A-List Awards - The Fashion Show

Friday, June 13, 2008 by
Well.

That was kind of a bust, wasn't it? Not that it was completely without entertainment value. Certainly, Kathy Griffin could keep us entertained by reading her insurance policy. And Lorenzo says that the live version was a hell of a lot more entertaining than the broadcast one. For one, Kathy came out and started off by reading a list of the words that Bravo wouldn't let her say and she did it in her inimitable Griffin style. Also, the wardrobe malfunction bit she did with Lance Bass was not ready for prime time but it sure as hell was funny. What you didn't see were her gigantic rubber boobs and his gigantic rubber penis. Since the whole joke hinged on that, it came across pretty flat when they blurred the offending body parts out.

Still, how much fun was it to see an All-Star Project Runway challenge?

It was so weird to see Laura and Mychael back in the work room alongside Nick and Sweet P and Chris and even (god help us) Daniel Franco. Of course we were thrilled because it gave us .... MORE DRESSES TO RIP! YAY!

When there were rumors floating around a couple of months ago that there would be an All-Star PR season, we rolled our eyes and declared the idea lame.

But after last night, we've definitely warmed up to the idea. Come on, who wouldn't want to see Laura's maribou feathers go toe to toe with Chris's human hair skirt? Or Sweet P vs. Alison? Nick v. Christian? Ah well. It's probably for the best.

The dresses from last night are all being auctioned off for relief efforts in Myanmar. How cool is that? You can own a Laura Bennett original AND help out your fellow man.

As for the dresses themselves, well...

Let's just say there were varying levels of fabulosity. You want more? Then continue to Page 2.

You can watch the whole runway show here, first:

I can'tbelieve Allison did that! I never liked her (although I understood why others did) and I was actually turning around when I saw that dress..but now I like her less...

I loved Laura's the best, and the first thing I said was "why didn't the skirt end with the feathers?" Once again, you guys nail it.

Hate Daniel Franco, always did, always will.

I actually thought Michael's--excuse me, MYchael's dress was a tad slutty. That shoulder strap detail looked promising, but it ended up look like a drunk girl after a long night of "partying".

I liked Chris's...but I'm odd.

Nick's was beautiful. And that's it.

Kathy Griffin is H.I.L.A.R.I.O.U.S.

I vote Mychael for the win, but if it hadn't been for the fact she'd already worn it, Allison would have been a contender. I know you guys love Laura, but I really don't think the marabou was working for Nikki. It was kind of a scroll-down fug.

Anonymous said...

wow, I really loved allison's dress. I'm shocked that she had already designed it.

Hopefully it's her own design, but seems out of the spirit to do something again.

However, I'm sure it's not the first time designers have borrowed from their previous designs for challenges.

Gorgeous Things said...

Kathy Griffin looked stunning in that dress, and she is hy-larious! The win, though, should go to Mychael. Laura's dress didn't do it for me this time. I think it was the embroidered organza at the hem. It brings to mind Jackie Kennedy's saying that you put on all your jewelry for an outfit, then take one thing off. I would have taken that off.

Mychael on the other hand - PERFECT!

Anonymous said...

There actually wasn't a look I hated. I think they all did a pretty nice job and hope they raise a lot of money.

I didn't get the bodice on Franco's dress, but I still liked it overall.

Nick's, Mychael's and Allison's were my fav's.

I think nick went a little safe with the goddess gown look. However, that's his style and she's the host so it seemed appropriate. He gets points for picking a flattering design and color for her.

But I have to agree with others that mychael edges everyone just slightly. I think the look is spot on and she looks sexy.

TheNYCourier said...

Coco Chanel said that, gorgeous things....maybe Jackie did, too, but I know that saying originated from Chanel.

Oh Lo, now I'm really jealous when you say that the actual awards show was better than the broadcast! Please let us know more of the stuff that didn't get on air. Spill it sister!

I'm with you guys - Mychael had the best looking dress and returned to form.

And yes, Uncle Nick did die and go to gay heaven! But what was up with his cardigan? Looked like he raided Mr. Rodgers' estate sale....

The PR Challenge/Fashion show was one of the rare highlights of the broadcast, and towards the end, the only reason to keep on watching. Thank god for small mercies...

Thank you guys for another fantastic post : )
I love Michael's dress! Just enough bling to make her look hot and sexy. I also like Nick's dress.
The others were OK. I hate Daniel's.

i wish they could air the unedited version of the awards show. i was almost peeing with laughter at parts last night, so i can't imagine what the raunchy edit would have done to me.

I think the winner was definitely Michael, with Nick a close second.

