Well, we're out of dresses to make fun of so how about a little mid-season report card?
Darlings, we think we have our finger on the pulse of PR fandom, and we think it's safe to say that one cry has rung out loud and clear over and over. "This season sucks."
We disagree.
Now, that doesn't mean we don't have problems with the current season and (opinionated bitches that we are) we'll happily outline them for you, but for the most part, Project Runway is what it's always been: a reality television show nominally based on a fashion design competition.
Here's the thing: is this season a little boring compared to previous ones? A little. But we think this charge is somewhat overblown. Season 3 saw the show reach new heights of popularity and you couldn't swing a knockoff LV from Canal Street without hitting a magazine cover starring Heidi or Tim. Then there was the excruciatingly long wait between seasons. PR fans waited so long for season 4 to start that we suspect that nothing was ever going to live up to their expectations. Couple that with Sir Tim's rather unwise over-the-top exclamation pre-season that this was the most talented group of designers in the history of the world and you have a recipe for disappointment.
The show for the most part is as it ever was: lock a bunch of designers in Parson's basement, feed them bread and water, make them jump through flaming hoops performing tricks that have little to do with the real world of fashion, have Tim look concerned and then have the three judges sit with a representative from the real world of fashion and complain that the results look "rushed." That's the formula and that's what it's always been.
Now, one could argue that perhaps it's time to switch up the formula a bit and we have to say, part of us likes the idea. Maybe the franchise needs a slight rethink before the inevitable Season 5 rolls around. On the other hand, these sorts of things don't tend to work out well. More often than not, producing a successful TV show is a crap shoot and the producers themselves don't always know why a show becomes a hit. Tweaking an already successful format could lead to disastrous results. As we said, part of us likes the idea but we have to conclude that it's not worth the chance that it could ruin the show.
Why are so many online commenters proclaiming it the worst season ever? It's not the format. And despite what some people have said, it's not the challenges. The challenges this season have been pretty much in line with previous seasons: the producers put roadblocks in the way of the designers, whether they be material constraints or model constraints or time constraints, in order to heighten the tension and see who can produce something fabulous under such circumstances. Yeah, there are probably too many team challenges and we still say that designing something to be worn on the Today Show represented a low fabulosity point for the show. We'd rail against the over-the-top product placement of the Hershey's challenge but in that instance, the results were fun so we can't complain that much.
So if it's not the format and it's not the challenges, what is it? Well, we hate to say it but it's the participants. There were rumors last year that the producers were having trouble finding worthy contestants. To their credit, they found a talented group of designers. Problem is, there's a serious personality deficit going on here. We're sure they're all loaded with personality in person, but they're all FAR too aware of how they want to come across on camera and since most of them have fairly well established careers already, no one's going to make an ass out of themselves and the show is suffering because of it.
Fans always say "I don't watch the show for drama" and we say in response "Honey? Bullshit." We always used to say if it was an hour of professionals calmly stitching, the show would be boring. Guess what? A lot of S4 has been about professionals calmly stitching. Where are the hungry over-the-top personalities of yesteryear? The Kaynes and Santinos and Lauras and Jays and Ulis and Jeffreys and Andraes and even the Vincents and Angelas and Wendys? There's a reason Christian's become the breakout star of the season: he's the only one willing to be himself one hundred percent on camera. The producers tried like crazy to make Elisa into the wacky one, but in the end she was just a quirky, gentle artist unsuitable for reality TV. Jack showed promise but unfortunately he had to leave and Chris' aufing really sobered him up. He's been quiet and businesslike since his return. We suspect the producers thought they had a goldmine in the tattoo'd biker chick persona of Sweet P only to have her wind up actually being sweet and more than a little befuddled by the whole thing. It was fun watching Ricky cry the first 30 times but it's gotten old and Rami, VictorYA, Jillian, Kevin, Steven, Marion and Kit just didn't want to put themselves out there too much.
If we had to offer the producers one bit of advice, it's this: we, the fans of PR, don't want to see mature, established professionals concerned with their self-image. We want to see raw, crazy talent unafraid to take chances, have fights and get drunk. Not only is it more entertaining, they tend to produce more interesting garments too.

