In or Out: La Nina

Thursday, March 13, 2008 by
Darlings, let's turn the tables, shall we?

Here's La Nina at the Night to Benefit Raising Malawi and UNICEF:

Love the shoes.

As for the dress, well she's certainly right on trend, because that yellow seems to be the "it" color for Spring. More specifically, yellow and purple combinations are all the rage and she, being the fashionista, managed to work the purple in with her accessories.

It's a very youthful look and credit to her for being able to pull it off because a lot of women in her age bracket probably wouldn't be able to.

Not supercrazy about the hem on this dress, though. Other than that, the bitch is making it work. What do you think? Is she in or is she out?

She's in because she's Nina and she will most likely grind you to a pulp if you disagree.

In all seriousness, she looks good. Not great. The yellow isn't that flattering of a color on her. Just because it's "on trend" doesn't mean it works for everyone.

She's still stylish and lovely, though.

Definitely in.

I love the dress and, even though it is a decidedly youthful look, she looks great in it. (Damnit). It may be a wonky photo but her hair looks kind of non-Ninaish limp. Normally that Brazilian mane is her best feature.

Anonymous said...

I think she looks great, even though I’m not fond of yellow. Is it me or did she have some work done on her face?

Anonymous said...

definitely in. she glows in it!

Anonymous said...

she looks good, and the dress is cute and unique. i'm not digging the hair, though. people always talk about how her hair is so lovely, but i always get distracted by the flyaways. nothing wrong with a little bit of product.

Anonymous said...

Like the hair, shoes, and design of dress. Hate the color and fabric. Its already wrinkled at the bottom.

Anonymous said...

I love it and she looks great! I'm such a sucker for bright colors and flowers. It's a shame that the dress is a little wrinkly in the picture.

Fugly dress that certainly isn't breast friendly.

As for out, there are rumors that Meana Garcia is on her way out of Elle.

a big "IN".

that dress is for the new gucci's collection, isn't it?

Anonymous said...

I love the accessories. Nina always has the right accessories.

Anonymous said...

Well... she looks fabulous... but what is up with the squished boobies?

Anonymous said...

She looks disheveled, like she got into a wrestling match with the cabbie on the way over. The placement of the dress looks like she turned it clockwise 90 degrees and then tried to put it on.

Do like the yellow, the fab purple bag, and I will say she always looks ultra-fantastic for her age.

Great shoes. Average dress that wrinkles too much. Hem looks unfinished. BUT.. props for being fashion forward and thinking of turning a glass doorknob into a ring!

She's in, and I"m not just saying that because she'd beat me down with that little purse if I didn't.

"She looks disheveled, like she got into a wrestling match with the cabbie on the way over."

In total agreement. I think she looks great, really pulls everything off, but I'm distracted by the wrinkles in the dress. But she's La Nina, and her purse is probably worth more than my life. So who am I to judge?

A PRBitch, that's who.

Anonymous said...

She's in but just barely. That taxicab yellow may be on trend but that color rarely looks good on anyone. I like the dress but it's badly wrinkled! Steamers and irons are your friend, Nina. Great accessories.

And I hate her new hairstyle. The bangs are not flattering and seem to diminish the glories of her luxurious mane, which is her best feature. (I hate the bangs on Heidi, too.)

Anonymous said...

Out.

Okay dress on someone with different coloring. Fabric choice (wrinkles) ruin it for everyone, though.

And Nina's hair! Was she on her way to the mall?

Ms Sangrail said...

Oooh, yellow and purple, just in time for Easter!

That particular shade of yellow is not the most flattering for her,and me thinks that a pareo looks best at the beach or the pool.

But, it's not boring, and she *is* Nina, so I guess she's in. I don't want a Colombian fashion cartel to come after me.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry Nina, but you're out. I HATE that canary yellow.

Unknown said...

I think she's a hottie, and its a nice stylish look and she's pulling it off.
However, she has great skin and that color isn't doing anything for it.

