THANK YOU, so MUCH!

That dress on Rebecca Miller won the "Project Wrongway" award at our house.

Oh, and Marion Cotillard? How fabulous is she?

carmelita said...

The show was kind of boring, and I guess most of the clothes were, too. Thanks for all the pictures, I had not seen all of these dresses. I agree with you all on most, but I loved Katherine Heigl's dress, I thought she looked gorgeous. Hated Anne Hathaway's dress--she looked like she was coming from a luau and her lei was on sideways. And Diablo Cody--all she needed was bare feet and a bone.
Glad I don't have to dress for the public, too much pressure!

nso said...

Just a few disagreements here. I didn't like Anne Hathaway's flowery bodice (although I thought Hilary Swank's was even worse). Did like Katherine Heigl's. Although most of the black dresses had lovely classic silhouettes, there were just two damn many of them. I cheered a little everytime I saw something other than black. Tilda gets my worst-dressed vote. I thought it was even uglier than Diablo's and Rebecca's. Besides, Diablo was just doing exotic dancer runway fashion--who can blame her?

Hutchlover said...

What's up with all the dull, black dresses?

BTW, Helen Mirren, was HOT! We should all wish we looked like that & can flaunt the sexy - at any age!

honesty.not.pc said...

I have to call your asses out on Helen Mirren. That dress was spectacular. I loved the sleeves and the color was so lovely on her. I thought she was one of the best dressed of the night.

I also think you are too easily bored if Ms. Cruz's dress makes you snooze. You seem to love all of Laura Bennet's dramatic black gowns?

thombeau said...

Rebecca Miller had the most gorgeous accessory of the night: Daniel Day-Lewis!

Julie Christie: fabulous! And Marion Cotillard---divine!

And the same goes for you two!

Kaitlin said...

"Rebecca Miller had the most gorgeous accessory of the night: Daniel Day-Lewis!"

Thombeau, my thoughts exactly! She probably didn't give a damn about what she was wearing because she knew nobody would be looking at her anyway.

Aaron Frey said...

I agree with honesty.not.pc on Helen Mirren. I loved her dress. But I do agree with you two about Diablo, horribly cheap looking. I thought Tilda's dress was interesting, much like herself, a few alterations and that would have worked a lot better.

Most of the stars opt for simple looks now (due to the over analyzation of the red carpet) that people seem to long for the good ol' days of Cher, or maybe that's just me.

i didn't like the french fish dress. sorry! luv u bye xoxo

Sewing Siren said...

I agree on most. Too much black. I loved the French actress that won. Also the one from Narnia (Tilda..), that you didn't.
How about the costume designer that got the oscar for Elizabeth I, I liked her too, kind of funky, but in a good costume designery way.

LittleKarnak said...

"How about the costume designer that got the oscar for Elizabeth I, I liked her too, kind of funky, but in a good costume designery way." Couldn't agree more, Sewing Siren; that was one of my fav looks for the night. Queen Helen gets a pass because she is just too damn sexy in anything. I was actually shocked (because I usually despise Gaultier) but I really liked Marion Cotillard's gown, very unique looking. As for Tilda: well, I've been a big Tilda fan from waaay back and I give her a pass because the dress and the no make-up look are totally her AND she brought her boy toy to the Oscars. And she totally mocked George Clooney on stage in front of millions of people so she's good people in my book!

lynette said...

Marion Cotillard's dress reminds me of the gorgeous silver koi my uncle used to have.

LittleKarnak said...

As for Rebecca Miller, here's the ultimate quote on her get up from JHarvey of Socialite's Life:
"Daniel Day Lewis' wife is wearing some sort of drawer knob on her boobies. I don't know what that is, but I bet if you shine a light through it it will tell you where the Ark of the Covenant is hidden."

Ms Sangrail said...

I agree with most assessments, and the "Yawn" installments were perfect. You should market some kind of laughing weight loss program.

I thought Helen Mirren looked fabu.

Julie Christie is just so beautiful, she could wear just about anything and still glow.

Anonymous said...

I am going to have to respectfully disagree on your opinion of Helen Mirren's gown. It was gorgeous, classic, and incredibly age-appropriate without being frumpy. The shade of red was not garish like Katherine Heigl's dress, nor were the sleeves over the top like Anne Hathaway's lei of roses.

td said...

