Nina: Aesthetically Pleasing

What do we love about NEENAGAHCEEAAfashiondirectorofellemagazine?
Only everything.

Here is a woman who, week in and week out, sits next to another woman who is generally considered one of the most beautiful in the world and damn, the bitch holds her own. She always looks totally put together in that carefully haphazard way that good fashionistas master. She's always got a killer set of heels on and big clunky jewelry that she somehow manages to make look elegant.

And the hair! What is it about Latin women and hair? They treat their hair like it was a second set of tits on top of their head. Something to adorn, draw attention to, play with, and drive the men crazy. You can tell Nina loves her hair. She should. It's gorgeous. Just tame enough to be considered professional-looking and just wild enough to make people wonder what she looks like naked.

We love how seriously she takes fashion. Good fashion makes her almost orgasmic, but bad fashion actually offends her. When someone sends something particularly heinous down the runway, Nina acts like they just called her mother a puta or something. There are times when she looks like she's ready to leap out of her chair, rip the garment off the model and stomp up and down on it. As physically imposing as Santino is, if it ever came down to a cage match between those two, we'd have to bet on the little Colombian spitfire.

She gets a lot of crap for being a bitch, but that's just a classic example of "bitch" being defined as "smart woman with an opinion." She knows her shit and she's there to judge. There's no point in being demure about it.

On our way to Emmett's last week, we talked about whether or not we'd embarrass ourselves in front of Tim and reaffirmed to ourselves that we'd just play it cool (we see how well that plan held up). PRTotallyHeterosexualLittleSister laughed at us but then admitted "Ohmigod, if Nina's there I may lose it. LOVE HER." And that's the thing. Nina is for straight women what Tim is for gay men: someone who's totally got her shit together, is well-respected, and fabulous to boot.

That isn't to say that the gays don't love her too. In our daydreams, Nina greets us the same way she did Iman. "Welcome to the Elle closet!" *airkisses* Oh honey, that's one closet we'd happily walk into.

Now, when people ask us how they look , we slowly and diplomatically say "There iSS SSomething to be deSSired in the execution," or "You really thought about it." If someone we don't like asks us how they look, we shout "IT'S NOT AESTHETICALLY PLEASING!"

Actually, we don't wait for people to ask us how they look.

cha'know its funny she does nothing for me. The hair is just okay for me and all that gesticulating -its like being at one of my family's weddings without the alcohol. Although when she and Santino would get into it I was sure she was going to have him knifed on the way back to the Atlas.

So true. You don't have to look like Barbie to look gorgeous, and she does look fabulous.

Classic! I don't know how you guys do it!

Nina's got to be sitting in a meeting right now wondering "Why do I feel so warm and cuddly all of a sudden? Like I'm in a lovely embrace!"

I LOVE her. She's got class, style, grace, sense of humor, oh yeah, and fabulous shoes.

I've worked for Nina. She's really fabulous. She is also widely respected in the fashion industry as one of the friendliest and most professional directors in the business.

I adore Ninagarcia! I want to be Ninagarcia!

Hey, have you guys seen the new edition of Elle? I want to slap whoever is responsible for Nazri's hair in the Tresemme ad. She looks like she just had a wash 'n' set at the Pretty Girl salon!

I really love the occasional facial expression they show during the runway presentation.

The face she made when Jeffrey's model threw feathers in one of the first challenges still sticks with me. It was a combination of "Ohnoyoudidn't" and "I wish I could shoot razor blades from my eyes"

"Nina is for straight women what Tim is for gay men: someone who's totally got her shit together, is well-respected, and fabulous to boot."

A! Men! You are just sososo right. I love NINAGARCIA.

On another subject, I sort of love it that all the naysayers who post here insist on being anonymous. Like you two fabulous guys and other commenters don't have anything better to do than track their sorry asses down and chastise them. Please.

I really think it's extensions, I hate to break it to you guys. That is why she ALWAYS has that shorter hair on the top- for 3 years, never another length or style.

Anonymous said...

Straight woman here who is not awed by Nina, sorry, she bugs me. I also don't click with Madame Malandrino. They just don't have a lot of heart and they seem too cultivated.. I'm surprised you compared NINAGARCIA to Tim, since he has tons of heart and everything about him is so natural and true, KWIM, yet stately and elegant. I love him even tho he thinks a size 6 is a plus size.

I do adore the lovely and talented Laura Bennett and for comparison let me add my favorite woman in current media is AnnaNicole, I just love that big sloppy heart.

Lastly sorry to remain an Anon, but really I'm no one, just a housewife from middle America.

Well said.

And since Aimee feels it necessary to criticize a fellow commentor, I'm certain her post will be deleted post haste.

