AND IT'S PEANUT FOR THE WIN!

Thursday, October 19, 2006 by

Congratulations to Jeffrey Sebelia for winning
Project Runway Season 3!

So, how about that one, hunh? DRAMA! SCANDAL! REDEMPTION! It was like a 19th century novel except with more sequins. Honestly? We saw this one coming and while Jeffrey's vision is largely not to our tastes, he is without a doubt a very talented designer and we look forward to seeing what he does next.

This is undoubtedly a controversial decision and some are saying they'll never watch the show again, but we feel the need to remind you all of our patron saint's favorite phrase: chacun à son goût. And y'know? This is nothing new for PR. Plenty of people were pissed that Kara Saun or Daniel V. didn't win. If PR runs for another 20 seasons, that'll be 20 years of pissed-off fans who keep coming back. For us, it's less about who wins it and more about spending time with fabulous people creating beautiful things (along with the occasional not-so-fabulous people and/or not-so-beautiful things). It's about the process and the people in the process. Jeffrey wouldn't have been our pick, but we have no problem with the decision, if for no other reason than it's practically a certainty that all of the final four will be moving to new phases in their careers within the next year. We wish them all well.

Now, girls? We are exhausted. We stopped by a friend's place tonight and hung out for a couple hours before heading out to a fabulous finale party. We'll be back after we sleep it off to dissect this episode to within an inch of its life, but for now, we're heading to bed. Here's a couple pictures from our night:

Oh, we have SO MUCH to tell y'all.

Is it just me, or does Jeff look sick in those viewing party pictures? Seriously. Does he have the flu?

for goodness sakes, brush mr. sandman from your eyes and update us all!! i've been refreshing your page all morning waiting for the dish!

OMG the withdrawals from daily PR recaps are starting already ... WAKE UP PRGayBoys and start the dishing already!! ;-)

I think the time that the PRgay boys could be using to write is instead being spent deleting posts.

anyway, I was OK with Jeffrey's win (though I thought Uli's was a better overall collection). But I was OK with it.

Until I read his BravoTV interview this morning. So sad and disappointed now at its utter lack of graciousness. How many bridges did he manage to burn with that interview?

I'm looking forward to your full update.

But what about that Walmart s**t? I sincerely hope none of the designers are seduced by that evil company.

So Very Jealous Of You Two!
I Wish I Could Have Sepent The Finale Night With Laura!

Other Than That I'm A Very Upset PR Fan ... Laura Is My Favorite But Uli Should Have Won Last Night ... Jeffery Is Not On The Top Of My List ... His Clothes Are Nice But As A Person He Really Kinda Well ... He Sucks!

Thanks For All The Laughs This Season ...!

Two questions.

Why did Laura drop the red numbers from her show? The long dress with the beaded front slit and the red lace jacket and charcoal/black skirt on the form were beautiful!

Maybe you could blog professional ice skating during PR's down time? It has everything, lousy judging, fabulous and disastrous costumes and criteria that can be debated till the cows come home! Not to mention the Kiss and Cry booth! I think it would be fun to hash this sport out.

Congratulations on what looked like a fabulous evening! Can't wait to hear the gossip and who all was there. Thanks for hosting a wonderful party here, I've had a great time!

Sorry, have to correct my last comment. I meant blogging AMATEUR ice skating, not professional. The events that lead to the Olympics.

Thanks! Brian

I bet Jeffrey will take the Jay route & "pass" on the INC noose, and use the exposure to get a proper investor & make his own g*dd*mn clothes. Which turned out brilliantly for Jay, while a little slow, his line fashion week was amazing and all his own. Go Jeffrey.

After a day of work, getting back to my bf's home and keep working with a friend on her non-profit project while eating a North Beach Pizza (best in town - SF,CA),we finally make it to watch PR.
I have to say (and I am blushing-in-pink right now) it is my first time... I mean, my first season.
And I loved it. Not with juvenile passion but in a very mature, relaxed and contemplative pose.
"Peanut" is good, very good. And deserves what he got.
But Uli..... Mon petite Berlinesse!
I was not sure about her outcome (she was so Miamee). But the collection was greeeeeeeeat.
Dissapointed with Michael's.
And Laura's was undeniably impressive in quality, although it lacked variety for my taste.
Uli's was my favorite.

