Brian Bailey - Project Runway Canada
Wednesday, October 31, 2007 by Author
The Calgary Herald News has an interview with porn-stached Tim Gunnabe, Brian Bailey of PR Canada. Some choice bits:
"Bailey, like his U.S. Project Runway counterpart Tim Gunn, is a supportive, likeable, calming addition to the contestants' frantic world."
"I told them at the beginning I was going to be me," said Bailey, a 26-year veteran of the fashion game. "I'm not mean, but I am frank and upfront. They can be bitchy among themselves; that's not why I'm here."
Is the Canadian fashion industry better or worse, or is it cyclical?
"Fashion is that way, isn't it? You're always in the middle of finding your way. For one, two, three years, something is very hot, such as YSL with Tom Ford, then suddenly it takes a kick in the butt. I think Canadian fashion is the same way. Today, the public is more worldly via the Internet and the promotion of Canadian fashion. In the past 10 years we have really come full stage, for example, with L'Oreal Fashion Week, though I think we need to talk about where it's at today . . .Financially, to start out as a Canadian designer is tremendously difficult."
On Project Runway Canada, did you have any major concerns about the ability of the contestants?
"For sure, within the first minute! I think design potential is one thing but skill is another. For the show, you have to have both."
You watched the original Project Runway and others in the Project series. How does Canada's compare?
"We kick ass, let me tell ya! We kick the ass of Catwalk and the American show. I'm throwing down the gauntlet. Bring it on, Tim."
Better-quality design talent or better characters and dramas?
"I didn't want to do the show if the calibre of design wasn't met. If it was just about designer squabbling, well, I've been around that for 28 years! We need the real life, the excitement, the meltdowns -- but, more than that, we need to know these people know what they're about and don't repeat the same little detail, episode after episode."
Did you agonize over creating a memorable catchphrase? I notice you say the word "sexy" a lot: "Make it sexy" and "It's gotta be sexy."
"Being sexy or in your face grabs attention, and design is all about grabbing your attention. "Make sure it works" is kind of a Tim-ism. My favourite thing is always, and I say it to myself a lot, 'kick it up a notch.' When you think you're finished and you've reached that point where the garment looks good, go back to the iron and give it another press. When you're picking fabric, call that other supplier and look at his silks, because you really do have to constantly kick it up a notch, because someone else will have kicked it higher than you."
Is there one lesson you thought all the contestants had to learn?
"Listening is the most important thing a designer can do. Take a streetcar ride in Toronto and see what's going on. Your customer, your store, your backer, your assistants, your partner -- you need to listen. It doesn't mean you need to do, but you need to hear."

Call me kooky--- but, is that the way he always looks? Or is he dressed up like a 1970's porn star for Halloween?
Just wondering...

I am really liking Brian's mentoring style -- he is warm & diplomatic, yet still direct. I notice that he is more explicit in his technical advice than Tim is, but he doesn't interfere with the design like that human chihuahua Ben di Lisi would.
I thought the wrong group won this week (I preferred MG's group's designs) but the right person got booted. As always, hope the Boys will chime in with their favorite horses.

LOL. I like him. He knows his shit, and he seems genuine. The mustache is a bit much, though.
I loved the episode, hated the clothes they made.
Aww, fabulous interview, boys. Thanks! I like Brian a lot. He's so cool.

I noticed that too. I HATE that Project Catwalk guy.
Is everyone able to view this episode? It keeps saying "Buffering, please wait" for me.

Were you trying to watch it yesterday? We had no problem watching it last night (after trying all day; it kept saying the same thing), but we had to restart the computer and clean the cache in order for changes to take effect.
Hope that helps.

I was with Iman on that one. Disappointing. None of it rocked me. But the right team lost (ugh!) and the right designer went home, so...
Megan is such a sad sack! Are we going to have to put up with her for much longer? At least she didn't get immunity out of that challenge.
Oh hey, he's got a shop here in Toronto! I should go stalk him :)
Yup, Iman doesn't beat around the bush, does she? She tells it like it is and she was right. The designs were not that great. I was very disappointed.