What is it with Chris and the hair? I swear that one day we'll hear that he was discovered to have human skulls in his freezer or something.

I loved Daniel Franco on the show, but that dress made Candace Bushnell look flat & wide. Really awful. And speaking of awful, Sweet P's dress was hideous, as usual, but at least we were spared her boohooing. She would never have been included in my list of Allstars (she was riding the short bus all season) - and would not have included Alison either, who I always thought was over-rated, largely because she is pretty.

I liked Laura's dress (I'd have rated it tied for second, with Nick) but I agree about the hemline & more than that, I'd sure love to hear what Nicki Taylor thinks are her figure flaws!! I'd love to trade my flaws for hers.

OMG how annoying was Rachel announcing the show. I really wanted to stuff a sock in her mouth and duct tape the whole shebang.

LOVED MYchels dress. I would by that it every color. I missed the old Mychel too...so sad that the last thing we saw from him was that hooker on safari in Bryant park.

I liked Nicks dress but I hated the color. Also there was a annoying bit of titscrepancy.

Why is SweetP obsessed with saddle bag pockets. Seriously Fug, although that was the most perfect match up.

Loved Laura's look. That color was gorgeous! I loved the detailed fabric under the feathers so much that I sorta wish that she had lightened up on the maribou a little so show it off more. BTW, is it just me or was Niki Taylor walking funny?

Everyone else was blah...and a big BOOOOOOO to Allison for coping out if the challenge is too much for you then why agree to do the show? It's not like Tim was holding a machete to her neck.

I don't know how to do links but hopefully this works. It's the third dress.

Some thoughts:

Overall, I thought the show flopped. Not enough A-list people there for the whole theme to work. Generally not very funny (although Kathy Griffin was great). I was bored out of my mind waiting for the fashion show.

On the dresses:

Mychael's was definitely my favorite, then Allison's and Malan's.

Didn't like the rest. Really didn't like the color on Uncle Nick's. Loved the bustline of Laura's but thought the rest was silly (and she totally didn't take advantage of having a supermodel wear her clothes!)

On Malan's dress (and plus-sized fashion generally): First, you don't have to "put it delicately" that La Blonsky is "plus-sized." She is. It's a descriptor. No moral judgment implied. Second, in dressing plus-sized women, the point is not necessarily to make them look smaller. The point is to make them look beautiful. Malan did - even though he added volume with his dress.

I have so many questions about last night's show!

Like what was with that bizarre Wii Fit commercial, I mean award, in the middle of the show?

And oh my god, what was up with the Lohan family bashing? Not that you really need ANOTHER excuse, I guess. I understand they cancelled last minute, but the cardboard pictures of them sitting in their reserved seats? They must have reeeally pissed somebody off.

I hope Lo dishes more gossip on the show. So much drama!

And thanks for the pictures of the dresses! I hate to admit it, but I didn't care for Laura's. I wasn't feeling the feathers this time around. Don't hate me.

Agree with you on the rest, but I kind of...liked...Chris March's dress? I liked the hair I guess, but the fit in the bodice was wonky. Could have been better.

Thanks boys!

Wait...Did Allison actually design that dress or not? That part isn't clear. I could probably google it or something, but I come HERE for my PR news...

Anonymous said...

It seemed more like "PR alums who live in NYC and were available for the show" rather than "PR All Stars"

Beth said...

Allison has some balls, no?

Mychael's design was absolutely stunning.

I have to give it to Uncle Nick. Kathy Griffin (I love her) never looked better. That color was beautiful on her.

The bodice on the gown Chris designed looked more like upholstry tape than fabric.

And as much as I worship Laura (loved the sewing kit, too) I did not like her design. While the color was gorgeous, it looked more like a leotard to be worn at a child's first dance recital than a cocktail dress. Sorry, Laura. I still kneel before you.

Glad to know the show was better in person. From what I saw, it had to have been.

Anonymous said...

The UNICEF challenge was truly the only redeeming part of the entire A-List awards show. Loved seeing the PR all-stars again. (however, wtf?!?...no Kara Saun or Jay?)

Call me crazy, but I loved Chris' dress. (my only suggestion is that he make the bodice fit better and probably, maybe, should have made the skirt short instead of longer because it had too much of a Chewbacca does Maui vibe.

Looooved Mychael/Michael's dress.

Nikki Blonsky was awesome! The girl really worked it on the runway. (and it looked like the gays were literally throwing themselves at the catwalk) That's one for all the petite plussies out there!

Loved Laura's dress (and that custom-made LV sewing kit!)and did not mind the hem. If the dress had been shorter, it would have looked too "Juniors Dept."