Now all this would've been one more TV show. Except that in the middle of the night I wake up from a dream.
In the dream I was in bed, and not alone.

It was not pale-toes Timothy who I was sharing the bed with.

Not my Michael.

Not even Peanut or Malan...

NINA GARCIA was in my arms!! OMG!!
And she was sweet and soft, with her hair over me, soflty whispering in my ear... And I liked it!
I think I will have to dump my bf and go to get her.
Nina, I am going after you, My Love!!

Ok, I have to ask. I've watched only missed two episodes of the show (the first one and the dog show one) but have religiously watched all the others and have caught reruns of most. WTF is all this misogynist crap coming from? I don't recall the "feminazi" comment or any female bashing from Jeffrey at all. And no, the stroke comment towards Angela doesn't count. Yes, it was extreme and uncalled for, but saying that was an attack towards women is stretching it.

Anonymous said...

I foresaw Jeffrey's win with the editing of the last show - trying to make it look as if though he wasn't very popular and that Michael and Uli were the favorites to win.

And I think that is what makes me angry the most. Not that Jeffrey won; but his win seems a lot more manufactured than both Chloe and Jay's wins on previous seasons. Considering how much Tim Gunn goes on about the honesty and integrity of the show, it was very disappointing.

Jeffrey may be a talented designer, but through the course of the challenges, he had a track record of Wendy Pepper. He won on some challenges, and became very close to being eliminated on others. By the time the runway show came around in Season 1, everybody knew that there was no chance in hell of Wendy Pepper winning. But, this season, Jeffrey winds up coming out on top?

I congratulate him on his win. I simply think that there was a lot of producer/production involved with it, and that if he was on a different season; he would have been auf'ed a lot sooner.

Anonymous said...

To the answer the question about the feminazi and stroke comment. The feminazi comment was made by Jeffrey when the other male contestants (Vincent, especially) were talking about Angela. I think it was the Miss America challenge?

Anyway, he said she was a feminazi.

He made the comment about hoping Laura would have a stroke. I think it was the same show where he imitated her talking by quacking. (As an aside, that always struck me as so ironic because I had just finished telling my husband that Jeffrey reminded me of a duck. Next, what do you know -- Jeffrey started quacking!)

I'm sure others can fill in the blanks.

Anonymous said...

Many people post about how awful Jeffrey was, and it's true: sometimes he was. He did make the unforgivable "feminazi" comment, and was dismissive of other people. As time went on he came across more and more as a wounded little boy, but that's not an excuse for the mean and careless comments.

What I don't get, however, is that so many people who criticize Jeffrey also hold Laura up as the shoulda-been winner! Sheesh, Laura was constantly shown putting down other people's work, rolling her eyes, making dismissive remarks about people's designs or workmanship. Apparently it was okay for her to criticize ad nauseum, but the one time she was criticized--by the judges, no less--she fell apart.

Let's be fair: if personality is supposed to be factor (which of course it's not) then neither should have won.

Okay, here is THE one reason that Jeffrey should have won (IMO) -- he made his long-suffering Mama proud. Knowing that, makes it much better.

From Andy's interview with him:
"FUNNY THAT YOU BRING UP YOUR MOM .... IT WAS SO EMOTIONAL AFTER YOU WON FOR EVERYONE WHO WAS THERE. HOW DID YOUR MOM REACT? HOW HAS THE SHOW BEEN FOR YOUR RELATIONSHIP?
It's been amazing. I can't tell you how many holidays my mom came to visit me in rehab or had to put her house up in order to get me out of jail only to be afraid I wouldn't show up. It was so great to be able to celebrate an accomplishment that is a reflection of all that's good. My winning, being sober, my new family and their support and love, the support I get from my parents -- everything. It is a personification of many great things."

Why does Laura Bennett's link on the main page go the Louis Vuitton website? Is it a joke? Is she working LV? And the real burning question: did she fit all her necessary clothes and shoes in that one dinky little LV suitcase we saw her carrying? That thing had room for a change of underwear, a nightie, and a toothbrush!

