Princess Puffysleeves at NASCAR

Monday, January 28, 2008 by

Christian sums up our feelings on the judging this week:

We couldn't agree more, Princess.

This:

Was pretty fucking amazing. Not without its problems, mind you, but amazing nonetheless.

See, we don't know about the rest of you, but we don't watch Project Runway so we can see clothing that you could pick up at any mall in America.

We watch it so we can see designers make crazy, fabulous, beautiful things under extreme conditions.

And for the bitchery.

Let's get one thing out of the way first. Fabulous as this is, we don't feel Christian was robbed of the win for several reasons. First, this doesn't really say "iconic Levi's 501" to us. Second (and we'll grant you that this isn't quite fair), this would have been a bitch to manufacture at a Levi's price point.

One major criticism we have of Christian's designs is that he rarely seems to take into consideration how they would look on an actual woman, size 0 or not. He's so caught up in his frippery and detailing that he doesn't notice things like he might be giving his 90-lb. model what looks like a beer gut.

Having said that, the jacket is gorgeous in its own way - and beautifully constructed. On the other hand, we've seen this look from Christian plenty of times before: the puffy sleeves, the ruffled bib. Come on, girl. Do something else for a change.

We realize that technically this isn't a sewing competition, but damn, is it impressive that he was able to construct something like that in such a short period of time. Flawless execution.

And the jeans are FABULOUS. Yes, yes, skinny jeans are the bane of the modern woman's existence. We get it. They're still fabulous.

Love that he used sleeve cuffs for the legs and we also love the button detail on the back of the calves. It's hard to find something new in the world of jeans, but damn if our little princess didn't find it.

Yeah, it was obvious that Princess thought she should have won it, but she thinks that every week. He's a pretty amazing designer, we have to say. Unfortunately, he's not shown us that he can do anything outside of a very narrow range. Which is fine; plenty of very successful designers have a narrow focus. It's just that in PR, it doesn't get you the big wins.

He does some amazing work in a short amount of time, yes.

But he's a conceited little jerk with the attitude, voice, and vocabulary of a 14-year-old girl.

I don't find him entertaining in the least. I want him gone.

Those jeans truly are amazing. Love, love, love the cuff detail.

I like Christian. I think he is very insecure - watch the episode in which he had to do the prom dress. At one point, the camera caught him looking like a totally insecure little kid. He puts on a big front, but he seems like a decent human being.

Having said that, I don't think he is as talented as Chris. He has a narrower range, which I think is because of his age and experience. He actually thinks the 80s were hot! I lived through them, and they were NOT hot! But he is better than Rami, who is truly arrogant, thinks he knows better than everyone (when he took on Nina at one judging about his prom dress, I thought to myself, "He will never be forgiven for that one!" and he drapes, drapes, drapes. He is a happy draper. Bleh. It was nice the first time, but the next 5 times it stunk.

Chris all the way for me. If Christian is smart, he will continue to listen to Chris and learn, as he does have great sewing skills, and has shown flashes of brilliance, IMHO. :)

SUS said...

I love the idea of the pants, (though Chris did say in in the Tiki Barber challenge that pants were nothing more than two sleeves sewn together).

The model's "tummy" billowing out over the pants top was not attractive.

And I think I had a Lanz of Salzburg granny nightgown with the same yolk detailing as Christian's jacket. Really, what's with all the Little House on the Prairie design inspiration this season?

Dani said...

Love the jeans. Too bad they'd make anyone over 90 lbs look like a total fatass. But, I digress.

Ms_flyover said...

Hated the jacket, but the jeans were amazing (even if I couldn't wear them anytime this lifetime.) Loved the button and cuff detail.

Not sure who I really wanted for the win this week, I just know I don't think it should have been Ricky.

Red Seven said...

He reinvented jeans. That's pretty genius.

But he's a conceited little jerk with the attitude, voice, and vocabulary of a 14-year-old girl.

Okay, he's a little overconfident. But before he was a reality star, he was a flamingly gay 21-year old, not that far out of high school. Without knowing too much of his backstory, it's fairly clear to me that 98% of his bravado is a defense mechanism against the haters. For that, I feel weirdly protective of him, actually.

Add to the fact that he's edited for maximum drama (and really the only participant who's providing any real drama to edit), and I'm inclined to cut him some slack.

It's interesting that Jack, Kit, and VictorYA! have all said at some point something along the lines of "he's the most talented of the bunch and deserves the win" ...

DolceLorenzo said...

Dead-on, bitches! I love the look, the attitude and the pants are HOT!
Princess is talented, no doubt about it.