Disappointed that SweetP used what looked like remnants or scraps from her FW collection for Kat's dress. Liked the dress, but felt like we'd seen it before.

Leading to Alison...tsk, tsk, tsk. That is what you call tacky. Gorgeous dress, but tacky move on her part.

Well, that was...nice. The entire program was 1 crazy unfocused craptacular, wasn't it?
The (drunken) Senior Awards @ Bravo High (in so many ways).
Mychael's dress was incredible-- & it proves TLo's point: When Mychael's on, he's REALLY on, when he's not-- he creates a collection.
I thought Laura's dress was gorgeous; considering the client's (exactly, "perceived") body issues, if she had stopped the dress @ the feathers, Nikki's thighs would have shown more. Lengthening the feathers would have looked too "Big Bird"-ish.
Hated cubed Daniel Franco's dress for Candace Busnell, who worked the shit out of a big, black, shapeless sow's ear. Kudos to her, to Daniel Franco (who I've met & was very nice), best of luck w/ acting, honey.
Sweet P did Sweet P for her clone client. Next.
I thought Chris' dress was beautiful (though the bodice fit funny), but w/ yet another hair stunt he's becoming a 1 note wonder. Maybe Chris & Rami could become the new Badgley Mischka, Tresses Kitchka.
Uncle Nick should get a medal for that gorgeous dress. The way the train came back to connect to the back (neckline?)-- masterful.

For me, the winner-- Mychael.

GothamTomato said...

Tlo said: That was kind of a bust, wasn't it?"

I also didn't understand who was eligible to be nominated. Were all those shows on Bravo? And who nominated them & who voted on the winners? I can't imagine anyone giving Tila Tequila an award, other than The Centers For Disease Control, with anything approaching a straight face.

Laure Hutton got the lucky edit last night. Having seen her ramblings unedited, I'm thinking they did for her what they've done (on PR) for Chris March & the Angry Little Peanut (who we were thankfully spared from having to see at all last night).

Funny to see those idiot housewives face-off though. I never watched more than 10 minutes of the OC nitwits, and only watched the NYC show because it was set in NYC (and a friend insisted it was sooo bad I had to see it). I had thought the NYC housewives were complete knuckleheads, but seeing them next to the OC nitwits, last night, made them look positively intellectual.

Laura's dress IS very similar to that Valentino dress (though the Valentino one is better), but I don't think it's fair to say she "copied" it. It may have made an impression on her subconscious, but it could also be a total coincidence. She definitely didn't intentionally just swipe. She has too much integrity for that.

GothamTomato said...

Yeah, the bodice looked like some crafty Girls Scouts were working on a first aid badge, and used her to simulate ace bandaging sprained ribs.

Even Kathy couldn't save that train wreck. Dear God, it was awful.

In my opinion, Mychael ran away with this one. I LOVE "old Mychael" as compared to "Bryant Park" Mychael. My favorite creation of his during S3 was that cris-crossed caramel-colored (sorry, alliteration) dress for the doggy challenge.

Alison-BUSTED! Never wild about her aesthetic, and why the black and white combos all the time? I'm warming to an all-star season too, but she should be excluded after this debacle.

Daniel Franco's looked like a garbage bag...again.

Personally my roomie and I did not like Laura's dress at all. I dont think the feathers worked. And it didn't seem to fit with Nikki Taylor's personality

But we did love Mychael's and we got a hoot out of Chris'

From the clip it seemed like he was deliberatley working the hair as a joke and less as an artistic statement. Still I thought what he made was fun and vibrant and anything to keep giving Holly exposure is fine by me

Pity about Allison. But then again I honestly wondered if they really had a day and a half to make these. Malan's and Sweet P's dresses fit awfully well considering the constraints.

Have to go with Uncle Nick for the win. But it's kind of a gimme. He made a lovely gown. Great color for Kathy, who has a pretty terrific body (no matter what she says about it). And you have to love her catwalk!

I have to tell y'all, I liked Chris's dress. That woman, whoever she is, looked super in it, I thought. Get over the hair issue. For me, 2nd place, and with a riskier outfit.

Really didn't like Laura's. Sorry, guys.

Oh honey, CDC and the publishers of those pathology textbooks in Med School!

My "favorite" moment wasn't exactly on the awards broadcast, it was watching Tim interact with Lauren Hutton on the red carpet. Already knowing that Hutton was completely crazytrain at the event, I really wanted to see Tim's reaction, or lack thereof. All I have to say is the man has supreme control of his facial muscles, and barely lets anything slip through. As an aspiring diplomat, I can only envy that kind of ability.

