Sew Not Over: Jillian and Kevin

Click here to refresh your memory, darlings.

Jillian:
"To break away from the confines of beginning with a concept, for this mini collection, the intention was simple: What do I want to wear tomorrow? Three different outfits to fulfill three different but everyday needs. Clothing should be fun to wear and that was my state of mind when I made these looks. My hope is for people to say, "I would love to wear that." Enjoy!!"

It seems a little silly to say this about three looks, but this little collection doesn't have any cohesion to it at all. None of the looks refer back to either of the others. It's just 3 different looks with nothing in common. Having said that, we love the first one. Flirty and girly and sexy and cute. We kinda hate the middle look. It's boring and basic and it looks a little dated to us. Third look's cute, but that's only because of that ruffly collar or scarf or whatever it is. Without it, this look would be as boring as the second one.

Kevin:
"My collection was inspired by classic European tailoring with a sexy little vixen twist!"

Following the trend, we like the first and third looks but hate the second one. All three of these looks would be better served without the little gloves. Love the dark plaid and the use of leather. In the first look, we love how he used the plaid so that it runs in different directions. Love the little strip of leather along the bustline. Second look? Oh lord. She looks like a Michael Jackson impersonator. Even without the hat and gloves, we wouldn't be crazy about the dress. Third look? Cute. Love the proportions on it. The full shoulders tapering down to the skinny, skinny pants. It's all sexy with a little edge to it.

I actually like Kevin's the best. Does that make me straight???

I dunno, I think Jillian's second look is super hot.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Pretty much agree with you, Boys.

I like Jillian's concept ("What do i want to wear tomorrow?"), but the only one I can see her wearing is the first dress. I completely agree about the second one looking dated.

Kevin's. . . hmmm. . . maybe I'd appreciate the first dress more without the black tights. The styling makes all three looks seem so heavy, but the first one might look very different minus the gloves and black tights, and with different shoes.

Anonymous said...

I don't like any of these looks, none of them. Jillians were all hideous and I agree there was no cohesion. Makes you wonder what she was thinking. Like she just picked up 3 random outfits on her way out the door.

Kevin's collection proves he is a straight man. He was never good at styling and this is case in point. He tried, really he did and the construction looks great, its just the style is atrocious. At least his tights don't highlight the vag like Christian's.

I don't think there was a single designer who delivered three looks that I loved. That said, I thought Jillian's were all extremely wearable. And I'm immensely grateful that she.didn't.use.the shoes again.

Beyond that, the fits of all of Jillian's looks were impeccable. SHE MADE REAL PANTS. I, personally, am sick of the skinny pant/legging look. It's a lazy way to cover up the leg. Anyone could make a model look good. Making real pants for real women--that takes skill. And Jillian's pants could translate.

The first look is flirty. The ruffly skirt is fun without being pretentious (Christian.) The second look is a play on the LBD. I love the detailing around the bodice as well as shoulder straps that can accomodate a bra without looking compromising sexiness. The third look is a fresh take on the vest/blouse combination--only sleeveless, so it looks like the top is all together.

Kevin's ideas started off in a great direction. That first look is lovely and he is the king of the strapless top. The model could do a headstand in that dress without a wardrobe malfunction. For that alone, Kevin deserves kudos and a piece of my heart.

But the second and third looks remind me of a bad 80's music video. I can't figure out what occaision would be appropriate for a leather micro mini with a cotton top. And the skinny pants, while cute, again, are impractical and so 20 years ago. Perhaps Paula Abdul could still rock these, however.

For some reason, Beverly Hills 90210 popped into my head when I looked at Jillain's collection. I could see Jenny Garth in the first dress & Tiffany Amber whoever in the third. And the second model reminds me of Tori Spelling.

Kevin's collection looked like the backup singers for the European leg of Prince's world tour circa 1990. Or maybe something Paula Abdul would have worn back in the day.

SUS said...

Didn't like either collection. Kevin's seemed 'done' to me, and Jillian's... eh. The first look was too "Love Boat" (though the skirt length was rather short), and the second look did weird things to the model's shoulders. I liked the third look.
I'm still firmly planted in the Elisa/Kit camp.

Anonymous said...

I really liked Kevin's collection. Hot without being too trendy.

Anonymous said...

They were both good, but I wasn't very impressed with either one, although I do love Jillian's first dress.

Ms Sangrail said...

Meh.

Anonymous said...

Boring.

Anonymous said...

Totally sucked. Both of them.

Hutchlover said...

I liked Kevin's. I think it's edgy without being too "out there". So far I like his & Marion's best.

However, I did not like Jillian's at all. Talk about dated! Though the print on the first dress is cute & flirty.

Anonymous said...

