Sew Not Over: Christian and Chris

Sunday, February 24, 2008 by
Oh, kittens. You're gonna HATE us in about 2 minutes.

Christian:
"My theme for the online challenge is kinda crazy. My theme is crazy prints and I just wanted to have fun with it and mix prints and do color. They're just funky prints, crazy mix … like a total big abstract painting."

Bitches, we love it. Not the second look so much. That one's too blocky and the proportions are really weird on it. But looks 1 and 3? LOVE. After a full season of blacks and beiges, how nice to see that he not only used prints, but he used beautiful prints and used them well. Not only THAT, but it appears that Princess CAN get away from the "puffy sleeve, bib collar, ruffles" pool he'd been drawing from too much. Oh sure, it's still recognizably Christian, but that's kinda the point. We wish we'd seen looks like this in his Bryant Park collection because unlike them, these demonstrate a more powerful creative ability and stand uniquely as his own work. Nothing derivative here. Pure PPS. We know a lot of you hate this collection but we think it's gorgeous.

Chris:

"My three-piece collection is a trio of sleek, simple, evening dresses, with an emphasis on lush fabrics and column silhouettes. Rouched velvet, matte sequins, and embroidered lace add to the sophisticated, classic looks."

Put bluntly: we thought these were awful. That "lace over a short dress" look has been done to death and this one just looks like lingerie. The second and third looks are so heavy and old-looking. We do like the bottom on Look 2, but the top is bulky and poorly fitted. And speaking of bulky, hello Look 3! She looks like she's got a change of clothes stuffed in her top. She's a tiny little size 0 model and she looks like a linebacker. There's nothing new or even stylish here. They don't look like the work of a fashion designer, they look like the work of a dressmaker.

I liked Christian's collection. The 2nd dress is to die for. Chris. . .does not belong in the final 4. That collection looked like the lingerie Daniel F did in season 2. So OVER. The last dress was nicely done in a velvet (?). But again, it's so simple.

Chris March is still my favorite contestant this season, but let's just say that I didn't vote for his 3 piece collection. I voted for Elisa's!

I have not been a fan of Christian's this season, and I hated this collection on first glance...BUT after watching the video from the show, I it grew on me. More than grew on me...I downright love it (except for #4- weird proportions). And as much I love me some Sissy Bear, his collection was just blegh.

Anonymous said...

Oops...not #4. I meant #2. Reminder to self: Proofreading is good.

No hating from THIS kitten-you guys are right on. I expected better from Chris, but am disappointed. I expected the best from Christian, and he continues to impress.

I don't like the legging print in Christian's first look, but the silhouette is nice. I think the second look is hideous and I can't imagine anyone it would look good on. Love the third.

Chris's collection was really awful. blech, blech, blech. Sorry Chris.

Christian's collection reminds me of a Claude Monet painting.

Total Agreement except the snark about the dressmaker - they make what their clients want. Whether it is a Simplicity pattern in a questionable fabric choice or a knock-off of some picture in a magazine, dressmakers are providing the client what her point of view is - not the dressmaker's. Come up with another way to insult a designer. Besides, who makes designer's dresses - dressmakers.

Christian's first and third looks were fun and fresh - I love the top in three. I could see those pieces totally being ripped off in H&M or Zara. But Chris? Old and dowdy Shame, because I love him and I think he is talented. But he needs to push himself out of his box more. Both he and Marion's looked like they smelt of mothballs.

I love Christian's three piece collection! I wouldn't wear them, but that's because I avoid prints in my own style choices, not because I think they are ugly.

His aesthetic is the closest to mine of any PR designer, of any season. And while I prefer his solid fabric choices because they are something I would buy and wear myself, I think this collection with the prints is really lovely.

Unknown said...

I think Christian's collection is terrible. Are they prints, or fractal patterns? As for the colors. Well, as the drag queens say: if you can't pick a color, just wear them all!

Chris's collection is Ok. I think the third dress has a stunning silhouette (it lookd better on the runway than in the picture).

