Sex and the City

Honeys, we keep going back and forth on this one. We originally thought that the idea of revisiting Carrie and the gals after they got their perfect ending sounded like a bad one. We thought the show had wrapped everything up in a nice neat bow and the four of them would be entering phases in their lives not particularly conducive to the sometimes funny, sometimes painful and oftentimes raunchy take on love, sex and relationships that the show provided.

Then we saw this:

And damn, if that doesn't look at least a little enjoyable to us. We'll grant you, it looks like they're doing everything they can to wring some drama out of it, but based on that trailer, they all still seem to have the chemistry that made the show so enjoyable in the first place.

We admit it. We miss them. The show, when it was first airing, was always a viewing must for us and like so many gays and their gals, we got together on Sunday nights with our Cosmos to jeer at Carrie and her poor choices and leer at Samantha's latest buttboy. And let's face it, at its height, the show became something of a cultural phenomenon, with countless young women pinning big fabric flowers on to themselves and declaring "I'm a Carrie!" or "I'm a Miranda!" Of course most gay men considered themselves a Samantha.

Since the show went off the air, there appears to have been a bit of a cultural backlash against it. As if we all woke up from a collective hangover wondering what we ever saw in it in the first place. But when we sit down and watch our DVDs of past seasons (yes, we own all of them), we think the show still holds up well. We suspect a lot of the backlash is directed mainly at Sarah Jessica Parker, who had so many promotional deals, she came off as something of a whore, post-SATC.

Still, we're not ashamed to admit, we'll be there when the movie opens. We still fear it's gonna suck, but our sense of nostalgia coupled with a pretty good trailer, leaves us hopeful. How about you? Are you going to see it when it comes out?

I was very disappointed when you guys seemed so down on the movie; I understtand how the ending of the show was so perfect there wasn't anything else needed, but face it: Sex and the City is fabulous. And so will the movie be fabulous.

PS- I was one of the gawkers when they filmed the scene of Carrie bashing Big with her bouquet. It was amazing. I met Michael Patrick King and David Eigenberg. Perhaps I'll post my pictures....

Anyway, I'm glad you two are on board!

OH! And PPPs- I'm glad there's FINALLY a new post here. When are Musical Mondays coming back?

I thought it wasn't such a good idea until last night when I decided to watch a few DVDs because there was nothing on TV. I'd forgotten how raucously funny it was and now I can't wait for the movie. My best friend and I are already planning where we should see it and how we should celebrate it (probably a marathon of the seasons of course). And May 30 isn't that far away now!!

I gotta say: TERRIBLE tagline. It hurts me right here, guys. Right here.

I'll see it for Jennifer Hudson, probably.

I will absolutely be there regardless of how bad I think it might be. But come on, some of us gays are Charlottes too.

I'll be there...

But I'm nervous

Nerves be damned... My girls and I will be there, post-cosmos, to see Carrie and her girls. Always will... DVD or theater, doesn't matter.

Cheers!

Dear TLo,

Well, if I do see my kissin' cousin (ah, those days decades ago in Cincinnati) on the big screen, I'll have to go with a few other dames and have cosmos. Before and after.

All the best,

That is such a delightful post on so many levels! Made me grin.... Thanks, Mom. ;-)

I'll probably wait for the DVD. I actually didn't like the nice, neat bowness of the finale. The idea that all of these women ended up with the man of their dreams seemed too pat, maybe even too Lifetime TV for women (yes, I went there). I hope the movie ending isn't so bow-like.

Plus I'm not sure I can take Pat Field's wardrobe choices on the big screen. And the thought of the movie inspiring more Carrie Bradshaw wannabes in their boho (and I mean ho) chic wearing stilettos they don't know how or can't walk in is too much. SJP barely pulls off that look. Few others can or should try.

thank you for the update! thank you thank you!

I will definitely be there. I often pull out my dvds and watch a couple episodes to get my fix. I miss the girls. I miss the men. I miss the cosmos. And I miss the fabulosity.

