Judging the Judges: Alberta Ferretti at Cannes 2008

Friday, May 30, 2008 by
Darlings, plenty of starlets at Cannes were wearing Alberta Ferretti and none of them looked chip. Although some of the dresses were questionable.

Actress Angelina Jolie leaving the hotel to attend a day of promotions for Kung Fu Panda.

A little bit of a yawner. Granted, she's like 11 months pregnant with her 15th child and still looks beautiful, but the color's a little "meh" and the dress is a little basic. We're easily bored by goddess gowns. Still, she wears it well.

Singer Natalie Imbruglia at the Kung Fu Panda premiere.

Speaking of bored. Don't get us wrong, it's pretty and we like the color. It's just not what we would considerable notable or memorable and isn't that what you want for a red carpet dress?

Actress Rebecca Hall attends the Vicky Cristina Barcelona premiere.

Our first thought is that this is a beautiful gown but she's somehow the wrong person for it. The color's not doing her any favors and she's just not wearing it well.

Supermodel Bar Rafaeli at the Blindness premiere.

It's got some interesting details and the color looks beautiful on her. Still too goddess-y for us, but it works. Or rather, she's workin' it.

Actress Catalina Sandino Moreno attends the Che premiere.

Sorry, but the first thing we thought was that it looked like her dress had some sort of creeping infection.

Supermodel-turned-actress Devon Aoki on the red carpet for Blindness.

Very dramatic and eye-catching. Bitch is workin' it.

Actress Juliette Lewis at the Cannes opening ceremony party.

She's insane and we love her for it. Who cares about the dress?

Actress Mischa Barton at the Blindness premiere.

Beautiful color on her. The silhouette doesn't seem to be doing much for her, though.

So I'm no expert, but in many of the photos I've seen from Cannes (some of these included), the dresses seem TOO long. Angelina's green goddess dress is a good example - the dress seems like it's drooping around her feet. Like she's GOT to be stepping on the hem every time she moves. I get that fancypants premiere dresses are long and dramatic, but shouldn't they be more flowy than puddled around a girl's feet?

or maybe everyone was wearing the wrong shoes; you couldn't tell, since they were buried under the hem of the gowns.

I love Alberta Ferretti, there's nothing "chip" about her gowns. I love the one Mischa Barton wore. It's gorgeous!

You need to give her a lot more credit for the Mischa one.. Mischa usually looks like CRAP and she looks stunning in the dress. :-)

Oh I'm so glad you boys love Juliet Lewis....she's crazy-genius!

Devon Aoki for the win. I have no idea who she is but everything about the look is fantastic.

Angelina -- I agree the gown is basic, but I think that's why it works. She looks like she threw on the dress, ran a comb through her hair, and applied lip gloss -- and still manages to look absolutely gorgeous. Some genes she's got.

Rebecca Hall -- don't know who she is, either, but that doesn't mean anything -- I agree the color doesn't seem right for her, but I think the bigger problem is the major disconnect between the gown and her hair; it looks like she's going to her fitting on her way to the gym. I'm not a fan of one shoulder dresses, though.

Catalina Sandino Moreno - "creeping infection" -- !!
Actually, I think the gown would look great on someone extremely tall and flat chested. It's just not right for her, though she's lovely.

Rebecca Hall needs a new (lighter) color of foundation. Didn't you see the color lines in the mirror before you left the house. And if you had it professionally done - well find a new makeup artist. they are color blind

Devon Aoki wins! She's got the only really memorable and beautiful look of the bunch. Stunning and perfect dress, hair, makeup.

OK, maybe Juliet Lewis is crazy in a "Hey, Girl, you're crazy!" kind of way. But that combination of make-up and expression makes her look asylum-crazy in that last photo!

I think Bar Rafaeli looks amazing. The dress is beautiful and she is stunning.

I had no idea Alberta Ferretti was such a great designer. They're a little too goddess-y for me but they are beautiful gowns. My favorite is Rebecca Hall's.