I think you guys have finally drunk the Christian kool-aid.

Anonymous said...

Ok, everyone, don't throw tomatoes at me, BUT, Christian's collection is AWFUL. First design is kind of cute, but the leggings look like old spaghetti sauce stains.
Second design looks like a painted packing box.
Third design looks like someone's pet python died, Christian skinned it and used it for pants. YUK
AND, Chris' collection was BORING..no other word for it, though I love Chris.

Anonymous said...

Chris's designs bored the heck out of me.

I really like Christian's first look, and I am impressed with how feminine it is and how much of a departure it is from what he normally does.

Christian's second dress is designed for a Lego, not a woman.

His third outfit... just says leaky old vagina blood to me. Yummy. Give that girl a tampon.

Anonymous said...

I loved Christian's first look. Not on my fat stumpy old legs, mind you, but so pretty.

Chris's collection - I agree with you completely. Boring and ugh. It didn't help that the models could barely walk in 2 & 3.

Kit still got my vote.

Stubenville said...

Oh TLo- we could never hate you!

But disagree? Hell ya!

It was nice to see Princess Puffysleeves loose the eponymous sleeves, but those pants make the third model's legs look like a serving fork! NOT flattering. And that pattern seems to be calling just a little too much attention to the tootie zone...

As for Sissybear, yea he faltered. As much as I love him, the looks were dated and on the third model H E A V Y looking.

Sigh. At this moment I'm undecided on which collection (collectionette?) deserves my vote, but I don't think Sissybear will be getting it.

Anonymous said...

I hated Christian's looks. Number one looks like a hippie on a bad acid trip; number two: "Look, Scarlett, I found the sheers that go under your drapes! WITH the ROD Whee!" and number three made me think of a ringmaster in Cirque du Soleil.

Blech. I thought CHRIS was the costume maker!

Chris' looks were too sedate, especially compared side-by-side with Christian's. And all of them were looks we'd seen before, mostly in the 80's and 90's. His mini-collection was disappointing.

Big Shamu said...

As a babe in the fashion woods, I've never felt at ease commenting on the designers work. However Christian's third look is a visual stunner and something I would love to see in person. I think he is an amazing artist and I can't wait to see what he does in the future.
By the way, to debunk the myth of Christian's young female text messaging demographic, I'm a middle aged, non-text messaging lesbian who lives in jeans and a blue work shirt. Christian Rocks.

Off topic - does anyone know what happened to Jay McCarroll? Did he get attacked by Ferosh Coutoura or fall under a bus? He hasn't updated his Elle blog since the 6th - and a lot has transpired since then.

It's about time PPS created something with a little color. It almost makes up for the design issues with all three looks. LEGGINGS? Are you effing serious?

Chris needs to stop thinking of drag queen looks and more of what looks good on real women. The whole mini collection is a low down dowdy shame.

Anonymous said...

LOVE LOVE LOVE Christian's collection. And what's with the leggings-are-so-wrong movement? Darlings, they're so in. Have you seen the new trend - leather leggings?
About the second collection...I love Chris, does that count?

DolceLorenzo said...

Christian rocks! That bitch is going to win again.
Chris is a sweetheart, but this collection is a big disappointment. I guess he was busy working on his other collection.

Vic said...

Totally agree with your assessment. Much to my surprise, my admiration for Christian's talent grew as the show progressed, and diminished for Chris. His designs just never seem to enter reality, and some are just in plain bad taste. Carmen's outfits were dramatic and surprising. I loved her color choices. Did I miss something, but where was Sweet P's collection?

Anonymous said...

I just can't get on board with Christian's collection. The first two are ugly, regardless of what fabric they're made of. The third is amazing, but I can't get over the way the print looks all crazy around her crotch.

I don't think there's any arguing about Chris' collection, though...yuck.

Anonymous said...

Okay I actually am going to give a different repsonse to Christian's collection.

I immediately got what he was going for. When lea walked out she reminded me of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. Not literally but the feel of it. Then it struck me how much the whole concept was a trio of modernists/impressionist paintings. I picked up on this before his voiceover conveyed the idea.