Maybe it's just the lighting or the cut of Kevin's second look, but on a glance it looks like those godawful shorts-rompers that are creeping around this season, so I immediately hated....turns out it's a minidress, but I still don't love the look. I do think Jillian's are all wearable and answer HER "what do I want to wear tomorrow?" query, but that wasn't the assignment!

Anonymous said...

I thought Jillian's second look screamed, "I want to be in a Robert Palmer video!"

Too bad she's a few years late on that one.

I thought you guys were dead on, but my initial reaction to Jillian's first look was cute, but also a bit.....disco queen......but I'm dating myself here.

Anonymous said...

Why is Jillian clutching her panties?

Kevin's was kinda hot ... in a monochromatic, light-S&M kinda way.

As per usual, Jillian's was cluelessly fug. NOT a collection, unimaginative, boring -- I mean that 2nd dress??? Incredible. It's unimaginable how she made it through to the finals.

Who would take fashion advice from such a person?

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Suzq said, "SHE MADE REAL PANTS."

Good point. Who could wear Kevin's "pants' (his 3rd look), or Christian's leggings? I may not love Jillian's slacks-n-vest look, but at this point a pair of actual pants seems refreshing.

Anonymous said...

EW! Kevin looks like he's designing costumes for Britney Spears. Fugly ones, at that.

Gorgeous Things said...

I liked Jillian's collection - the second look is like the love child of Laura Bennet and Herve Leger. I like Kevin's first look. Number two? Yikes! And number three is good for any woman who is 6 feet tall with no hips. But it would be a Glamour Fashion Don't on just about anyone else.

Just sayin...

Anonymous said...

Jillian's 3rd look is striking from the back, the vest has a very thin racerback, or T shaped to it.

PhantomMinuet said...

I loved Kevin's collection, even the Michael Jackson dress. All his ensembles were verra sexy. And Kevin's kinda hot, too.

He's straight, you know. ;-)

Anonymous said...

Forget the collections, Kevin is McHOTHOT!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Not loving these collections. Maybe on or two pieces (Jillian's first, Kevin's last)

Kanani said...

Brooklyn Bomber --BEAUTIFUL pot! Love it. Do you have a URL?
____
I love Kevin's pieces. There's one of Kit's that go nicely over there.

Jillian's pieces are all wearable. I think they're pretty. They don't push any buttons, but they're well done.

Anonymous said...

The problem with Jillian's second look, as I see it, is that the lines across the chest makes her boobs look like they're hanging low. Combined with the plunge on the neckline, her tits look saggy. Maybe it would be more flattering on a woman with a fuller yet higher bosom, but would need to be differently tailored on top to suit.

Stubenville said...

Jillian? Feh.

I kept waiting for the model wearing Kevin's second look to break into a Bob Fosse-esque "jazz hands" routine. You have to admit that Kevin's patterned pants have a nice match - there are no queer patterns happening in the tootie zone.

BTW, were the designers designing for a particular season? If so they were all over the place.

TopCat said...

I'm going to agree with TLO this time on everything they said here.

I like Jillian's and Kevin's 1st looks the best. I'm not sure who would wear Kevin's 2nd look, or even the pants from his 3rd look. He certianly has an edge though and his own take.

Anonymous said...

LOL...I can see Gwen Verdon now, dancing in Jilliams costume.

Anonymous said...

Oh, but you know ...

"Jillian really knows what a woman wants, a REAL woman, a "Working Woman". She also designs for a "Woman's Pocketbook."

Feh. Blithery blather.

Last time I checked, I'm a real woman, I work, and I'm not opening my Fendi purse for any of those designs.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Oh, Kanani, I love it, too. But I can claim credit only for my good taste! ;)

It's by a Japanese artist, Kawase Shinobu (just Google that name). This piece is in the Brooklyn Museum. I wish you could see it "in the flesh." I couldn't take my eyes off it -- it's that compelling. Since I couldn't buy it or steal it, the best I could do is find a picture. It makes me feel peaceful (except for the itchy fingers).

Anonymous said...

please talk about smiley mcdimpleson next! i LOVED his collection, and have been dying to hear what you boys have to say

Anonymous said...

I hate to say it, but I like all of Jillian's. Also, I don't think it's a scarf- it looks like the collar of a shirt. You can see more of the same material coming out from under the vest, so one would assume that perhaps it's part of the same piece?

And as far as wearability, I think Jillian nearly always takes the cake... I would wear most of her designs in a heartbeat.

Anonymous said...

Maybe you two should trade email addresses so that you can talk about this irrelevant stuff on your own and let this forum stay on topic.

Jillian: Crap-tastic.

Kevin: McSteamy.

Jillian's look like costumes for Shields and Yarnell.

Aaron Frey said...