Both Christian and Rami were screwed by the --it wasn't even a twist at the end because the designers weren't told until the competition was over--so the "surprise" that the garment was going to be made and sold. On the pure terms of the original competition, Christian should have won. When is the last time you saw someone do something new with jeans, for goodness sake? Even Heidi said everyone would want them.

Christian's arrogance doesn't bother me in some ways. Any creative endeavor is hard and you have to be confident or you'd stop due to the amount of discouragement you get. The other designers seem aggravated with him, but even Kevin's "I have to say I'm going to kill him every show," or Chris' "Give a bottle and put him to bed," seem tempered by some degree of affection and respect.

The one thing I wish is that he would listen to the judges and to Tim, take in what they say and not reject it out of hand. The young designers who have done well on the show, Daniel V., Michael Knight, have had really strong ability to take in constructive criticism and problem solve in their designs.

oh my god, i want those pants so badly!! they're fierce!

Alex! said...

Levis could have manufactured those jeans. I will be surprised if they don't market a variation on them someday, actually.

The wee cockatoo did a great job, once again!

In other news, how did he get 1979 Margot Kidder away from Richard Donner long enough to model for him? Coup!

Brian said...

It was amazing, and I think it's a shame that the editors feel the need to turn him into a villain before the finale. I guess you live with that on reality TV, though. If he were gone, there would be nothing exciting left to watch on this show.

Manggy said...

I do think that his ideas and construction are quite original and inspired, but it's the details (ruffled bib in particular-- refer to the first picture for my reaction) that really turn me off. Ruffled bib and puffy sleeves-- they're the new "fleurchons."

Anonymous said...

He did it again! Fucking amaing job.....those jeans look fabulous...obviously the rise is a little high but he fit those to his model like a glove!

Anonymous said...

Lanz of Salzburg! I just peed a little.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad your blog mentioned the fact that he managed to make a model look fat.

Why do the judges insist on picking and choosing which unflattering garments to call unflattering?

Anonymous said...

Yes the pants were great but i really did not like that jacket. Or I should say the jacket with those faboo pants.

I just don't think the 2 work together. Lisa's whole styling is so distracting that I thought at first the jacket was all asymmetric and poorly sewn.

Frank

PS yes Princess can be annoying but I think he'll grow out of it.

Anonymous said...

He is so talented, there is no denying that. The whole look was amazing. From the Jacket to the pants to the choice of shoes, makeup hair, he took the challenge to another level.

Anonymous said...

I love Christian's design here, but I'm curious about the model. He had the opportunity to choose Marie, who has been my far-and-above favorite model all season.

Is anyone else totally confused by Lisa?

I feel like Christian could've won with a different model. Why so much loyalty?

Kanani said...

I didn't like the jacket. I thought it did too much. Puff sleeves, ruffle, cut away.

The pants? Well they showed us the model is knock-kneed. But they were the strongest part of the ensemble.

The whole thing was "Motocross visits Lanz of Salzburg."

I watched his home video. Interesting. Nice apartment. Makes me wonder if his parents have ever stopped shelling out money for him.

modernemama said...

The jacket was gorgeous and the jeans, genius. But that white jersey in the middle? That looked like big knickers. He should have sent the model down with a bare tummy.

Gorgeous Things said...

What a spot-on analysis! I liked Christian's look this week, but I was thinking, same-ol same-ol. I'm tired of the sleeve treatments. To me they just scream 2007/2008. But I loved the look on his face when Heidi gave the win to Ricky!

Sewing Siren said...

I am so glad to see the screen caps. I appreciate the jacket much more now.
I thought the parameters for this challenge were really unclear. Iconic, classic, mass marketable??? What ever the challenge was supposed to be Christan did well. I kind of love it when the designers take a challenge and regardless of what it is they kind of make it their own. I don't mind that he is re-using the ruffle and puff anymore than I mind when Rami finds a way to make a drape or Jillian uses a flair skirt.
Denim is a fairly obediant fabric so there construction should have been impeccable (and his was). However cutting up and re-using the existing garments would be difficult and limiting. I don't see this one as the winner, but top three for sure.

GothamTomato said...

When I first saw this jacket, I also thought it was too complicated to be manufactured for Levi's. But then yesterday, I stopped by a Levi store in my neighborhood & what did I see? A short jacket, at least as complicated as Christian's - but is was covered in gingham wickety-wack ($78.) Oy. Christian's would have looked much better in that window.

As for having a limited scope, it seems that way, but it is interesting that he hasn't been called on it the way Rami has.

But, Christian definately deserves to be in the finals.

