Project Runway Canada - Marie Geneviève

Sunday, November 18, 2007 by

Metro News Canada interviewed Marie Geneviève last week after her exit from Project Runway Canada.

What was the big mistake that sent you home?

"I made the dress really too short, and that was the main reason. For them, I didn't listen to my customer because I made the dress shorter ... It just happened that way. I started playing with fabric and I tried to add some little details by hand-sewing, and it was really interesting, but then I realized that the dress was too short, and I didn't have any more fabric, because I designed it so I couldn't make it any longer."

What didn't you get to show the judges and the audience?
"I wanted to show them that I could do something classy and really well-done and chic, and I didn't have time to show them that I could do something really well-made and interesting."

What will you always remember from your experience on PRC?
"That it's a reality TV show and not real life. I guess what I'll really remember the other contestants - we loved the challenge so much. You learn to create under pressure, and the most important thing is you've got to learn to listen to what the judges have to say about your work and at the end of the day it's only what three people think in this world, and you need to listen to critics like Brian (Bailey), the mentor, but not too much - you need to keep it like yourself as well. This is the most important thing."

Calvin Klein or Christian Dior?
"Christian Dior. Calvin Klein is too mass-produced, and Christian Dior is really interesting and creative."

Who's going to win? Who do you want to win?
"Can I answer I want to win? I don't think I want to see anyone else win. Maybe Lucian."

Phew. I just finished it about 20 min before you posted. Seriously, what the hell? But even having suffered the cruel cruel blow of losing Carlie, I was able to love Iman.

That dress WAS the worst of the lot. It WAS cheap. And she DID pick that fabric. I haven't read her blog entry yet, though...I imagine it's spicey, she's not afraid to swear like a sailor. I wish it wasn't just based on that day's dress, though. poo.

Iman is one tough cookie. I think she could make Simon Cowell pee his pants.

Still adoring the rawness of PRC, as compared to PR-US. And can I just say how much I loved watching Iman tee off, protecting the integrity of Goth fashion? Seriously -- do NOT piss that woman off. Love her, though.

Why, oh why, didn't Carlie just let Megan's dress go out there with a busted zipper and answer for her inability to fix it herself? Although I would have sent Shernett home: that was a serious ugly design and so-so execution whereas Carlie's was pretty design (except for the ruched ass) and so-so execution (because of the material, though, not the actual sewing), IMO.

Betting on Lucian for the win now.

*Love* the raw & somewhat brutal judging we see on PRC...as well as the length of the judging segments. I can only hope we see more of both in PR:US this season.

That said, I don't think I've ever met a judge character that I've hated more than the fasion director of Elle vogue. Razzle dazzle? That has to be a joke? Right?

So glad that MG is back...her, Bidell, Lucian, and Kendra seem to be the talented ones of this bunch.

What a fantastic episode! Iman looked gorgeous and as bitchy as ever. I can't believe Carlie is gone.

Fucking Megan stays and Carlie is eliminated??????? WTF????? I HATE MEGAN!

Anonymous said...

I love Carlie but her dress looked cheap and poorly fitted.

Anonymous said...

Ouch! Iman doesn't mince her words when talking about the designs, does she? She scares me.

It's too bad people can't separate the designers' personalities from their designs, or remember that each show is a discrete element - it's what the designer did for that challenge that counts, not what they did before, however excellent.

And Carlie's sucked. The minute her model turned around and I saw that mess of fabric around her ass, I thought, "this girl's in trouble"!

That said, I am truly loving the fact that the judges, especially Iman, don't hold back in expressing their views. No mealy-mouthed, "I'm so sorry, dear, but I must disagree". She's a hoot and a half.

I just have one question: Who is Megan blowing to keep her in the game?

Anonymous said...

unfortunately Carlie's design was the worst, but it's very sad to see her go when much less talented designers are getting by making boring and oftentimes poorly fitted garments week to week - Megan and Stephen here's looking at you.

I love Iman. She's one righteous babe. The way she defended goth was awesome.

And you'll never see her showing her ass-crack, that's for sure!