I liked the concept and it showed that Christian definitely has potential to be 1 of the more interesting designers of the futures. However I disliked the collection nonetheless. The tops on #1 and #3 are fun and vibrant but the leggings are too much with the overall looks becoming too assaulting.

As for #2, it amazes me after how much he's worked with Lisa that he would put her in that dress. She was the wrong model for it. The fabric is beautiful but it clearly hangs terribly on her. It became clear over the course of the show that Lisa, while a more than able runway model, has a body that will not look good with certain outfits. It's not only evident here but think back to the denim and bitten challenges.

As for Chris it was disappointing. he definitely should have reconsidered fabric choices. I suspect he was just on autopilot and more concerned with his finale collection.

It's clear this online runway contest was conceived sometime between the summer and before November. The show was taped either the week of the preview show in November or during fashion week. Either way he would have been in full swing in his bryant park collection. it would have been easier for Christian or Rami to tackle this. PPS as we know is freakishly faster than laura in construction. From what others said Rami who is also efficient seemed to have based his mini set from work he's done earlier. Jillian's set also kind of feels like autopilot-nice work but no real cohesion.

Incdientally it would also explain why at least Sweet P didn't participate. In her EW interview she didn't realize right away she had to make a decoy collection. She actually was working on a job in China when they contacted her and she had to quit it in order to make the decoy collection.

She might not have felt she would have had the time to commit to this 2nd contest

I think Chris' collection is more representative of what regular ol' women of a certain age and weight not living in a fashion city would be drawn to, even though the commenters here say it is over, bleh, etc. Should he be the winner of PR?? NFW!! Christian all the way!!!

Anonymous said...

I pretty much agree with you- and it depresses me but hey, if you can't also look at the clothes of someone you love and realize that they're not that great..

I mean, honestly, the first dress of Chris's? I liked. But the second one- the strapping was too bulky, and then he just took it even further with the 3rd look. Gah! Chris! I know you can do better!

As for Christian's, I really only liked the last one. I can see the merits of the first design but I don't love it. Second one is just UGH but the third design is nice.

Kanani said...

I loved Christian's collection as well. He really played with color, and caught the beat of prints, paisleys and offered a very different silhouette. The leggings are great. This collection is the mad hatter visits haight ashbury. Would have liked to see a lot more imagination go into the hats --but then hats are the milieu of a milliner, and maybe he'll work with a good one like Naomi Goodsir.

Anonymous said...

I don't usually agree with the TLO boys' comments, but this time they seem to me totally spot on. When I read the comments, when the collections first appeared last week, and saw all the rancour directed at Christian and his work, I had to assume they reflected bitterness at his winning the fan favorite award and ten thousand. (Still, it was pretty clear from the way he was looking at Chris that Christian expected his big friend to win that one.) I think some people were offended by the paiseley design near the vagina on the third look, too reminiscent of eggs and other biological functions of the region. I thought these designs looked truly relaxed and charming. I loved the range of colors and the mix of patterns. The blouse on the third look was especially pretty. I also happen to like the loose gathered bodice on design #2. It's something you see a lot on dresses from a hundred years ago, but that dress looks completely contemporary.

As for Chris's three pieces, they seem meant to evoke 'forties Hollywood glamor styling, one big waddling cliche. They look especially unimaginative when placed next to Marion's mini-collection, a suprisingly inspired evocation of the 'twenties. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: Alfred Hitchcock's The Pleasure Garden.

Thanks, again,
Dale Wittig.

I still hate Christian's collection. HATE.

...but I agree with you 100% on Chris'. It was pretty awful. And I don't understand, because he's demonstrated more than once that he can do exquisite eveningwear.

Anonymous said...

LOVE LOVE LOVE Christian's three looks. He never disappoints.

However, did not like Chris' looks. Still a devoted fan.

Annie said...

Thank you! I loved Christian's looks - his mix of prints is so fun, and the outfits (minus the top on dress 2) are things that everyone can really wear and look stylish.