After reading the comments and considering this subject more deeply, I've discovered another gem that's missing this season.
TIM TIM TIM.
I mean there.s no Danial franco dismissals, No crying housewives blubbering to him, which his face is priceless in those moments.
No putting him on Ice skates, no Dapper Dan safety gear, No impressions, no " where's Andrae.
ETC.
What, he's a bigwig now so they can't embarass him anymore?
BOO
More TIM discomfort is needed STAT!!!
This season, even though its arguably the most boring Project Runway season, is still HEAPS better than the nonsense that is Project Catwalk.
My favorite parts of the previous three seasons was the interaction between the designers. There was much more gossip/partying/bitching between each other - Nick vs. Santino, Nick vs. Zulema, Angela vs. Vincent, Wendy vs. Kara, etc. Now all we have is the occasional chat in the morning and group challenges. Otherwise there's nothing to really let their personality out. Confessionals and runway dialogue is fake and doesn't make for an interesting show.
Possible changes to future seasons? How about a PR "all stars?" It's probably been suggested before but not by me. Imagine designers who didn't get to go to fashion week trying again...you could have Austin, Andre, Nick, Kayne, Rob, Malan, etc. interact with each other...how fabulous would that be? While we're playing fantasy PR, let's give Daniel Franco another chance. Even better...give past finalists the chance to be the guest judges! I'd love to see Wendy come back and criticize other people's work...just to see what the other designers had to say back to her.
It's their interview filter people who make it stink! They don't really interview! They cut Annie Modesitt, & while she's not sewing for a living, she's a published knit & crochet designer & according to some who've met her, she's "a little crazy." :)
GT:
I couldn't answer your questions about Jeffrey, in fact, couldn't even think of the questions you pose.
Sebelia was an asshole --so much so that I quit watching that season. It's one way that I have to not get so emotionally invested in reality TV. I turn it off. I have projects and other interests. I understand that even for the contestants, this is a show, not a judgement for their entire life or career.
I honestly don't watch for the drama--but I *do* watch for interesting competition. So far, this season has been a big yawn for me.
I think the designers' greetings to the judges tonight says a lot about how the designers feel about them. Michael got a unified monotone hello, Nina got an almost whispered hi.
I would love to see Heidi's outfit actually correspond to the week's challenge for a change. What was up with all the sparkle in contrast to the denim?
Leave it to the judges to recognize a sudden rally only when the designer has been out to lunch for eight solid weeks. Ricky did good work this week, but other designers have done better work on a week-by-week basis, and none of them were recognized for their personal bests.
Still, I'm delighted to see Victorya sent home. This is the first aufing in almost two months that didn't upset me.
It's sort of like figure skating - the more technical tricks they try to stuff in, the less space there is for artistry (it's the gayest analogy I could come up with).
I think aside from the personalities and camaraderie of our favourite designers that endeared them to us is that we got to watch them grow and develop, especially the ones that didn't really develop a signature "look." For example, Rami can drape and make excuses about it suiting his clientele but he's obviously already put himself in that box and it makes him really boring.
We got to watch them mature and tackle situations that were for the most part, completely foreign to them. I feel very strongly that way about Laura/Chris (older, self-taught, not much experience in the traditional/mainstream industry) and Christian (young kid w/ lots of passion). Even with Angela, whom many do not like, was able to put out something beautiful when "channeled" correctly and I think that sort of gives me a vicarious joy. Whether they hit or miss, we still love them because they're our babies.
Plus it's no fun when you just have a prodigy, particularly a young prodigy, always winning b/c there's no sense of achievement through struggle.
Ninjarina
I agree with the get new judges idea. At least one new judge. I would keep Nina. But I would replace Michael Kors. Who cares what he thinks? He never says anything particularly insightful and he's not funny. Hate to say it, but they need a Simon Cowell type.
I don't know....I THINK I'm losing the "must see" mentality because last season's ugliness (Jeffrey in the Mom challenge comes immediately to mind) started a downhill trend for me, and this season hasn't the energy so far to turn that around. So I'm still watching, but certainly not as involved. With the exception of the AG looks, there have been no "wow" creations for me this season.
