Auf Wiedersehen, Emily!

Can we reiterate that we just don't get where she's coming from when she calls her designs "underground?"

Y'know, it's not the worst thing we've seen on that runway. It's arguably not even the worst thing seen on the runway last night.

In the "points added" column, she did a pretty good job interpreting her source image. And let's face it, none of those dresses last night really did all that hot a job of "capturing" New York at night. This was at least one of the best efforts in that regard.

In the "points taken away" column, it's a yawningly basic dress which required that all the work be done by the embellishment and frankly, the embellishment failed to do its job.

We are of course, talking about that "Donny and Marie, circa 1978" skating costume ruffle.

It's just so weird, the way she arranged it. We might be persuaded that a ruffle like that could work on a dress, but thought needs to be put into where and how much of it is going to be applied. Why does it cut right across her boobs like that? And then right down her stomach to come to a stop right at her cooch? What is that? Is that how they do it "underground?"

At this point in our PR-watching careers, it's like watching mice in cages react the same way over and over again to certain stimuli. It's kind of psycho- and sociologically interesting to see all the patterns of behavior play themselves out repeatedly. Last night, Emily stepped into the "Delusional" role as she walked away from Tim's rather harsh and pointed criticism of her dress and said, "Tim gave me kind of a mixed review but I have my own sense of style, direction. I'm happy with my dress."

Honey, when Tim starts off a sentence with "I'm worried about the judges," he ain't talking about their health. "Mixed review," my ass.

By the way, anyone notice the dress on that Elle cover behind her? Deliberate or subconscious inspiration? You make the call!

And as far as designers having their own "style" and "direction," that's all well and good and it can even work in your favor sometimes in the judging, but until you get your ass to Bryant Park, you need to consider those judges to get through the competition.

Personally, we wouldn't have auf'd her, but it's exactly the kind of thing those judges love to hate.

And let's face it, when Nina can't even be bothered to say anything about your dress, you've committed the gravest of PR sins. You have bored Nina. Pack up your headbands, girl. You're going home.

I didn't hate this dress as much as some of the others on the runway, but I couldn't argue with the aufing either.

She violated cardinal rule #1 of Project Runway: Listen to Tim. He knows what he's talking about!

lovemesomeuli said...

The arrangement of the ruffles is just not flattering at all, and there's nothing so great about the dress underneath either. Emily is just meh. I kinda figured she wouldn't stay around long, but I thought a few others would go before her.

CQAussie said...

hahhaa Love it.

When Nina smiles like that - you just know it's OVER.

I noticed the Elle cover from your pic too and hmm....I think it was subconscious but execution sucked.

When will these designers LEARN to listen to Tim?! Big Daddy Gunn knows what he's talking about!!! Ignore at your risk.

Bye Emily.

lovemesomeuli said...

Yes, yes, listen to Big Daddy Gun! He is the greatest! You notice he didn't like Kenley's idea either. I'm with you Timmy!

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Emily's previous designs didn't impress me (though a scarcity of fabric may have been the cause of last week's problems), and I thought this one was dreadful. Tim's Take also mentions fit or seam problems.

One of the things I enjoy about the show is when, after Tim's pointed comments, a designer really transforms his/her design, saving it from disaster. I'm always impressed by that ability to think and execute creatively and quickly. That's what I expected from Em. Tim may not be right 100% of the time, but he's right often enough that ignoring him just seems foolish.

I think emily didn't get the chance to show exactly what she can do.
She seems like a down to earth person, who I'd want to be friends with, and I will definitly look into buying her clothes in the future! (I love the clothes on her website!!)

I thought her the ruffles on the dress looked like a va-jay-jay.

Anonymous said...

Emily ingored Tim and bored Nina. The double kiss of death.

Still, not the most poorly executed ruffles of the day; check out B de S's dress. Now those are some fugly ruffles, also placed on a ho-hum black dress.

And the true losers of the evening somehow slithered past the judges again:

Stella: low-rise skinny jeans with a lace-up crotch? Really?.