Anonymous said...

Oops, of cours she's working LV; what I meant was, is she working for LV?

i don't care what anyone says, nothing laura ever said to anyone compares to jeffrey making some snide remark about angela's mom having difficulty walking. he also referred to laura's pregnancy as "gross" among lots of other totally-below-the-belt remarks.

laura was forthright with her opinions - somehow that makes her nasty and bitchy. we can't deal with a strong, smart, glamourous, well-off woman speaking her mind...but people fall over themselves apologizing for jeffrey's inexcusable behavior.

television without pity goes back and recaps shows they missed first run, please do it for runway one and two! it would be a wonderful winter!

Anonymous said...

I am utterly disgusted.... I saw no innovation in Jeffery's line what so ever, it's more than evident that he's a fan of Gwen Stefani and Heatherette....

Laura was the clear winner here... She took 8K and made it look like a million bucks...

She was auf'd because her designs clearly cater to a more sophisticated audience, not the tasteless teeny-boppers that endlessly see in the tabloids....

It was so WONDERFUL to be rooting for Jeffrey last night, pulling for the underdog, the whipping boy, the hated and despised .... and see him exonerated and ultimately triumphant!

I went to sleep on a cloud of bliss. Gad was indeed in his heaven and all was right in the world. It feels so good to know you are right in the face of unrelenting negativism and to have that vidication.

I am so HAPPY for Jeffrey. He deserved to WIN. It's a design contest NOT a Popularity contest. Thank goodness the judges and designers kept it about the designs this year. Jeffrey will be the Darling of LA Entertainment and Fashion news and next year when we visit him, he'll be having a party next to his spacious house with a swimming pool, while Bon Jovi, Steven Tyler,Kid Rock and Lenny Kravits are hanging around the pool giving comments to the PR producers about how happy they were and how long deserved Jeffrey's success was in coming. Go Jeffrey you really ROCK!

Can't wait to hear about your evening.

To Anon Brian:

Much earlier today, you gave an explanation for Jeffrey's win that pointed out the marketability of his collection, in that it was mostly separates, unlike the other designers' OFW collections. Thank you for taking the time to add that perspective -- it made far more sense than all of the "innovative", "edgy", etc., explanations, added together. Although I much preferred Uli's work last night -- and I'll die a Laura fan -- at least his win makes a little more sense now.

Speaking of marketability,in a way, Jeffrey's appeal is, to me, primarily the 15 - 25 yo set, as was mentioned earlier. INC and Bravo's sponsors certainly aren't complaining that he won. Both believe that his win will increase their customer/viewer base in that age bracket, moreso than the others would. Michael had a real shot at it but his OFW collection was weak compared to his previous work.

for some reason i can not get laura's first design on the runway out of my mind. the camel colored t-neck short simmery it's a totally feminine knockout of a dress.

i have been humming "dancing queen" all day long just thinking about that number.

why is it the most understated design(s) is always the one(s) that get overlooked?

Anonymous said...

Lucky Bitches!!! I'm not surprised though, you should definitely be there.

Anonymous said...

How many birds had to die for Laura's collection? Feather's? How very Mrs. Howell. The 4th one down the runway with the giant, poofy corsage thingy was a horror.

Love love LOVED it when Michael Kors said "Sooo much Beading! So much hand work. Did you really do this all yourself? Really? Reeeeallly????"

Laura looked sooooo uncomfortable "well, ... ahem ... not all at once ... you know ..." and the irony was almost too delicious to be believed.

Credit to Jeffrey that he never questioned her ability to accomplish such a feat -- without help from, at least, her designer husband -- But leave it to the Dutchess. LOLOLOL

Love you MK!!

"karmakarmakarmakarma, karma chameleon ...."

Today has been GRRRRRRRRREAT!

Prior to watching the finale I thought that Micheal should win, but they were right about him still having some stuff to learn. However, I'm disappointed that Jeffery won. I didn't love the collection and he went over budget on top of that. Granted he took stuff away, but he knew the rules before he showed up. I think Uli's collection was the most wearable.