I love Mischa's dress but I feel like the dress was made for someone who has curves.

Anonymous said...

Angelina looks fabulous. That bitch is gorgeous!!!

I agree, she needs more curves to fill it. I also hate the hair.

I hate Catalina Sandino Moreno's gown. I'm so sick of these Big Bird dresses.

She's a very famous model. I can't stand her but she looks stunning!

I was thinking that I might like Juliette Lewis's dress on someone less crazy and/or more relevant, but even then, I think it screams "community theater production of Chicago."

Creeping infection and the Mermaid are my favorites. The royal blue color on the last one is quite fetching, too.

Rebecca Hall's dress is stunning, but definitely on the wrong person. Devon Aoki looks flawless.

As for Ms. Jolie, pregnant stars are contractually obligated to go the goddess route, aren't they?

Anonymous said...

Mischa looks GORGEOUS! And she always looks like crap.

Anonymous said...

All the quibbles are minor. Those are all beautiful, simple dresses. Goddess-y yes, but there's a reason that style has been around for a few millenia -- it's flattering to almost everyone.

GothamTomato said...

None of them really do anything for me, but the one who came dressed like the Chrysler Building is probably the best of an unmemorable lot.

And I've never heard of any of those celebs (except Juliet Lewis). Celebs just aren't what they used to be. Makes me think that, with the right (or way wrong) outfit & attitude, I could show up on a red carpet and fool the stalkerazzi myself.

Love Devon Aoki!
FYI, she's the daughter of Rocky Aoki, the chef/mastermind of Benihana; she's the only 1 of his kids he didn't sue. Her credits include "2 Fast 2 Furious" & "Sin City 1 & 2" et al. Very sweet, seen her around LA w/ Lenny Kravitz. She definitely has a bright future in the entertainment biz.

I agree w/ Guccigirl, Alberta Ferretti's gowns are incredible.

But I do wish Angelina would show up in something more than her nightgown.

The problem with Rebecca Hall isn't the dress (although the color IS blah), it's HER. She looks like she is stepping out of the dressing room from trying on that thing after going to the gym, not taking a shower and running errands for a while. Natural is one thing, unkempt is another. All the others look red carpet ready.

you never heard of Angelina Jolie???? wow!!!! :-)

my favorite dress is Bar Rafaeli's one, it's gorgeous!

I have a nightgown that looks a lot like the dress Angelina Jolie is wearing.

Imbruglia's is pretty, but not red carpet.

Love the styling of Rebecca Hall's dress, but I don't care for that color. However, that delicate pleating is to die for!

Totally dislike the color of Bar Rafaeli's dress, and there is way too much happening at the neckline.

Moreno looks like Big Bird fell into the Easter egg dye.

Aoki rocks it. Fabulous dress, and she does right by it (and vice versa).

Lewis took a wrong turn on the way to a '20s-themed costume party.

Love the deep color of Barton's dress, and there's that wonderful pleating again.

But I must second Gothamtomato: who are these people???

GothamTomato said...

"mommyca said: you never heard of Angelina Jolie???? wow!!!! :-) "

Oh yeah, I forgot she was there. That tells you how memorable the dress was. I can never figure out what the press spends sooo much time documenting her or why anyone cares. Celebs have become so watered down, the culture has become like one big, long study hall.

The only dress I truly love, love, love is Devon Aoki's. The rest are just cookie cutters of so many other goddess drapings.
I don't know any of these "celebs" exept for Angelina Jolie and Juliette Lewis.
Can just ANYONE be a "celeb-on-a-red-carpet" nowadays???

If you want to see more of Devon, rent D.E.B.S. It's a supporting role, but very funny.

Thank you, to those who filled me in on Devon Aoki. I'll return the favor: Catalina Sandino Moreno was in Maria, Full of Grace. I believe this was her first role, and she was really good in it.

Several others I still don't know, but I can live with that.

I love the color of Catalina Sandino Moreno's dress.

Mischa Barton's dress is also a great color (I'm into the blues) but she's a girl wearing a woman's dress.

