And I should add, hopefully his success. I sincerely wish him the best.

"velma kelly said...I can't believe Heidi had the huevos to accuse her of copying a Balenciaga scarf when the judges gave Christian nothing but praise for his McQueen rip-offs. "

My dear, Heidi knows NOTHING about fashion. She confirmed that in every single episode/challenge by opening her mouth and saying something really off or wearing something my cat wouldn't pee on.

I can't fault Jillian for any of her comments. Putting myself in her place, I, too, would have been upset to learn the Posh would be the 4th judge. (Yes, there are 4 judges but who wants to enter a competition believing 1 judge's vote has already been cast?) And I don't get the animosity that her comments have invoked. Rami, and, especially, Christian often praised their own work and looked down upon the competition. Please don't tell me she's being held to a different standard.

Bottom line: all 3 are very talented and should do quite well in the years ahead. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing them move forward.

Lastly, Posh is NOT too heavy for Christian's designs. Rumor has it that she looked a little less svelte for the finale because she feasted on a tic-tac prior to being seated.

Jillian needs to stop acting so conceited and putting up excuses. Go back to your "play pen" Baby!!!

Hee, that has to be the most monotone rant ever. Say what you want about Princess, but had he lost, his sour grape bitchfest would have been a lot more animated.

Anyway, the way I see it, we had three strong collections from three strong designers with very different aesthetics and very different target clientele. It came down to who pulled together the best show...little things like the flow of the pieces one after the other as they came down the runway, the power of the statement they made as a whole, the music, model selection. I had placed Jillian third, and third is where she placed with the judges. I'm good with that. Does anyone reeeeally think Victoria Beckham could have swayed the other judges if it was three to one? I don't. Nina alone could eat Posh for breakfast. And Rami placed second, so how could Posh's tastes have impacted Jillian's outcome anyway? If it wasn't Christian it would have been Rami crowned the winner. The lack of cohesion, lack of showmanship, and no definitive point of view obviously cost her the win, period. I wish Jillian the best of luck, it's always nice to see a woman succeed in business, but I have to say, I hope she's wrong about Christian and he's wildly successful as well.

I totally agree with everything Jillian said. I don't think she was just flying off the handle because she had just been eliminated; I believe her remarks were well thought out and for the most part accurate. The equestrian look predates Ralph Lauren by a few hundred years. Just another example of his co-opting sportswear--something that's gone on with designing for men for a couple of hundred years.

I found Christian's collection really, really narrow--it felt like four looks instead of 12. Given that he made the same dark narrow pant, puffy sleeve look multiple times over the series, I really don't know why Rami took so much heat for draping while Christian took none for his repetition.

I think Christian will be capable of a great collection, but this one wasn't it--I, too, saw McQueen and the 80s in a way that was far more specifically derivative than the use of the equestrian coat. (Though Jillian's stuff looked more military than equestrian. Equestrian pinks have deep Vs and a notched collar--I don't recall that specific look, just the fitted jacket shape, but I'd have to doublecheck.

"I know I'm not going to see anything similar on the other ladies picking up 50 lb. bags of kitty litter at Costco."

Christian wants haute couture. He doesn't want his clothes showing up in Costco.

And where the trendsetter thing comes in is this -- Christian does several more of those collections, Posh wears his clothes, and some huge investor like LVMH comes along and licenses the Sintiriano name for their share of the 7 billion dollar a year perfume market.

That's the power of trendsetting.

My goodness, you artiste loves, didn't anyone here pay attention in fashion merchandising class?

I'm kind of dismayed about what some people are saying about Jillian. Personally, I felt that she presented an exquisite, well crafted, hip, fresh, creative, vibrant, feminine line of clothing for the runway show. Christian's clothes looked professional and had that element of drama and otherworldness that seems to flouris and only exist on the catwalk.

I'm sad that people are quick to think Jillian is a Beeyatch or a sour grape. First off, what's wrong with being a bit bitter if you genuinely do feel slighted? Secondly, I think Christian comes across as more lovable, fun, and outrageous that people automatically don't call him out as being a beeyatch. But, here Jillian speaks her mind and people say bad things about her. Jillian was very classy the way she handled herself during the season. She was hardworking and appeared as though she was a decent human being. She's truly passionate about fashion, it shows. In these interviews she's speaking as someone with that kind of passion and as someone who was in the contest 24/7 (not the edited for tv version).

