Judging the Judges: Monique Lhuillier Resort 2009 Collection

Tuesday, July 01, 2008 by
Fashion Week Daily gives us the skinny on Monique Lhuillier's Resort collection:

"The glamour girl continues to reign supreme for Monique Lhuillier, whose 34-look resort collection infused a safari feel this season, most evident in the liberal use of raffia on jackets and skirts. "Everything is dry this time," said the designer, alluding to the lack of the saccharine sheen her garments have enjoyed in the past. "It's safari, but not so literal." A spiffy collection it was, with intricately beaded jackets and tops, not to mention wooden button detailing, and a great gazar skirt that had precisely placed wooden studded beads atop ribbon that snaked all around. A Sabrina neckline dress that floated fabric high above the chest was also charming. Most, if not all, out of the outfits emphasized the waist. And for Lhuillier's ever-growing fan base, they'll be happy to know she didn't abandon those trademark lush gowns. This season in addition to a sweeping number with floral abstract print, she included a sportier version: A simple navy and white color block halter."

A very, very pretty collection. Really, there's not a wrong note to be found anywhere. These looks are fresh and feminine. We love that she mixed up the silhouettes so much and if you know anything else about our taste, you know we love that she used prints so effectively. This is another collection that we think a lot of women would want to wear or want to be able to wear. In the parlance, she "knows women."

Wow, she really does know women! I love the feel of this collection.

Most of it is quite pretty. Simple and chic. The one that got me was the elegant black bodice/white skirt piece that truly evokes the essence of a safari -- classic African shapes at the neck. Gorgeous!

It's a beautiful collection. I particularly like #3. I heard that those swirls are ribbon appliqués on tulle. Gorgeous!

OMG!!!! I want one of everything. Sooooooooo elegant and pretty and perfect. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Her collection makes me want to twirl and sing "I'm so pretty"

It's the kind of clothing that I imagine has some place in my life. Like yeah, I'll wear that gorgeous dress to lunch at erhm.... ugh... Polly's Pies, and that other outfit will go swell on the Metrolink, and hey... yeah, lemme just slip on this coat number while I go scrape paint off my house. And have you met my glamorous friend, Rudy the skateboarding dog?

Anyway, I love. It does what the best of fashion does. It transports me... somewhere better.

I have to say that the skirt print for red-top-black-and-white-print-skirt outfit looked vaguely ovarian to me, especially with the positioning of the ovals!

Otherwise, quite attractive, though the "safari" moniker seems quite a stretch. I know that designers feel impelled to tell a story, but I honestly think that these garments (save for the gyno skirt) speak well for themselves without the (sometimes strained) attempt to contextualize. [Yipes, that's a word for which George Carlin would rightly skin me alive.]

All the best,

NDC

Ugh. Clothes for rich women and presidential wives.

I do like it, though I usually stray away from floral prints, unless they're more "modern" (that's the best word I can use to describe it) like the print in the last dress, which I would totally wear, btw.

I mostly liked everything, except the first look. Reminded me of my grandmother's housecoat. Didn't care for the look in frames 5 and 6 at all. LOVED the dress in frames 7 and 8! The detail on the neckline was FAB!!
I really don't see much "safari", but all in all, it is a lovely collection.

Fabulous! A friend of mine in LA told me that she's a sweetheart.

The last dress is gorgeous. I really like her work, it's simple, chic, and very glamorous.

I like the fabrics she chose. Very interesting. I want to die wearing the blue gown...it's gorgeous.

I can't find a thing wrong with this collection. She makes great use of mix & match separates. And her prints are to die for.

Quite lovely! And quite wearable!

I love the red top with that skirt. Is it knit?

I love all the unexpected fabrics and techniques used. I also thought she was a great judge.

These are some of the most inspiration and gorgeous appliques I've seen. I have not tried applique but it's on my list of to do's this year.

Thanks, TLo, for this pretty pretty post. I agree with other responders that the word "safari" doesn't really seem to fit with this selection, but there were 34 looks so maybe they are elsewhere.

Love all but 5th and 10th rows - I have never loved that fan-bust. What is that called, fashionistas?

I have to agree with the anon that suggested the clothes are for Presidents' wives. Other than the stunning black and white number (on which, forgive me, I would prefer a different color skirt), it skews old to me. Extremely tasteful, but society dinner party for old money matriarchs.