Rainwood said...

Thanks for the recap boys as I didn't get past the first 15 minutes of the show. I love Kathy Griffin but not enough to sit through all the rest of that crap.

Loved, loved, loved Mychael's dress and Karina (who isn't one of my favorite DWTS dancers) wore it beautifully. I also liked Chris March's dress because the bodice idea was way cool (but could have fit better). The human hair didn't bother me (how is that worse than maribou feathers?) but the dress should have been shorter. I didn't like Laura's dress. It was too busy and made Nikki look thick around the middle. I was surprised that Nikki turned out to be a bit of a clumper in her runway walk. Maybe it was those awful shoes.

I've never been an Alison fan and didn't like this dress. The fact that she didn't actually do the challenge just makes it worse. Maybe she's too cool for that now. Nick's dress was nice minus the bodice detail and I'm glad he didn't fishtail the hem, but he wasn't particularly innovative either. Sweet P's saddlebags really need to ride into the sunset. That is not a good signature look to have. The less said about the rest of the dresses, the better.

Joanie said...

SweetP's dress for Kat was perfect (except those fucking pockets).

I liked the way Chris' dress moved when Holly walked, the color, the shimmer, but the wonky "fencing accident" (good call, TLo) slicing was weird. I still have no problem with the use of the hair.

Mychael's dress was lovely, if not a little...um...familiar?

Nick's dress on Kathy? Gorgeous! That wasn't nearly as drapey as you make it out to be, though. The difference between Nick and Rami is almost the whole world. Nick hit the mark on color and on tailoring the draping to match the model, not draping to drape.

Laura's dress on Niki was okay. I loved the color, the movement, but the top half wasn't exactly winning me over. It looked so soccer mom adds feather skirt to the shirt she wore to PTA. And Niki looking like she's a saggy hag? Noooo! You just can't have that sharp a contrast between the high waist and low boob.

Malan went the wrong direction with Nikki. He made her much more top-heavy than necessary. And she ended up looking even shorter than she is.

Allison and Rebecca put me to sleep. What's with the schlumpy titwings? Yawn.

Oh, I almost forgot Daniel Franco, didn't I? That pretty much sums what I thought of his contribution.

Anonymous said...

Weak, Allison. Shame on you. It was hardly that innovative anyway, if it weren't for the fabric it would be the same mini dress i bought (in two colors) from Forever 21 monthes ago.

Yeah, Malan went wrong with Nicki. It made me think old lady goes to Italian funeral. And then add that up-do of hers, and she aged herself 10 years. I agree with former poster who said you dont have to make her look thin, just make her look good. And this did not. She looked squat and heavy and old. And I loves me some Laura but that Danskin w/ feather skirt did not work. Sleeves too long, maybe if they were 3/4 length it would have looked lighter & longer.

It's a shame that a show like this gets its life edited out of it. (doesn't help that they do hours and hours of extra coverage. see PR reunion shows for this, too). Why not just make it raunchy and sketchy?

And, yeah. Where was Uli?

Heck -- Where IS Uli?

PS I'm guessing they can't use that workroom to film in because the windows would give away all the time-cheating PR does in its edits.

I actually loved Chris March's dress despite the hair. I think his goth pallate at Fashion Week made the hair look even creepier. Somehow, with a lighter color scheme, it works. Mychael, Laura and Chris delivered the goods.

Give Nikki Blonski a set of rosary beads and a henpecked husband and she's every 90 year old Italian grandmother I remember from my youth. (Why not just dress her in a t-shirt with the caption "Picture it: Sicily, 1928.")

I haven't actually watched this episode yet (and didn't know it was even going to be aired), but I definitely have opinions from looking at the pic's. A bunch of these look like stuff they would've made in their respective seasons - especially Sweet P, Chris and Laura. Sweet P needs to get over those damn saddlebags, as you call them, and Chris seriously, SERIOUSLY needs to stop with the hair. What woman wants to wear HAIR? Blech. Loved Laura's - she definitely has her own niche...not something I would wear, but gorgeous. Loved Nick's and Mi(y???)chael's, too.
These pair ups all seem a bit TOO perfect -- now I'm going to have to see how that was decided because if it was the velvet bag, I cry "bullshit." Those all seem way too spot on to be accidental.
And WHERE are some of the other stars, and why did a couple shitty designers sneak in?! I want the winners, first of all, and I want Kara Saun, Kara from S2, Uli, Kayne, Jillian...ok basically all the top 5's of all the seasons.
Could've been a better episode.

I miss Mycheal Knight!

As for the show--I got through less than half of it on the DVR and haven't decided whether to delete or speed through the rest with my hand on the fast forward.

