Hard Women and Soft Men

It would be really politically incorrect for us to make Asian hooker jokes, wouldn't it?

But kittens...

CAN YOU BLAME US?!

Yow. EVERYTHING was wrong on this. The color is too hard, the leather is too heavy and the skirt looks poorly executed.

And there doesn't appear to have been a moment's reflection on the fact that Chloe's a very short girl with a big chest. Those poor girls are pushed up and strapped in to within an inch of their lives. This is what it it looks like when breasts cry.

And wow, is this look wrong for Chloe. Look at the cute funky girl with the curves on the right. They look like before and after pictures on a makeover show where they take a hardened airport lounge hostess and teach her that yes, dreams really can come true as they give her a better haircut and take her shopping in a mall for clothes that don't "age" her.

Kara? We'll be standing over here waiting for your men's line to launch.

Seriously, that shit is HOT. She's got a naturally funky approach to design that translates really well into stylish and wearable men's wear.

Okay, maybe the pants aren't for everyone (they're certainly not for us), but they look great on Santino. The whole outfit looks great on him. Much like so many have with Sears, we've come to see, as Nina put it, "The softer side of Santino," which admittedly is probably going too far. He's not a kitten, for god's sake.

It's the shirt that we covet. It fits him perfectly and it's tailored in such a way as to give him broader shoulders and bigger arms and who don't want that? All in all, a great job (and we don't believe Santino had anything to do with it) and once again, what could have been a sure win for Kara was outclassed by someone else putting a truly superior garment out.

I think this episode is where Daniel's lack of real world experience started to show. And while I thought the pink shirt and the pinstripe vest Chloe did were too cute, I thought Kara should have won this one. I thought her design was more original and was so right for Santino despite being completely different from what he usually wore, not to mention, as you metioned, how flattering the fit and proportions were. But while we may disagree about who should've won, I'm sure we all agree about who should've lost, which I'm sure is forthcoming.

I adored Kara's outfit. It really is Santino, remixed. And Santino needs to shut the f*ck up about making the outfit. KARA MADE IT!! NOT YOU!!

And I know you guys watch "What Not To Wear." Me too. lol

Now Dan's dress for Chloe I think is a matter of taste. It would look better on me than on her, that's what I think. If the skirt didn't suck, I'd totally rock that outfit.

Kara FTW! I adored her outfit. I still maintain that she had a bigger challenge in really improving Santino's look, than Chloe did with Nick. Innovative, funky, and well made. LOVE!

Danny V. took a few days off and who can blame him. "oh yeah, I have immunity." Poor, Chloe, tho.

Santino, you ASSSS!!! Kara made that outfit, not you. And she did a great job. Either she or Chloe could have won this one.

When are you getting to the jumpsuit of shame? I can hardly contain myself anymore, and I'm guessing I'm not alone. Freddie F*king Leiba my ass!

Kara wuz robbed! And hey, guys, she already has some unisex/guy t's on her site (but nothing like the polo she did here).

Like everyone else, I thought Kara's work was awesome--despite the fact that she had to deal with micro-manipulator Santino. Nick was easygoing and a good client; Santino was a nightmare! That should've given Kara even more points in my book, especially in light of what *she* had to wear.

Why couldn't you have addressed Kara and Santino's work in one post? Afraid your reader's heads would explode from the contrast of magnificent and fugly?

"micro-manipulator"

What a great description!

I still having stopped getting upset over the results of this episode. Grrrrrrr.

Any ensemble that ages a woman 10 years is just plain bad fashion...

Kara was robbed- she had the hardest job by far, and she managed to make him actually look presentable.

I would wear those pants in a heartbeat. I look for and fail to find those pants every time I go to the store.

I thought gay men in fashion were supposed to be GOOD at dressing women's bodies; the clowns on this show are just tragic. Garment after garment comes down the runway with compressed, lumpen boobs, waists a foot off target if there is a waist at all. It's really ridiculous. This dress for Chloe was appalling, an insult to her.

