Not only do we want some impressive talent, but some real drama queens, too please. Crank it up this next season...this past one was a real snoozer.

No, no, no, no, no...NO established fashion professionals.

I'm glad we don't have to wait another year for a new season.

Man, those Bravo people don't know how to make a decent-looking *.pdf? That application looks like a scan of a photocopy. Though from their un-navigable website, I guess technology ain't really their thing.

It's nice to know there are some things in this crazy world we can still rely on. Anything else, and the earth would cease to spin on its' axis.

Anyone from the blog giving it a shot? Sewing Siren?

We don't care what BravoTV is looking for, we are looking for designers who already know how to thread a needle and recognize a sewing machine when they see one, but have not yet created their own lines. Furthermore, we seek designers who understand that this is a competition (for them too) with time constraints and impossible challenges, who are willing to construct entire garments out of shaving cream and peanut butter. Who embrace the madness when the challenge involves sewing well with others and who do not believe they are above such assignments. We seek contestants who can drape, but don't feel obliged to do so when the construction material is sheet metal.

Give us your young, your baby designers yearning to create freely! The wretched refuse of your less prestigious design programs. We lift our flickering cathode ray tubes by your golden door.

Okay, time for more coffee.

Mariana (The Unoriginal) said, No, no, no, no, no...NO established fashion professionals.

But there've always been established professionals on Project Runway. Kara Saun. Wendy Pepper. Hadn't Kevin Johnn been working in the business for years? Chloe Dao. Uli. Jeffrey. To name a few. What's the difference between all of them and Season 4 contestants?

But Rosie's Girl, I do appreciate your view of things--very clever!

I mean names you haven't heard before. To this day, if you google Kara Saun or Wendy Pepper everything you find is pretty much related to the show, now if you google Rami, for example, you get all sorts of things prior to his appearance on the show: Bryant Park shows, LA shows, TV appearances, uts to name a few.

I miss the time when the designers on the show didn't even have a website.

Mike B. said...

I think they went too far with Rami. (Both in the sense that he was too well established to really be a sensible choice for the show, and in the sense that he went further than he really deserved to.)

But who are they going to choose if not established fashion professionals? You can't cast an entire season of PR with people who haven't made clothes for a living and done moderately well for themselves.

Andreas said...

okay, i am not going to try out myself but a good friend of mine will (she has her own line and has worked at celine in the past) she's fun though! she'll be at the audition in new york...

I see your point, perhaps they should avoid WELL-established designers then.

I'll be there covering it for 3 online publications! Should be fun.

how about the delineator between "established" designers and new talent being whether they've ever shown at fashion week before? i'm not sure what the requirements are to show there, but seeing how victorYA showed this season says that she was probably too established to compete. rami has also shown at fashion week both in la & bryant park in years prior - therefore that should have disqualified him.

I sew, and I draft my own patterns and designs, and let me tell you..it is NOT as easy as Project Runway makes it look! Especially with the time constraints, limited design and shopping time, unusual materials, etc. Of course, that is why they call it a 'challenge'. Friends and family keep asking me when I'm going to audition! Not this year, maybe next ;) maybe not. But just being able to sew won't make a good contestant. I know lots of good sewers, but they stick with using premade patterns. Although, I have to admit....less experienced people would make for a more interesting show!

Seriously, though...the limited time they have to put a garment together is really impressive to me. If they had 3-4 days to make the dresses, they would probably ALL be phenomenal.

I kinda want to do it, but I'm 22, in grad school, and terrified!

Jenn said...

Damn, I wish I had chosen a fashion related major so T and Lo could spoof me! Forget the competition!

Anonymous said...

It's not as easy as it looks. I also sew, draft my own patterns, and *hiding under the desk* even know how to drape a garment (learned as a kid with a paper napkin and a Barbie doll from a doll designer, same principal on a person or dress form with muslin). I did dressmaking professionally for awhile, but have zero interest in it anymore. I sew for relaxation and enjoyment, and Project Runway isn't relaxed sewing!

"we promise to be nice"??

Don't worry - we won't hold you to that! ;-)

This may be a BIG longshot...but here goes...