And I also agree on Chris' dresses - boring, old, and somehow bulky.

Anonymous said...

I'm totally with ya.

I really like what Christian does with color and print, but he loses me on some of the details. There's too much puff around the neck in all three looks... so the retro-Elizabethan collar that he (and Marion, and several others have going on) is just not doing it for me. And then look #2 is just one big puff. I like Christian much better when he mitigates the puff w/ skinniness elsewhere.

Re: Look #3, I love the use of color and the prints contrast and complement really well, but I would have, um... re-oriented the print on the leggings. The wide river of flower/paisley looks like Georgia O'Keefe on an acid trip after a meeting of the editorial board of of "Our Bodies, Our Selves." Send the big print down the side, or something!

Chris's first two looks would have been appropriate for Prince's entourage for the Grammies in the "Diamonds and Pearls" era. And he REALLY needs some help with fabric selection. The velvet is WAY too heavy. I think I'd really like #3 if done with a fabric w/ more draping potential. (I'd like it if Rami did it.)

Interesting...I loved this look by Christian, much more than what's on his site right now... (just google his name).

Anonymous said...

Loved Christian's collection--what he does with those prints, particularly in the first and third looks, is just too cool, and his silhouettes are so interesting. I also liked most of Kit's collection.

Sewing Siren said...

I agree with you about Chris' colleciton. Nothng new. Not a huge effort on Chris' part.
I like Christian's much better than his finale collection, which I believe is costume. It looks like Christian has moved on to the 90's for inspriation. I think this collection is cute and wearable. I don't care for the vertical patterned leggings in the third look. He should have taken more care in the pattern placement. I know a few posters were saying that it didn't look like he put any effort into it. I disagree with that, I think he is always aiming for the win.

Anonymous said...

Christian's third look reminds me of a science experiment - you know, where you grow something in the gel on a petrie dish. I'd hate to think what ailment the model has - could be a nasty case of the cooties! :)

Sharon T said...

Actually, I started liking Christian's the more and more that I looked at it. My first initial impression was "well good that he used color but auuughhh my eyes!" but then I thought, well, #3 ... that top is actually kinda neat. I could actually wear that, maybe with a camisole in that blue he's using in the bodysuit and a pencil skirt or something. And then I thought, well, actually, the more I look at it, while I would never wear it, that bodysuit goes with it in a weird sort of way. Gah. Do I actually LIKE this? Like you, the only one I couldn't get behind was look #2, although I liked the colors, just not the cut of that top. It looked like she put on a gift box. But I liked the first look, even though, once again, I would never wear it.

Unknown said...

I agree with Apollo's comment-- Christian's look does look like a Monet or other impressionist painting. I can see the appeal of The Princess' collection more, because putting prints together well is tricky. I think Uli was the other one who was known best for her use of prints and being able to put them together well. I think even if Christian had not used these colorful prints and used his usual subdued colors, he would've still had a hit with these. I still love Sissybear though, and I agree, these are not his best work.

Chris March is still my favorite contestant this season, but let's just say that I didn't vote for his 3 piece collection. I voted for Elisa's!

Yeeup. Chris' collection looked like something he tossed together from whatever was around the shop after having used up all his inspiration elsewhere. I know he's been told to tone down the drag elements... but geez! Give us a little teensy bit of drama!

Christian's... the last look with the pants works as an illustration in a retro-Pierrot-pastiche-60s way but would probably do horrible things to the thighs of the woman wearing it.

Lilithcat said...

Hated Christian's. The top in #1 was cute (but lose the leggings, please!), and it was nice that he didn't use puffy sleeves on the first two looks (though he did on the third). #2 - well, that top makes her look huge! But what really killed these for me was that he does not know how to use prints! Those leggings in #3 make the model look like she has some bizarre crotch infection.

Chris - #1 is a look that I have never liked, from any designer. I loved #2. #3 - I just don't know. I cannot, either in the videos or the still photos, see this well enough to judge. (Same problem with Kit's black dress.) This has been an irritant throughout the season. Can't the PR people use better lighting?