HA! I think we have the best PR show! : )
It worked for me. I just finished watching it. I didn't love the episode, I guess because it was a team challenge. I don't like them.
I think Brian Bailey is very handsome and has an amazingly sexy voice, but something about his hair bothers me: Is it a toupee or just styled to look like one? I've been so busy pondering it I hadn't even noticed the porn-mustache!
The more I watch PRC, the more I love Iman and I think Brian is wonderful! But ewww - what a bunch of 'Hot Mess' walked down the runway this show!
So - Celine Dion? I tried to see what the music on the piano was, but I couldn't quite make it out.
I agree with J-yo, Brian has an amazingly sexy voice. mmmmmm good
Brian is one of Canada’s most prominent designers - So far I like him as the mentor.
I didn't really like much of anything that came down the runway. I thought the designs were boring.
I love how Iman tells everyone how wrong they are. LOL. I'm just waiting for her to say: "Are fucking kidding me? That's hideous!!" LOL.
I love his voice!
I was very disappoint with Michael cheating at the store. I'm glad she's gone. That wasn't cool.
Am loving it that the PR Canada judges are not afraid to disagree with one another. And I loved hearing Iman talking about how important it was to make it wearable. Did they forget they were supposed to be designing department store clothing?
Michael was definitely the right one to go this week. Yikes, that tunic she made was hideous.
And the way all the other designers keep ranting about why Megan isn't gone yet, it's almost making me start to root for her (but just a little).
I love love love this show. Iman and Brian are both terrific, and the judges are not bad. More time on models and fittings and that is fun.
But I'm beginning to notice that a lot more air time is given to the lowest two designers and a lot of dialog on to the negatives. Not much attention or air time has been given to the winners thusfar. Iman was right about the wearability this time, but I'd like her to gush once or twice to acknowledge the winners' work.
Damn, Iman scares the crap outta me. I think I'm going to have to start a "Save David Bowie" campaign...
@Gorgeous Things (whom, by the way, I remember from the *other* PR site before it got...well, weird) - I was thinking Anne Murray. Probably way less expensive than Celine.
OK, for serious, are we getting results on the Laura Bennet Contest any time soon?!
Brian looks way better in that photo than he does on the show.
I don't know if it's because I am used to Heidi, but I feel that Iman is a real big bitch to the designers. No?
If it is Anne Murray, then this is the wrong show ... she should be on What Not to Wear most of the time!
With the hints about High Notes, I think it is Celine ...
I think that Brian's moustache and hair are like him ... relaxed and easy going. He's almost an anti-Tim in his personal style. I'd love to see an interview with both of them. How about getting on that, T&L?
They totally photoshopped out his gut in that picture, or it's several years and pounds ago. He creeps me out--definitely has a funny uncle vibe.
Did anyone else get an Angela/Mychal/Laura vibe from the Megan/Shernett/Lucien team?

it wouldn’t hurt to compliment the designers on their work a little more.
Many people have compared Brian Bailey to Tim Gunn, in the roles they fill on their respective shows.
Bailey is an accomplished designer. He has been in the trenches for many years, and has had his share of highs and lows. The past few years have been very positive and I do not think you could chosen a better mentor than Bailey for this program.
Is he better than Tim Gunn ? I don't know , but it takes a real special talent to survive and be optimistic after all his years trading punches in the business and not be jaded toward it.
Just a programming question: Why are we suddenly able to see this on the Slice.ca website? I HATE how their website says right at the top who got booted. But, watching it in three pieces is nice.
I thought the MG collection was best. That group had all my fav designer’s, too. I think in the end it will be MG, Kendra, and Carlie.
Brian is really good at this, but nobody can do it like our boy Tim. Iman provides the best damn drama in the whole show! I love how the designers get along but the judges argue.
Megan is a mess. She reminds me of Angela, barely sliding through on other people's talents. Must go.
Overall, the designs were very disappointing.
I'll end on another program note: I wish the intro wasn't so looooong. I don't want to see Iman's fingers do that weird gesturing/pointing thing ever again.
it could also be Avril Lavigne, or Alanis Morissette, or even Shania Twain. And you know what -- I'm going with Shania. Celine's just too high up the ladder, even for this fabulous show.
I just really love how much of the technical stuff they show. Plus, have we noticed, we're not getting any of the boo-hoo backstories. And that's A-OK by me. I want the focus on the creativity and the execution and that's what we're getting. Even the drama is subliminal because that (speaking from much experience) truly is how the Canadians treat each other. I had to laugh at what Team Michael perceived to be Kendra's hissy fit. The world could use a little more hissy like that kind of hissy.
All that said, Michael was the right one to ditch, but Stephen is emerging as the King of Separates That Don't Go Together. I think I actually liked Kendra's outfit best. Neither of the other teams wowed me.
I just love Iman esp after she called Megan out on sliding by on the talent of the other 2. Michael's outfit was fug, she was the right one to go but Megan is really workin' my nerves! Unfortunately I think Stephen will be the next to go.
"I'd love to see an interview with both of them. How about getting on that, T&L?" Yes guys, can't you pull some strings or something??
Brian is awesome. I think he's a great mentor. Thanks for the interview, guys.
I kind of feel bad for Megan. I think she's talented, she just doesn't know how to handle stress.