Bar's dress is fabulous! I want to wear that to my prom.

Anonymous said...

Angelina Jolie looks absolutely lovely and Rebecca Hall's dress would look much better on somebody else.

Anonymous said...

Devon Aoki's gown is absolutely stunning! The color, the silhouette, the fit, everything! And she wears it exquisitely, too. Fabulosity knock-out!

The seafoam color was about the only thing I really loved about Rebecca Hall's gown. I think her makeup (or lack thereof)and hairstyle (or lack thereof) is what's washing her out.

I think it's generally a great color for someone fair. She looks blah because she looks as though she just rolled out of bed for a fitting. The design of the gown was odd, too.

Have a great weekend!

Well, Angie is going for comfort...when I was that pregnant, I went for nothing short of comfortable. The color may have been signaling how she felt at the time!

I wasn't impressed with any of the gowns. Feh!

You guys never seem to like red carpet gowns...is it a case of fashion overload. There were only a few of those dresses I didn't like (mostly the creeping infection one and juliet lewis)I think everyone looked pretty good.

And lay off any lady who is third trimester with twins. Saint Angelina could walk up in a raggety bathrobe and people should tell her how beautiful and glamourous she is.

It's the hair. On (redhead version) Nicole Kidman, or Cynthia Nixon, it would kill.

Angelina/Alberta - yes, it's a yawn, but compared to 99.9999% of the maternity wear out there? It's a win! And I love the fact that Alberta designed the straps to be bra-friendly for a very supportive maternity bra.

Natalie - I agree completely. Pretty color but the twist top is so all over JC Penny these days. Done.

Rebecca - Geena Davis: the Next Generation

Bar Whatshername - meh

Catalina - Looks like her dress peed feathers

Devon - Love the dress, love the attitude. The hair fall? Not so much.

Juliette - You said it!

Mischa - I don't know. In the words of Tim Gunn, that' a whole lotta look.

Anonymous said...

I just read that Bar Rafaeli's dress was decorated with over 2000 carats worth of Chopard jems. WOW!!

Catalina - Looks like her dress peed feathers

ROFL. So true!

Anonymous said...

I love the dress but Mischa just doesn't rock it.

Rebecca Hall is gorgeous too bad she looked kind of uncomfortable in the dress. I guess she's not that kind of gal, red carpet and all. By the way, she's awesome in the movie, better than Scarlett Johansson.

Angelina looks stunning! She looks great pregnant...More power to Angie, she's gorgeous no matter what she wears

"Actress Juliette Lewis at the Cannes opening ceremony party.

Hahahahaha. She rocks! She's an amazing actress!!! She has the reputation of an off-the-wall, crazy character who loves to live on the edge, I love her quirky style!

Anonymous said...

Angelina's gorgeous and, yeah, seriously pregnant (so we won't comment on the shoes!) but I still think the dress could be better. It really looks like a polyester nightie. Even a different colour would help.

One of the nice things about Devon Aioki's gown is the cut at the bust and pits --it sits nice and high, but isn't too tight or binding. I'd love to see how it's constructed.

Love Juliet Lewis. She always looks crazy, and as if she's having a good time.

My 6 year old looked at the pictures with me, and said Rebecca looked like "chicken on a stick, but that's just my opinion."
And she hates chicken, so that's not a good thing.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Devon Aoki looks incredible.

As for everyone else: I looked at the pictures 3.5 seconds ago and I've already forgotten what the dresses looked like. Big yawn. Sorry, Alberta.

You said it Stephanie Lucas! I totally agree!

And whoever said to give Alberta props for dressing Mischa is right-- she usually looks like she is trying to imitate one of the scary full house twins!

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen--

I could only picture them singing with Uncle Jesse and I forgot their names!

Angelina manages to look gorgeous pregnant with twins. She is a goddess.

Mischa Barton never looked so good.

Did anyone see Juliet Lewis on the Ashley paige show? Gawd I love those swimsuits!!!