Operakatz said...

Based just on the runway collections, which stand on their own and really don't relate to the competition performances, I have no problem with Jeffrey's win. But I do have a problem that he wasn't eliminated early on. #1 atrocity: the Miss USA "gown" from hell. Why that wasn't in the bottom 3 is beyond me...talk about beyond unflattering and fugly and not listening to the client (early trend?) and 1000% inappropriate for the event the dress was intended. #2 the horrific nun-suit sack-from-hell he inflicted on Angela's mother. Downright vengeance-designing. The client was NOT happy. NOT comfortable. He completely failed that challenge.

Anonymous said...

Actually, anonymous, Jeffrey is now saying that he was suspicious of Laura's doing all the work herself. He said her Mom was living with her for 2 months to take care of the kids and since she taught her how to sew...

Anonymous said...

But he did exactly what Laura didn't: kept his mouth shut, let the chips fall as they may, and let the judges decide. Look how that worked out for him. That was noble. That was sportsmanship. That was adult.

Funny how th ejudges (who i believe were not made privy to any of the "scandle" going on) never questioned Jeffrey's workmanship. They questioned Laura's.

I'm sorry, but the irony, the sheer, incredible irony, of how things turned out - Jeffrey falsely accused, vindicated, victorious - Laura now under a veil of suspicion. It's all overwhelming.

Jeffrey deserves every reward and blessing coming to him.

I am soooo Jealous. You both are so lucky to meet and be w/ the final four. Of course they equally were lucky to meet yall. I really want to meet Laura mainly cause she seems so much a person I would have as a friend and also I grew up in New Orleans and am about her age. Like any 2 people from Nawlenz we would first ask where did you go to high school and what neighborhood did you live.
Now Jeffery really wasn't my choice. I can't see really most women wearing his clothes. I am surprised at how nice and un Uli ish some of Uli's pieces were. I of course love Laura's so elegant. Micheal's I was very disppointed in. However he is young has talent and I am sure will go far.

Anonymous said...

Please!!! Could it be more evident that the show is contrived. Jeffrey is not a particularly likeable person but he would have deserved to win if he had shown 12 great pieces, like say Uli did. I will watch Season 4 but for now, I AM OVER IT!!!

Go T & L!!! Now, get your beauty rest and then spill it! That picture of ya'll and THE Laura in front of the painting with the floating head on a stick (WTF?) almost puts one into another dimension when viewed! Whoa! Just goes with the the entire surreal night!

Of course you both are in the "inner circle"....your FABULOUS!
xxox Laura ...not THE Laura

*****THANK YOU for bringing that to the discussion Anony....it was just too delicious!

I know I found it quite telling how Laura stumbled a bit when QUESTIONED , by M.KORS!! How did it feel Laura.....it was delicious. I think Michael KORS knew "exactly" what he was doing, putting Miss Laura on the "spot"..just like she did to JEFFREY. I did love it.

NINA looked like she was drooling a bit as JEFFREY's fashions were going down the runway. She had that ...I FEEL soooooooo WVunderful look!!!

So surprised because I wanted Michael to win but his designs completely shocked me because they were not his best work! I belive that the best designs that evening where Uli's (and that completely shocks even me!). I didn't like any of Jeffery's designs! Seeing the episod before the finally his clothes were the ones that I was waiting to see but then when I saw them I was like OMG boring! Laura's were cute very daring most of them being see through and all! BUt MIchael was seriously dissappointing because I loved the short colorful dresses and the bathing suits and thats it so sad!

Has anyone seriously looked at Libertine's green striped dress from his Spring 2006 collection? Jeffrey's looks almost exactly the same.
www.olympusfashionweek.com/Spring2006

Anonymous said...

Fashion is about being innovative, challenging the status-quo. Jeffrey is the one who did that with his designs, more than the other designers. People who run Fashion Week "HAVE SEEN IT ALL" they don't wnat more of the same thing out there already....which is why JEFFREY WON and ULI Came in a close second....Uli showed innovation, but to the judges eye JEFFREY Showed more, they wanted edge, creativity, they got it from JEFFREY. PEOPLE who have never worked in fashion JUST WON'T EVER GET IT, WHY JEFFREY'S COLLECTION WAS THE BEST CHOICE.....So it's just tiring to try to explain it. What we see in DEPT Stores years from now, come from innovative designers creating really outrageous fashion on those European and NY Fashion showrooms. INNOVATIVE WINS......Everytime.