It may not be just like old times, but I'm still betting that those four can at least make it worth my $30, or whatever a movie ticket costs these days.

I'm definitely gonna be there!

wet blanket here: i NEVER liked this show. and i never liked those big fabric flowers, either.

And Sarah Jessica is awesome, okay, but she either needs to gain a few pounds or give it up and admit to being "old." Girl doesn't look as good as she used to.

so, no: i shall not be viewing this film. but i am glad to have TLo to keep me informed on such doings.

I also second a return of Musical Mondays, and I (deadly seriously) would really love to see you take on High School Musical Two (the post will write itself). But make sure to see HSM 2, because the first one is really awful.

I don't know, boys. I saw the trailer in a theater last weekend and my friend and I looked at each other and collectively shrugged our shoulders. And we both really liked the show! I think the concept is over.

OTOH, sneaking a gigantic cocktail in a Poland Spring bottle in my bag, maybe I'll try it in a theater.

Rainwood, thank you for going to Lifetime, somebody had to break the ice on that one!

TLo, you will love it, it's probably the greatest B/W movie musical ever.

I have to admit, I was with you guys with your earlier concern about this movie. But, I've been re-watching the seasons the past few weeks, just for fun (and because I don't have cable), and I decided that I was actually really excited to see the girls again!

Somehow, when it's not in your life on a regular basis, you forget how fabulous it is!

WHERE have you two BEEN?? I'm thrilled that you're back on board for the SATC movie and I'm loving the constant updates on Project Rungay, but I miss my Musical Mondays just as much as everyone else. I hope they're back this summer, because it'll be the only thing keeping me sane at work. =)

Also, major kudos to the person who suggested HSM2; my little sister watches it CONSTANTLY, and I need a new way to amuse myself during it. =)

I never watched Sex and the City and never had any interest in watching Sex and the City, so I won't be watching the movie, either.

That said, if it's your cup of tea, enjoy!

P.S. I agree with another laura - Top Hat please! (And/or Gay Divorcée!)

Never having had HBO and only having seen some episodes on DVD, I mostly know the show through the sanitized-for-your-protection reruns. Even so, I enjoy it. My husband (who’s never seen an entire episode) used to give me grief about watching when it first hit TBS, thinking it was like Skinemax for women. But as I told him, and I do believe this to be true, the heart of the show really is about the friendships between the four. I left my close girlfriends behind when the hubby and I moved in search of greener pastures, and it’s the Carrie/Miranda friendship that I particularly appreciate at this point in my life. I loved the fight they had over Carrie giving up her career to move to Paris that ended with Carrie walking away (natch) while Miranda tries a last-ditch effort to get her point across by calling out, “Carrie, I love you.” And the scene at Miranda’s mother’s funeral when she’s walking back up the church aisle all alone, crying, and Carrie joins her – ack, I get veklempt just thinking about it. Boys may come and go, but a truly close friend is worth her weight in gold.

So yes, I’ll probably see the movie on DVD. And wish I could call my best friends to come over and watch it with me.

Oh, My Boys. So glad that you are back over here. I love you over on RunGay, but it's here where you really make my heart sing.

Been chekcing daily for ages, praying for an update. And after watching Amy Adams last night in the giant 'eh' that was "Enchanted," I was going to ask you to post something/anything here so that I didn't have to look at that Oscar red carpet picture of Adams and be reminded of the 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Sex and the City? I will be there. LOVED the show. Watched the entire series on DVD during the early days of living with Ed so I have especailly fond memories of the show.

A friend calls me Charlotte, but I always see myself as Miranda ... and there are quite a few who knew me when who would certainly label me Samantha. But that was then.

Love another suburban mom's sippy cup method for movie theater drinking. I have made popcorn in the microwave before going to a movie and thrown the steaming bag in a napsack or messenger bag with a few cold beers. Those teenage ushers have never said a word to me as I cracked one open during the previews. I know it looks cheap and tacky. But the big blessing of middle age is that I don't give a hoot what anyone thinks of that.

I think the movie will do well. MPK hasn't let me down yet.