I think PR tends to favor designers who have a strong, "edgy" asthetic. With the exception of Chloe, I think the other two winners had that quality that Christian has--that "it" dramatic, "wow" factor. They're clothing don't really exist in the regular clothing world, the clothing exude "fashion". (I hope this makes sense)I thought Chloe's collection was terrific...but the other designers (weaker) collections made the Chloe as the
winner choice much easier.

Anyway, I think Jillian is most definitely entitled to her say and should not be judged negatively. After all that superb work and her outstanding line, I don't think the judges really paid attention or justifiably critiqued or acknowledged her final showing. She's a real talent. Her passion and certitude of her talent seems to undercut the anxiety and stress that came with the challenges. Part of me really beleives Christian was also chosen because of his younger age and for his personality.

BRAVO Jillian! No pun intended!! I think that the choice of Victoria Beckham as a judge was wrong on so many levels! anon@3:09, I was just thinking the same thing. If Posh had been praising Jillian's collection instead, you know she would have been all, oh VB has great taste! I can't believe that Jillian thinks that the GUEST JUDGE is what killed her chance of winning. She still placed third! It's not like VB had that much influence. She's still one of four judges, and I would bet good money that her opinion isn't weighed as heavily as those of the Big 3. Even Ralph Lauren himself wouldn't have been able to save her.

In my opinion, it wouldn't have mattered much if the guest judge was a fashion designer. VB thinks a lot like fashion designers in the way she's always trying to be ahead of the style curve and isn't afraid to take chances in the name of fashion. A ton of fashion designers would have loved Christian's dramatic, European-flavored collection over Jillian's incongruent, equestrian-inspired borefest.

LOL okay. As much as Posh is not the best judge of fashion and that she should've gotten second, I do think this is rather silly. If Christian's collection was McQueen knockoffs then her's was DEFINATELY Lauren knockoffs. And if she got third place, there had to have been more than one of the four who didn't like the collection. And whoever said that Posh didn't say all bad things, they are correct. Selective hearing at it's best.
Jillian, hun, I understand you being let down, but get over yourself. Laura put out a better collection than you did last year (and lost to a crappy collection) and you don't see her doing this. Christian won and it was deserved, you didn't.

As much as some previous posts have complained about how boring PR4 has been, I think it was much more enjoyable to watch than PR3. Less drama - more sewing!

Love TLo - and all the folks who post too!

Personally, as a viewer I was insulted with the choice of Posh as a judge. I thought with some of the judges they managed in seasons 3 and 4 that this finale would have someone of note. Not just someone notorious.

What aired on TV is the edited version. Perhaps that one semi-positive comment from Posh was the only one she gave Jillian and my guess is she went on Ad nauseam about that redundant and bland collection of Christian's - your miles may vary - but it was not edgy and not innovative - just beautifully constructed.

In the end the winner had already been chosen - so I don't think Posh made a difference in that sense. Just her being there confirmed the way the wind was blowing. That Jillian failed to see this - well I guess she was clinging to a small wisp of hope.

The interviews are conducted right after contestants are let go in the hope that they will let their guard down - so I don't think what she had to say was all that nasty or off base.

If Christian had lost - well...... can imagine it would not have been pretty. His blog comments all season have been - shall we say - not so nice.

Good for her!!!! She should have been second place or even first.

GO, JILLIAN! I was totally happy for Christian but also felt Jillian was completley robbed for 2nd place!
Obviously she feels she should have won and, why not, that's the whole point of being in the competition! I agree with her 100% that Victoria Beckham as the FINAL guest judge WAS a joke for all the points she laid out. What makes HER an authority on Fashio...other than her well-paid publicist! Bravo needs to straighten its act out on that front if they want the show to continue to have true credibility going forward. When you watch a Top Chef finale they don't bring in....Kirstie Alley as a celebrity judge to award the big prize, they chose someone who's a professional icon in that field. Cavalli, Calvin Klein, Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Gaultier...any of these people in my opinion would have had more authority to be the fianle guest judge. And who know, the result might still have been the same...it just would have been less assailable.

Laura put out a better collection than you did last year (and lost to a crappy collection) and you don't see her doing this.