It was just dumb. Dumb categories, dumb nominees, and esp. dumb winners because you could always tell who it was because they were the only ones in the category there (and not always then.)

Hrrmph. Bravo, stick to your knitting. Kathy, we're happy to watch you just talk, you don't have to give out awards in between.

Anonymous said...

Alison was always annoying, and using a damn copy of her dress is even more annoying. BOOOOOO!

But Mychael Knight wins my heart over everytime :)

Mom said...

Mychael needs to rethink his choice of an orthodontist: Every time I see him now, something else seems to be off with his jaw and teeth. That said, loved the dress, but he totally benefitted from having a model with a perfect bod and perfect posture.

Uncle Nick was a narrowly close second. Agreed on that color being purrrrrfect.

Loved the skirt on Laura's dress but the overall look seemed to magnify rather than hide Niki's figure flaws. The volume should have gone on top in order to balance out the volume in her posterior portion. Put it this way: I had never noticed the posterior volume before.

Malan -- I love you like the gay brother of indeterminate cultural origin that I never had, but you need to lay off the foundation and put the eyebrow tweezers away. However, you should never lay off treating every client like royalty.

Alison -- whatever.

Daniel Franco -- way to make the original Carrie look like she has no waist.

Sweet P -- I liked it until I got to the saddle bag hips.

And Chris March -- I found the swaying movement of the hair skirt absolutely hypnotic and I loved it for a show-stopping, high-voltage look. He is an original and I salute him for that.

Anonymous said...

The winner for me was Mychael's dress. She looked absolutely stunning! The color of the dress against her skin tone was wonderful. Young & flirty, just perfect.

Laura's was fun, but I am tired of the feathers & beads.

Liked Chris's...he made me laugh when he explained that because his last dress with hair sold for so much, he thought he would try it again.

Loved Nick's gown. The color was perfect for Ms. Griffin. Other than the hot pink number, she looked pretty fab all night.

I found the entire show boring. But I do have to wonder if the dropping the plates during the Top Chef thing was planned, did they keep it from the guest judges? Harold's face was priceless. He looked truly worried that Kathy was hurt. Funny!!!

Holy shit, can't believe Allison did that! I wasn't really a fan of hers to begin with, mostly because I really disliked her attitude in interviews. But that's pretty low. As someone already mentioned, the dress looks exactly like something you'd see in Forever 21.

A lot was edited out from the show. Lauren Hutton actually rubbed the statue she received on her va-jay-jay and simulated masturbation or something.

Sewing Siren said...

Ohh kay I am better now.
Here's what I think of the dresses:
I do not have a problem in the world with Allison using a design that she herself has previously worn. It is her work, and it a charitable contribution after all. All the designers have done things similar to what they did for the show, that's what their fans want to buy. Remember the object is get high bids for the charity.
I think Nick put a lot of work in his dress and it is very well done, but to me it looks a little pagenty.
The opening in Daniel Franco's dress is vulgar, but the skirt is cute.
I like the Sweet P dress. It works for the client.
I see the Italian (grandmother)influence on Milan's dress, but I like it. She would be harder to dress compared to the others. He did a good job. According to the auction measurments she really isn't all that big, If those measurements are accurate she is not plus size for sure.
Mychael's dress is beautiful.Original, but very wearable.
Chris's dress put's me in mind of the YSL African collection that he did back in the 60's. Very nice.
Loved the Laura dress. I can only imagine wearing it to the Mimosa Ave Christmas party. The Bomb.

Great comments guys,as usual.

Allison gets a failing grade for re-using a dress.

And in regards to Nikki Taylor's 'perceived' flaws; don't forget that she was in that bad car accident a few years ago and had multiple surgeries to repair a lot of internal injuries she sustained. She probably has some serious scars, and lumps and puckers that go with them.

It's not my favorite Laura dress, but I do like it, and I will never stop being amazed at how fast she can put that kind of look together.

FashionFanatic said...

Ya'll need to get over the gross out factor of the hair!

Lots of people wear extensions which are made of human hair, people wear leather which is dead skin (worse than hair in my opinion), and don't get me started on fur. Hell cashmere and angora are made of hair from animals who don't use pantene and have regular trips to the salon.

nice, clean, brushed out human hair on clothes isn't disgusting. Its weird and unique but not gross when you consider the other things people put on thier bodies. Like babies foreskin! Yeah I am talking about you Kim Catrall!!