I liked Kevin's the best, even though none of the collections I really loved. Kevin's styling was a bit much, though. And, yes Kevin is McHotHo, but very short in person. I spotted him at my old gym and kinda stalked for 5 minutes.

Anonymous said...

Jillian: simple and boring
Kevin: A bit S&Mish but hot

Anonymous said...

I hate to say this but I don't like Jillian's collection at all. It looks like she was too busy doing her Bryant Park collection and didn't put much thought into this one.
Kevin is hit or miss. Not sure how I feel about his collection. I have to watch the video again.

Anonymous said...

Jillian: dated especially the second look.
Kevin: kind of hot but the second look is AWFUL!
Bravo needs to work on their lighting/camera issues. You can barely see the garments on the runway.

Anonymous said...

Jillian: Her looks were well-executed, but not very cohesive as a collection.
Kevin: The first look was cute but simple, and I didn’t care much for the 2nd and 3rd looks.

Anonymous said...

Jillian's was pretty, but the pants fit really bad.

Anonymous said...

So far, Marion and Christian had the best collections.

Anonymous said...

I like Jillian's first look as well, but what's up with those shoes she chose to pair it with??

Anonymous said...

I'd wear all 3 of Jillian's looks. I think the second one should be toned down with a less severe hairstyle and maybe open-toed shoes. But I agree the three don't have the cohesion of a collection.

I seriously hate the leather-minidress-over-blouse in Kevin's second look. I would wear the hat, third outfit, and especially the first look though.

Mom said...

For me, Jillian's collection felt like a rummage through her leftover fabric scraps. Nothing more, nothing less. So yawn.

Kevin's intrigued in a naughty way. I was not displeased by it.

Now, yes, bring on Squinty McDimpleson!

KP said...

Jillian's first dress is cute. I'd totally wear it. Like you said, no cohesion though.

Not fond of Kevin's looks at all.

GothamTomato said...

With Jillian; the first dress is absolutely adorable. The second is a bit too Addicted To Love. And the third is kinda boring, but wearable for work.

Kevin; I also loved his first look, but not the others. Hated the hat.

I think that if there were any recurring theme in this season of PR, it would be poor accessorizing (which doees not speak well of BlueFly), non-color, and too many damn cropped pants/leggings.

Jillian's is wearable and well constructed as you would expect of her. But I felt she phoned it in. She's done better creatively. Like Chris and Rami and Christian, she probably was more focused on her bryant park stuff than this contest.

Kevin's has a point of view but it's a mixed bag.

Actually I don't mind the fact that none of the designers hit on all 3 outfits. My roomie said if you love everything in a designer's collection than the designer is not stretching themselves enough :p

Brooklyn,
It's wonderful. I love the glaze. I wonder how many tries he had before they got it just right. One of my instructors in art school was a man who'd done all the glazes for Fransiscan when they were still around. Glazing is science and art. Really hard. I'll look up the ceramicist on the web.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely NOTHING "adorable" about Jillian's first dress. Big print in nauseous colors (seriously, fuchia and lavendar?), WAY too short, and the hem-line is seriously cocked-up.

Poorly constructed and lacking in taste. Yuck!

But, Chacon a son gout, right?

Anonymous said...

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like Jillian's better than Kevin's.
Kevin's look like what he would wear if he were a women. :)

I think Jillian's is nice, but again not the best of the 12 online collections shown.

Could we stick to talking about Project Runway and take the pottery discussions elsewhere please?

I love Jillian's second look! (And the first, the third not so much - I'm not fond of the vest without shirt look.) I would wear something like that to work any day, and then out to dinner afterwards. Very chic, very flattering.

Kevin, well. I liked the first dress (but, please, sheer stockings, not dark!). The second looks like her mother made her put on a blouse to hide her boobs, and she'll take it off as soon as she gets out of the house. The third I don't like. The top isn't so bad, though I'm not fond of tiny vests with oversized blouses, but the pants! Print/plaid/paisley leggings simply are not flattering - on anyone.

To Brooklyn bomber and Kanani -

I love that pot, too! Japanese ceramics are pretty generally stunning, but that's particularly gorgeous.

Kanani said...

Or why don't the two anonymi just scroll on by? We've had some of the best discussions about other things. Art, fashion ....how we feel about them runs pretty deep.

For my two cents I"ll say that Jillian's first dress looks like something Fergie would wear.

Anonymous said...

Question: Was it a requirement for the designers to make their three fashions cohesive?

Just wondering.

p.s.-I love Japanese pottery too! We inherited several pieces from my M-in-law. :-D

Anonymous said...

I like Kevins I'd wear it lol! minus the gloves.

Jillian's is ok but yes a bit boring.

Anonymous said...