Suede: A Girl Scout uniform, complete with sewn-on merit badges.

Jennifer: No comment.

Did anybody notice that Blaine had a similar concept, with the black dress and bright embellishment? The difference is that his design looked interesting and different and was well executed, which made hers look even worse in comparison.

I've often thought, "Why aren't you listening to Tim?!!"

But does anyone else remember when Christian wouldn't listen and would win on the runway?

That's why I think designers like Emily don't fix issues Tim raises. They just don't know how so they default to defending their "vision" so it doesn't look like they're out of ideas.

That ruffle screams "Carmine Ragusa mambo number" to me. Quick, fetch Boo Boo Kitty.

Hillary said...

She violated TWO rules of PR:
1. listen to Tim.
2. don't bore Nina.

All of the designers this season seem to have Emily's problem though -- big talk and not much execution. Emily's underground, the matronly dress girl keeps pulling out the Holly Golightly at the Dali exhibit line, Jerrell is fierce, Blayne is licious, etc etc. But their work isn't representative of these things -- assuming of course their words make sense in the first place. What, I ask you, is licious?

Hephaestion said...

I was just relieved that another gay guy wasn't eliminated.

Losing Steven on Big Brother 10 PLUS another gay guy on PR would have just been more than I could stand in one week...

lovemesomeuli said...

Totally and completely agree with you about the Elle cover and Emily's dress looking very similar.

I didn't get a single judging selection right last night. Totally suprised to see Kenley's dress win. I could not follow her train of thought from fabric selection to construction but I have to admit it did come together amazingly!! I agree with Lorenzo on this one.

However, it was not the piece that deserved to win. I feel Terry and Leanne creations should have been at the top!! LOVED Leanne's interpretation of the drainage grate.

So much to analyze from this episode show...can't wait for more!!

Cedar said...

I don't get it. Yes, this dress was ugly, but it was far, far less ugly than Blayne's.

I hated her dress and her attitude. By the way, Nina don't insult Carmen Miranda, she had way better outfits than that!

I didn't particularly like Emily's dress (although I did like the colors), but I understood her concept. I also understood Keith's concept, but his dress looked like a bin of crafting scraps had thrown up all over it. He should have been gone, gone, gone!

Anonymous said...

Yes, Emily's dress was fug (and she is totally giving me a Cindy Loo Who vibe with those pixie bangs and wide-open eyes) but it was not the fugliest of the evening...that would be Keith who not only made an ugly dress but totally missed the "night on the town" part. This was, perhaps, a night out on the Amish farm. Or evening at the fabric scrap store. His dress had no shape, was too white, and was too country kitchen for me. Ugh/fug.

And he's got a sour attitude and thinks way too highly of himself. End Keith rant.

Anonymous said...

Thank GOD they didn't send my husband home.

Well, the dress didnt work, and the model didn't work it either. What is that weird posture she has in the screen shot?

Sewing Siren said...

To be fair, by the time Tim gives his critique it is usually too late to make significant changes. The ship has already sailed.
I like the way she worked the ruffle, but the placement was very bad. The basic dress was neither here nor there.
I thought Jennifer's was worse, though. I was sure she was going home when Heidi said she wasn't interested in seeing anymore of her work.

KayEssAy said...

This challenge seemed to me like who could out-obscure the others in terms of inspiration photos. I LOVED Terri's look and think she should have gotten the win, but seriously, blurry stickers? WTF was that?

And did anyone else notice the gaggle of designers taking pictures of water on the streets a la Andrae?

gacm said...

I thought Emily's dress began as yawningly boring because the inspiration photo was yawningly boring. A long exposure that made cool streaks and ....zzzz.......

It brought to mind Kara Janx's boring black dress with the yellow as inspired by the boring photo of yellow "do Not Enter" tape (though Kara would have never used ruffles).

Bailey said...