Anonymous said...

I am in LOVE with Christian's collection. T&L, you're both right on the money because while i was reading your commentary i was thinking the EXACT same thing.
The prints are so fresh and bold, i love love LOVE the last look, the leggings are fabulous and give the illusion of very fitted jeans. Christian was very ambitious mixing such bold prints together, but he really made it work! Chris- I don't have much to say about him.

Anonymous said...

o btw, i absolutely HATE the shoes in the first look. they're heinous

but he did a fabulous job

GothamTomato said...

While I agree that it was great to see Christian get away from black (& other non-colors), I reeeally disagree on these 3 pieces. The first two don't look like an abstract painting; they look like wallpaper. And the way the pattern runs on the third just makes the poor model look like she needs an ointment.

With Chris, when you look at his work as a whole, it is so all over the place, I don't even know what to think. And that first dress not only looks like lingerie, it looks like cheap lingerie.

Both Chris & Christian are definitly among the top 4 of the season, but I think these looks misfire.

Everytime I see Christian, I think he belongs on the Disney Channel singing with his other Jonas Brothers. His 1st look would have been a lovely dress all by itself. His second look is something Joan Collins would wear midway through a Dynasty episode say a Tuesday or Wednesday board meeting taking over Carrington oil while eating shrimp cocktail. His 3rd has the top inspired by Balenciaga. If you see the ads modeled by Jennifer Connelly, they are almost identical in cut. Then the bottom of it shows us PAISLEY CAMELTOE. EWWW!

Chris March is good but inconsistent. No other fashion venue would have given him so many chances. You are adorable Chris and you can do better!!

Nothing derivative here.

Can't agree with that. I've seen all this, from the '60s onward. And these designs are way to intellectual for my taste.

Christian's collection looks very editorial. I could see it as kanani said a sort of "mad hatter" inspired photoshoot for Vogue. Or possibly a 60's Twiggy type thing for the 1st and 3rd looks. But there's no way someone could wear those skin tight blue pants in the real world without ripping them the second they sat down. The first dress is okay if you ditch the paisely leggings, although it might lose some of it's charm without them. Poor Chris dropped the ball on this one.

Oh thank heavens, I have company! It was getting kinda lonely out here in Minority Opinion Land. Can I get you a beverage? Hors d'oeurve?

I share your thoughts on Christian's collection. I dug everything he did except the wonky proportions on look 2. I loved the prints. It almost looks like he replayed the last challenge from PR but took his inspiration from the MoMA instead of the Met. His collection was the most fun and youthful, which is befitting the youngest designer, no? Did you notice the ever so slightly asymetrical hemline on look 1? I think that's a Christian signature. I remember that detail from the Sew Us What You Got skirt, and from one of the pieces on his website.

And Chris, well, I think PR stripped him of his joie de vivre. He needs to tap back into his outrageousness and stop editing so much, because he's edited the creativity right out of his work. And since it can never be said enough...short dress+long lace overlay=bad idea.

Anonymous said...

It looks like my cat threw up all over Christian's models. Editorial, yes, but still FUG. His clothes are not meant to be worn by real human beings.

But you're totally right about Chris.

I partially agree with TLo: I LOVE Christian's last look even though I'd never, in a million years, wear it (maybe if I was stick thin and 7 feet tall). Loathed Chris' 3 looks (3rd one not so bad) though I adore the fella.

Yeah, I voted for Elisa but Marion was a close second.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, but Christian's stuff is exactly what Uli meant when she told Jefferey that it was harder than it looks to work with prints. It just looks awful, and calling it abstract art is a cop-out on the fact that it looks...awful. The silhouettes are weird and unwearable, too.

Chris's was also disappointing. Though I do like the last look, I agree the collection was incohesive and blah as a whole.

Anonymous said...