Laura also came in 3rd so she didn't just lose to Jeffrey, she lost to Uli. Whatever you think of Jeffrey's collection - Uli's was just stunning.
And as a matter of fact Laura has continually put down Jeffrey in the press - most recently in Parent's magazine (over a year later!!)

I'm with Anonymous 4:05. The Top Chef comparison is a good one. Use the fashion heavy-hitters for the final judging. Use Posh for a dressing Posh challenge earlier. She would have been good for that.

I mean Hung was never my favorite TC contestant, but it was really clear to me why he won and why it was fair. Also, the judges, for the finale, pushed him out of his box. I think I'd feel a bit differently about Christian' win if he'd been challenged about using the same non-colors and silhouette the entire season. Other designers (Rami, Chris, Elisa) were pretty much ordered to work outside their comfort zones, but Christian got a free pass.

Then at the end, Christian was basically rewarded for having a point-of-view when having a strong POV was essentially slammed in Rami and Chris.

Whatcha talking bout, Willis?

Last year, the 3 finalists were Laura, Michael, and the Angry Peanut. Uli was eliminated before fashion week and her show was the red herring.

Michael was the first eliminated in the final, and Laura finished second.

Don't make me remember the Peanut winning it. Talk about your travesties...

ITA about Victoria Beckham. How that fashion victim and worst-dressed-list dweller is considered an appropriate guest judge is beyond me.

Hey, can I have a toke of whatever it is you're smoking ;))
Last season was the first year that 4 contestants COMPETED at Bryant Park. Remember Michael and Jeffrey being ecstatic on stage when they were both chosen instead on one of them being aufed? Then in the finals -Michael was out first then Laura (3rd) which left Uli and Jeffrey on stage for the final decision. Don't you remember them hugging each other as they awaited their fate?

Jillian had the more realistic collection..

I'm sure she regrets saying a lot of that stuff now that she realizes that they plucked the few controversial statements from what was a probably a much longer, more rounded interview, but on the other hand, that was awesome. Determined. If we're gonna get these videos, it's better that they be raw and true and in the moment rather than just a bunch of senseless, cautious "aww shucks I'm happy for everyone" deals.

Also right about Heidi too, I always thought she never had an original thought and was simply echoing what the others said -- this is why you always hear from her last, isn't it?

Looking again at Rami's collection I'd say Jillian baby you're so right.

I , too, am surprised at Jillian, but I'm sure I would have also been bitter if I had just lost such a major competition. I think people are forgetting that (while she isn't really MY taste), Victoria Beckham is seen as a style/fashion icon and she actually DOES have her own fashion line. And Posh was not the ONLY judge in the room! I'm glad Christian won. Jillian's clothes are more accessable, but I think Project Runway is more about high fashion. Rami's clothes were too heavy and overworked. To quote Tim, "that's a lot of look!" Jillian will still be successful, but there's a reason why Christian won.

Celebrity clients -- like Victoria Beckham -- are extremely important to designers. Remember Season Two's Nicky Hilton challenge? Regardless of what we think of them or their taste level, celebrities, socialites, etc. matter hugely in the fashion world. One red carpet dress can make a designer's career. Let's suppose that the guest judges are selected not only for television purposes, but also so that the designers can hear another point of view in the critique. The celebrity point of view -- Would I wear that? Would I support this designer? -- is valid and important in the finale judging.

That said, I don't expect the debate about Posh's credibility as a guest judge to end. Bravo wants us to talk about this, they want someone to stir up more interest in the show -- both from loyal viewers and to attract new viewers. Can you blame them?

Talk about sour grapes! Christian's collection looked like Paris Couture, hers, while full of beautiful clothes, wasn't cohesive at all.

Instead of focusing on Christian's unworthiness, she should have been more rightfully angry at Golden Boy Rami, whose collection contained some serious fug and at best, two or three really great dresses (and no, the black one isn't one of them).

I think she should have been first runner-up, not second. But her collection didn't look like a collection, so she lost.

Live with it, girl.

Posh Spice as a finale judge? Who cares if she "designs" her own line? She's just a skeleton with bolt-on implants. The only worse judge choice that I can think of was Sandra Bernhardt. They must have been desperate to get a judge that week and all the workers at McDonald's said no, so they drug out Sarah.
