The Fashion Event of the Century: Laura Bennett on QVC

Thursday, February 21, 2008 by

Fire up those credit cards, kittens!

It's confirmed: Laura's designs will go on sale on QVC on February 25th, from 10 p.m. - midnight on a show called "Spring Fashion Designer Gallery." She'll be selling a mini collection of five items: a coat, a jacket, pants, a wrap, and a blouse. Sizes range from XS to 3X. The much-asked-about black dress along with other fabulous items will be sold in April.

We'll keep you updated and we'll add pictures as soon as we have them.

What was that whole Victoria thing about? There was something going on, but it looks like we won't be privied to it. She looked like she hated being there and hated everyone in the room. What a Biatch!

I'm in desperate need of a nice coat. Can't wait!

Laura, hope everything sells out in milliseconds! *mwah*

The QVC media rep I spoke to last week said 6 p.m. on the 25th -- wonder if they changed it?

I feel uncooler than usual saying this to Ms. Laura Bennett but I will anyway. You GO girl!

Thanks for keeping us updated, TLo! QVC has always scared me, but I will brave it to try and get some Laura Bennett designs!

I've never really watched QVC before, I may have to tune in for this. Thanks for the heads up.

QVC has been pretty supportive of the Runway designers haven't they?
I don't get that channel, but I'll check it out on line. I'm really looking forward to "The Dress", but I guess I will have to wait until April or a contest .

Also a QVC virgin here, so if anyone who has already been deflowered, as it were, has any helpful hints about the QVC purchasing process, I would be ever so grateful to read them.

Milla will like to hear this (hi Milla!). There was a lot of conversation about size issues and perceptions on another thread.

I'm glad to see her doing clothing for the "X" sizes. My belief is that anyone of any size can look good. And having someone design clothes that fit and flatter is very affirming for the wearers sense of self.

Kanani said...

P.S. Joan...kittycat...let's go shopping. No reason to wait. Really! Gimme a cart with a bunch of accessories and we'll getcha lookin' great.

I am putting this on my calendar right now!!! Yeah!

I'm looking forward to the dress come April!

Hooray! I will be tuning in to QVC for the first time ever. Always used to bypass all the shopping channels.

sidebar - Augusten Burrough's first novel, Sellevision, about a home shopping network? Not as good as his amazing memoirs 'Running with Scissors', 'Dry', 'Possible Side Effects', and 'Magical Thinking'. But still an amusing read. Anyone?

Kanani said...

Bill,
I've never watched QVC either. I guess Laura's will be our maiden voyage!

I enjoy Augusten a lot. His brother, John is also talented and writes a bit about Augusten in his book. I reviewed it last fall.

If not being able to afford $400 dresses or coats and looking for an alternative to be stylish and have something made by the fabulous Laura Bennett is trashy, than I guess you're both right. I am trashy and cannot wait to get trashier.

We - the trashy ones - appreciate the fact that Laura is designing something for us and so I thank her.

I'm sure she'll have her $3500 coat line for the rest of you.

?????????????? (stream of conciousness anyone?)

Bill, I thought "Running With Scissors" was terribly over-hyped. A singularly seamy, nasty, self-indulgent little tale of Pedophilia. I thought it was wildly nacissistic with characters of very little redeeming value. I am very firmly NOT a prude (as a gay man, how could I be) but every time the author turned to yet another graphic depiction of sex with his step brother, sex with his therapist, sex with his 30 year old "boyfriend," all I kept thinking was "HE'S A 13 YEAR OLD BOY!!!" It left a very bad taste in my mouth. I was pleased when the (again much over-hyped) film tanked.

I also think he has some balls taking the title "Magical Thinking" after the release of Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking."

Sidebar - speaking of balls, I'm just crazy about Croquet!!! Anyone?

Anonymous said...

Bill,

we actually discussed Sellevision in our gay book club. I think it is adorable fluff, fit for the beach, a plane or so. With the exception of 'Running' I prefer his other books. I've never watched a home-shopping channel and the book didn't make it likelier. But I'm not in the market for Diamonelle jewlery or little black dresses anyway.

I wouldn't say QVC is trashy, but rather foreign to most of us. (Lord knows I can't afford a $3500 anything!) From my POV, why do I have to wait until they show Laura on TV to buy her clothes from the website? Why can't they just put her stuff up for sale on the website? Hence, my confusion and resultant fear of QVC. :)

I have never shopped QVC. It always struck me as a place for insomniacs and depressives who think a diamond pave ring will make their problems go away.

Mom`s addicted to QVC and Project Runway, so this is the best of both worlds for her! And yes, I called her up and told her about Laura being on QVC. (Mom doesn`t have the internet.)

Another QVC phobic reporting in, not sure why I think it's tacky since I've never watched it, but I would follow LaBennett to the ends of the earth. Unfortunately I'll be in Washington DC next week so unless the hotel room offers QVC on their cable selection I'm out of luck. What is the website of which others speak? Can Laura's fashions be purchased elsewhere?

On the book side thread, I am not a huge Burroughs fan although he's good for a giggle, but Joan Didion's "Year of Magical Thinking" made me crazy. I found it repetitive and dull. This may be the meanest thing I've ever typed but I didn't feel any empathy for her losses. Boo hiss, I'm a horrible person. Sorry!

