"I'm wearing an Uli Herzner UNoriginal!"

Monday, September 11, 2006 by

It's so damn hard to write posts about Uli because dammit, she never gives us material for jokes. She's so drama-free and low key that she doesn't seem like a reality show contestant at all.

Anyway, let's talk about her dress this week.

Whoops! That's not this week's dress! How ever could we have made such a mistake?

Okay, pretty. Very, very pretty. Beautiful color, beautiful detail on the bust, beautiful construction. If this had been the first Uli Herzner dress we'd ever seen, we'd be falling all over ourselves complimenting it.

Thing is, it's not the first Uli Herzner dress we've ever seen. Laura gets criticized a lot for being one-note, but there's a difference between having a narrow aesthetic and literally making the same dress over and over again. We were truly puzzled as to why the judges didn't say anything to that effect this week.

The other thing that puzzled us is why the judges didn't point out what seemed obvious to us: this dress doesn't represent or look like a couture gown. It looks like a nice red carpet dress and there's a big difference.

Maybe we're reading too much into it, but it sounded like Catherine Malandrino was hinting at just that in her comment.

"It is so easy, so light and effortless."

Ahh, catty French bitches. What's not to love?

Uli, Schätzchen, we think you're very sweet and you have certainly never thrown anything down the runway that didn't look beautifully made, but with each subsequent garment, we grow less and less impressed. On the one hand, we want you to make it to the final four to see your collection, on the other hand, we feel like we've seen your collection already.

This is, of course, personal taste, but we'll take a "Manhattan Rich Bitch" aesthetic over a "Miami Rich Bitch" one any day of the week.

So there.

OMG..that last shot! So there. Laughing my Ass Off!

I agree wholeheartedly...Uli certainly has her own style...her one, cookie cutter, various versions of the exact. same. style. Oh and allison? "you guys" and "suck" does not belong anywhere on this blog. Thunk! That's me thunking your typing fingers for posting those words. Wag. And that's me wagging my pointer finger at you after and/or before thunking. So there.

You could have also mistaken it for her "Off the Wall" dress, her "Fit for a Queen" dress, her "Whatever the Dog One was Called" dress, her "Fashion Icon" dress and her "Jetsetter dress". That leaves only the one where she was on a team and got stuck making an ugly jacket and the one for Kayne's mom which, with a little more length, would have fit right in. I want to see a challenge that forces Uli to make a pair of pants and a shirt with a collar just to see if it makes her explode. And - truly tacky here - did anyone else notice that she looked exactly the same before and after her trip to the L'Oreal Paris Makeup room and the Tresumme Hair Salon?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been all but screaming the same thing on my blog for weeks!

You're doing God's work.

That last picture is cladestine. Honestly.

Now, just Photoshop Nina's head onto Laura's and you've got my wet dream.

Hey PRGayBoys,

Just started reading your blog this season and it just makes my day (and the entire week for that matter!) LOVED the last shot of Uli and Laura; I think Uli could guest star on the reality show that Michael and Laura they so richly deserve. And of course you guys would be the scriptwriters! Keep up the good work!!

Can I just say--SO sick of the braids on EVERY dress.

Ok. See, I know that sometime before now I commented on how I would be uberticked off if Kayne got auf'd before Laura. I also feel the same about Uli.

At least Kayne's collection would be interesting.

Final line-up I'd like to see: Kayne, Michael, Jeffrey. I despise Jeffery as a person, but again, at least his clothes are intersting.

My sentiments exactly.

I meant that the PRGayBoys expressed my sentiments exactly. Not what Amy said.

It looks like I'm agreeing with Amy, because my post comes right after hers, but I'm not.

that is all.

This dress would have been lovely as her "show us a dress that represents your fashion week collection" garment. It's very pretty. I want to own it.

But don't I rememeber the judges worrying over this precise issue in the "road to the runway" episode? Something like "She makes these breezy Miami dresses. They look great in Miami. Can she do anything else?"

You guys are right on, as usual - as if I expected anything less. :-) Uli, BITTE - etwas anders! Having a signature style is great when you already have your own line but it becomes a little dull in a design competition. At least this week she'll be using black and white prints instead of those garish tropicals. I live in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area and am seriously sick of tropical prints. To her credit, Uli can mix a print like no one I've ever seen.

I will be truly disgusted if they are designing for the Olsen twins this week. Have they actually done anything since Full House went off the air? This would be as dull as the Nikki Hilton challenge from last season. Blech.