It's a damn shame.

carlie's design wasn't the worst. shernett's was the worst. her's wasn't the most poorly executed. megan's was. megan sucks really. i don't like anything she's done. SO WHAT THE HELL IS SHE STILL DOING HERE?!?!?!? maybe carlie chose a shitty fabric, but how many cheap looking designs do we see from "great designers" on a daily basis?

so bogus. though i am glad MG is back.

MG is very talented but she's also very annoying and full of herself.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Iman used "Et tu, Brutus" in the CORRECT way....that was also funny!

Jeez I'm hooked. I love that lady. And I agree, she's "Iman, defender of the Goths"! I totally agree, even tho MG's outfit was good, it was still costume-y, and (good) goth should be anything but that.

Am loving this more and more--especially what Iman brings to the judging-- her willingness to disagree with the others. She's a little scary, but you know you're hearing what she really thinks. I wish Heidi could get a little of that.

That ruching on the butt of Carlie's dress was pretty damn bad, so I won't quarrel with the result, but it was surprising to see her go, given the quality of her prior work.

I hope MG gets a little humility to go with her second chance. And these designers really need to get over their obsession with Megan. The way they all rag on her makes me root for her to do well and outlast them all. Not that she did well this time, but at least she didn't ruche the rear end of her dress.

I wonder what Iman would have said if Lucian had sent the Goth dress down the runway. She really has taken a dislike to MG and, deserved or not, it appears to influence her. That bothers me more than her favoring Lucian.

The other three designers all liked MG's look, and Iman seemed to take it as a betrayal.

Can anyone tell me what to do if some of the parts don't run smoothly? I usually get one, but today there were three segments that were buffered to unbelievable choppiness. :( Section five was one of those affected, and that one was pivotal to seeing all the dresses.

Hope Laurie

"MG is very talented but she's also very annoying and full of herself."

I think you could substitute any of the designers' names and be spot on with that statement. And I must say that I am really tiring of them all hatin' on Meghan. If I were there I'd dope slap the lot of them and say, 'fer chrissakes, pay attention to your own designs and stop bashing other people'. Jeez, my kids are better behaved than that.

That said, I love, Love, LOVE Iman, and I could listen to that woman discuss fashion every day.

I don't understand Michael. Why would you say no to a second chance? Lack of confidence? I mean, look at MG - now she's back and competing again. I guess she didn't want it that badly, huh?

I love MG. Was so sad to see Carlie go, though. But MG coming back made up for it a bit.

"Et tu, Brutus?" LMAO! That made my day. My favorite part was the very beginning when Iman walked out on stage looking hotter than hell (take that, Miss Heidi!) and all the designers were just sitting there with their mouths hanging open, totally overwhelmed by Iman-ness!

Anonymous said...

Can we get this with Iman edited out? I keep trying to be charitable and remember that Heidi didn't do so well her first season, but this is awful. And Heidi's hair NEVER looked like it was a comb-over.

Iman was hot in that episode. Like, PERFECTION. And I love how everyone kept telling Carile how she was such a great designer and that she has a huge future ahead of her, because it's so true. I could see her Head Designer for Ralph Lauren one day.

Viva la Carlie!!!

did anyone else feel heartbroken for Steven up there? i mean, i thought the dress was the most beautiful look on the runway, and yes, it was Lucien's style, but it was a kick ass dress, and they were a team...i think he has shown 3 really great looks now, the umbrella dress, the opera dress and now this, and besides that, i just want to take care of him...

Vic said...

I think Genevieve is one of the most talented of the group, but she didn't listen to the client. In addition, she designed an ugly dress. Same goes for Carlie, who was full of excuses. She designed a hootchie cootchie dress that looked cheap and tawdry.

The true star of this show is Iman. I love it when she bares her fashion fangs.

Carlie leaving was a mistake...

Her dress was bad at the ass, but her design was nice (unlike Shernett's, which was bad all around).

And since when did the judges start eliminating people on execution? (If they did that from day one, Megan would have been gone long ago).

I don't think it's fair to judge Carlie on getting a cheap fabric...she had NUMEROUS chances to back-stab Megan...such as NOT helping her with the broken zipper, dissing her on the runway, or NOT letting her get expensive fabric.