Based on nothing other than the line that Jennifer Hudson had in the trailer about coming to NYC to fall in love, I flashed to a new HBO spinoff series with Hudson as the lead charcter in the next incarnation of SATC. Who knows? Stranger things have happened. I thought they were crazy when they decided to spin Frasier off of Cheers.

Now if we could just go back to an occasional Musical Monday, all will right in the world.

With all former vestiges of creativity and sly urban wit smothered by technicolor baby vomit and the unpleasant reality that I will never again be able to pee without an audience, SATC (re)taught me that best girlfriends and a really fabulous pair of shoes feeds the soul like non-other. For which I will gladly plunk down my hard earned cash in gratitude.

Nope. I never did watch the show, and have never understood the appeal of SJP, to me she's always been the ugly girl from Square Pegs. I'm more of a Sopranos girl myself...

"And the scene at Miranda’s mother’s funeral when she’s walking back up the church aisle all alone, crying, and Carrie joins her – ack, I get veklempt just thinking about it." I'm with you, Chicksinger, that whole arc was my all time fav from SATC, esp when Samantha started crying at the funeral and Steve showed up without being invited. I just don't think the movie will come close to matching the original but I'll go just to get my fill of Chris Noth and Evan Handler! And sorry J-Hud fans but I just don't get her appeal, she seems pretty limited in her abilities so that sort of puts a damper on the movie for me as well.

chica la bouche said...

I'm a Miranda in Samantha's wardrobe.

I'll see it. I loved the show, and I think enough of the original people are involved to give it a chance.

I think you guys hit the nail on the head with the backlash being a response to SJP's media whoring.

I had been fine with giving the show up once it was over, but I have to admit that I was excited when I first saw the trailer. And I'm sure we'll all love it for the same reason we loved the show-- it's fantastic escapism!

Life is good again w/a post from TLo. You guys are so great. Chicksinger, I know where you are coming from. The GF's I had were great. I wish I could just call them & go see a movie. But nothing is easy as you get older as work, babies, husbands have to be taken care of 1st.

In my desperation I have watched the TBS reruns. I even watch Lipstick Jungle to get some grasp of smart dialoge from dippy white chicks in their 40's. I have a better chance of relating to the characters than the reality chicks from Rock of Love.

Ok last thing (Also, I do want contemporary musical reviews w/ HSM2 being the 1st, but that's just me.) about SJP that I must say. The little whippet was on gov't assistance when she was a child and never forgot where she came from. Also on FreshAir (NPR, oh you guys know!)SJP said something I haven't forgotten. Her husband Matthew Broderick doesn't spend any $ to support her. She would feel guilty if he worked just for a job/rent. Likewise she has her own money. Maybe things changed after their kid, but it was really weird to listen to. She's so sweet and gracious w/every little thing, but I do think she has that paranoid feeling that it will all go away within a few days at Bear Sterns.

Thanks for reading.

I'm a Carrie/Charlotte hybrid who CANNOT WAIT to see this movie!

LilyTheLustyLibrarian said...

Well, when the show first aired, I was stuck in that teenage "I;m a Jesus freak and you all need to be saved" mode, so naturally a show that openly talked about sex, I recoiled in horror.

Now, on the other hand........

I've only watched a handful of SATC episodes, but looking back, I see how much fabulousness I've been missing from my life! *tear*

So, I'm going to pull a Harry Potter premiere. Dress up as a sixties-jackie o-version of Charlotte, grab my dressed up girlfriends, arm myself with cosmo in the sippy cup, and go to the midnight premiere with all of my other attention-whores!

Anybody else with me?

Oh, I'll be there. I might even fly to Seattle so I can see it with my sister. There's a theater near her that serves drinks, and we have to watch it with Cosmos in hand.

Hey if you start the evening off with appetizers and cosmos and end the evening with dessert and Irish Coffee, even if the movie isn't amazing, the alcohol will help it go down a little bit easier.

Am I the only one who didn't like the trailer? I felt very strange after viewing it, like the four of them came back from the dead, or are imitating their former selves, or something.

