Congratulations Nick!

Quickie recap: The designers are told that they'll be designing a look for a global star and fashion icon, only to find out that their client is Barbie. The stakes are raised when they're told that the winning look will be used for a limited edition My Scene Barbie.

You can read Tim's take on this episode here and listen to his podcast here.

Girl, that's not just fierce, that is SUPAFIERCE!

Who didn't think this challenge was right up Nick's alley? He's got the Barbiest aesthetic out of anyone there and exactly the right sense of drama and color she needs. This dress was PERFECT.

This one's all about the fabric choices. He made exactly the right choice for the "client" and exactly the right choice for the dress. He knew this would look great in miniature, sitting on a shelf and he was right.

We say that not to take away from the design, which was also perfect. Great proportions and almost flawless execution. Flowy, sassy but not too sexy, girly and above all, fun. This isn't really meant to be a real world dress. It's every inch a fashion doll's dress.

And there isn't a doubt in our minds that he played with a lot of Barbies as a kid (if not as an adult) because only a serious Barbie lover would think of adding the kinds of accessories that every little girl goes apeshit over, like the ribbon shoes...

and the "Rhoda" scarf. We could not agree more with this win. Nick darling? FIERCE!

Wheee!!! I want Uncle Nicki to come over for Christmas! God so many of these fab designers have little girl muses, neices, god-daughters, etc. I envy those tots because come teen-years, they will be workin' with the masters.

Oh my gosh! I almost didn't notice the ad for Nick's Barbie next to the post. How cute! I only wish the doll had Tarah's beautiful skin.

BTW, you guys are absolutely right about this outfit. Gorge!

One of the greatest moments of PR.
Congratulations, Nick! I love you!!

I love the fabric, the hat, the sandals...everything!

Tarah and Nick - Best combo on the show! Fabulous dress, Nick ( I know you read this blog)!

Best dress, without a doubt! Tarah looks like a life-size version of the Barbie doll.

Oh P.S. Kudos on the "Watch What Happens" interview, gals! You two are just uber-cute and Tom, that was you talking most of the time, wasn't it?

It's true, it's true. This was so far and away superior to anything else that it was obvious to anyone who every played with Barbie or, like me, has a daughter who, at one time, had 19 of them. And, yes, the accessories were very important, though I started to throw away the shoes the moment they came in the house. Step on a few of those in the dark in your bare feet and you'll know what I mean!

Perfection from Uncle Nick. What a happy episode!

THE FIRST SCREENSHOT OF TARAH HAS A STRANGE FACE EXPRESSION?
CAN YOU GUYS CHANGE ONE :)?
BECAUSE WE ALL LOVE TARAH!

"Watch What Happens"?! NOOOOO!!!! You've crossed over to the dark side? !?! [insert generalized sounds of uncontrollable sobbing, weeping and garment-rending] Oh, the humanity.......

Perfection indeed. And one of the best episodes ever! It had everything. Kara & Lupe fighting over the Nervous Nellie award. (That would be Kara--Lupe gets an altogether different award). The Daniel Franco shuffle. Raymundo's tearful balls of steel. Kara's obsessive search for the missing hat. So much blog-worthy material here. How will you guys ever choose?

oh nicki, what a fine thing you have created. and the shoes ~ you're right. there's nothing quite like barbie shoes. little wedge things to put on those ever-arching feet, high heeled sandals, so many barbie shoes. yea nick!!

I heart Uncle Nick.

My Barbie never had a dress like that. She always looked like Jackie Kennedy.

I adore Nick. And with this challenge, he seemed to be the only one who actually thought about the dress in the box, on the shelf.

But I disagree that the ribbon shoes would be the best accessory for Barbie. The best accessory for Barbie would be an anatomically correct Ken.

Can you also give us pics of the dolls?

The thing that amazed me most about Nick's was how he seemed to miniaturize the fabric pattern for his doll. I can't figure out how he did it.

Some of the other designers made great miniature versions, too; in fact, some of the doll outfits were much better than the full-size outfits.

Yep, Nick did a great job on this. (Wow, what a contrast to his s&m hooker from the last challenge--I guess that shows range!) This one was cute, cute, cute. Not to mention fun.