Both of these suck. Christian's seems like a joke. Perhaps his feedback on the finale was "you should have used more colors/print!" and he lost for that reason, so this is some sort of message.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one who did like Christian's collection but didn't like Chris' collection. I was just too afraid to say anything earlier. Christian's first look really struck me at how attractive those two prints looked together. Something totally surprising and fresh!

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
for christian...
there are still THOSE SLEEVES!!!

Hallo?? you mean he REALLY GETS AWAY FROM IT?

BLAH BLAH

Anonymous said...

I love it!!! I thought Christian's designs were Fab-O!

That being said I am whole heartedly a Christian fan. I was a little worried about the printed leggings but I think he pulled it off very well. Very bold statements from this kid.

Anonymous said...

If I had to choose between the two, Christian would win. Thank goodness I have more choices!

Leggings are fashion forward? Ugh. Take me backward.

The tops in 1 and 3 are inspired. The dress is just too puffy.

Chris? zzzzzzzzz

What was Christian trying to say by showcasing #3's tootie area like that?! Was it supposed to be a celebration of the woohoo or an interpretation of a nightmare he might have once had?

Rainwood said...

TLo, I don't hate you but I also think you're only half right. Christian's poufy ruffly, tight look has always been a little too precious but the prints take everything I don't like about it and dial it up to ten. Ruffly collars - 1 & 2, poufy sleeves 3, tight pants/leggings 1 & 3. Add in the busyness of those prints and the look at my crotch placement in the third look and you've got couture tranny wear. Less is more, PPS. Really.

I mostly agree on Chris's. His mini-collection looks like outtakes from his real one. The third is too tight but might have some possibilities if we could see the detail better.

Neither mini-collection is even close to being a winner.

Chris' work was not my favorite, although I liked one and two,and I had never seen one before, but hell, its been a loooong time since I picked up a Vogue or Elle.

Christian's however looked like the print fabric rack threw up on the model.

Also, I think that while Christian's stuff is goregous and wearable art, I think he has no concept of how a woman's body looks.

Do his clothes look great. Hell yeah, with the exception of the wrestling look, do they make the person wearing them look great? Hell no.

This is why I think Jillian will win. Her girls look great in the clothes.

Where is Sweet Pea's collection?

So funny. When I read the first part, I was absolutely worried you hated Christian's and loved Chris's, and that I actually would have to hate you.

Christian's was absolutely on trend. If any of his looks were on the rack at Sak's, they'd be gone in five minutes. It's definitely a sign of a good designer when he can adjust his own style to the current trends.

And yes, ironic florals are making a comeback.

I was searching for the words to write about the python tootie thing going on but found them in your post. YES!

I like the top on Christian's first look but that's it. I'd wear it with plain leggings not the print.Too much going on, I think. But I'm just a West Virginia girl...what the heck do I know about high fashion.
lol!!

And my Sissybear....blech! The 2nd & 3rd were better the first was awful.
I still love him though!!!

Kit's collection was more my style..but I'll wait till you get to her.

Hells to the friggin' yeah! Just saw TLo's video on Bravotv.com - you guys are such cutie patooties. BTW - I love Christian. You are spot on with your assessment.

I completely agree with your comments. And bravo for saying them, despite the blind affection for everything Chris March by so many of your readers. You guys are awesome.

I applaud Christian's move into the wonderful world of color and the prints he chose are beautiful. Still, though, his pattern placement for #3, IMHO, is so tootieful as to be distracting. Considering the print, I can't help but wonder what one would see if the model for #1 lifted her top and exposed the rest of her leggings.

Urp. The printed leggings, just like the patterned tights I'm starting to see again, make it look like one has a skin disorder. And I really, really, really do not want to see that head-sticking-out-of-a-ruffle shirt ever again. leggings, just, bleh. As the Fug Girls say, "Look into pants."

Chris', in still photos, is boring. In motion on the runway? It made me ANGRY. Those women couldn't move. Cruel and stupid. But then, I won't wear heels, so maybe I'm not of the suffer-for-fashion aesthetic. That last model worked her hip sway, though. Looked like Joan from Mad Men.