Kanani said...

Sorry, off topic --but I find the people here on this blog to be wonderfully read, cultured and fun to blog with.

Joan Didion's "Year of Magical Thinking" made me crazy. I found it repetitive and dull.

TYOMT was the book where the person and writer came together. She finally looked at the world and questioned her perspective.

I've long admired her confidence to create some of sharp American prose and her observations about the destruction of the West have always been top notch. However, for all her skills as a stylist, there was a distance between her and the protagonist (in fiction) or topic (in non fiction), which was always unsympathetic.

The tragedy which befell her, (and later the loss of her daughter) had a very humanizing impact. No, she isn't someone to be pitied. As repetitive as the book was, I did find it amazing to watch her grow/

I find Borroughs a skilled writer of the self-narrative. However, his brother John's book is a much easier read, and I think in the long run, "Look Me In The Eye" will have a lot of social impact.

Apologies to all.
And now on with Laura Bennett!

I love the QVC!!!
I go crazy every year at the designer for charity shoe sale.
And I love that they make EVERYTHING in plus sizes! That is DEMOCRACY. I don't want validation I want equality. My cash is as good as a skinny chick's at least on QVC.
I have my checkbook ready and my QVC Card prepped.
I buy all of my Kenneth Jay Lane jewelry from them.
Same pieces as Saks and Kitson except like 40/50% less...
Thank you babies..
Love ya,
Milla

QVC is infamous for creating sellout frenzy on debut designers.

Going on past history, the item numbers won't be available on qvc.com until the same time that Laura hits the airwaves. Be quick with your mouse and credit card numbers!

Good luck with your shopping.

Best wishes to Laura.
Hope she enjoys the experience. =')

Sage, darling, poopsie, pal o'mine...tell me more because I've been all over that qvc.com site and could not find any of these items. And I really, really, really would like to get the LBD, but I thought TLo said it wouldn't be available until an April appearance by LB. Is it going to be included in this Feb. 25 appearance if they've assigned it a product number?

Mom said...

And recommendations on sizing are thoroughly welcome!

yawningdog said...

Damn! I promised myself if I stayed skinny, I'd treat myself to one of her dresses come February. Now, I find myself almost 5 months pregnant and as big as a house already. I'd get the dress anyway, if I had any idea what size I would be this time next year.

Maybe I should get get a size 6 and an 18 and sell which ever doesn't fit on ebay.

Sage said...

agnes ~ that's all that customer service is giving out. No descrip, no pics online, no size charts.
=( *sorry*

QVC sizing is all over the map. Some lines run small, some run huge.

Mom said...

Thanks, sage!

So if anybody is in a position to let Laura Bennett know that some of us are very keen to know sizing info, that would be spiffy!

I 've got news for you kittens.

Selling on QVC is not such a big deal. What you should know is this:
1) you need to make up and have ready to sell immdiately, a sizeable inventory.
2) QVC does not select designers on merit alone, but rather on how you are financed. Thanks Daddy Warbucks.

3) If the majors ain't buying it, they have a good reason.

4) Many real designers shudder at the thought of selling in QVC Land, and will always look down upon those that do.

5) Here today, gone forever.

QVC is nothing to fear. It is tons better than watching any Bravo "real" housewives.

Ms Sangrail said...

I always had the impression that QVC was a great venue for designers to reach a *much* larger client base. I think that it's great for Laura and I hope she has success with it.

Mom said...

I appreciate the insider info, qvc insider, but the fact is -- I don't care if other designers shudder and if Daddy Warbucks is doing the financing. The LBD is perfect for something I need to attend at the end of May (short-sleeve version) and I. must. have. it (either size 4 or 6) (I'm an ectomorph. So shoot me). And certain Philadelphia-based bloggers have access to certain Manhattan-based designers, so I just want to know HOW EXACTLY I can score myself one. Thankyouverymuch.

Anonymous said...

I think the association of QVC with "trashy" and as a place to gaudy costume jewelry and Ronco food prep machines comes from its early days when it was very much a venue for selling things that appeared to have been hijacked somewhere between Jersey City and Hoboken.

My understanding is there are a lot more high end (or at least aspirationally luxe or high quality) products on it now. LB being a case in point.

Though you may love QVC and rankle at the association, like it or not trashy/low class is most definitely still an entrenched part of the QVC brand in the eyes of many people. Likewise with blogs and any number of things. I'd wager most people wouldn't say "QVC" when asked their first idea for an outlet for Laura Bennett's society maven type clothes. Which makes it an interesting and possibly brilliant choice.

Anonymous said...

Can we get a clarification on the time? Also, I don't get QVC. Can I just buy directly or watch online?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous, go to QVC.com and you should be able to watch online if you have a broadband collection. You can also order there. When the items are available, you can search on the item numbers. You may not be able to access them until 02/25.

I believe the first designer 'show' is Midnight to 2 AM EST. There may be more shows later in the day.

I found this on the QVC site.

I thinks you can't really judge from the tiny pictures that QVC is providing, but wait until you see them modeled. I think the blouse is really cute and I also like the khaki corset jacket. But I think they will look much better on than they do now on the manequins