Or provide an e-mail where she can be reached.

I just love saying her name: NeeNa GarrrCeeYa. Sort of alliterative, almost rhyming, it rolls off the tongue.

And I LOVE her hair too. My boyf is (stereotype alert!) a hair stylist and he raves about it every week. If it was a weave, he'd spot it.

K

Anonymous said...

You really can't spot a very expensive weave. I mean Heidi has extensions, they all do! This is why Nina always has it loose and forward- the extensions are underneath- you can't tell.

Anonymous said...

I'm also not awed by NINAGARCIA and her hair, but I do respect her knowledge and as Tim put it "editorial" eye for fashion, and I agree that, especially in this case, bitch stands for "smart woman with an opinion". You guys, on the other hand, I totally adore! I weep from laughing - and you're usually right on the money, saying things that everyone is thinking, but no one can say better than you! What are you going to do when the season is over? How will I go on without my daily dose of Project Rungay?

My favorite Nina expression came after the exchange between MK and Vincent in the jettsetter challenge. MK talked about how this was a design competition and there needed to be a twist, and Vincent uttered the immortal: "I am the twist."

Nina's expression--a combination of amusement and disbelief--is classic.

Nina is fab, no doubt. But I must say that it is indeed what LAURA is to straight women that TIM is to gay men.

I must agree with TODDNY on the line "treat their hair like it was a second set of tits on top of their head." Bingo.

Anonymous said...

"And to anonymous poster K, try this one...EEss-a-bella RRRo-sell-EE-ni. I giggle every time is rolls off the tongue. I'll start a conversation about her just to say it!"

Another good one! Then there's Isabelle Huppert: IzzaBelllle Ooh-Pearrrrrrr.....

So many American names are McBlah. C'mon, Tim Gunn? :)

Words cannot express how completely and utterly fabulous I think neenagahcia is. I can't decide whether I want to be her or sleep with her. Maybe something in between?

As for the hair, I LOVE it. I love the color, the length, even the fly aways. (And, FWIW, it seems as though she plays with it/tosses it constantly. That could be the reason why it looks so messy.)

Anonymous said...

I'm with redheadgirl. The equivalent of Tim for us straight women is Laura, not Nina.

I'm brazilian and Nina does 0 for me either. I mean, she can be amusing on occasion, specially when she get all orgasmic looking when talking about about Michael Knight, but that's about it.

Laura on the other hand is just what a little girl (and some big girls) wants to be when she grows up!

But I agree on the bitch comment. Right on!

katiecoo said...

I'm a straight woman and Tim Gunn is who I want to be when I grow up. Is that wrong?

Ps. I'm scared shitless to ever meet you boys in person now. Aw hell, I'll just get a T shirt made that says "aesthetically not pleasing" and be done with it up front. So to speak.

Roni said...

What I love about Nina is that she calls 'em as she sees 'em...No Wait! We get to visualize her actually getting ready to call 'em as she sees 'em with her wonderful facial reflections.

Katie,

I want to wear the shirt when you're finished with it!

I look up more to Laura than to Nina. Maybe it's because us lily white redheads need to stick together!

Something about the way she moves...

Seriously, I started noticing her at the end of last season. I turned to my roomate and said "I just realized I have a crush on Nina!"

Her voice, her smile, her everything ... LOL She's not what I'd usually notice, but that makes her more dangerous. She's the one I'd fall in love with.

She's just smoldering...HOT

I loved both Nina and Catherine Maladrino(the Lovely designer who drove Vincent to drool all over the Boat on Siene River in Paris...I can't ever watch that clip again ewwwww) Nina and Catherine M are very similar in "being",stature, cultivation,
confidence. Both women are very attractive, beautiful in their own way, smart, elegant, they like being who they are. Which is what I like. They don't want to be Heidi Klum, or one of the models on the runway.... Both have a elegance about them, that is good to see, because all Hollywood shows is 18 to 29 yr olds usually. Nina and Catherine M are mature ,accomplished women. I like that.

Lisette said...

I wrote the first Anon. quote and it didn't start out anonymous so I'm not sure what happened. I agree with the smart=Bitch part, that, unfortunately is just the world we live in. I don't dislike Nina, but she is not what I aspire to, Laura on the other hand is precisely what I aspire to - a real Dame! I'm just not girly enough to be Nina. 'Course I get asked out by women even when I'm with my husband so go figure.

The Scarlett said...

Wait ... you guys have labels now for your posts? Dang!

Loved this. Anyone that doesn't love Nina is suspect in my book.

i'd rather see PATSY STONE sitting in one of the judges chairs. talk about hair? attitude? i can it now ... patsy would be slouching next to king kors, puffing on a fag and (boozily)lusting for jeffrey.
who ever dreamt up that goddess of a fictitious fashionata knew about style. or every laughable (and bigger than life)idiocincracy about it.
in reality, nina in her own fabulosity is direct and succinct in her assesment of the stuff that struts the runway.