Emily went home because her dress had absolutely no redeeming value. It was straight-up 80's Malibu Barbie. Nothing about it was fresh and new, and those ruffles were both executed terribly and basically just hiding what was a VERY simple black dress. Not only that, she showed that she's not willing to listen and that she doesn't have a very discerning eye.

People who blindly defend their work (like Keith)need to go home. Everyone, even the greats, have misses, but chalking it up to "well that's my style" is ridiculous. Own that your dress was ridiculous and do better!

Anonymous said...

TLo:
Can I just thank you for the terrific photos and analysis this season. Your blog just gets better and better. Merci!!!

Bailey said...

Oh, and the reason Blayne's dress placed above Emily's is simple. It was the same dress, just executed better (not great). The placement of the ruffles was more interesting and elegant and he had some sort of "color story," even if it was oh-so-Lisa-Frank.

harleyd said...

I can honestly say I have not been "wowed" by ANYTHING that has been sent down the runway yet. It all is coming down to execution, not actual design in my opinion. Nothing has come down the runway and I've said "That's GORGEOUS!" like with Laura or Austin (damn you Wendy Pepper!). So far I'm not impressed.

Although a dress hasn't "wowed" me yet, a comment during next week's preview has:

Tim: Looks very Sgt. Peppery to me.

Gloria Swanson: I don't know what that is...

Tim: Oh, my God.

"Oh, my God" is right Tim...Oh, my God, WTF!

Rainwood said...

Although she wasn't a great judge, Sandra was right about how the ruffles should have been flat, thinner, and more integrated into the dress. It would have been better fashion and a better interpretation of her photo.

I'd have sent Jennifer home first but neither one of them were likely to go far so it's not a major miscarriage of justice.

Tom in KC - agree on the Carmine Ragusa mambo comment. Exactly!

Anonymous said...

Wow. I totally did NOT notice the ELLE poster behind Emily. You guys don't miss a stitch or a thread.

When Emily interpreted Tim's criticism as "a mixed reaction," I nearly lost it. Basically, Em's dress has been done before on many a runway as well as PR seasons 1-4, only she was too into her own vision to get that. Perhaps if her vision hadn't been so focused on the ELLE poster then she'd still be in the competition.

"...pack up your headbands, girl." - TLo

Again, ROFLMAO.

Anonymous said...

Totally agree with this auf'ing. I have really disliked all of her designs, and I also agree that she seems confused about what her point of view is. Wishing you were "underground" does not make it so. And you guys, as is so often the case, are completely right: when I heard her respond to Tim's critique with "I really like my dress" I knew she was gone. It's bizarre how these scenarios replay themselves so identically across the seasons.

Anonymous said...

REgarding the picture on the wall - good eye!!

What was going on with all the ruffles last night? Did Tim drop them all off at a Cha-Cha convention? Emily, Blayne and that brown ruffle-tastic ballroom dancing gown of Jarrell's - yuck, yuck and yuck. Cha-cha-cha...

Anonymous said...

Emily's pretentious attitude bugged the hell out of me. If you're so "unique" and "underground" then SHOW IT DAMMIT. She had all the chance in the world to prove that and she landed in a big pile of fail. Meh. Boring and nothing to back up her talk with. Not sorry to see her go.

Trish said...

I agree with the judges on this one. The ruffle was strangely placed and the dress seam was all puckered. And I am sure Nina picked up on the similarity with a recent Elle cover. Jennifer's dress was strange but it was unique. Emily's looked like a hand-me-down dress that a teenager tried to fancy up for a party.

Anonymous said...

Boring. Just like Kara's no trespassing dress.

Anonymous said...

I'm baffled at how designers still ignore Tim at their own peril, even after 4 previous seasons!!! have they ever watched the show? or is it that being in the mix of it all clouds some people's judgment?

the other thing that amused me last night was how some of them thought that they were really going to have "a night in the town" and party... really? again: have they ever watched the show????? hilarious!!!

Mom said...

There was no There there with Emily. And Jennifer is not far behind. We've really got some serious dead weight this year.

Bailey said...