Mom said...

I think she looks good in that color, but I don't like the silhouette at all on her. Shapeless dresses really aren't for women of a certain age. They just make you look older. Love the shoes, though.

Gonna have to heave an OUT at La Nina.

Anonymous said...

That some fierce yellow!

Anonymous said...

Nina is a lovely woman, but seriously - she's a bit long in the tooth to be wearing this outfit. She looks OK, but think about how much BETTER she would look wearing something more age appropriate or something more sophisticated. The look is too young for her.

GothamTomato said...

Not many women look good in yellow, but she is one who does. Unfortunately THIS yellow dress is pretty awful. She's not doing the designer any favors by getting it all crumpled before posing. So, I'd say she's out.

But her right hand, the one with the BIG ring, holding the purple clutch, is very in. And by the way she's holding that hand, I'm thinking she's intentionally trying to show off either the bag or the ring (as part of the deal).

--GothamTomato

Whitney said...

I think a different material would make the dress look more sophisticated - and thus a little more age appropriate.

But i wouldn't ever tell her that. Don't piss off Nina!

Anonymous said...

It has that "hop out of the shower and answer the door to the UPS guy" look about it.

Are those new teeth?

GothamTomato said...

Needs more shape. Right now, it looks like she took a very nice long skirt and hiked it up to her arm pits.

Anonymous said...

I applaud the yellow and purple and love the shoes but the overall look is OUT imo.

The dress looks like a crumpled yellow napkin. I think I styled a toga like that years ago for a college frat party. I wonder if the style isn't a nod to VictorYA's woman-unfriendly styles.

She's in, brava! to ninagarciafashiondirectorofellemagazine.

But I think I may be disagreeing on the reasons why.

Hate the shoes but, to my surprise, I love the dress. I couldn't wear this shade of yellow even when I was 20 but Nina is rocking it. Good for her (and I don't mean that in a "bless her heart" kind of way!).

Kira said...

Out. Between the twist at the bodice, the lopsided bow, the v-ed neckline, and the overlap of the skirt .. there's a whole lot of ugly going on in this dress.

Maybe those hideous draglines to her hips will convince designers to create for a female figure, rather than a stick ...

AFHS Nina, you're not Goldie; wear a bra.

PhantomMinuet said...

The color looks good on her, but the design of the dress is really off-putting. It's like someone took a yellow satin potato sack and knotted it at the top to keep Nina's "potatoes" from spilling out.

What's up with criticizing Nina for flyaways? It looks super-straight and shiny to me. If it were any flatter she'd just look like a Staten Island mall rat, or like she was wearing a wig.

I liked the more highlighted, pre-bangs look better for her hair, but it still looks beautifully groomed and well-cared for, yet natural. Hair is really not supposed to look like a leather jacket from Wilson's.

You know, she really doesn't seem to have a great sense of what colors she looks good in. That green at last year's reunion show was just as awful as this.

To me, she just looks like she's trying too hard in this.

I hope she's not out of Elle, as one of the posters said earlier. But if she is, I hope it's for her own fabulous show.

It looks like she did the nasteee with a cabana boy, her fancy beach wrap got all messed up and she just tried to fix herself in the hall mirror in the hotel before getting to the event.

If that hem went down the runway over at PR, she would be chewing the poor designer's bones till dinner.

And, yes, yellow may be IN, but that shade of egg yolk did NOTHING for the skin tone.

A 6 (maybe 7) for effort, and 3 for execution.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

I'm not thrilled the YELLOW thing this season. Yellow is a really difficult color for clothes, in my opinion, and should be used sparingly. But we are going to see it all over the freaking place. Anyone remember the Year of Chartreuse in the late '80s? As for the look overall. . . I suspect it was better in person, in movement. In a still picture it looks too baby doll and too short.

robin-m said...