Tom and Lorenzo, you guys need to be full-time screenwriters or novelists or something. The world needs you on a larger-scale level.

Between "hot and spicy little sexagenarian" and "Yawn 2, Electric Boogaloo" I cannot stop laughing! Great stuff.

I say thank God for Rebecca Miller. She's this year's Cher, Barbra, Daryl, Kim, Uma, Gwyneth.
As in...

"I may be poor and unglamorous but at least I don't look like I was dressed by Britney Spears off her meds."

Here's to the rich and crazy and their fug on the red carpet!

DuBois said...

I too LOVED Helen Mirren. As someone with "upper arm issues," I thought the use of the crystal sleeves was inspired. Also, the color and shape of the red gown suited her perfectly - regal and sexy!

Kris said...

I have to disagree with you about Helen Mirren. I loved that dress and her in it. And I thought Keri Russell looked great, too. Sure her gown was a boring color, but with the necklace and the train, it was beautiful.

I am glad someone else didn't love Katherine Heigl's dress and makeup. I couldn't believe people are giving her "Best Dressed"! It wasn't awful, but far from the best. And the opposite with Jennifer Hudson - sure, the boobs were a little prominent, but the dress was pretty. And Kelly Preston looked terrible in that color on camera, but you are right that it looks better in pictures.

Anonymous said...

Although I agree with most of your assessments, I, too, am among those who found Ms. Mirren's gown to be the favorite, particularly when she walked onto the stage as a presenter. Whether it was the stage lighting or her own radiance, she looked every bit the glamorous movie star that I wish to see come Oscar Night.

And as for you two, T Lo, I'm amazed at the sheer number of entries that you've posted these past few weeks, without so much as a wrinkle in the quality of their content. Granted, this is your "busy season", but I have a hard enough time just staying current, trying to read everything. Thank you both for brightening many of my days and I certainly hope you continue to enjoy writing them at least as much as I've enjoyed reading them, these past 16 or so months.

You do know that all the red dresses where in support of heart health, right?

tripletmom96 said...

loved helen mirrin -- that dress was not one for the younger ones -- it would have looked a little old, but classic & lovely on her. sexy without being tarty. perfect for a woman on her class & elegance.

did anyone notice that cameron diaz's dress made her hips look a mile wide? it doesn't show so much on the still pix, but when she came out on the stage i had to rewind to see if i had seen it wrong....

great critique boys!

Do you have link that proves that? Because I can't find one.

esme, don't have a specific link. February is heart month and there were red dress fashion shows during Fashion Week. If you google heart health and red dress you can find information.

And what are those shoes that Daniel Day Lewis is wearing?!?!!!

honesty.not.pc said...

Our PR fave Nick is one of the hosts of the 2008 oscar fashion wrap on the T.V. guide channel if anyone cares :)

P.S. With Nick comes Lisa Rinna...just warning you!

Pittypat said...

Oh, come on now - not the French fish dress? That was fugly!! And I loved almost all the shades of red, but that is just me, I guess.

I have to disagree about Helen Mirren, also - that was a lovely elegant gown for a lady about the same age as I am! And I thought Miley Cyrus was pretty age-appropriate - at least she didn't look like a 15 year old tart. She just needed a pretty do and a nice necklace.

As for Katherine Heigl - she epitomized Hollywood glamour for me. I loved the shout-out to Marilyn, and she was perfect for a presenter.

TheQuietOne said...

First thing I thought when I saw Julie Christie: The only-slightly more fashionable younger sister of Professor Umbridge from the Harry Potter books. Eh.

Loved Dame Helen!! I hope I look that amazing at her age although I know I won't. :)

Pittypat said...

I forgot to say that anyone who would be seen with DDL in that horrible brown rimmed tux and those brown suede shoes cannot be expected to have much taste in their own dress. Y'all just got so busy looking at the guy himself and undressed him before you noticed what he was wearing.

Anonymous said...

You boys are dead wrong about Helen Mirren. She looked beautiful and that dress made me (a moderately in shape twenty-three year old) have a serious case of curve envy.

aimee said...

For the most part, I agree -- Marion Cotillard was my favorite of the night, but I also loved Heidi's red dress.

However, I have to say I think you're wrong about Helen Mirren. I thought she looked fantastic.

eric3000 said...