But she didn't. And this shows her genuine character and that she doesn't need to be a bitch to get ahead in life.

If she didn't help Megan, her model would have walked down the runway with her ass hanging out...far worse than a little ruching if you ask me.

And if anyone noticed, Iman was extra nice to her when she told Carlie she didn't measure up. (unlike the other contestants that left). It is evident that even the judges knew it was sad to see such immense potential leave.

sixgables said...

Ah, but "top designer" and "nicest designer" are so very seldom the same. Carlie really is too young to win this anyway. She needs a bit more experience before she gets that much opportunity.

I was devasted to see Carlie go. I thought perhaps Shernett would be the one losing this round. Oh well. But Lucian! I love his suit! Now if he could edit like that more often, he stands a good chance winning. I adore Steven but he really needs to project more of his wonderful personality into his clothes.

I was shocked to see Carlie go but happy to see MG come back. Perhaps Carlie will reappear as well. Her auf'ing is one for the PR books.

Iman seems like she could eat small, soft children and then nonchalantly spit out the bones. She doesn't appear to have a loving, warm, caring, empathetic, or nurturing side at all. I love it for the purposes of the show. Hopefully not so in real life.

Shernett wasn't sent home, because she is one of the stronger designers. And, while I like Carlie's work, come on. Her dress was a nightmare. The same thing happened with MG in the last episode: a talented designer dropped the ball, and there was no way the judges could make up excuses to save her.

A Manifested Destiny said...

The moment Carlie picked polyester satin, I had a feeling she was a goner. It's a pain in the ass to sew, and it always looks cheap to anyone with a trained eye, no matter how well-executed the garment is. And that dress was not well-executed.

If Carlie hadn't done the ruching over the butt, however, I think Shernett would have been the one sent packing. As much as I liked the top of Carlie's dress, the back of it was straight out of the Latina party-dress shop in my old neighborhood, ca. 1989.

I don't know what Shernett was thinking. I think she's one of the strongest designers on that show, but oh, God--that dress was so 1997.

And I have mixed feelings about MG's return. On the one hand, her work is always interesting and I want to see what she will do in future challenges. On the other hand, I want to knock the smirk off her face. Yeah, Beddell can be annoying too, but he strikes me as much less smug and self-satisfied than MG.

Anonymous said...

I'm not on the MG love train. She's quite full of herself which she expresses with a shoulder shrug and sort of mumbled insouciance that only partially disguises it. I haven't been wowed by her outfits or her behavior so wasn't sorry to see her go, and not thrilled that she's back.

Shernett certainly came off as cold-blooded. I liked Carlie's designs but her dress really was awful and she can't blame it on Megan. Carlie came up with the design, she chose the fabric, she sewed it.

And Iman is both funny and full-on scary. My guess is that if Iman doesn't like your outfit, you don't have a chance in hell of winning a challenge or the competition. She will make sure of it.

Well, now that Carlie is gone and MG is back, I'm still vacillating about who I want to see in the final: Lucien, Shernett, and either MG or Bidell. I can't believe Stephen and Megan are still in this. I LOVE Iman! I love it when she butts heads with the other judges or tells off the contestants...and she does it with such panache.

Anonymous said...

So far I like PRC better than the US version because of the judges. Iman always looks gorgeous, unlike poor Heidi who at least in previous seasons was often dressed like a clown. The other Canadian judges are much hipper-looking than the US judges, who are also often really badly dressed themselves. And then we actually get to hear conversations between the Canadian judges--imagine!

Anonymous said...

PR Canada is F**cking AWESOME!! even their designs are more interesting! Now if we could just mesh the drama and designers with Heidi and Timm it would be perfect high drama/high fashion!! :) :)

For folks like me who want to watch PRC online -- check out Veoh.com. Unlike YouTube, Veoh has entire episodes, and pretty good quality streaming!

As much as i heart PRC, does anyone else get offended by the crappy titles? I hate the posey-posey fake sweing that the contestants are doing, they all look so bemused and self-aware! Even worse is Imans contribution- Shes flipping Iman, she doesn't need a catchphrase!