Anonymous said...

I have no quibble with awarding an innovative, fashion-forward designer. But the issue is that Jeffrey is not. And it goes beyond derivative, which, yes, all fashion has some degree of roots in another era.

My problem with Jeffrey is that his references aren't even references - THEY'RE RECENT COPIES. See the Libertine 2006 spring striped dress; see Alexander McQueen's bright yellow tartan gowns; see Marc Jacobs' babydolls; see ULI'S flowy print dresses; and, perhaps most weird, see the ELLE First Look that Nina showed the group before their ELLE challenge - one of them was a red, white and light blue confection, shot outdoors. The only difference with Jeffrey's is that he reversed the colors of the top and bottom. Think about it, folks!

He's such an insecure, easy liar - to himself (I'm not even going to address le finishing scandal) - that he can readily appropriate from wherever he can, however he can, without showing a drop of sweat. Jeffrey, I think your true talent lies in Acting.

Agnes Gooch, sadly, Jeffrey doesn't seem to worry about burning bridges. We have to remember that rather than being mean, petty, immature, spiteful, Jeffrey is "telling it like it is",or whatever poor excuse people like him use to justify their rudeness.

and, as other posters have remarked, some of Jeffrey's designs are do look like very close knock-offs of other designers' collections. Gee, that really is innovation.

And, please, can we retire His Orangeness(aka Michael Kors) as a judge?

ah well, quel dommage!

I have never posted to a blog before but really have enjoyed this one, since becoming a serious PR addict.

I honestly thought that the collections of Uli, Jeffrey, and Laura were all amazing....but in the end, I was really rooting for Uli and SO PISSED at Nina Garcia.

The way she spat out the phrases "Everyone LOVES your clothes....Women will BUY them....They're easy to WEAR" with so much hatred! And then, they end up rewarding Jeffrey who makes clothes that virtually no one (let's be honest) will ever end up wearing.

So basically the message they are sending to America is: Fashion is NOT for everyone. It really is just for the micro-celebutantes.

That sort of pissed me off. But I am more into the show because of just watching the creative process...not really into fashion much. So I guess I should've already known that.

Plus, Jeffrey already *has* a business and a line, so what did he need the win for?

One other thing, what was the deal with Laura's husband's tie at the show? It looked like something she would not have let him leave the house wearing.

Thanks again for the great blog!

Oh my God! I just learned that Jeffrey and Santino Rice were FRIENDSD! I just can't get over it. The fact that they know each other at all, let alone are friendly...

Shock aside, I actually didn't hate Santino -- okay, if I'd been stuck in a hotel room and a workroom with him for weeks, I probably would have. He wasn't awful the way the Pepper was, with her meanness and her snide facial expressions. He was just like a big bull in a china shop and presented a rather sweet combination of arrogance and vulnerability. You just had to watch his face whenever he got a genuine compliment about his designing skills from a judge or a competitor. You could see in his eyes that he was pleased. Almost shy in fact. Then he could be the biggest horse's ass in the next sequence. Just like Jeffrey! I didn't hate Jeffrey either, in fact he really grew on me. Sure, he could be an ***hole, but Angela was insane, just like her mother. That summer camp story alone should get her into a locked mental facility. I didn't always like his clothes either, but he was always creative and a good craftsman. His couture win was well-deserverd -- as was his ultimate win -- but why no one ever brought up that you could almost see his model's... when she walked in it, floors me. It was cut so high it almost rose up to her waist! And OT, Kayne's dress was beautiful. He should've done it in red or deep blue, removed the velvet inserts of the bustier and maybe the boning... Oh, all right, done an entirely different, more modern dress! I give up. LOVED Kayne! My favorite contestants for each season were: Austin, Uncle Nick and Kayne (with Alison in second place, she was so sweet!)
