Daniel & Emily

Daniel, honey. Seriously. Do some deep breathing, talk to your doctor to see if Xanax is right for you, buy some crystals, masturbate - whatever. Just calm down.

Because honey, even your dress looks nervous. It looks fussed over and disheveled and unsure of itself; like she's going to spend the night in the corner adjusting her bra straps and picking imaginary lint off herself.

The proportions are way off on this thing and nothing looks well fitted or well executed.

The bodice is shapeless and unflattering. The placement of the straps/cap sleeves makes her look wider than she is and the waist can't seem to decide where it wants to sit on her.

We do like the skirt, especially from behind.

We get the impression there's a kernel of creativity and skill there with Daniel. But we're not kidding, his high anxiety is gonna kill him in this contest. The likelihood of his impending psychotic break increases with each challenge. He's gonna be a puddle of sweat with a damp tie floating in it if he makes it to Bryant Park.

Emily talks a big game about how her work is "underground," but so far, we don't see it.

Or is "underground" the new slang for "three sizes too small?" Put a bow in her hair and she's a slutty Baby Snooks.

It's not all bad. We really like the braiding in the bodice - and that's saying something because we rarely like braided fabric.

And the back of it's not bad.

It's just the utterly bizarre proportions on this thing. Everything either sits too low or rides too high; the cups make her boobs look small (and low) and the skirt makes her hips look wide and her legs look heavy. Could've been cute, but the execution was a big fail.

Emily's model looked like she had no torso at all. Another reason to hate very short tootie flaunting dresses.

Having seen Daniel's audition garments, I keep thinking he just has to pull some of that creativity out of his ass and apply it to the challenges here.

Focus, people. FOCUS.

Daniel's dress was simple and boring. Why was he sewing right up to the last minute? (Oh, and I LOVE his tie and jacket! Does anyone know what kind of fabric that is???)

Emily's was interesting but did not fit. Why did hardly any of these dresses fit last week? So bizarre.

I hope this week's challenge actually gives the designers some freedom so we can actually see what their styles/skills are. PR needs to take a break with the "Designers make dresses out of auto parts donated by Saturn while hogtied and blindfolded!" challenge shit. I'd rather see decent clothes than novelty challenges.

Blah! That's what I feel when I think about Emily. It's only been two episodes and I can remember her creations without looking here.
As a Sac native, I really really wanna root for her. But her lack of talent thus far is making it hard.

Happy Birthday Tim Gunn !!

Please tell me, which Style-'maven' declared sagging boobs and hands in skirt-pockets to be chic? I feel like Tim Gunn here, but both dresses demonstrate the necessity of good foundation garments. Daniels model doesn't seem to have much of a waist, which his dress is emphasizing by putting the waist just there.

What fault of Emily's is it if her model grows half a foot in one day so the dress is to short in the bust and skirt? Kudos to the model for not flashing the cameras.

Wow....I can't remember when four also-rans (not in the top, not in the bottom) were quite so bad.

If Daniel, Emily, Jerrell and (especially) Keith (with his curtain-rising-on-a-very-literal-production-of-The-Vagina-Monologues dress) can make it in the middle of the pack, maybe this season's designers aren't really up to the task.

SUS said...

Yeah, Daniel's dress didn't seem to be so complicated to merit is time issues. I didn't hate it, but it looks like something I could get off the rack in Macy*s Jr section.

Emily's was pretty awful I thought.

As a whole, these cocktail dresses were really disappointing! If America's Next Great Clothing Designer cannot create a stunning cocktail dress, then what's the point?

Great post, Tlo! Very plain, very boring, there's no style here at all, just some short dresses that I've seen a million times.

Emily's looked like a skating costume (minus the illusion netting). Too Much Tootie!

Daniel's dress had potential, but it ended up making the poor model's boobs look cockeyed. Emily's dress looks like an old-lady swimsuit from the Koret catalog.

Pfeh.

Slutty Baby Snooks! spit take!

I liked the ideas in Emily's but man, the super-shortness was very off-putting. And you're right, edge? I don't see it.

I am wlling to cut emily a little bit of slack since didn't she ask Daniel if he could spare some black fabric. They were the only ones with black fabric. He said he was unable to. Ergo she may have been making due with what she had

Daniel really has less of an excuse. I thought he lucked out with his model choosing black and she clearly got enough fabric if he was able to make that skirt.

A dress that makes a 20 year old look like she needs a breast lift, is not a good any way you look at it.

And BTW, I actually have an original Fanny Brice/Baby Snooks doll (from the 1930's), and the silhouette of her dress truly is similar - though, you're right, a lot less slutty.

I actually really liked the design of Daniel's dress, though I agree the execution was not quite there. I thought the design was flirty and cute without being at all hoochified. Unlike Emily's dress, which has to be one of the tackiest dresses I've ever seen on Runway. Talk about lucky not to have been in the bottom three. Seriously, what woman would be comfortable in that dress for an evening out?

Mom said...

Things I have learned from watching Project Runway: If the designer has to tell you that they are (fill in the blank with a design-style adjective), then they are not. They wish they were, but they're not.