Is Nick going to be the next designer from PR at Mattel dressing Barbie? I believe Nick would be great at designing Red Carpet Barbie!

loved it. And yes all little girls love ribbon shoes. And the rhoda scarf! You nailed it. (Nick did too)

I also <3 Uncle Nick-so much that in a fit of gay, gay, gay enthusiasm, I pre-ordered the frickin' doll right after the episode was over. Honestly, I've never felt more like a big ole' mo in my life! Except maybe the summer I saw Truth or Dare ten times.

Oh yeah, and the whole "sex with guys" thing.

Uncle Nick, I love you! This is one of the best PR epi's ever.

Watching PR S2 over again makes Top Design look sooooo boring. When are we gonna get S4? Will it ever happen?

YAAAAY the Barbie episode! I was looking forward to you bitches delving into this one. This has to be my favorite PR episode of all time.

Here's a better shot of the doll.

Ok, I'm now officially a Gotham Tomato fan....

truely one of the more memorable designs in PR history.

I'm one of the bazillions who ordered the doll right away too. My kids used to play with Barbies, but were both well into their late teens when this episode ran.

Still, my kid has Uncle Nick's Barbie on her shelf, and shows it off to everyone who comes over. Sometimes the shrieking is at such a pitch that only my dog can hear it.

I loved the tiering of the layers in the skirt. I'm not a big Barbie-maniac but thought this one was the cutest one ever.

eric3000 said...

Thanks for the better shot of the doll! I was wrong about the fabric. Now I'm wondering if they showed a picture of the final production doll during the episode. I'll have to go back and check.

I agree the dress is fabulous, and so is Tarah. But does anyone else think she looks a bit like a man in that ridiculous wig?

This is the single best challenge design created from all 3 seasons, IMO.

He nailed it.

Uncle Nick's design was Fabulous AND Supafierce!! He totally "got" his client, and much deserved his win

I too "heart" Uncle Nick! He's still one of my fav PR designers

Awww, that's when I fell in love with "uncle" Nick. Best design and one the best challenge ideas ever.

Oh boys, I'm loving these pictures. Thank you so much.

May I also point out how hard it is to keep ribbon twisted around ones knees? I tried that once for a Halloween costume and it was a disaster. So, kudos to not only a great outfit but a great FUNCTIONAL outfit.

this is my favorite design challenge EVER, cause i love how Santino pouts and pouts and pouts about not winning it!

Anonymous said...

This is where I totally fell in love w/ Uncle Nick and just KNEW he was going to win it all! My husband loved that Barbie so much he went out and bought 4-- 1 for each of our 3 daughters.
I didn't get 1.

I still have my Uncle Nick My Scene Barbie displayed in the box on my desk at work...thereby cementing my co-workers thoughts that I am a loon!

Great job, Nick!"

Hilarious!! You go, girl!

I LOVE the colors Nick used, he is still absolutely one of my top 5 favorite designers from all three seasons combined.
I love his personality too, he's emotional, proud and sweet all at the same time. HOORAY Uncle Nick!!!

Great job by Nick.

Greater job by Gotham Tomato. You absolutely crack me up.

By the way do you know if Barbie comes with Ken ?

No, she fakes it with Ken and she comes with GI Joe.

Padumbum.(rimshot)

Ok, I apologize, that was old and bad, but I just had to say it.

Nick is a hottie (oh, and he's BF too), and that outfit is absolutely perfect. Congratulations, Nick!

Gorgeous. Just gorgeous. The more I see it, the more I like it. It's a perfect Barbie outfit--very very hip without an ounce of tawdry. The "Rhoda scarf" would have looks absurd anywhere else; here it's the cherry on the sundae. Perfect, perfect, perfect.

Nick, I only have one question. Having worn ballet flats with ribbons and crossover Greek sandals, I have to know: did you frickin' glue those straps on Tarah?! They're just sublime. Fantabulous. But I could never make it 10 feet without a puddle of ribbon at my ankles. How did you do it?!

Roxy said...

An absolutely gorgeous outfit in both versions! And you're absolutely, little girls go apeshit for ribboned shoes... I'd have killed for one as a kid.

But best of all was Santino's face when he realized he hand't won. Priceless! The guy manages to look outraged he hasn't won a challenge even when he's on the fricking chopping block!