But I'm still watching, and still enjoy the show. And I LOVE the show in conjunction with this BLOG. I may only "half-watch" an episode, but I'm always engrossed here at Project Rungay! As many other posters have noted, the BLOG keeps me comin' back. (TLO: Bravo NEEDS you.)

Totally agree, kittens!
I am in absolute LOVE with Christian. Personally, I like the balance between cocky ass bitches (Christian), and sweet-as-pie jokesters (Chris and Sweet Pea) in this season.
I agree that they should look for people with less work experience. And fire those damn judges! God, almost every decision they make SUCKS.
I don't think they've had enough "take this garbage and make it awesome" challeneges this time.
All good points.
I've also noticed that this season (until Levi's) lacked involvement from a major retailer or apparel maker. The challenges have thus been more artificial. It means something for viewers (as well as designers) to know that winning designs will appear on store racks in the real world. And not just SJP's Bitten boutiques.
For S5, I suggest:
-- more involvement from a major retailer or manufacturer
-- freshen the judging with a new judge
-- slight changes in the presentation of the formula
-- less experienced contestants
-- obstacles that are just a bit more believable
Finally, I'd like to see MUCH greater support for past runners-up.
I agree that tinkering with the way an established show works is dangerous, but PR really, really needs cumlative scoring. If you're Rami or Jillian and in the top scorers you could take a BIG risk and not be auf'd for it.
Random musings about the denim episode;
Sissybear should have listened to Tim.
Rami sent out a really nice look and reprised Jeffrey's zipper trims from last season. I was surprised that Tim didn't mention that - in a hurry to get to his 3:00 AM bad decision, perhaps?
Jillian tried too hard and was barely able to finish... again. Listen to Sissybear, girl!
Ricky actually pulled a rabbit out of his hat. Not my taste, but well put together. Now that he's won a challenge he will likely be the next auf'ee
Thank G*d Sweet P listened to Tim. She was at risk for the bottom two had she not chopped that dress. A denim wedding gown? What the F?
What a passive agressive bitch YaYa was. Did she actually think she could shovel that piece of shit down the runway, stand there with a blank look on her face and expect the judges to ooh and aah? Interesting to see the (non) reaction of her fellow designers at Tim's 'clean up your workspace' phrase.
Wave your little hand and whisper so long dearie; I should have said so long so long ago.
Hello Dolly
They started showing personality last night! THANK GOD!!!
I knew they would start showing their true colors eventually. :D
Oh lordy, but these are good comments. I am still rolling about PR Bingo...Insane Crotch! That's a good nickname. How's about this, producers...all of next season's contestants are just about to gradudate design school students. You literally go in with cameras to class and pluck thme out and voila...inexperienced talent! And the crazier the hairstyle and/or clothing, the better!
One big problem is that they still insist on doing team challenges without revamping them. How is a team challenge fun when the leader is entirely aware their head is on the chopping block? Chris/Christian's dress last week was WAY more Chris than Christian. But Chris didn't want to be team leader.
The fix for that is easy. It would be fair, and also then the fans wouldn't be so pissed. They just don't *want* to do it. They don't get it...
"ignatz said: I LOVE the show in conjunction with this BLOG. I may only "half-watch" an episode, but I'm always engrossed here at Project Rungay! As many other posters have noted, the BLOG keeps me comin' back. (TLO: Bravo NEEDS you.)"
I second that emotion.
Had I not stumbled upon this blog, I most likely would have given up on the show.

"I've enjoyed this season very much. I actually like the more even-keeled personalities, but then again I like BBC gardening shows."
LOL ME TOO!!!!!!!! LOL
I agree w/you guys, but another reason S4 stinks: the judging SUCKS this season. There is no rhyme or reason to their decisions. Think about it: VictorYA (and I'm no fan or hers) won twice and got auf'd, while Ricky has been a bottom feeder the entire time and is still there. Kevin and Kit land in the bottom for the first time and got auf'd, and they are both arguably more talented than freakin' Ricky. The judges don't know if they're coming or going, and I think it's time they rethink how they judge—if not who is doing the judging.