I do like how Daniel dresses himself, though. Even though you know all his clothes probably smell a bit...damp.

Bailey said...

Also, I've go to nice cocktail parties a lot in NYC, and I can only picture seeing a couple of these dresses there. As the judges like to ask, "Who are these girls? Where are they going?" Making a short dress doesn't make it a cocktail dress! Nor is a cocktail dress some slutty rag the model wants to wear while out on the town getting trashed. I've watched the rerun a few times now, and I just find it stranger and stranger every time.

I agree that the quality of work so far this season is well below that of seasons two, three, and four. On each of the first two challenges, the designers had only one day to complete the challenge. I'm wondering if they gave the designers less time for the challenges than in previous seasons. The producers seemed to be rushing in order to get season 5 filmed and ready for its July 16 premier. Maybe that accounts for the poor quality of work we've seen so far.

krystina said...

I think I remember Emily freaking out about not having enough fabric. So that almost explains the ho-tastic dress. Or maybe it was one of the other neurotic designers. The still of their faces frozen in shock when they find out the models are picking out the fabric is classic.

In any event, I agree with one of the other comments... less novelty, more pretty clothes.

Anonymous said...

I absolutely hated Emily's dress and her model's hair is a mess. Daniel's was cute but a bit boring.

Anonymous said...

I also remember Emily saying that she didn't have enough fabric, which might account for both the low bodice and the very short skirt. On the other hand, her first dress (Giant teal clown collar, belted "lace" dress) was also too short. Neither fitted particularly well.

Although Daniel's dress looked like he literally sweated over it, I liked it. Sleeves, neckline, skirt and all. I think the fit problems were just a glitch; after all, he managed to fit a dress made of plastic cups in the first challenge...

Anonymous said...

Too much tootie. Where's Anne Slowey when we need her most?

Anonymous said...

Emily's dress looks like a bathing suit from Lands' End. (in the plus size department)

Red Seven said...

As my Yiddish grandmother would say, "I could practically see her pupik."

And that, it would appear, is that.

Anonymous said...

Emily's dress looks squished, as if somehow it was meant to be longer and leaner, but some invisible evil fashion hand came and shortened the dress and model (like old-school Skipper doll).
I like Daniel's dress in theory, but what's with the pockets on a cocktail dress? To sneak out with extra mini-crab cakes and shrimp? And she looks a little pregnant to me.
Totally on-target with his impending nervous breakdown. When Tim came to the sewing room, I thought he was going to have a nervous breakdown.

Anonymous said...

Despite the execution problems, Daniel's dress is one of the better ones I saw sashay down the runway - which doesn't speak well to the quality of talent on the show perhaps, but Bailey is right: we should keep in mind the absurd obstacles dreamt up by the tired-ass producers: it's a green challenge! your model is your client! your model will do the shopping! the winning outfit will be sold on Bluefly! (Okay to the first and last bits, but the two middle obstacles are without point.)
At this early stage in the show it would have been nice to have a challenge without so many useless twists and turns, so that we could really separate the wheat from the chaff, instead of having to second guess the outfits based on ugliness of fabric or insufficient amounts of material.
A good, simple episode that could have also climaxed with the auf'ing of two designers, since there are just too damn many of them running around.

Anonymous said...

Looks like Daniel wins the maternity challenge. Oh, she is not preggers, never mind.

Anonymous said...

If Emily's model had moved the wrong way, we just know there would have been way tooo much tootie showing.....

Daniel reminds me of Bart Braverman of Vega$ and MatchGame fame.

Both of these dresses were forgettable to me.

Am looking forward to Daniel's inevitable nervous breakdown =)

Mike B. said...

Emily's would have worked if she'd been more conscious of how it would look on the model. That's a cute design, just an awful fit. (This is meant to be faint praise; just about any of this year's crew can come up with a cute design, but the winners will be the ones who can also make them look good in practice.)

Daniel's was chaff. Another designer who has to step it up or they won't think twice about cutting him the second he slips.

Sewing Siren said...

I like the neckline and sleeves on Daniel's dress, but it looks like it needed to be interfaced because it is collapsing on her. It looks like most of the designers that used this hemp/silk blend had trouble working the fabric. It looks to me like they used dull neeldles , thats why you see that rippling the thread in the fabric is popping. The bodice would have been much more flattering if he had used darts to shape the bust. I like the full skirt and pockets, though, and they way the model is styled. Over all this is still one of the better dresses on the runway this week.
The front skirt on Emily's is just way too short. When you have a circle skirt in this limp fabric it takes time for the bias to hang out, otherwise you end up with a wavy hemline. Instead of making that bulky braid at the neckline with the grey jersey, she shoud have made an underskirt for the dress.

Anonymous said...

As for Emily, can you say "entirely too much tootie"?

LOL. The fabric did something of a mildewed look or effect, didn't it? Cute silhouette, but the bodice needed work. I don't know if those shoulder apaulet (sic) thingys helped. So far, I like Daniel and want to see him succeed. And besides, any guy who wears a coat and tie to sew in is alright in my book.

Emily's dress looks like a bad nightie, and the just-out-of-bed styling on her model doesn't help at all.