Santino actually looked good here...the makeover was him without changing who is as a person. The Santino aesthetic was still there, but better! Kara did a great job, despite Santino always annoying her and telling her what she should do. Overall, Kara's look was the best as it fulfilled the challenge the most. I didn't like Daniel V's look for Chloe, although by his own admission, he wasn't feeling too confident about the look, so credit goes to him for that. Santino's could have been better if it was constructed better. I didn't like Nick's look for Daniel too much either because the suit looked too feminine and not sewn well at all. Chloe's look was also a winner, so between Chloe and Kara it was hard to pick a winner for this callenge because their looks were both so well done. And yes, Daniel was very lucky he had immunity. Although he is a good designer, it was good that he was taken to task for his look.

Were there any immunity challenges is season three? If not, it was because of Daniel. As much as I loved a few of his garments, he should have been kicked out on his ass for this travesty. He should never have been allowed to practice fashion design again after this AND his gay card should have been revoked.

Santino looked fantastic! Without taking anything away from Kara, however, I think Santino could get a little credit for giving her a few great suggestions and for totally selling the look. Yes, his constant input was annoying but he did pick the fabric for the pants and he suggested the plaid lining for the collar of the polo, which was perfect.

Nothing to add here. Agree with you bitches 100% on both garments.

I want Chloe's knockers. Asian girls aren't supposed to have 34D
s, dammit. :-)

Poor Chloe indeed! She is a beautiful young girl with a great figure, how difficult could it be to dress her (not to mention the styling choices *puke icon*)? She looks like she should be sitting on a barstool in a cheap lounge bitterly muttering about money ,men, and lost chances.
Santino looks great. He has a great body too, but if he was a difficult customer they should have given her extra points. Was Kara at least in the top two?

Oddly enough, the women were the only ones who could handle the menswear challenge. Isn't that weird?

Didn't Santino tell Kara he "always wanted a pair of madras pants"? When La Garcia giggled over them I had to think that Santino's input helped Kara's design process. I'm not a Santino fan per se but I do htink that he's a little more innovative than Kara. (sorry, Kara, I love your stuff too...)

LOVED Daniel V until this episode. It kinda reminds me of what happened to Michael Knight...going for sexy and taking it into the gutter...

what a pair of long arms santino has...

Man I as I watch this rerun I am getting angry that Kara was overlooked. This was an awesome look for Santino. And as Vera said, this is where we start watching DV decline. But it's also the period where the Santino personality really takes hold and it becomes a scorched earth for the producers. I think I started to loose my enthusiasm after Nick left ... and then Andre.

Kara's makeover for Santino was excellent. And of course his input helped her. We know that Kara can often be a victim of second guessing. Tim had mention that she would need an entourage just to maintain her confidence.

Knowing what a micro-manager Santino can be, his input of course would help Kara keep focused and not waffle. However it is very presumptious of him to claim that he designed the outfit she made and that he was the one responsible for it. Let us recall, Santino took some of credit for Nick's barbie design, even suggesting that Nick wouldn't not have won if not for his help.

The bottom line is whether or not his claim was true, he should have focused on his own oufit and not so much on hers. At no time do we hear either of them say Kara continually coming to him for help.

And as for Daniel, he is so lucky to have had immunity. I am so glad Heidi called him out that she thought his design was the worst. What's most interesting is how people comment on the low quality of the dress. The leather bodice is equally badly made. I know many people work with leather garments and I can tell you straight out the fit and the style he created was all wrong for her torso.

I thought Heidi's claim that Daniel would have been aufed was ridiculous. I really don't think this is that bad, certainly not falling-apart jumpsuit or power lesbian officewear bad. He deserved to be reprimanded, but I really don't think he would've been out.

And yeah, Kara's was pretty damn good.

Why do people keep calling it "luck" that Daniel had immunity. He knew it going into the challenge!!!!! Hello! If he hadn't had it, he would have tried harder and come up with something better.

Jeeze!

As I wrote in another post, not so much Asian hooker as dime-store dominatrix. That was truly awful.

Still think Santino should have gone bye-bye.

I love Kara's. I could so wear that. Daniel's was just bad bad bad.

By the way, is that really leather? Because it looks the Naugahyde interior of a 1985 Cutlass Supreme.