I think the perfect example is "Make Me a Supermodel" vs. "America's Next Top Model." I was starting to think that Tyra was getting TOO crazy, and the DRAMA was too over-the-top. But now that Bravo has given us "real models" and "real model challenges"...snooze, I'm bored. Give me Tyra's histrionics any day!
What they need to do is have an all-star season where all the nutjobs from seasons past come back and try to win again. Or - I don't think this has ever been done before but - they could split into two teams and each time the team loses they have to vote someone off. Original, n'est-ce-pas?
Thank god, I thought I was the only one who thought that this is the "WORST SEASON EVER".
I have not been impress by one single one of the challenges. How many times last season did I exclaim "Oh, I wish I could buy that!"???? I have yet to say that about any of the outfits this time around.
Personalities are also lacking...boring boring...Christian is the only one with any life in him! Everyone is almost too nice and not competitive enough....
Here to the hope that next season will be better....
I think they also need a new set of judges...time to say Auf Weidersen to Kors and Garcia!
Most people I know who watch this show thinks it's the Worst. Season. Ever. The designs are boring. The designers are boring. The judges are stupid. Less Tim Gunn on screen.
I cannot believe that weepy queen Ricky is still around. His designs suck. He add ZERO entertainment value. How did he even get on this show. The standards have really dropped.
Now Tim Gunn is calling out the producers for their shady editing. On the most recent Tim's Take, he revealed that the editors manipulated his words to justify their decision to keep Ricky. This is utterly ridiculous.
i watched last night's episode with a few friends who aren't regular watchers & they all complained about the fact that this season has more established designers than past years. personally, that doesn't bug me.
for me, it's the heavy product placements and the lack of fun. this batch of designers just doesn't seem to enjoy each other. nor do they seem to hate each other. they're just blah about it all. reality tv is about extremes. and past seasons have provided both.
don't get me wrong. last season's jeffrey/angela nonsense was unwatchable. and, please no more vincents! but at least there were loveable characters like michael, laura & kayne, who brought the oomph. this season there's chris and.... that's about it. and even he seems dead tired and creatively stifled most of the time.
where's the drinking? the psychos? the singing? the tim-time? hell, i'll take some bickering from the judges!
maybe if they weren't all so serious, or exhausted...? i don't know. i just hope it gets better from here on out.
i just want to add that, despite my criticisms, it's still the best show on tv.
Great post, guys!
The season has gotten a little better. It's still my favorite show.
THIS SEASON BLOWS!!! I HATE IT!!!!!!!
Finally got here to read the comments, and I can't agree more with GothamTomato - if it weren't for Tom & Lorenzo, I'm not sure if I would have made it. I enjoy the show so much more (and laugh out loud) by sitting with you guys on the virtual couch and going over the outfits with you. Frankly, it's the only time I really get to appreciate the fashion that's created, since they still can whiz by so fast on the runway. The screencaptures and the commentary really round out the show for me - so I can't even imagine PR without TLO. Bravo, take heed to our guys!
There ARE some viewers (like me) who DO come just to check out clothes someone created and judge them. I'm sure others need a drama fix but there's always The Donald and his hair if they're not amused with S4.
Look at all the folk who buy fashion magazines to scrutinize garments they can't afford to buy. They care about the clothes, not the personalities.
I say more time, more challenges per show, technical challenges would be interesting, less team rubbish, more critiquing, maybe a challenge where they get to redo something they make after its presented, more unusual inspiration challenges, whatever but focus on the garments....
I think this has been the best season ever. Though it would be fun if Austin Scarlett and Andrae could pop in once in a while for commentary... or as clients to design for!
Did they forget to mention Steven, too?
I agree. Having established professionals on PR is a little like having NBA stars on the Olympic basketball team. It makes sense from a certain, limited perspective, but violates the spirit of the event, which is to showcase amateur talent and give a leg up to people entering a very difficult business.
Posting this late in the game is like talking to the wind, but what the heck.
I think the show would lose some of its "tension" if the designers were judged on an accumulated points basis as someone else has suggested. That makes real sense from a "competition" perspective, but would be pretty bland "reality TV".