OMG with all the black and red! So, so boring. (I understand why Heidi Klum was wearing red but what was everyone else's excuse?)

I didn't like the sleeves on Helen Mirren's dress until she got on stage and they lit up so you could see them from space. The dress needed better lighting than was available on the red carpet.

I didn't mind Diablo Cody's dress. Considering that she obviously had to wear something weird, I think she did OK.

Terrie said...

I agree with pittypat on Miley Cyrus. Yes, we've seen it a hundred times before, but fifteen is young enough that there's plenty of time to be more daring. Her goal at that age should not be to look stunning, but to avoid looking tacky, since it's soooo easy to look tacky at that age.

Suzanne said...

I miss the Cher days. Everyone is so safe and over styled.

How could you leave out Heidi? She looked MAGNIFICENT!!

(The Calls are Coming From Inside The House....I almost peed in my pants)

chicksinger said...

Seemed like there was a real emphasis on hips this year, what with all the draping and frippery in that general vicinity.

And I always love a well-placed Electric Boogaloo reference. For those of us old enough to remember the 80s, it just never gets old, does it?

Jenn said...

I hope Cameron Diaz did have sex in the limo, because that wrinkly dinner napkin she wore did nothing for her.
I liked Katherine Heigl's dress, but DAYUM! That girl had a metric ton of rouge on her cheeks!

Rebecca Miller was wearing Christian Lacroix Couture.

Don't hate me, but I kind of like her dress, but then again Christian Lacroix is one of my favorite designers.

WHY does no one agree with me on jennifer garner - stunnnnnning

flaming_mo said...

Unfortunately, this year's Oscars was mostly a snoozefest fashion-wise. Most disappointing considering the cutback on opportunities for glamour due to award shows being impacted by the strike. Maybe some folks felt intimidated by the lack of "dress rehearsal" and decided to play it safe.
However,I agree with you guys, including about Mirren's dress (the sleeve color, or the lack thereof was the problem) and Cotillard being the most fabu for the evening.

Debby T said...

Totally surprised that you didn't comment on Mrs. Seal's dress. I thought hers was gorgeous!

babs said...

oh my GAWD, y'all! cameron diaz's dress! did anyone else see the close-up of the ass? it was obviously patched. and badly. right at the (as gofugyourself.com put it) "business end of her derriere."

i'm glad to see that i'm the only person who was absolutely in love with helen mirren's dress. i found it absolutely sexy in an age-appropriate way. it wasn't something that i'd like on just anyone, but she wore the fuck out of it.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone else catch Tim and Stacy London dishing Oscar fashion on The Today Show? Stacy bit her tongue to keep from laughing out loud when Meredith Viera baited she and Tim to comment on the 'sleeve/glove' issue Helen Mirren and Julie Christie (respectively)had going on, and Tim said he liked them. Talk about going above and beyond the call of duty to avoid being rude. I guess Tim was put between a rock and a hard place, that he could either lie, criticize two of the classier ladies in Hollywood (sleeves/gloves notwithstanding) or leave Stacy to do the dirty work. Gentlemanly, as always. Must love him!

Mostly totally agreed except for two:
Marion Cotillard-- didn't totally love
and
Jennifer Gardner I thought looked hott

Loved Amy Adams. liked jenifer garner's, too. The fishy scaley dress - the French one, can't remember her name - also faboo.

But: Anne Hathaway looked scary. She looked like a synchronized swimmer with her hair pulled back so tight, and she looks positively gaunt. the skeletal face distracted me from the dress too, too much.

and: why does everyone make such a fuss over katherine heigl? yeah, she's pretty, but so are several thousand college undergrads at the university i attend. what's the big deal? I don't see how she has brought back hollywood glamour or anything close to it.

I like black dresses myself, and shun red, so this year's collection baffled me.

TheExile said...

I mean, okay... i already thought Rebecca Miller's dress was QUITE hideous, but did you notice the zebra shoes peeking out from under her gown? That just stabbed me right in the heart. EW! Seriously?... Seriously! Who the F is this woman's stylist?

lima bean said...

Agreed with almost all. However, be careful when assessing pregnant women and children, though. It never hurts to be dishonestly kind to these groups. I wouldn't want you to go even one millimeter into Perez-hood.