Seriously. I think Kara stole those pants from Bob Hope.

Kara did a really great job, although I'm personally not a fan of the plaid pants for men look. If the judges had picked her for the win instead of Chloe, I'd have had no quarrel with it. Amazing how the two women, designing for men, were the only ones who came through this week, and they both tackled pretty ambitious projects.

Daniel's look for Chloe does look more like a makeover in reverse. To me, this look says: "newly-divorced, nearly-senior woman who thinks the fastest route to husband #5 is to show up at a singles dance dressed like a sexpot." And poorly made to boot.

I will give him a little leeway for the conceptual difficulty of his challenge--Chloe's not so much in need of a makeover. It may be easy to make her look good in styles she already wears, but how do you give her a look that works well for her but is still completely new without being costumey?

Milena Nelson said...

Is the the episode where Santino has his best line ever? "Are these space pants, because my ass is out of this world."

I laughed my ass off.

I had forgotten just how bad the Chloe dress was. Yes, Santino did ask for madras and he had some input into his design as did all the designers/models. Santino can't help but think he was responsible for the win. Kara still rocked it but Nick's outfit was just enough better to get the win.

"This is what it it looks like when breasts cry."

After seeing that I read the rest of the post humming "When Doves Cry."

Were there any immunity challenges is season three?

Didn't Jeffrey have immunity when he won the couture challenge?

There are other ultra-femme looks that Daniel could have tried. What about Chloe in a Dior "new look" from the 1950's?
Kara should have won.

Chloe's out fit looks exactly like the outfit worn by the woman running the Miss Chinatown pagent for Chinese New Years in San Francisco this year.

Daniel's outfit was bad and so was his attitude when the judges told him so.

Watch while my admiration for Kara goes way up. Watch it pass my admiration for Daniel V. on its way down. Don't get me wrong, I liked Dan. He made some pretty garments, and he was a decent sort, or maybe it was the other way 'round. But he failed big time here. Like you said, wrong for Chloe in just about every conceivable way. And I thought that he lucked out getting Chloe -- attractive, easy-going and professional, surely she was the model client.

And there's Kara, with the anti-Chloe -- a ginormous troll with a permanent scowl on his face who thinks he's the star of the Santino show -- and she rocks the challenge. Poor underappreciated Kara. I love ya, babe!

Somewhere around this episode is when I started seriously disliking DV, design and TV personality-wise. Some serious poor taste going on right there. And yeah, the Kara-Santino creation didn't get enough credit for this one.

I definitely grew to like Kara more and more over the course of the season - I feel like she really pulled it out when it mattered--toward the end. It's really a pity, because she did some great work this season but I think it went unnoticed probably because she wasn't able to sell it on the runway - she lacked confidence and the ability to articulate her inspirations and goals. She should have won this challenge, and the previous challenge... ah well - I do love Chloe, though, so no big complaints.

Anonymous said...

kara definitly should have won this challenge. She took a traditional preppy look and updated and made it funky to fit Santino's POV and aesthetic. It worked and he loved it.
Chloe on the other hand looked like she was in the Laotian touring company of Sweet Charity.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Yep, Kara & Chloe were undoubtedly neck & neck for the win in this episode. Kara's garment was true to her esthetic AND to her client's personality (samewith Chloe). They both made their clients look like themselves, only better.

On the other hand, what Daniel V. did to poor Chloe was cause not just for aufing but for banishment. Siberia. And Santino's jumpsuit, sigh. The only thing that kept it from being a complete eyesore is the fact that Kara does have such a good figure.

Anonymous said...

Huge disappointment! Considering Daniel's ability and Chloe's beauty I was expecting something extraordinary. Instead a 'ho (can I say that?) in a huntin' vest came down the runway. Kara's take on Santino style, on the other hand, was breathtaking! The hat, the pants, the multi layering of the shirt, everything was bril. The Hubby came in the room while I was watching and said, "Where can I buy THAT!" Kara really stepped up her game from brunt of Shetangi to true designer. Sorry the judges had another agenda else she was on her way to Bryant Park (not as a decoy).