WORD to Emily calling it a "mixed review." It's possible Tim offered some faint praise to be nice, but I doubt it.

And, designers, please learn how to describe your aesthetic better. Jennifer, can the Holly-Golightly-and-Dali crap, you are so off. Once again, vaguely whimsical shapes on adult women do not recall surrealism, no matter how much you'd like to think so.

And no one who was actually underground would ever describe themselves as such. Doing so makes you look like a ridiculous poser, especially when you're not delivering the goods in the slightest.

Bailey said...

What the hell was the challenge anyway? I thought there was a large disparity between the dresses and what they were for. Was it supposed to represent NY at night? Was it simply supposed to reflect a photo they took? Was that photo supposed to represent NY at night? Also, and most importantly, who/what is the dress for? We had everything from cocktail dresses to ball gowns to technicolor Miami slutsuits. In a way, it makes it difficult to judge them, because clearly no one was on the same page (though we finally got to see the designers' individual styles, thank God.)

I always thought they were cute but didn't realize they were the losing dresses reworked! That's awesome. And Sewing Siren, MUCH better than Emily's!

I think the only thing that saved Jennifer was that she's got a strong look. A generally matronly and boring look, but you could still pick her dress out of a lineup every week. Emily sucked but was also all over the place. I'm thinking Jennifer is not long for the Project Runway world, however.

I'm OK with Emily going home, though (sorry) I seriously dislike Keith, and I totally thought he was getting the loser edit last night with his personal growing up gay in SLC story. But I knew he wasn't going home because there was a preview where he topples over with a shopping cart a la a NYC transient so he's around for a little while longer. Even if I wanted him to go home last night.

Emily's ruffles showed a serious lack of precision. I mean, why would you end a ruffle right at the crotch? It makes no sense, not even "design-wise." And to ignore Tim? Kiss of death.

Cedar said...

Bailey--I honestly thought Blayne's dress was less attractive than Emily's--the colored fabric was extremely tacky (at least Emily kept hers in the same color family, and kept the ruffles the same length/shape), the fabric itself looked sloppy and uneven (the thing at the neck was especially awful), and the general shape of the dress was just as boring. I missed the episode last night due to work stuff, and when I checked out Tim's Take/Rate the Runway, I assumed that their dresses had gotten mislabeled (a la Jennifer and Jerrell last week).

That's ok. I really didn't like either of them, I just happened to respond better to Blayne's. A big difference to me is that I think Blayne kinda turns out ugly but not boring and may actually be able to turn some hot dresses eventually, whereas Emily was just blah blah boring and bad for the most part. So far anyway. But that's just my opinion. It is curious no comparison was made to the dresses on the show though - they were very similar and I noticed immediately in the workroom they were pretty much making the same dress.

I felt that was what Jennifer had going for her last night. She said was not happy with the outcome and hoped it would squeak through.

I'm also tired of the Holly-Go... quote, but I'm curious. The only place I've seen that before is in print. I wonder if they didn't take that quote from this episode and run with it...big time! Now we are so sick of it, since that is all they really printed about her, that when she finally says it, it's old.

I thought Keith should have gone last night. I'm glad Jennifer is still in because I thought she and Terri (my winner for Ep. 2) got the shaft last week.

emily seems like a cool person, so was sorry to see her get aufed. I too noticed the wink she gave Jennifer, and I liked that, sort of we're in this together, good luck kinda thing. I know jennifer was happy to stay, but she should have hugged Emily, perhaps they weren't great friends or something, but unless the bottom two are enemies, usually they hug each other or something.

I would have sent Jennifer home, but i think her design took a few more risks, and the ruffles was just a disaster. the basic basic black dress probably didn't help much.

Unlike wesley, your previous entries weren't that strong I think so you probably would have been auf'd sooner rather than later.

GothamTomato said...

You know that thing that was crawling out of the crotch of Blayne's first outfit?

The other have of it was working it's way across this dress.