I did disagree with your critique of Helen Mirren. She looked as hot as ever and I loved the dress. You can NEVER have too much red!

HATED the fish dress. Ugh.

Heidi's was my fav.

Are you serious?

Bill said...

Your dress assessments were mostly spot on but I'll join the chorus of cheers for Dame Helen. She looked glorious. Met her after a performance of "Dance of Death" on Broadway a few years back. She positively glows in person and is a real dish.

Also gotta give it up for Laura Linney. I thought she looked classically understated and glam. Of course, I am biased for my gals that still do Broadway in between movie roles.

Electric Boogaloo. Too funny. I had that soundtrack album!

I love that Jessica Alba gave out the (untelevised) technical Oscars to all the science and engineering geeks. This is her fanbase, no? How perfect for the tech heads and the fanboys.

Tilda Swinton is a gorgeous freak. Yes, she looked like a half-made bed in an 80's bachelor pad. But she is just weird and quirky and funny enough for me to love her. Clooney's Batman nipples in her acceptance speech?! Yay!!

Now I want real red carpet talk.

Why was Miley Cyrus there? Yes, she's a huge pop culture TV & music star right now. But I don't recall David Cassidy or the Osmonds ever showing up at the Oscars.

Can we review who's had work done recently? Can we talk about how formerly gorgeous Nicole Kidman now looks like a injection molded plastic doll?

Can we talk about the freshly plumped fish lips of Calista Flockhart and Cameron Diaz? The something's not quite the same as before look of Jennifer Garner's face? The utter horror of Dunaway's face?

Can we discuss the smoldering hotness of Bardem? Can we ruminate on what it must be like to be as classically handsome as Josh Brolin AND have Barbra Streisand married to your dad?

And, most importantly, can we discuss what the hell was going with Travolta's hair - or whatever substance that was on his head!!!

Mehitabel said...

Thank you, T Lo, for all of your blogging witticisms. These added interest to what was a rather unfashionable Oscar ceremony.

However, I must be in the fashion minority because I LOVED Tilda's Lanvin dress. ( However, I have a huge crush on Alber and, if given the opportunity, would move to Paris to be the keeper of his bowties.) For a simple black dress, it absolutely glowed, even though it suffered from a few styling mishaps. Really, Ms. Swinton, did you run to the Academy Awards, losing your powder somewhere on the street, in the process? Also, move the gorgeous diamond cuff to the bare arm, please. We can't see it and you look lopsided.

On another note, if Karl Lagerfeld's vision of Penelope Cruz is expressed in the dress that he created specifically for her, I have to wonder when her Wild West movie is coming to my nearest theatre. Is she secretly a saloon girl with a heart of gold?

My only problem with Helen Mirren's dress is that it did require the proper lighting to highlight the sleeves. Believe me, it is terribly inconvenient to transport your own flattering lighting wherever you go.

My hubby actually worked the Oscars. He was the Oscar "bodyguard" if you can believe that!

Anyway, he said Heidi is much more beautiful than she photographs and is REALLY skinny. Enough to make the average woman vomit, I say!

He said Katherine Heigl was the most breathtaking on the red carpet.

He also said that Nicole Kidman looked like crap in person, but photographed really well.

What was Daniel Day-Lewis' wife wearing? I said, "WTF" about 50 times.

Love you, my fabu gays!

Another vote for the fabulous Ms. Mirren. She worked that dress like she was being graded. And it flattered her tremendously.

Plus, her hair always look nice, which is more than I can say for many on the red carpet.

PhantomMinuet said...

The something's not quite the same as before look of Jennifer Garner's face?

I noticed that, too, but I wasn't sure if it was the result of a medical procedure or a bad lipstick color. In any event, she looked like she had zombie lips.

And her hair was a mess. :-p

Hey Bill, I can tell you now that Miley Cyrus was invited to the Oscars in hopes that all the millions of little girls and little girls' parents that kill each other for her concert tickets and watch her show would watch the Oscars just to see her and boost their terribly low ratings. Oh, and it didn't work. Early results show this to be THE LOWEST RATEST OSCAR TELECAST EVER.

Marion Cotillard was absolutely my favorite of the night! I thought she looked unique but not crazy, perfectly French, and the silhouette was gorgeous!