Anonymous said...

I couldn't agree more. Chris' #2 dress was great on the bottom, but that top was so weird.

Christian's was over the top like you would see in a show, but the pieces were wearable. Except for dress #2 which made her look like a hunchback. But he could fix that one. The fabric was cool and so was the idea.

Anonymous said...

At first I didn't like Christian's, but the more I look at it, the more I love it. It's really artistic, it's just not something that anyone will just go out and wear. And I hate Chris's, it's boring and pretty ugly.

Anonymous said...

Let's see. If I were a tall, exceptionally thin, straight girl, I'd go for Christian's collection over Chris's. Ain't fashion fun?

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with you guys on this one. I actually thought Christian's collection was the best (the other contestant will really hate him if he wins EVERYTHING this season). Chris, Ricky and Steven's collections were the weakest in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

Totally unrelated- did you see Heidi Klum's Oscar Dress? I smell worst dressed list. I would love to get Nina Garcia's opinion.

Anonymous said...

I started trying to explain how I felt about Christian's collection, but it got a bit overwhelming. So, one long press of 'backspace' later-

Christian- no.
Chris- no.

Which is a shame.

Mom said...

These two mini-collections are, for me, a classic example of how different outfits look in still photos and on video when they're moving.

I didn't like Christian's on video. At all. It seemed like warmed-up leftovers of fabric scraps and did not appeal. In still photos, though, I can see some merit in Looks #1 and 3. But I still wouldn't buy either. Look #2 just plain and simply sucked.

I lurrrrved Chris's Look #1 on video. I don't care if it's been done before, I lurrrrved it and would buy it. And it still looks good in a still photo. Look #2 has merit on video and cries out for a lighter fabric on top in a still photo. Look #3, well, is just too damn heavy whether moving or still.

NEVER hate you even when my eyes roll in disagreement...who could hate two brilliantly clever guys who can make me laugh until I weep? Must say that I wasn't fond of Christian's online collection on the BRAVO site but after looking at your stills I am reconsidering it. Second look is just plain scary but the prints are fun and I can envision the pieces mixed in an existing wardrobe in the real world. Christian is a truly gifted designer and Tim and the judges recognize it. When given a challenge he GETS IT immediately and goes to work; his vision is clear and he rarely second guesses himself. Such is brilliance and the cockiness, smugness and occasional flashes of superiority are just part of the deal. He's going to win.

yawningdog said...

Can't hate you boys, I have to agree entirely.

Joanie said...

Just because leggings are the current trend doesn't make them good. I stand by my statement that they should only be worn for that big musical rehearsal.

Christian picked some lovely prints to use and used them in all the wrong ways. Especially the leggings on #3. That's the vag version of a titscrepancy. A crotchscrepancy? Vagscrepancy? Whatever...it's still not a good thing.

Chris, on the other hand, went for a more basic aesthetic, for which I'm very happy. The fabric on top of look #2 was a little too bulky for my liking, but overall, there was more cohesion and style to his mini collection.

Of course, one would do well to remember I'm more fashion backward than the majority of civilization, so what do I know?

Anonymous said...

"I lurrrrved Chris's Look #1 on video. I don't care if it's been done before, I lurrrrved it and would buy it. "

The crime is not that it's been done before. It's that it should NEVER EVER be done AGAIN.

Yes - Heidi's Oscar dress had a collar that looks like it was inspired by, or made by, Chris march. I actually liked the dress on her, the color was vivid, and she looked great! Except for that big fake bun she had on the back of her head!

Chris's is wrong and Christian's is just not attractive.

Haven't read the rest of the comments, don't have much of an opinion on either collection, would just like to know why Chris is dressed like Fred Flintstone.

Anonymous said...

Well, I've really been questioning your tastes for the past few posts (okay, nearly the entire season) but this just renewed my faith. Everything you said was exactly what I was thinking... Christians was by far the most innovative collection in my opinion, and it deserved all the praise you gave it. Along with that, I hated Chris's looks. Why is he in the top four, again? Wasn't he SENT HOME?!