While I agree with the bulk of your opinions about the dresses guys, (especially the minor criticiisms of Laura's outfit) I do have to disagree with you both about your take on Chris March's design. I loved it and the hair is very reminiscent of the 1920-30's (as well as the early '80's- check out out Deneuve's outfit in the opening shots of "The Hunger") craze for monkey fur. His was actually my favorite outfit.

Quite frankly, I have found it very bewildering the number of folks who are icked out by the idea of human hair, but don't give a second thought about wearing fur.

Chc, according to the auction website, the dress that Nicki Blonsky wore would fit a 36" bust,28" waist, and 36" hip.Even by standards of old that is not a plus size. I did, by the way, qualify my statement by saying "if" the measurements are accurate(because the hip is smaller even than Niki Taylor's dress :X).

Uncle Nick and Michael tie for first.

Laura and Chris both have things I love and don't like so much.

Sweet P at least tried and it works for the client. Danny F tried and it didn't. Alison didn't try.

kath said...

I didn't love the Alison dress. The boobs looked saggy, and the fact that she had already worn it puts me off.
LOVED Michael's dress, loved Nick's dress, liked Laura and Sweet P's dresses, I liked Chris's dress, but thought he could have fit the top better, didn't love Malan's, and I hated Daniel Franco's.
I read on Nick's blog that the reason they weren't in the usual workroom at Parsons was because it had just been painted and the paint was still wet.
As for the hair debate, sorry guys, I personally thought it looked better than Laura's feathers.

Unknown said...

My favorite dress, or the one that really stood out for me as the best, was Mychael's. It was sleek, it was simple, sassy and sophisticated. It WORKED, just as simple as that. I also liked Uncle Nick's as well, and I did like Laura's for being a little sassy, and at least putting a bolt of color into the whole thing. If you listened to Chris, his reasoning for using the hair again was that a) he liked it, but b) he said that his dress on another auction with the hair got the highest bids, so he wanted to have the same effect. I think the dress would've worked if it were on a different model. Holly is looking more anorexic than she was on "Make Me A Supermodel" (sorry, I was a Ronnie fan), and I think Chris' mannequin probably had more curves than Holly did, and that's why it didn't lay right. Otherwise, it was a cool dress. If I was skinnier (because I know I have the curves, I'd get it. The hair has an interesting effect when in motion. I agree with the comments that Malan's dress was probably difficult to make, but it wasn't his best work. And yeah, Allison, that was not good. And besides, I didn't like how it was one length, and the curved up towards her girlhood. Not cool. And Daniel's? It made Candace look thick in the middle instead of hugging her shape. Something that would have made her look like she had some curves would've been sexy.

Isabella asked: I just have a question, and be honest, those defend clothes made out of human hair - Would you wear it? Seriously. Would you?

Honestly, Isabella, I would because for the right event -- and granted there would be a very, very limited number of right events for a dress like that -- I could handle wearing an outfit that's a "Conversation Starter." That's what a dress like that is, made with material like that (for which no creature died, I feel compelled to add). You don't wear it unless you're prepared to talk about it and to have it be the center of attention. And while the vast majority of fashion should not be fulfilling that function, sometimes it does and it's fun!

first of all, my sincerest thanks to tom and lorenzo for posting the video, since bravo's site makes my machine cranky. anyway, the dresses.

i like the presentation for michael's design: the contrast of the composed styling of the model versus the suggestive playfulness of the dress really worked for me. the dress itself, while admittedly sleek-looking, possessed said quality only appropriate in an automobile.

laura's dress, i felt, was a miss from the design perspective: something about the sleeves. however, from the function point of view, i think it worked.

nick's dress screamed PROM! for me.

i didn't pay much attention to alison's dress in the video, but it looks hideous in the stills. it was a snow white-hospital gown-geisha death.

malan, malan, malan... she looks like a truffle. while a very tasty, happy-looking dark choolate truffle with a bit of raspberry, no woman wants to LOOK like one.

chris's dress was just stubbornness. i understand that he loves the idea of hair so much, but he really should keep in mind the lengths that most ladies and certain gentlemen take to keep hair OFF their bodies. the top was also weird.

everyone seems to have ripped the franco monstrosity to molecular shreds already, so i'll leave off on that.

if you ever read this, sweet p. SHE. IS. WEARING. AN. APRON.. it's a cool apron, but it's just an apron. please don't sic your motorcycle gang on me. i'll just like it.

Wearing someone elses's hair on your head is perfectly ok, but having it on your skirt isn't? Sorry, I guess I'd rather wear hair than some dead animal skin. Didn't Chris say something about the last hair dress doing really well at auction, so he was using hair again to get a good price for it?