Anonymous said...

Obviously I need to clarify. Nowhere in my comment did I generalize about *all* anonymous posters. What I said was that I thought it was funny that the (very few) people who occasionally show up here and leave nastygrams, always do so anonymously. And the thing about me putting my name and not an e-mail address is just this: there's no place in the "choose an identity" options to leave one. I don't have a website or blog.

I sincerely apologize for offending the anonymous posters who responded, but I wasn't talking about YOU. You didn't leave anonymous nastygrams. You left perfectly nice comments. I hope everything's clear now.

I LOVED watching the Ninaface when Vincent argued. You can see the "WTF were you thinking?" that flits across her face. And you can tell she's squashing the impulse to roll her eyes.

I also like it when Heidi introduces the judges and the contestants respond-Michael Kors(HI MICHAEL), guest judge (Hello), Nina (inaudible mumble because they are VERRRRY afraid).

When is someone gonna grow a set and tell Heidi "Tchuss" (sorry, no umlaut on my keyboard) when they get axed?

Anonymous said...

Boys! You forgot the NUMBER 1 rule:

DON'T BORE NINA!

And the Number 2 rule:

Lingere is supposed to be sexy....

Santino getting knifed on the way back to Atlas....priceless...'cept our little Colombian Queen would have pulled a shiv out of her weave and cut his needs-a-shave-and-and-a-shower-and-a-tetnus-shot-ass right there on the runway with the cameras rolling!

Anonymous said...

I love Nina. She has an opinion, so did Ms.Catherine (the designer)She let's you know exactly where she stands. She successful, accomplished, makes no apologies. I do think if she were cornered in an alley with Vincent, she might pull a razor out,and take care of business... where as Catherine Maladrino would pull out mace and a cell phone, to call the police. Yes, I think Nina can go barrio or ghetto if pushed.

Anonymous said...

I always knew that's why I loved her. The hair. Now I treat mine its a set of ripe, heaving D cups with perfectly sun-facing nipples. A girl's gotta work with what she has, no?

You two brighten my day. XO

Latin women are so feminine. I love that.

marniecel said...

I love Nina, she's got her sheeeeeeeeeet together. She is amazing, accomplished, a bit of a DIVA yes, but that's what makes her even more likable. She's an attractive woman, accomplished, opinionated(for a reason)smart woman, which makes her a target for some. If she was ugly she wouldn't have made it through season two, as a judge for Bravo Network's show, (not aesthetically pleasing the producers would say). She works it and then some!

Anonymous said...

I thought I was the only one who cracks up everytime Heidi pronounces NEENAGAHCEEAA!

Anonymous said...

Love her! I think even Nina cracks up when Heidi says her name like that. I read an interview where they asked about it and she said yes, she thought it was funny. She always looks amused when Heidi introduces her.
I think she is totally fair and she and Tim Gunn make the show! Heidi...eh. She's all right.

Anonymous said...

i do think she's way off on a lot of trends, though. for instance her comment about katy's (???)sweater in the macy's challenge: "i can't get past the cowl neck". cowl necks are HUGE right now. (it was, however, i hidious outfit).

Ok this shit made me laugh SO hard! I'm from Portugal and I only get my PR fixes from the internet. You guys are my newest addiction. And I'm SO looking forward to telling someone they're "NOT AESTHETICALLY PLEASING!"

I think I used to not like Nina, when I first started watching the show. I can't imagine why now. LOVE HER. She is awesome.

And, PRGay boys, as a woman who's been called a bitch for doing nothing worse than being smart and having an opinion ... thank you, darlings. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

"Cowl necks are huge right now."
YOU are telling NINA GARSEEYA
what is fashionable? Where's YOUR magazine?

Nina is everything a woman could hope to be, respected im every aspect; beautiful, gracful opinionated, smart, just very charasmatic;

i have to say i love anne slowey, isabel dupree, robertia myers and joann pailey as well, all the women that work at elle are hardened versions of nina; FANSTATIC,

HOWEVER, they're magazine sucks balls.

Anonymous said...

Nina is very sexy. Is she straight/gay/married/single? Whats the deal?

Anonymous said...

nina lost a fan in me when I just read her say that a woman needs to get laser eye surgery or contacts, and stop wearing glasses, so she looks more appealing! That is outrageous!

Some of us LIKE our glasses, others can't afford it, and others can't wear contact lenses. To say a woman who wears glasses needs to stop is absolutely ignorant and degrading. She should be ashamed of herself.