Those ruffles were completely illogical. And I don't think they related to the streaks either. Some sort of ribbons or fringe or something that would have moved in a different way when the model walked would have related to those streaks. The ruffles only related in terms of color.

It looks like a sightgag: A dress a sitcom character would turn up in, somewhere, to get a laugh upon entrance. So in that way, maybe that did relate to NYC at night - we have a lot of comedy clubs.

Youngest child spotted the Elle cover behind Emily and the dress form! Considering most of his life is spent messing around the innards of computers, and his fashions choices reflect that avocation, we were impressed!

She didn't listen to Sir Gunn. It's her own fault.

I totally agreed with the judges. I don't think I've liked any of her work.

I want Keith to stay but his dress was really bad, worse than Emily's. I thought Blayne's version of the same black/color combo was pretty bad too.

Lenora said...

I didn't like Keith's dress either. I think maybe if he'd used less white?? I think he was given something of a break because he lost his model.

I have never seen Nina so bored.

You know, they ought to pass out a Tip Sheet to designers when they make the cut for a PR season, and it ought to say, "Heed what Tim says, discard it at your peril." This is SEASON 5, for crying out loud, you think they'd know this by now.

I didn't get the placement of the ruffles and think they might have worked if placed differently and in a different proportion. The thing is, as they appeared last night, the model looked like she was wearing some big oozing scab from King Kong's finger. Not pretty.

There were still worse garments -- those suffering from major construction issues and a lack of creativity (yes, I'm looking at you, Jennifer)

It looks like a labia, not a vagina, but I'm totally on board with that. It absolutely does.

Anonymous said...

I didn't think she was the worst, but we just need to slog through all these look-alikes so I'm fine with it.

That model needs to go, too!

Fnarf said...

I've disagreed MUCH more vehemently than this, but my picks are the same as debbiet's.

Honestly, those ruffles make it look like someone gutted her model and all her insides are falling out.

brooklyn bomber - it's worse than you thought. I actually know that drag queen. He's a friend of Ed's from Key West. His name is Randy Roberts. Sweet guy. Tough way to make a living IMHO. And the other one in the picture is the incomparable Varla Jean Merman. Absolutely hysterical charcter who puts on a riotous show. She sings opera while eating a whole can of spray Cheez. And her alter-ego Jeffery Roberson used to date my friend Ted.

It's a Living. Well, I used to want to be one of those waitresses - and my head is just full of useless info and references.

lenora - thanks for the gentle prodding. I'll get to it.

Am I the only one that thinks it looks like a fraggle threw up on it? (Although now that you mention it, the lady-parts observation is pretty accurate.)

I thought Keith's dress was worse. At least Emily's dress looked finished and like there was a female body underneath it. I suspect the judges didn't want to give 3 guys in a row the 'auf.'

As I recall, when Michael did the winning hotpants Pam Grier outfit, he was originally doing something else. I think it was a skirt but then Tim gave his critique, he was worried, and Michael changed direction and whipped up those hotpants beautifully and quickly.

I agree with everyone, Tim isn't always right but he is someone they need to listen to.

I remember Tim critiquing Mychael's design, and how quickly Mychael was able to rethink and do the hotpants.

Bottom line, designers, if Tim is concerned, you should be too.

I haven't seen the show yet, but looking at pics of all the outfits, I think Emily wuz screwed & Kenley is very smart. I didn't like Kenley's dress, I see what the judges were doing. I reeeaaalllyyy don't like the Balencia stuff, but then, I'm not in fashion.

Jennifer's was boring and oddly shaped. It was reminicent of a 50's Barbie outfit. Blaine's looked like her colostomy bag was pooing fabric, circa 1978. Disco Fevahhhhh!

Did none of these designers watch last season? Sweet P went from some pretty large disasters to making it to the final five BECAUSE SHE LISTENED TO TIM. I mean, c'mon!

I disliked this dress but also really didn't like what Keith put out there. It was pretty awful.