I can't believe that Rebecca Miller is skating by as much as she is after wearing that hideousness. They didn't even call her out on E! Fashion Police! Maybe because she was just the wife of the nominee? I know they are an artsy, outside the box couple, but COME ON! She's an actress too - she can do better!

Bethany said...

You can't be so harsh about Cate Blanchett! Do you know how hard it is to fit a dress around a growing belly and breasts only to find out 2 weeks later that you now look like you actually have a small person under your dress??? Oh wait, she does. hehe. I'm 31 weeks pregnant. I bought a cute little dress when I was about 12 weeks along that, at that point, showed my cute 'little' baby bump. I went to wear it a few weeks later and my body had changed so much that I looked like I had gained about 50 lbs... 20 in my breasts and 30 in my belly. I hadn't... I think Cate looks beautiful, as have all of the women who have been pregant in the spotlight as of late. She managed to show off the beauty of the pregnant body, without making herself look like an overweight clown.. wearing the circus tent...

barby said...

I agree with the commentors, I loved Helen Mirren's dress. She looked like a knock-out, and classy as always. Could have done without the lace sleeves, but meh.

What is up with the shoes on Rebecca Miller's date! Brown shoes with a black tux, but brown shoes period on a red carpet? yikes. I would make my date walk the carpet solo.

still torn on the fish dress. i feel like I should like it because it's french and fashiony and stuff, and it's flattering to her, but....I just don't. I don't know whether to congratulate her or de-scale and bread her.

Soooo, what colors DO you two approve of? No black, no beige, no red, no green, no navy......

last and most certainly least, can someone tell me why mylie cyrus is popular? seriously. ugh.

"Bill said

Thank you, Bill. It looks like they all had the same injections and procedures done at the same place before the Oscars. Renee Zellweger's face has looked like a blow-up doll's for the past few years, and formerly beautiful Nicole Kidman is a fright. At least Daniel Day Lewis and Rebecca Miller look human, with, dare I say it, a few wrinkles and lines on their faces. And Miss Mirren--too fabulous for words.

Marion Cotillard had the most striking dress. I'm glad she won, because that is a winner's dress if I ever saw one.

I hated Anne Hathaway's dress too. Unflattering proportions and that color washed her out (WTF was up with her makeup, BTW?).

I ADORED Katherine Heigl's and Helen Mirren's dresses. Katherine looked stunning and Helen was regal.

I thought she looked like a 12 year old boy in drag. Every time you saw her, she was fussing with her hair. I was also disappointed with all the black, and whatever Rebecca Miller did made her look like she could be DDL's mother instead of his wife. Keep on bitching, boys!

Yes, yes, that's true, but I'm rather surprised you didn't mention that that was the least flattering bust on any dress there. Her tiny boobness was squeezed to flat east begeezus. It was like she was trying to bind them down in order to do some sort of gown-fu match off (which might explain all of the black), but the binding slipped. My chest hurt in sympathy, until I realized I don't actaully give two fucks about Jennifer Garner.

If I were a "lesser" personality today, I'd definitely go for the fug.

Also, I disagree with TLo on one dress: Katherine Heigl's. I think she and the dress are gorgeous.

Love Diablo Cody, but that dress? What was she thinking?

I was waiting and waiting.... but on the wrong blog! The two of you are so prolific, one can't help but be both impressed and grateful.

One of the problems with red is that it blends into the red carpet. Not great for photo ops.

Who looked great? Well, Jessica Alba did, so did Katherine Heigl.
Daniel Day Lewis's wife Rebecca Miller? Totally lost me. But when you're with him, not much else matters. She could've stopped off at Costco and gotten something from there.

Okay, boys, now that PR4 is over and you have provided us with much needed outlets for snarkery over that fab show...

Dames and Divas? Musical Mondays (Top Hat!)?

Please?

Whimper...

Great dish all around, but I have to enter the Dame Helen sheep meadow. I thought the dress suited her personality wonderfully. Her beauty and style have always had a slight "tongue-in-cheek" twist to them.

I'll stick my neck out and say I liked Renee Zagnutter's outfit more than you did. I think it's another piece that looks better in photos than it did on TV. Considering some of the car wrecks that she has worn in past years, she practically gets the Most Improved Award for this one.

have you totally abandoned this blog? If so, please be courteous and inform so that I may remove it from my bookmarks, regrettably. :-(