Yech. Amazed to see Nina in this fat banana dress. It's wrinkled (poor fabric choice), and the hem looks wonky. To use her own words -- this dress looks cheap. And it hides her figure rather than enhancing it.

Whenever I see a 35+ woman in this type of dress, I wince. It's a young look, and an older woman just looks like she's trying to hide the junk in her trunk.

What looks great: the color, her shoes, her legs.

Another thought: Maybe she's pregnant again? In which case this choice would make more sense . . .

Well she is Nina Garcia so by default she "can" wear it, but should a woman of her age no matter how fab be wearing a mini dress? I'm with the PR dudes on the length part....it the hem was a little longer I would be all for it. I also don't think the color works on her, I think the yellow should had more golden tones to it which would have given the dress a richness that is is laccccccccccccking!

Anonymous said...

Well, that babydoll silhouette is, unfortunately, still with us. And this dress brings a twist to it.

At first glance, my reaction was, "AAaahhhh! Where are my sunglasses!" but it grew on me.

Is Nina with child again, does anyone know? This dress would hide an incipient baby bump.

Milla said...

Babies...
You are to kind and sweet or you realy fear Meana.
She so does NOT pull it off.
That dress is abou 20 years too young on her.
It belongs on a 22 year old. And The last time Nina saw 22 ( or looked 22) was the first Clinton run in office. The woman has to be in her late 40's-early 50's but women that thin and who tan look a lot older and it's hard to tell.
The neckline squashes her already limited bosom like a mammogram machine too...
For me, she was so out.
She needs to re-assess her concept of age-appropriateness and take a page from Madonna's playbook.
Love,
Milla

Hm...was this dress designed by Victorya? Is boobie-smooshing the new black? It could have been fabulous, if not for the complete disregard for a woman's natural curves. Two boobs down on the dress, but I do agree that the shoes are hot!

I might be biased, though, because I have an admittedly indiscriminate adoration for anything yellow. It's always been my favorite color (guess it's the Leo in me) so I'm glad it's on trend right now. Perhaps it's true that not many can wear it, but if you can, I say rock it out. Also, wish we had a better shot of the armband. The design reminds me a little of Chris's museum piece minus the big collar, the way it's wrapped/draped and the material. I think the effect works better here in a shorter cocktail dress. I prefer the towel look to the bathrobe look, I guess.

Anonymous said...

The only time anyone should wear that color is if they're biking victoriously into Paris.

I'm pretty much over the babydoll silouette on ANYONE, but especially on ladies in their more, uh, elegant years.

I guess Nina is pretty much required by her job to wear the hippest hottest trends, though, so she can be given a pass.

I actually like the dress but in any other color than canary yellow. Just makes her look ashy. It's very Victorya on top with the smooshy boobs!

BTW, she's only 43 and not dead yet. The color makes it young and would look better on someone not so "tan". Also, if you're going to make a statement with that color, you really need to turn up the makeup and accessories a notch. Just ONE notch, not 10.

Rainwood said...

Although I'm not a big fan of bright yellow, I think Nina has the right skintone for it. The dress itself is kind of cute, in a Peeps Easter kind of way, maybe a little too youthful for La Chica but there's no getting past the wrinkled crotch and the wonky hem. I'm also not loving the slave bracelet and gumball ring with the dress. Takes it a little too casual/Carrie Bradshaw.

So my verdict is neither fab nor fugly. More like f-okay. So she's in. But just barely.

Anonymous said...

WAY OUT! That dress does nothing for her.

Anonymous said...

As many have said, this dress is too young for Nina, but worse than that, this dress doesn't fit her.

Nina is probably a size 2 but the dress seems to be a size 1. The long fold in the front should hang straight down, not be pulled open.

If the dress were a larger size there wouldn't be fabric folds pulling sideways toward her hips.

This dress, longer and roomier, would have been elegant.

Oddly enough, the color doesn't bother me. As someone before mentioned, her professional role somewhat obligates her to *try* to keep in step with current color trends. I think she would have done better with an orange or golden yellow --as opposed to egg yolk, but the deed is done.