I totally agree with 'macasism.' Brian totally icks me out, he looks like an uncle that you stay the hell away from, or a cheesy porn star (shudder). Tim has more class in his little finger than Brian has in his whole body.
He would look so much better if he shaved off that fugly-ass mustache! It ages him by 10 years.

I disagree. They're just different. They're both talented and experienced. Who cares about the damn mustache?
It's just a freaking mustache, geez.
EWWWWW!! SHAVE THE PORNSTACHE!!!
Ditch the cheap toupee too.
It's interesting to see that team challenges suck north of the border as well. No one came off well in this episode.

Well, according to my Tivo, next week we won't be seeing Celine or Shania or Avril. It's going to be an opera singer, Measha Brueggergosman. I confess that this Canadian's never heard of her, but then I've only been to the opera a couple of times.
I'm just relieved it's not Celine.
Oooh...just found the opera singer's website. She has an amazing voice. In terms of the challenge, though, she is definitely more of a full-figured woman than most of the contestants are probably used to designing for. Should be interesting...
What do you want to bet this "full-figured" challenge will work out better than the "Everyday Woman" challenge?
I find many of your commenters here actually knowing what they talk about . The blogs at PRCanada are littered with stupid comments from numbskulls that know nothing about design and it seems the majority want this reduced to a popularity contest.
As for Megan, everyone is jumping on her lack of sewing skills, but don't realize she has an advanced degree from Parsnips, and has worked extensively in NYC before heading to Shanghai.
PRunway in the US feature more mature designers making for a much larger market and therefore, differences are certain. Stakes are higher. All in all, the calibre is much higher in the US. Some of these CDN kids don't even know the score yet.
mary lynn, you might want to include a spoiler warning for posts that reveal anything about upcoming episodes. Personally, I don't care, but some people might.
Hi macasism...you're right, I should have noted it was a spoiler. Sorry about that.
He looks like Dan Ackroyd's gay little brother. But he's cute, and I like his aplomb.
Brian's kind of a Canadian Tim Gunn, but I'm not hating him. Sometimes he can be condescending, but on the whole his mentoring is sound. The mustache has GO TO GO, though. It makes him look like Perez Hilton.
"Measha Brueggergosman"
Hate to be an ignoramus, but, WHO??
Seriously..."the pride of Canada"?? I really thought Celine.
And isn't it cute how the newbies get all bent out of shape when we make fun of people? Get used to it people. Read the tagline. They cut. We rip. We ALL rip.
That Iman is one nasty bitch....every week I think she is going to take somebody out with that pointer finger of hers. She is all about Lucien, every week its more obvious.
I think the Canadians are much more supportive of each other than the American designers are. They really do help each other out.
"Be quiet, or my mustache will eat your beard."
I am loving Iman. She doesn't scare me at all. Whoever said we had to rescue David Bowie is a right nutter. And if she favors Lucian it's for good reason. His clothes are stunning. I'd buy them right now. Ditto Biddell and MG. I think I like them more than I have the winning Project Runway designers in the States (I'm American, so it's not home country bias.)
I like Brian better as a mentor than Tim Gunn, but I'm in love with Tim Gunn as a personality and a style expert.
They're all very chummy, aren't they? With the exception of the way they act towards Megan, which I can understand due to her bad sewing skills, they all seem to love each other and want the others to do well. When one of them is aufed they all gather around weeping and hugging. Even Brian comes in and gives them each a big smooshy hug.
There is a bit of a creepy uncle vibe about his style, though, I agree. He kind seems like he should be a character on South Park.
Megan should have told them about how Poiret couldn't sew either. Of course they could say that she's "no Poiret."
And who the fuck is this Measha Brueger-hoo-ha anyway? The pride of Canada? If so you've definitely been keeping her to yourselves.
Seriously..."the pride of Canada"?? I really thought Celine.
Suzanne, as a Canadian I can say with full authority that Celine is far from the pride of Canada. We managed to ship her off to Vegas for a while but ack, she may be back.