Uli really is comparable to Laura in terms of the similarities of her designs. I'd be tempted to say even more so, given the identical silhouettes, braid details, necklines, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like Uli and Laura's work, but they're getting redundant.

I just LOVED that last comment about Laura over Uli. Laura's fabulous enough to almost turn me straight... almost.

Uli... you're absolutely right. This dress wasn't any different than all the others, it was just a more sophisticated color. I'm tired of the Uli.

Great blog, guys.

Damn straight - or is it damn gay? You guys are the best! Don't take no sh*t from no one, PRGayBoys. You rock, you rule, and you tell it like it is!

What's with the "Santino" braids and Uli's dress?

I took "the Olsen Twins" comment to be metaphorical, not literal. Maybe a garment for a child or teenager?

Mee-ow... but dead on.

Hey gigi... I'm in Ft. Lauderdale too. Lovin' this blog and your comments too.

The worst thing about the braids, besides how heavyhanded they looked is that Uli admitted they were used to hide the seams. That statement really set off alarms for me, like she was making an excuse for them being there. If she could sew a flawless seam she wouldn't need to hide them, hmm? Is there a lack of confidence here?

Thinking ahead to the final 3, it's a weak group whoever ends up at Fashion Week. I can't see any of them coming up with complete runway collections. It's like the prgayboys said, we've seen it before with Uli and I would include Kayne and Laura with her.

Kayne will do a bunch of gowns, which in itself isn't a bad thing but it's like I can see them marching down the runway already, no surprise. I would truly love to see him stun everyone with a range of items with a more sophisticated point of view. Maybe day to evening looks.

Laura does nice derivative classic looks but I don't think she could wow anyone with something that looks new. She needs to go a bit Mad Hatter, but she keeps it too controlled. This weeks preview seems like a red herring to me, I think she'll have her fit, fix the lipstick and keep from getting auf'd.

I think Michael could do an interesting range of looks on the runway, but I keep feeling like he's still designing for the challenge and not for his point of view. Or maybe he hasn't found his point of view yet. But of all of them I think he's the one with the brightest future in fashion and can't wait to see how he matures.

Jeffrey to me is the unknown, he might be able to do a real collection but then he might end up giving us a train wreck. He seems like his mood dictates how well he does on the runway. He basically threw away the Average Woman challenge because from the moment he knew Angela's mother was going to be his muse he knew it was going to be a disaster. If he's not in a good space going into making a runway collection he's going to fall apart. Unless Mrs. Jeffrey keeps him in line, which I would imagine is already a full time job!

It just seems like in the first two seasons, at this point in the series I was feeling like certain ones had shown an ability to create a range of imaginative looks that were true to their styles and met the challenges.

Really love your posts today, prgayboys! I can never get work done when I come here!

So right there. So right on. Love Laura! Go Laura!

Uli's good, but one note. Laura's style is classic, and so hard to do well because every mistake shows.

I can't wait to see a Laura runway show.

I'm just a humble fan, and know very little about fashion -- but I actually thought that Uli's work was very different from past efforts. She limited her color palette, first of all -- and maybe that's the only distinction, but I noticed details (like the braids) that had perhaps been previously lost in a sea of animal/tropical prints.

I love Uli and definitely see a place for her in the final three.

Jazz said...

I LOVE YOU! YOU ARE SO RIGHT!

Watch out, guys. The judges actually complimented Uli for successfully "breaking out" of her usual pattern, i.e. colorful fabric mixes.

At this point, if we assume Michael and Jeffrey are solid bets for the Top 3 (which I believe they are), then it comes down to Uli and Laura for that 3rd spot.

Sorry, Kayne.

You guys are probably absolutely right about Uli's dresses, but I still adore her personality. It bothers me that people think of her as bland.

I adored her for her comment about Vincent's hat, and just her little bits of offhand banter with the other contestants. And that accent! It makes my insides melt.

Ya know... I have to disagree. Uli certainly does the haltertop hippy thing on more than one occasion. But looking back at the episodes, Uli has also come up with some real out-of-the-box winners. The recycling challenge? Kayne's mom? Good stuff and really original.

HI,

can someone help me to find a picture of Uli's dress from the back - I believe Episode 9. It is kind of lilac, has lace in the front and was also shown in Paris on a French model. I have seen plenty of pictures from the front which is already georgous but I die to see the back again. Thanks so much