I gotta agree with this. I never regularly watched the show but when I did, I enjoyed it. However, now when I think of the show, all I remember is walking into a dressing room at the GAP and finding SJP starring at him from the other side of the door.

That F-ing trailer is so good, straight guys who fear SATC's power will line up to see this flick. I agree w/ everything you say, TLO. Yes, the series finale tied everything up excellently. But when you have the writing talent of Michael Patrick King @ the keyboard, second helpings are just as satisfying.
Can't wait.

Um, the backlash is due to fans re-watching episodes and, now able to look past the initial first impression of fabulousness, realize that it's actually not that well-written. The occassional bon-mot does make for an entire 30-minute episode.

Blech. Not interested.

GothamTomato said...

I know what you mean; I was dreading it, at first, too. Not only did the wedding gown look awful (still does), but after seeing those edited/watered down versions of SATC on basic cable, I worried that the movie would not be the classic that it was on HBO: That it wouldn't still have the same gay heart that made it great.

But these trailers look good. I'll be there.

But the one disapointment I had with the original series, was with the ending: With the way they all ended up with their dream man ala Cinderella. I think that was a betrayal to the most important part of the audience for the show.

It would have been much better if the 'happily ever after' didn't have to include a man. Being independent is perfectly fine, and actually preferable to a lot of paired-up situations I can think of. But maybe they see that error as well, and the snippets of Miranda & Carrie give clues to other options.

--GothamTomato

GothamTomato said...

And btw, I think the backlash was a response to all those wannabees: Those idiot-girls who are out there running around trying to act like the characters in SATC (like those idiot Housewives of NY), who do not seem to understand that Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda & Samatha were fictional characters, written by very talented comedy writers.

Yes, there was a resonance for urban single women, (especially because there was no other show that spoke about our lives), but unless you have your own comedy writers following you around, don't try to imitate a TV character. It never works.

Comedy is resonance plus exageration, it's not reality. A woman who tries to act like a SATC character comes off looking as dumb as a guy who tries to imitate a stunt he saw on 'Jackass'.

I always thought Carrie was a little bit emotionally retarded. Relationships are really not that difficult, especially if both the people act like adults.

I wont see the movie in the theatre cause it seems like more Carrie Vrs Big whining, and I think that relationship tension is played out. She is a bit long in the tooth to be having a on again off again boyfriend (high school much.)

I will however netflix the movie to see the other characters. I love me some Harry and I am always down with more Samantha!

Anonymous said...

I don't think the backlash was about SJP's hawking. I think it was more about it being just about the only show I can think of that started out with fully rounded characters who gradually became more and more two-dimensional caricatures.

I had to stop after the third season. I've seen pieces of other seasons. It started out special and then became just like any other show on TV, sadly.

I loved the series and own every season, but I have to admit feeling a bit disappointed at the conclusion. It seemed incongruous for such an innovative show to to tidy everyone up with a long-term relationship at the end.

At first I didn't want to see the movie either. If the characters hadn't evolved it would be sad, and if they had evolved too much it would be a let down.

Then I saw the trailer and fell in love with Charlotte's daughter. Now I must see the movie!

I didn't think the last episode tied things up neatly. We could always see the cracks in the relationship between Miranda and her man. I never thought Carrie and Big would make it, either.

Scenes I'd like to see:

Miranda comes out of the closet (just like in real life, eh?)

Carrie develops debilitating knee pain and be forced to wear Z-Coil shoes.

Samantha takes on the public relations for a Republican congressman just caught in a homosexual relationship.

Charlotte, a cub scout den mother, springs into action after the troop comes down with head lice.

If they can do all these things a still look fabulous, you've got a real movie right there.

kate said...

Perhaps I'm insane, but I think if there's enough story there, then I would have loved to see a miniseries, something like 6episodes, one-hour each on HBO. Then you have time to flush out real, significant stories for each of the four ladies. I loved the series, and will be seeing the movie, but I worry that it won't be satisfying simply due to lack of sufficient time. Nonetheless, I'm excited because it does look fun to watch.
