The Rest of the Rest

And the retro train keeps rolling along. Funny how each designer seemed to pick a decade. Alexandra: 1930s, Austin: 1950s, Wendy: 1960s and now Vanessa: 1940s.

We'll give her credit for at least updating a 1940s look instead of simply redoing it outright. We don't really like this dress, though. First off, it doesn't look particularly well-executed and secondly that neckline is a bit much. Nothing wrong with a plunging neckline but it's not something you'd see at Banana Republic and besides, all you need is a slight breeze to get her arrested on an indecent exposure charge.

That hemline does look a little interesting, but unfortunately we can't get a good enough look at it to judge either way.

Oy. Did she skin a muppet to get that thing?

This is a walking disaster. It's to his credit that he knew it. There's nothing more painful than an oblivious designer beaming proudly as their latest hot mess comes strolling down the runway.

We almost feel like there's no point in critiquing this since the episode made it clear that this wasn't so much a design as it was whatever was left over on the dress form after he spent too long experimenting. Although this dress was damned right from the starting point just because of his fabric choices. Faux leopard and ice blue charmeuse? Yikes.

We were never really on the Robert-is-a-hottie bandwagon, but y'know? Stress looks good on him. When he's not mugging for the cameras or acting like a doofus, he's downright do-able.

Robert's was insane... lol. And the dead muppet didn't help...

i guess he needed anything he can get to cover the rust smudge (when he was ironing it)on the dress.

ROFL. That dress is so wrong on so many levels.

Vanessa's plunging neckline reminded me of Vincent's "backwards" dress.

Robert is kinda a hottie, but he's a little too stoopid for my tastes. I like when he speaks Russian, tho. (I know we haven't gotten to that epi yet, but now you can look for it and not miss it the first 30 times you watch.)

Robert Plotkin....I'd do 'im! Sure he's dumb as a board, but who cares? LOL

Robert was the first in a long line of contestants who lucked out because there was always somebody worse. He had a couple of pretty decent things going in the work room, then took the worst of each and created this walking vomit. And I never got Robert-as-hottie either. He's proof that "dork" is universal.

I never got Robbio until I saw him in person. He's so much hotter that I nearly didn't recognize him when I saw him. His skin is surprisingly beautiful and his smile is out and out dazzling. He oozes charm from his pores.

Doofus. Ha ha ha. Tee hee.

Robert....one word: RAOW!!!

You know.. before I watched S1 I never got ROb's hottie crap either..

But now I absolutely love him. Yes, he's dumb as a doorknob and loves to play his charms...but, you know, he's the sweetest guy, and that's what turns me on most about him.

Not once I saw him being rude to anybody. He seems like a genuinely sweet guy...

And, yes, this dress is (as we say in Brazil) 'o.. "Ó"!'

I'm getting the idea that the "plunging neckline" is not exactly an easy move to pull off. I dunno if it presents possible design or execution snafus or both in spades, but Vincent and Vanessa showed that it is an element best left to a 1st class artisan. Yes, LAURA, that means you!

Thanks PRGs and Commentarians!

Yes, he's a himbo. And adorably charming.

Robbio, sweet dumb Robbio. But in the world of reality tv his sweetness and general good spirits are refreshing.

I see all these garments with the super plunging neckline and I just have to say I never think there's any chance that I could pull it off. It's a fine line to walk, you either get the super bony sternum (love you Laura, but the bony bony sternum doesn't do it for me) or boobies making a break for the freedom land. I don't think I can "make it work"

Robert is more of a tailor then a designer, in my eyes. As with envy challenge, he can /usually/ make an outfit fit fairly well.

But gosh, he is easy on the eyes, either way.

Robert is HOT, now his designs, not so much.

I hated Robert's outfit. It looked horrible. The dead muppet...FUGLY!
I never liked Vanessa's.

I have to agree that these outfits looked way too retro. Nothing innovative about them.

I love Robert. He's hot, sweet, and very friendly.

I went to a bar in NY and Robert was there and he is hot.

I actually like Vanessa's dress, but I also think that the super plunging neckline was a bit too much.

I agree with Emily: I would have liked to have seen the front and back reversed on Vanessa's dress (I know that wouldn't really help). Seriously, how did she think that neckline would work at Banana Republic?

Anonymous said...

Robert would make the most adorable pool-boy...or even a "manny"...

Hell, he doesn't even have to work, just sit around and look hot.

Though the Justin Timberlake-cornrow thing has got to go.

As far as the dress, the concept (or lack thereof) isn't even as bad as the horrendous matching of that blue fabric with leopard and fur.

If success in fashion requires charm, confidence, and talent, Robert should take comfort in knowing that he's 2/3 of the way there!

you can just see Robert desperately b-sing on these pictures. The thing is the judges just went for it. He is cute tho' - in a dumb as a plank kind of way

But ice blue charmeuse looks beautiful on Josianne.

Plotkin's dress: god-awful mess. There appeared to be an overabundance of ice blue charmeuse at BR that day. Bleech.

Plotkin: not so much.

I'm all about dark hair/eyes. Dumb as a rock, but with that smile/bod, who cares? I'd hit it. Repeatedly.

I am now going to brand myself as a person with no taste. Not only do I not think Robb is particularly hot (I just can't get over the dumb, although he does seem like a sweet enough guy), I actually kinda almost liked his dress. Not the muppet fur, but wasn't that wrap (along with the brooch securing it) a last-minute attempt to cover up a rust stain? But sans off-kilter faux fur, I liked the color combo of ice blue and leopard print. Polar expedition meets safari -- isn't that how Tim put it? Anyway, it wasn't Banana Republic, not by a long shot, but I thought the combination was intriguing. And I agree that the ice-blue looked fabulous on the model.

I will now cower under the bed and hope that the fashion police don't find me...

Aw, geez, I don't even think he's that dumb; he's just young. Younger than his years. So many of these designers are so young; when I was that age I wasn't cutely clumsy and coltish; I was just a raging dork. And far from ready to attempt a career on TV.

I know I'm not supposed to like the mix of baby blue fabric and leopard, but I do. Do I have bad taste?