I'm interested in going to the Project Runway Season 5 open casting call in NY this April. Their website has the application...but it says nothing about whether or not you are expected to bring samples of your work or a portfolio during this open casting call. Not even the FAQs have this info. An email to Bravo resulted in an automated response that basically said they can't answer all the emails they receive and to check the FAQs. I can't find a phone number for them anywhere on the internet.

So...my boo-hoo-hoo story being what it is...does ANYONE know if they expect you to bring samples during the open casting phase? Or is this something that's left to the second round of interviews (or later). I just want to be prepared.

Anonymous said...

I'd like to see them get designers who've had some experience working in the industry. Rami was ahead of many of them --he'd been showcased at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week L.A. at least 3 times. Maybe he wasn't such a good choice, on the other hand, he got what he wanted --exposure (and by the way, I do love his work).

I really enjoyed all of the designers and their experience. But I think the challenges needed to be altered a bit so that their professionalism could really shine through.

You should bring three finished garments to the audition. You can also bring a model with you to wear one look, and it doesn't hurt to wear an extra one yourself (that way you show 4). You also need to show a porfolio of sketches and/or photos of your work. Good luck.

Thanks, Sewing Siren...I really appreciate it...would you believe Rami answered my MySpace email to him asking the same question...he also advised to have smaples and portfolio...thanks to you both!

Maybe TLo could be your offical
sponsor. Product placement. I think we need a tshirt you could wear everyday during the competition with their website address on it, maybe silkscreened pictures of the boys on the back...?
(Getting a little carried away here...)

Thanks, k...

That's kinda why I'm remaining anonymous! LOL! I do appreciate the well-wishes, though...send me some good energy!

Sewing Siren, are you trying out this year?

I'm willing to bet they only want to see sewn garments, so that's me out. :C It's not that I can't sew, I just haven't. I'm also afraid of losing control of those goddamn industrial machines! I have a fight with an inanimate object every time I sit down at one of those newfangled white Jukis. Plus they probably had enough petticoats after Austin (petticoat overload can last for a long, long time).

...S6, then? Hurr.

Anne said...

Lucy, DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!!!!!!!

The worst thing that can happen is that you see the level of the room and get one tryout under your belt before they send you home.

You're 22, take a chance NOW or live with the regrets - and a memory of a failure is SOOOOO much easier to live with than the memory of having been too scared to try.

40 year old Anne :)

Go for it, Lucy!

Anon4:40-Good luck to you! It'd be great to hear from you after the auditions to share the experience with us. Above all, have fun with it!

I'd try out, but I can't find that denim gym bag and A-line skirt I made in sewing class back in the days when Home Ec was mandatory for girls. Plus I'd still be one sample short. Too bad because I'd have given Stacy a run for her money on not being able to work the sewing machines. But unlike her, I'd bring the drama, baby!

Brandenburg3rd said...

Mariana, you beat me to it.

Pleawe--up and coming (no matter what age) and maybe some who have a small business. But not a parade of people who on a par with, say, Rami.

And leave the drama behind. This season was a snoozer because it had boring challenges.

Bravo, PLEASE no "been there done that" professionals.

I'm conflicted. Like Chris (<3!!!) I'm a theatre costume designer. I love it. I adore high fashion and would like to break into it; but I think I'll finish my Masters first, get more experience, and maybe try series 6.

My final collection would totally be looks inspired by Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park with George." "Afternoon on the Isle de Grande Jatte" meets modern. Impressionistic steampunk.

All I gotta say is... if anyone here gets accepted, they have to, during filming, wear a tshirt of Alex's Tlo charicatures.

TLo should get to be judges during the tryouts.

Hello! I'm trying out and I need some info, because I can't get it anywhere else!

HAS ANYONE TRIED OUT BEFORE?

Do you know how long the lines are?

Can you go for one day and be seen?
-or do you have to wait in line for three days?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

Anonymous said...

I too am looking for some clue as to what the line situation is going to be like. If I go on Saturday in LA will I still have a chance, or should I camp out Thursday night?