There's a *reason* that we 40-something women(generally speaking) avoid the mini-length. Unless it's winter and you're sporting some mighty fine black tights -- the KNEES are usually a dead give away of how many years have passed into memory.

Check out Chica's knees, which she is coyly attempting to obfuscate with the purple clutch.

While I think she missed the opportunity to accentuate her slender, fit body...I don't think it's a total screw-up. Perhaps next time--more waist definition, less knees. ;)

Anonymous said...

I'm not wild about the dress but I think pairing it with the purple clutch was brilliant.

I think there's some really interesting structure going on there in the neckline, sort of origami-like. The rest of the dress being relatively simple keeps it from seeming overdone. But yes, it smashes her chest and the hem is weird.

I don't think it's too short on her though. I should look so good at 36. I should have looked so good at 26.

That dress looks like Rami draped it while running at full speed, and then Victorya snuck up and made sure it was even LESS symmetrical and wacky because IN HER HEART SHE COULD NOT LEAVE IT ALONE.

Or, Tom Hank's liferaft from Cast Away blew away and exploded onto Nina's chest.

Thank you and goodnight.

Anonymous said...

So far out I can barely see her without a telescope. Nina, honey, are you getting enough oxygen out there?

Honestly, I don't care how trendy that yellow is, it's a hideous color. Very unflattering. And the color's not even the worst of this look. The fabric looks wrinkled, she's got that flattened-boob look that Victorya was so enamored with, and the bow! I don't even know what to say about the bow. And, as you mentioned, the hem is a mess.

The accessories are ugly as well. That enormous purple cocktail ring? Please. It's a little too reminiscent of the plague of J-Lo engagement ring replicas that popped up on the fingers of so many teenage girls three years ago. The clunky mid-forearm bracelet on Nina's left arm is also fugtastic and also, to use one of Nina's favorite phrases, a little dated. Okay, one doesn't need to pull out the diamonds on all occasions, but I'd expect Nina to have a little more class.

Sorry, this look is just a miss on all levels. Even the cute shoes can't save it.

"Women her age should either be showing legs or shoulders, not both (even if they're in pretty good shape)."

I've been tickled by some of the comments about age-appropriateness of Nina's dress, mostly because they sound like things I *might* hrmmm...cough...have said, in my 20's... back when my knees were as perky as a pair of silicone breasts.

Well, maybe that was an awkward analogy, but paola's comment about "one or the other" I think has great merit.

I'm Nina's contemporary in age and this dress could have been mitigated by hem length OR shoulder coverage.

Well done, paola...very Tim Gunn of you. :)

Many of the posts seem highly critical like this isn't a picture from real life. Her hair isn't perfectly in place, there's a wrinkle in her dress, the color isn't perfect for her skin ... but it's not a fashion shoot for a magazine layout you know. She went to a party. She got out of the car and the dress wrinkled from it. Maybe there was a nice breeze.

She looks incredible and anyone who disagrees should email me their picture to show me how they think it should be done! Okay, just kidding.

Call me conservative.

Like so many others, I don't like what the neckline does to the breasts. Can't see one, and the other looks completely squeezed.

The fabric may be beautiful, but unless the fundraiser is in San Tropez or some other resort location, it looks way too much like a Club Med sarong to be appropriate for this kind of occasion.

Considering what Nina and Michael Kors were saying about Uli, I must say I'm surprised to see her in this look.

I know no one is gonna get this unless they follow college football.

Personally, I don't like the purple or the yellow. I won't be wearing these colors this spring. Besides the color, I think the dress is cute and it looks good on her.

I don't like the dress, and I like what's in it even less.

Nasty on all levels. I have never thought of Nina as particularly attractive. Her hair is much too long for a woman her age, however she might look mannish if it were shorter.

Hey Allen, I'm a huge Vikings fan but purple and yellow (gold) don't look good on anyone.......