Beautiful. Elegant. Wearable.
The yellow gown is incredible.

Stereotyping much?

So are you saying that rich women have no taste?
And have you seen pictures of French President's wife, Carla Bruni?

I love the two dresses with ethereal skirts, but am not sure about the jackets/coats shown with them.
Not crazy about the strapless bodices with the paper fan/napkin pleating. The look difficult to wear.

Very pretty, especially the last look.

Well, if one must be saddled with a label based on personal style, I can suffer with being "rich and presidential". That is just my cross to bear.

Sewing Siren said...

The look difficult to wear.= THEY look difficult to wear.

Rainwood said...

Very pretty, although some of the silhouettes are a bit bridesmaidy or MOB for a resort collection.

Anonymous said...

Gorgeous! Every single look!

Anonymous said...

Monique's designs, as always, are beautiful.

Anonymous said...

They are very english society on a holiday safari.

Anonymous said...

Beautiful, except for the first look which is very 70's sofa print over a 50s structured dress.

It's all fab...but that red mini. It jumps away from the bust and the hips...not to mention the pleating and matchy-matchy aspect. I can't imagine a woman wanting to look like a fat chinese lantern.

I've no idea what # 3 costs, but I want it bad.

I'd wear it walking up and down my dirt road. Wind blowing. Very romantic.

Lovely collection.

Clothes for rich women and presidential wives.

Okay, so I'm imagining that I'm a rich woman with lots of people do do things for me.

As for being a presidential wife ...only if the limo will take me shopping 24/7.

i like them, but i agree with Sewing Siren: they look difficult to wear. My first thought was that they seemed a bit heavy and stiff... aaaand i'll just leave now before i say something that would embarrass my mother.

Quite the opposite, David darling,
the rest of my post read, "I'll take it!" because as the owner of several Lhuillier designs, these are the type of clothes I would definitely buy.

TLo is right, another collection that women will want to wear--
I know that I do!
I especially like how the jackets are cut to accentuate the dresses, not cover them up.
Bravo ML!

I love love love that first look. That jacket is to die for! I think the rest of her collection is fresh and wearable. I like it as a whole but that first look is the only one I truly covet.

I like just about everything, though I wore the crumbcatchers when Scaasi did them in the 80s, so I'm pretty much done with them. But the colors are beautiful. And I love the silhouettes.

I've always been fairly indifferent to Monique Lhuillier, but found this collection stunningly beautiful and breathtaking. Love the colors. Love the silhouettes. I see a modern day Holly Golightly-type of girl in this collection.

i love the black and white swirly dress!!! it made me gasp!

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry to disagree, but I don't like much of this at all. I can't imagine it even looking well on the average woman. The blue dress was pretty, and maybe a couple of other things were red carpet looks, but on the whole not attractive.

I expect to see #5 on Susan Lucci any moment now! It is a pretty collection though.

Gail said...

I generally try to steer clear of colors and patterns, but that red top with the black and white skirt is gorgeous. I'd put that outfit on in a second!

Anonymous said...

one of each, please and don't skimp on accessories!

Though I agree the coats are sort of costumey with the full skirts.
Love her.

Anonymous said...

Oh btw, all the print chatter makes me wonder? Where in the hell is Uli? THeoretically the most marketable contestant in Season 3 and she's totally off the radar. What gives?

Anonymous said...

She understands what women really want to wear. It might not be your taste or style but it's always feminine and sexy without being Versace vulgar.

megtheexpat said...

Yikes, the jackets with the red-orange and yellow sleeveless tops would make any non-model look like a beached whale. And the model in that red-orange needs a freakin' cheeseburger.

But overall, I like everything else. I LOVE the black and white dress.

Umsy said...

I think all her clothes are simply elegeant and classy!!!

Anonymous said...

I think she hits the waist a bit off, usually too high... some of those dresses don't look as flattering as they could. The swirled dress has too long and full of a skirt to look light or young, those strapless tops and the turquoise gown don't look well-fitted, like they could be brought in more. The white and navy skirt comes too high, but most of her skirt suits and shift dresses look lovely, and the navy and floral ballgown looked classically beautiful.