Anyway, If I got to rank them, my order would be:

Michael
Chris
Nick
Milan
Daniel F
Laura (love Laura, love the dress from the waistbad up, loathe the feather son this one.

When I first saw Allison's dress, I thought she was wearing a Mumu. Using and old dress from her closet was just weak.

I would say that Nick's gown for Kathy was my favorite. The color was wonderful on her.

On Chris' dress, I liked the way the light hit the hair extentions as she moved but the rest of the dress looked like it came from the Mary McFadden for Ace Bandage collection.

I noticed Emmett in the crowd during the pre-show and was hoping to see him included in the group.

Wasn't that what's his name from Sheer Genius dressing Kathy Griffin during that hilarious costume change off stage? He kind of chased her with a can of hair spray as she started back on stage.

Billy Crystal would have killed to do Kathy's song at the beginning of the show! Anyone who can get Anderson Cooper to giggle the way he did on her D-List special is OK by me!

I'd be willing to be that one reason Malan wasn't able to design a more flattering and youthful dress for Nicki B. is that she wasn't available for the fittings. It sounds as if he basically got a copy of her measurements and whipped up the outfit, and then met her about an hour before the show.

I thought the show did lag in some areas, but I LOVED the "In Memorium" section when it was revealed that, instead of showing celebrities who had died, these were celebrities who were dead to Kathy! I laughed so hard I had to wipe my tears.

The OC housewives are nitwits. All they had to do was open their mouths on stage and that became apparent. Although I don't love the NY housewives, I think they could beat the crap out of the OC housewives.

A little more on Nikki Taylor's flaws (from Wikipedia):

"On May 2, 2001, Taylor was critically injured in a car accident in Atlanta, Georgia. The driver of the car was attempting to answer his cell phone, lost control of the car and smashed into a utility pole.[1] Taylor was wearing her seat belt at the time and was not thrown from the vehicle; however, she suffered severe internal injuries, including a collapsed lung and serious liver damage. The accident left her unconscious for six weeks and then bedridden for an additional month. Taylor was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and had 56 operations, as well as substantial physical therapy."

She's probably sporting some major scar tissue.

Nick's dress was more traditional Hollywood, and I absolutely loved it. She looked great and one more thing --you can tell the dress was comfortable to wear.

As for Malan's client --I thought she worked the dress as well as Kathy Griffin. The only quibble I had was the red belt --it looked very 80's.

TLo, Correct me if I'm wrong, but you "kind of hate" the Alison Kelly outfit at the GenArt, but the exact same dress (sans the ridiculous white boots, black skirt and black tights on a different girl) becomes cute at the A-list awards show?

I think you two assessed the dress correctly the first time you saw it. I agree with everybody else who thinks the AK dress design is lazy and poorly concieved. Add to the fact that she used that exact same design to show at two large functions doesn't help her case.

My goodness Anon you must be Laura's biggest fan. I mean I like the dress she made, but to compare her dress made in 12 hours with a Valentino Couture gown with 100's of hours of bead work (probably Lesage), that is quite something. What a compliment. I hope she reads it.

When Alison wore it, she paired it with a black skirt, black tights and ugly little ankle boots. Accessories make all the difference.

Mychael's work obviously looked a bit different on the mannequin in the photo. There wasn't a band yet around it, and I am wondering if he intended to leave it a just a front "bumper" effect. He always needed a dialog with Tim it seems. He should have just taken the offer for more time to mature. I miss him from back then, before the disaster. Also, the finished dress is perfect for the goals, the time constraints and the auction - it has to be particular but open enough for others to want to bid on it.

Cris chose a good material for the top, bad fit and concept, and the human hair thing - meh - but it isn't worse than Laura's pom-pom material i.e. scroll-down fug, let's be honest, and more inventive at least.

Allison..really.It's basically about the graphic and how some details will or will not pick it up. (When Allison works it, she had some dark details escaping to connect the "shock" or "branch" or whatever that graphic is)

Kathy Griffin is a goddess, but the dress is pretty much standard fare for her, more dress-maker than designer.

Gawd, I wish I could fit into Michael's dress. I literally gasped when I saw it.

Sorry Laura darling, Niki's dress was a big miss for me. She looked like a magenta peacock.

And contrarily, Holly can work anything (*small voice* I actually voted for her) and she worked Chris' honey blonde dress. Whose hair element WAS the end of the skirt without further embellishment.

Sadly, being vertically challenged with a recently dx'ed hypothyroid that has caused a 15 lb. weight gain (I'm at my highest weight ever *sob*) the only dress I might FIT in is Malan's. Sadly I wouldn't be caught dead in that, even at my own funeral.

