Emerging from lurkerdom to say that I didn't think I could love Alex's art any more, but his love of, and his ability to effortlessly riff on, Krazy Kat and Herriman is breaking my heart with delight. Alex totally wins, like, a billion internets for this.

I'm speechless. Alex! you are truly a marvel.
Oh my gracious stars! Krazy Kat! I'm really showing my advanced years, but this rings my chimes in a big way. Back in the dark ages I gave my 'senior speech' at prep school on the history of the comic strip, and Krazy Kat figured prominently in the early going. Complete, I might ad, with about 20 illustrations I drew myself of truly iconic comic characters, including Krazy Kat.
You're so utterly spot on, and the cleverness of this rather arcane reference just warms the cockles of my lil' ol' heart.

I used to LOVE Krazy Kat & Ignatz the Mouse. Weren't they taken off the air by do-gooders who didn't want impressionable youngsters seeing the cartoon violence? Sigh.

Ignatz the Rat! I used to ADORE Ignatz the Rat! I named a pet mouse after him when I was a kid.
Funny how they remove "bad influences" thinking they can shape our futures by doing so. When I was a kid we had prayer in schools (50's & 60's). But all kids threw spitballs and talked during the prayer. I was the only one who took it seriously. And to my knowledge, I am also the only one in that classroom who is now gay and agnostic. All the spitballers now go to churches and let some moron tell them how to think.

Also delurking to say that a Kazy Kat and PR crossover wasn't something I ever expected to see, but it made me laugh out loud and if possible, I love Alex's art even more now!
Love Alex's homage to Krazy and Ignatz and of course to SB and PP.
Good news, fellow lovers of Krazy and Ignatz. Fantagraphic Books (add a .com to get to their site) has published a series of books reprinting George Herriman's Krazy Kat/Ignatz Sunday strips from 1925 through 1942. They also have a set of Krazy Komics postcards. Perhaps not the cartoons we remember from television, but worth having nevertheless.

rosie's girl, thanks! I didn't know about the Fantagraphic book -- we have an Abrams Books study of Herriman's art from a few years back, but it's a quick dash through his entire life and works, with just a few strips from each year.
Now if Alex can just bring himself to do PR as Little Nemo in Slumberland (come on! it has a Princess and everything!), I may explode with delight.
But of course Alex as Alex, his own original self, is a terrific artist all by his lonesome.

The Fantagraphics books are really amazing, with covers and book design by the great Chris Ware. They reprint all the sunday strips in chronological order, and there is also a beautiful book of daily strips, called THE KAT THAT WALKED IN BEAUTY. Absolutely worth checking out....

Newspaper strips from the twenties, crime comics from the forties, Uncle Scrooge and Little Lulu in the fifties, superhero comics from the sixties, manga horror from the seventies, and the explosion of brilliant work in the eighties, across the board....
I could go on all day about this stuff!
Maybe someday in a lull, Tom and Lorenzo can give their critical analysis of the costumes of the Legion of Superheroes. I've heard it in person, and it's spectacular.
I'm an old fart but I don't remember anything about Krazy Kat except that it existed, but still I appreciate the art of this. Congrats to Alex! Looking forward to more, more, more!

alex! You are not alone in your esoteric knowledge. My husband (who discovered the reprinted Krazy Kats at Fanto) has also created a family tree for Donald Duck, is an expert on Thimble Theater, and my go-to man for all things Batman. I am in awe of both of you!