I think you are giving credit to Tim were none is due. The way I remember it is Mychael did make a skirt to go with the Icon outfit, but he corrected himself. Then when Tim gave his critique, he said something along the lines of- I don't usually respond to hot pants, but he liked these. At that point Mychael told Tim that he had originally designed a skirt, but bagged it. Am I wrong?

Yeah. It's just like when you're watching a horror movie, and there's some idiot on the screen, and you're screaming, 'DON'T OPEN THE DOOR!!!' Except here it's, 'Duh. Listen to Tim!!!'

But maybe Emily had a different strategy - because it wasn't editing that that dress needed, What that dress really needed was vaginal rejuvenation.

So maybe this was Emily's underground bid to get on Dr. 90210. We'll have to keep a lookout.

Blayne should be named Damian. Something weird about him...

I agree about Keith's toilet paper dress. That was really unattractive. That being said, Emily's work was mediocre at best. She acted a bit too smarmy about her designs too.

I'm okay with this auf'ing, because I think all Emma's talk about being "underground" is just that, talk. Here was a challenge where she really had the opportunity to show her stuff, and that's what she brought to the ball. Not good enough. During the runway show she says something like, "I'm just not sure that I got to show my style with this dress." Well, honey, there's no one to blame this time but yourself.

I thought Emily's looked like Jessica Alba's dress on the Elle poster in her work corner (copied in a bad way). I wasn't impressed by anyone else. I did think mine was the best, but then again I always do."

A little full of herself perhaps?

Anonymous said...

If she'd abandoned the ruffles idea and done an insert instead, possibly in a shape and location that would have been more flattering to her model's body...

it still would have sucked and looked like a teenager's idea of an awesome cocktail dress, but not bad enough to go home.

My eyes bled last night...I may not recover. i'm scared, very scared...

Note to Keith: Keith, i never found you attractive, even if i do have a thing for mormon (they need to be in a suit). It's just that you need to contain your lifelong sexual/creative repression and channel into tasteful designs, not merely an F-U to your abusive and conservative parents/society with/in which you grew up with/in.

Because my eyes bled last night, you were a big part of the cause, keith.

The tragedy is that I still don't know if she was the hot one or the weird one. Or the weird or the hot one...

Alas. I would not have sent her home. She actually made a dress, not a craft fair project.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Kenley might be "a little full of herself" for both pointing out the similarity between Emily's dress and the one in the picture hanging on the wall at Emily's station AND saying it was poorly done, but ... it WAS poorly done and it DOES look like the outfit in the photo, as TLo also pointed out, so what's your point exactly? At this stage, Kenley is one of the FEW designers here who has some right to be "full of herself."

Anonymous said...

I thought emily's poorly made dress looked like it had a mutant
Nudibranch
crawling on it. it might not have been so bad if she had stretched it out to run all the way up to the shoulder & down to the hem. in my opinion it was not the worst but it nevertheless was an unimpressive entry.

jennifer's reminded me of a 1910 women's "bathing costume" - boring and matronly. keith's toilet paper dress was really fug. either of those were worse than emily's although i'm certainly not crying over her aufing...

I thought the dress with the clock as inspiration was auf full. Purple with white trim I think.

Stella is certainly one note. Why don't the judges comment about it like they've ragged on some people in past seasons?

Lenora said...

Sewing Siren: I think you are giving credit to Tim were none is due

My point was more in response to someone who said that they thought there is not much time to correct problems that Tim has mentioned. Just pointing out that there are designers who can corrections quickly.

Stella's no "one note." She's maybe...a half note on a good day. Her aesthetic or look has been done to death. Many a retail chain store have based their entire business on her signature style. It's come and gone and come back....

And for the present time, Stella provides too much good TV to be auf'd. However, have no fear, her day will certainly come soon enough.