Anonymous said...

I thought Christian's collection was gorgeous. Fresh, creative and very much in sync with the trends.

Anonymous said...

DEAD-ON! CHRISTIAN'S COLLECTION IS THE BEST!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised that so few people are picking up on how terrible Christian's leggings would look on someone without stick-thin legs. The only reason leggings "work" right now (and I use the term loosely) is because (a) they are worn under dresses and tunics, NOT blouses that stop at the waist, like in look #3, and (b) they tend to be BLACK, which disguises lumps and jiggles much better than crazy patterns.

This reminds me of his denim look--super cool, but so unattainable for most of us.

I'm glad you can see that Christian's dress is hideous. But the first and third outfits...they would be worn when? And by whom? (Other than actresses in a 50's movie?)

The boy can sew, but he's still a boy. No one has told our boy yet that precociousness is a charming trait among the pre-pubescent. After that, it becomes something else.

I see that many people seem to have gone on a bender and drank way too much of Christian's kool-aid.

Are you kidding me? Those prints look more like fractal patterns than anything that should be put on a body. And the leggings in and of themselves? Well, I must say that he found a new way to make these models look even skinnier. With the puffy sleeves and whacky hats, they look more like characters out of an all drag version of Oliver (with the hit song "Who Will Buy This Crappy Dress?")

Chris's collection was alright, if bland. The last dress though had a beautiful silhouette. The color did make it hard to see the details of the dress, but from I could see it just looked like a wonderful red carpet awards dress.

Unknown said...

Though I can't say I haven't seen those shapes and printed leggings before, Christian's pieces are not bad. I would have liked to see more of that in his almost completely black final collection.

This mini-collection gave me a whole new respect for Christian. While I've believed all along that he's talented, I was always a little bothered by the heavy McQueen/Westwood influences and felt his voice was a bit too much of an echo of theirs--but THIS! Whole other side, very fresh, very original, and yet, yes, as you pointed out, still VERY PPS!

Suzanne said...

I didn't love either one. Chrises models couldn't walk in their gowns and call me crazy but I kind of think thats important. Christians suff looked fussy and overdone to me.

I actually like Christian's second dress more than the third outfit. The only reason she looks like a hunchback is because she's bent over like a hunchback. I think the dress would look great in person.

Aaron Frey said...

I hated Chris' collection. I agree with T Lo that it looks old and matronly. Christian's was ok. The second design looks like a printed potato sack. The other two are interesting, but I like the third the best, puffy sleeves and all.

Without reading all the other comments, I think Christian's third look is horrible. It highlights the model's gooch, and that never is a good thing.

Two words: Crotch Flora.

Thankfully no fauna, but as much as I like the fact that Christian used color, "floral crotch" is never a phrase I want to use again.

I'm in total agreement on both Chris and Christian's collections, with the exception that I would have used more florid adjectives to describe Christian's third outfit. I thought it was absolutely smashing.

Mad props to Christian!!

Anonymous said...

guh. I 100% disagree with you on Christian. Not flattering. Not really that colorful (the first one is dowdy, imho, the second one looks like the print on one of my grandma's old couches and the third one looks like an alligator somehow tragically mated with a zebra and was butchered in the name of fashion. Barf) and not flattering at all.
However, I am in total agreement with you on Chris. Boring and heavy.

Anonymous said...

Christian: It looks like print godzilla vomitted all over his clothes. Absolutely hate them all.

Chris: Dull. 'nuff said.

I voted for Elisa, by the way.

"Funny, Prada just did a collection that looks almost EXACTLY like Chris'. Heavy black lace with undergarments showing through. Interesting.... Did you guys like the Prada?"

The only similar element is the lace. Chris's look is a short dress masquerading as a long dress. Prada was more like a fusion of the prim and proper with the erotic.

Nillandre said...

I love Christian's collection for this extra challenge, just like you.
I would definitely wear the first and third look (indeed, the second look, that dress, seems a little difficult to pull off regarding the volume structure).