Loved Uncle Nick and Kathy. Between designing for Sasha Cohen and Kathy, he has his place in gay heaven secured. (Then again Vera Wang designed Nancy Kerrigan's costumes...which I universally hated). Conflict, kittens.

Alison, dear Alison, you looked like Mrs. Roper and Rebecca looked 10 years too young for her mid-30's age. I wanted more sophistication.

Wonder if the shoes were contracted. So many seemed so wrong given these dresses weren't made overnight, though the appearance they were as presented on the show was hilarious.

Anonymous said...

I actually really liked Chris' dress. The color choices he made were brilliant...the dark features in the banding match the model's hair, and the lighter features in the banding match the, uh, the other hair on the skirt. I do wish the banding were fitted a bit better, but overall, I think it's a very interesting dress.

Laura's was a miss, maybe because Niki was slouching her way down the runway....the overall shape was not flattering.

Michael's dress was awesome. Best of the night, with Uncle Nick and Chris tied for second.

I don't think Malan's dress is that unflattering. The only thing that bugs me are the sleeves, which give it a kind of matronly look. I also wish it was a bit shorter, maybe right away the knee instead of right below. But I think it's a nice look, and the belt gives her shape. Sure, she didn't look thinner, but she did look glamorous.

Frankly, Laura Bennett's dress reminded me of Bjork's infamous swan dress.

I'm surprised so many people disliked the Laura dress. I personally found it quite striking.

I was never super wow-ed by Allison on the show, or even what I've seen after, but she was certainly a popular personality. I however am kinda crushed that she more or less took the easiest way out possible.

I liked that Chris was bold with the top of his design, even if it is a little costumy. I was sold on the hair in his collection because I felt like it was part of a larger statement. I was less sold this time around.

Daniel Franco - I feel like the only mistep was the bodice. But even then its just a pretty dress.

Nick's I feel was "just a pretty dress" done right to the nth degree. The right color, the right style, ect. I mean its nothing mind blowing, but it was beautiful in my opinion and will certainly fetch a good amount in auction.

Malan's has a lot of detail I seemed to have missed the first time. Someone earlier mentioned that the sole goal in dressing her body style shouldn't be "how thin can I make this person look". And I'm highly inclined to agree. But I wasn't feeling the volume either way.

Mycheal's was stunning. The clear "winner" in my mind. It was his style, but done in just the perfect way.

Sweet P. Well...I'm drawn. I know those saddlebags were "in" a little ago. I don't know how the dress would look without them either. You know I think when the girl is in her element (and not panicking) she has a real sense of fabric. Playing up the "in" colors in her show. The peacock abstraction. The denim color-blocking.

Anonymous said...

Somewhat off=topic, but I can't help but notice that Laura really does have a great pair of legs. Those calf muscles must get a great workout from wearing heels 24/7

Anonymous said...

I don't think there is really a big difference in the Laura's skirt and Chris's. While I'm not a human hair type of girl, but I'm not into the feather thing, but I'm sure both have their market, and I'm willing to bed that the human hair market is bigger.

Mychael wows again ... and definitely deserves a win.

As for Malan and Nikki - as a girl who's a little on the "plus" side, I know I have a few more figure flaws then Nikki Taylor, and there isn't a dress that is going to make me look like I'm a size 3. I think it's unfair to hold Malan up to that expectation. I think the point is with plus sized, and with all fashion really, is to make something that makes you feel beautiful. I think he did that.

Malan, as a member of the short and chunky, we generally do not like to break up our body lines as it makes us look shorter, loved the fabric though.

Also: I'm not sure what all the outcry is about Allison. I guess it's kinda tacky that she wore the dress before the show, but I'm guessing that most the designers produced something they were already working on or something that was in one of their collections (like Malan: fashionledge.com/images/fashion_shows/

I love Laura, but not the dress she made for Nikki. Why, if there was concern about leg scars, didn't she rock out a pants/top ensemble? She had a few of them in her runway show. Perhaps she was constrained by fabric she already chose.

As for human hair, I feel the same way about it as I do feathers. Any garment for which the cleaning bill would be as high as the purchase price falls into the "wearable art" or "fun novelty" catagory.

To me, Malan's was most disappointing. He could have Googled Ms. Blonsky to get an overall feel for her body type and shape. When you're dealing with plus sizes, more fabric is too much. I would have loved to see an off-the-shoulder look for her.

SweetP's weird pockets make everyone look fat, even Kat Von D. It's too bad Jeffrey wasn't available to design for her.

And it's a shame that Chris and his hair extensions weren't chosen for Kathy Griffin. To me, that would have been an inspired match-up.