Jillian's looks good but I expect to be wowed by everything she makes. Not her best.

Anonymous said...

I hate to agree with Michael Kors, but Kevin's designs are very much from a straight man's point of view and that not always works on a female body.

Anonymous said...

Kevin's collection is awesome! I voted for him like seven times.

Anonymous said...

I thought that Jillian's 2nd dress was fantastic! Fun and flirty, a fresh and less formal take on the "little black dress." I loved the fit and the detailing on the bust. I thought it was adorable. I wasn't really a fan of the 3rd look, though...I dunno, the pants were SO HIGH and I didn't really like the velvety vest mixed with the matte black pants. I know people usually want to accentuate long legs, but the highness of the pants made the model look weird to me, like a walking clothes-pin or something.

Anonymous said...

These were two of my favorites. I really like Jillian's one and three. I would wear the first one, but probably with some pants since it's so short.

I like Kevin's a lot too. It's cute and very cohesive. It kind has a Christian-esque look to it, I think.

Anonymous said...

I'm the post above this one too, but I forgot to mention, I loved the back of Jillian's third piece.

I am with you babies 300%.
The Jillian ones are a bit Missoni with a twist of poor men's Alaia with a little Lauren/Duchess (almost the same thing, but Lauren is wannabe old East Coast money who wnats to be British versus Kors is East Coast new money who wants to be old money) thrown in the mix.
I am loving the Kevin. I would wear 1 and 3 (three with a longer shirt).
I am not digging the onesie lederhosen.
But at least it's not too derivative and it is cohesive.
Love,
Milla

Because that isn't the point. I come to this blog because I enjoy this show and talking about it. I don't give a damn about pottery and really don't want to have to sift through stuff because some people are too rude and self centered to keep that stuff off of here. It doesn't belong. What if a few of us guys started a discussion about jock itch? Wouldn't that gross you out and make you wonder why it was being discussed here? Well, same difference. Just please respect others. Its nicer that way.

Anonymous said...

i really hate Kevin's outfit - the one he's WEARING! Ugh.

Anonymous said...

Jillian's second ensemble looks like she drew the model's rib lines on the outside of the dress. Is this a new form of anorexia? Anordressia?

Anonymous said...

Hi all,

First, I *want* to like Jillian's designs, because she's clearly adept at construction and she does pay attention to detail, but honestly most all of her garments leave me luke-warm.
She does have a following and, I think, if not for Mr. Puffy-sleeve-pantyhose-pants --she would be the clear winner of PR4.

Kevin - inexplicably, I like the skinny pants -- the rest, meh. I'm not so certain I would have wanted to see an entire collection. (a strapless dress w/leather driving gloves...where would you wear that except while driving?)

As for the pottery debate, I minored in studio ceramics and would like to add my ~raspberry~ to the chorus of fun-lovers.

We are a gathering of like minds and YES we do weave other conversations into each thread. Perhaps the FAB TLo will someday offer us an off-topic link. I believe they mentioned broadening the scope of the Blog to include all fashion, perhaps art in general could be a part of that. (source: the TLo video interview on Bravo)
cheers!

I love Kevin's collection except for the leggins, although I do give him credit for carrying through with the print. And dress two is too short (but still great).

Jillian's is also yummy, except that first dress is too damn short

Basically, both mini collections were quite lovely, but neither is particularly innovative. And that's okay. The construction looks good from what I could tell over on Bravo. K & J will both do well out in the real world based on the quality of their work.

Save_The_Hobbit said...

I did not like Jillian's...it was just...nothing special. Boring, really. Kevin's was better, but still not anything great. At least his collection had some cohesion. Jillian's looked like she just threw 3 random outfits together.

Anonymous said...

I like Jillian's designs a lot, a little too commercial for my taste, but she has her own voice and vision and her skills are usually pretty impressive. She just doesn't seem to be able to put together a collection, but I'm sure that will come. I liked the second dress, she likes the piping, no question. It's a little spooky, but she does spooky very well. It would be nice for a halloween party if she weren't required to come in costume. I think she edited the wrong piece out of her final collection.

The last piece in Kevin's collection would look good on Jennifer Miller of Circus Amok, it's both masculine and girly. In fact if he grew his hair long and didn't trim his beard he'd look a lot like her, he could be as pretty as she is. It's a good ring master costume for a beautifully barbed lady. I like it a lot. The other two looks I don't really care for.

Thanks,
Dale Wittig.

Jillian's was a lukewarm second place for me. It's cute and wearable. And speaking of wearable, I agree with one of the Anon's that Kevin's seemed like something Britney Spears might wear. That is not a good thing. Kevin seems like a nice guy, but based on these 3 looks I'm not sure the sophistication is there.