Btw: auf-ful = brilliant

I'm surprised no one mentioned Emily's comments in the exit video (part two) where, when asked what advice she gives her fellow designers, she tells them to be wary of "slithering snakes" or something to that effect. By this she obviously means sneaky-ass bitches who pretend to be your friend but are cold-hearted reptiles (like Wendy Pepper). I wonder whom she could mean? Since she speaks highly of "two of my three roommates" in her interview with People – she names Korto and LeAnne - they can be eliminated. But who else is left who would fulfill such a description? To be a snake don't you need to pretend to be nice, when in fact your venomous? That doesn't leave to many candidates (since most of the designers don't spend a lot of time being nice), except maybe someone like ... Terri. Anyway, just stirring the pot, bitches.

Emily's dress was underground the way the 4 train is underground*.

* It goes under Bloomingdales, then it goes under the food court and minimall at Grand Central Station.

(Also, the problem with Jerrell's dress was that that train literally would be ON the town. Ewwwwww.)

Of the four bobsy twins, Emily was my favorite. I'm sorry to see her go while Stella and Suede connive to fray my last nerve.

And I totally love the way she winked at Jennifer when they were on the runway. That's the sort of person I would like to have seen more of. bummer.

Did anyone else notice that comment that flashed on the screen at the very end, something to the effect of, "the judges reach their final decisions based on input from the producers and Bravo."
That explains why Keith stayed when he should have been aufed. Imagine all the viewers they'd piss off and even lose if he was gone.

Anonymous said...

The only way that dress was "underground" was in the sense that someone should bury it. Immediately.

There were ways to do the ruffle correctly. This was not one of them. (And why did it need to be ruffled, anyway? She could have made a much classier dress by cutting out a few curved stripes and sewing them into the front of the outfit - that would have looked much more like her photo and probably saved her from being auf'ed.)

In any case, I wasn't sorry to see her go.

She said she had personality to offer to the show but i never saw it. Oh well, best of luck to you Emilr! NEXT TIME LISTEN TO TIM! (why do they NEVER listen to Tim???)

I had been wondering about the Elle cover on the wall too. So glad you pointed this out.

Tim generally knows what he's talking about, and if you go the opposite direction from him, you better be able to defend your design (or you better make great TV so they want to keep you on the show.) Although occasionally he's way off from what the judges think (Ricky's denim Amy Winehouse dress)

Don't bore Nina!!

Anonymous said...

Sometimes I wonder if the designers watch the previous seasons... There are still those who don't know how to deal with Tim's criticism,... everyone used tablecloths when Austin won with the cornhusk dress (although you could also make the case that Keith of season 3 won with bedsheets),...

Simone said...

Anyone else think that Keith is the Rob (season one) of the season? Hot guy but not so hot desinger. I thought for sure he'd get eliminated! I understood his concept but somehow it didn't translate, to quote MK those white flaps looked like toilet paper.
I'm kind of glad Emily's gone ... there are so many brown haired quirky indie girls this season

Hillary said:

All of the designers this season seem to have Emily's problem though -- big talk and not much execution. Emily's underground, the matronly dress girl keeps pulling out the Holly Golightly at the Dali exhibit line, Jerrell is fierce, Blayne is licious, etc etc. But their work isn't representative of these things -- assuming of course their words make sense in the first place.

I agree. I cannot seem to get interested in this season at all. In past seasons, many of the designers had a story they told through fashion, letting the designs speak for their style. Sure, there were extreme personalities, but they most often had the talent to bring their vision forward and not let their TV presence overshadow their designs.
There's the adage, "show, don't tell" which seems to be lost on this new group. Too many of them seem more concerned with talking up their styles and playing into their TV roles that we don't see their talent, nor see their dedication to
bringing that style to light. Not saying I need blood and tears (of course, we've had those in other seasons!) but I want something more. Maybe the quiet ones we've not really heard from will be the inspired designers, I guess it's wait and see.

Anonymous said...

Keith may be pretty, but he sure makes an ugly dress. And the stupid Axel Rose headband is embarrassing. Please, we're supposed to be impressed that you are a clothing designer? The slavish cuts to Keith in wife-beater, Keith shirtless, Keith coming out of the shower...Bravo is pandering here and we all knew it.

He shoulda been then one to nuke before Emily.