Why is Emily's model wearing a necklace of chili peppers? Is that a remnant from the grocery store challenge??

Ok...it's early yet, but besides boring Nina, these designers are boring me.

I hadn't seen the back of Emily's dress but it just adds to the sluttiness of it. Is hooker chic the latest trend? Cause I'm not buying it. This dress was fug, tacky, poorly fitted and made the model look like a ho. Good-bye, Emily.

Daniel's dress had some execution problems but I thought it was one of the better ones this week. To me it was cute and flirty. I hope he steps it up because watching his breakdown is going to be fun. (Is that mean of me?) I also think he's one of the more talented designers - which perhaps does speak to the overall low quality level this season.

daniel’s looks like one of my silk nighties after spending too much time tumbling around in a too-hot dryer. emily’s would have been nice for the sasha cohen challenge in season 2. can’t you just see her pulling a flying camel in that thing?

The fit on both those dresses remind me of how Santino's garments were often poorly fitted and proportioned. Neither Daniel nor Emily has displayed the killer impressions that will keep them around until the final 3 however.

Anonymous said...

"We get the impression there's a kernel of creativity and skill there with Daniel."

Yes, there is. Trust me.

Anonymous said...

Daniel's dress was very bland and Emily's was way too short.

Anonymous said...

i agree with most of the posters here -- daniel's dress is a nice, but safe concept that suffered greatly in the execution. it looks limp & bulky.

emily's is way too short and tlo are right that the bodice seems to be pulling down and flattening her girls....i do recall that she was horrified at how little fabric she had to work with. what did that model do with the $75? that fabric looked like some type of jersey - unless it was silk it shouldn't have cost that much for the couple of yards she purchased.

i also agree that i would prefer to see some challenges that simply allow the designers to do something nice & special so we can really see their talent rather than these BS assignments that test their stamina & reaction to adversity.

Daniel’s looked a lot classier than most of the other dresses.

Poor Daniel. I'm with TLo on this; take a Xanax - or twelve. Cute dress but a teensey bit short.

Emily – talk about short! I am shocked that you didn't get the dreaded 'tootie' comment from the judges. Thanks to that hemline, the world is your model's gynacologist.

Anonymous said...

I think Daniel's "high anxiety" is cute. I hope Daniel and Wesley live happily ever after.

Anonymous said...

Emily's could've been a cute dress had she had more fabric. It's very short and I can't see anyone wearing that and not feeling uncomfortable.

Anonymous said...

I'm just glad Daniel was able to finish his dress, the man is a nervous wreck.

Anonymous said...

That skirt is so short I can practically see her birth canal!

Anonymous said...

I think Daniel is very talented - looks at his portfolio - I'm just afraid he can't handle the pressure.

CroqueMonsieur said...

Daniel's wast the only dress that came down the runway and made me think it was actually cute and wearable.

Anonymous said...

Seriously, Emily sent a waitress uniform down the runway. That thing was ugly.

Anonymous said...

Daniel's didn’t look very well constructed and in the end it was just a cute black dress.

Anonymous said...

Emily's - Perfect dress to see your gynecologist. You don't even have to remove your clothes.

Miranda said...

I just have one question: who the hell puts pockets on a cocktail dress? That's just dumb.

Bailey said...

Can someone mention something about short skirts and gynecology? It's hilarious to hear 30 people make the same joke in a row.

Tim's take said Daniel almost didn't finish this dress and that he was doing major sewing almost right up until the runway show. It seems like that would probably make any of the designers panic. I didn't notice anything particularly nervous about him in the first episode.

Anonymous said...

Coming down the runway Daniel's was one of my favorites, but looking at the photos now I see how many problems there are with the garment. He lucked out that his model selected that black over those horrid, inexplicably popular browns and champagnes--the black was much more forgiving and looked much more chic than it would have in any other color.

There's nothing I really like about Emily's creation. It looks like beachwear.

Emily's dress was too short, the proportion of her dress was wrong for the model. She didn't have enough fabric, I guess.

I don't understand why Daniel took forever to make his dress. It looks pretty simple to me.

Well to all of you who ripped on the pockets in a dress - I STRONGLY disagree. '
If the skirt is wide and floaty I think they are GREAT!! I LOVE THEM and the give the model a chance to show off the floatiness while looking natural.

I seem to recall a red carpet (awards show I think) where ALL of the reviewers also raved about a dress with pockets - could it have been Charlize?

Anyway while I liked the concept of daniel's dress - who ever said it was the ONLY one wearable and cute/appropriate.. did you NOT see the gorgeous navy dress (I forgot the designer - (female))

Anonymous said...

Is Daniel still dating Wesley?

Anonymous said...

Wesley was crucified for making a dress too short but Emily was safe???? To me that's a top not a dress.

I think Emily's dress looked a lot better on the form and lost a certain something on the model. Just a thought.

Daniel's dress is fugly and Emily's dress is completely out of proportion. I always ask myself "would I wear this" and the answer in both cases is a loud and cheerful "NO WAY"

Daniel's model looks just like Leighton Meester.

I attributed the numerous too short and too low cut dresses to the models not buying enough fabric.