And as for the complaints about his personality: Personally, I think he's adorable and funny. And also very honest. He is the 14 year old girl in all of us. Just try to imagine this season without him.

On a side note: I was thinking to myself how ironic it is that there have been so many garments on the show this season that are so 80's, just as the recession is really taking a downturn. Turns out these designers are also economic prognosticators.

She said nice things about Christian. "we are really good friends, i love him, hes amazing" blah blah blah" Me and My friends of course tried to get dirt out of her but she would not spill!!! She would not talk badly about anyone (boring, yes) but when I mentioned Rami I SWEAR I CAUGHT HER ROLLING HER EYES!!!! She was with a bunch of other models and people were going up to her all night and she was so composed. She is acutally much prettier in person and I can see why designers want her in shows. PS she said that the next challege is "riske" but she did not say what it was.....i took a picture of her at the party (when she as not looking!) can i upload it?!?! how?

I will concede that this outfit was impressive from the standpoint of creativity and construction under adverse conditions, but damn. It made that anorexic model look like a sausage with legs. And the puffy sleeves are really beginning to wear on me.

That said, the Princess is entertaining, not unlike a small, yappy Pomeranian who can balance a ball on his nose while standing on his hind legs. :-)

Haven't in the past there been discussions about what is on the runway is not necessarily meant to be worn exactly like that on "real" people?

I don't watch PR expecting to see clothing I would wear (mid-40's, shaped like a box, a few extra pounds). I watch to see Amazing designs, personality, designing, and drama. If I want to see clothes made for my age and shape, I would go to JC Penney.

I love Christian. He's so darn cute. Sure he's full of himself but most 21 year olds are, especially anyone with talent and brains. He seems like a nice guy with a great sense of humor.

I wasn't a huge fan of this outfit: the model looks like she is suffering a full-body wedgie. It looks like someone grabbed her from the back and YANKED everything up, HARD.

Anonymous said...

didn't jay fly under the radar during the whole season, and then ended up winning?

and i would say that jeffrey's range was pretty limited and narrowed, and he ended up winning.

and chloe's final collection was FUG, and she ended up winning because her previous designs on the show were marketable.

so, i think christian has all three of those qualities. he gets snubbed for the win a lot. his clothes have a narrowed range (point of view). and they are marketable because people want to wear his designs, whether they would look good in them or not.

Anonymous said...

Chris has presented a narrow range of designs this season. Also the Bravo editing monkeys have not shown any back story footage on him at all. Could this mean he makes it to the F3? Hmmmm...

Anonymous said...

i liked this outfit, but i agree, he should have sent her down the runway with a bare midriff.

also, i think the pants would have been cooler with the plackets on the outside of the ankles instead of the inside.

k.

Anonymous said...

It amazes me that Rami has the rep of being one note and Christian doesn't.

Rami has gone to the "draping" bag of tricks only three times in nine episodes -- episode 1 (vision), episode 7 (prom) and episode 8 (avant garde). In addition, he's created gorgeous non-draped looks in the Bitten/SJP episode, the Hershey's episode and the weight loss "everyday woman" episode.

Christian has done his siganture pleated tops and/or puffy-sleeved jackets in SIX of nine challenges (vision, Bitten, outdated trends, weight loss, avant garde and denim).

I think both are talented, and I think Christian is excellent television (he's compulsively watchable)....but let's be fair:

Rami Dearest has shown MUCH more depth.

Even Heidi said everyone would want them.

Didn't she say, "I think we'd all want a pair" meaning her, Nina and the Levis woman? Because all of them were like size 2 also, which made me laugh a little. It's not like they're representative of the general population, in terms of what they can and can't wear.

Anne

GothamTomato said...

I agree, Princess Puffysleeves did live up to his name again with the jacket, but it is interesting to look at the way he handled the ruffle.

I think a ruffle is an extremely tricky design element. Handled just right, a ruffle can add fun and interest to a garment. Handled not so well, it can make a normal woman look like she's channeling Baby Jane Hudson.

I think Christian handled the element well. I may disagree with the complicatedness of some of his designs, but within that complicatedness, he does handle elements well and with flair.

I just love Christian! He's adorable and thank GOD he is on the show. Otherwise it would be quite blah this season. Thank you, TLO, for such hilarous recaps of everything. You guys make the show SO much fun! Bravo should be paying you lots of $$$$$$$$$$!

Me too. But I also think the marketabilty aspect does apply to judging, with a challenge like this one, that is for a mass-market company like Levi's (where it would not have applied to the challenge before).

I would like to see more challenges that are more flamboyant and aren't tied to the ground as much, (ie; red carpet in Cannes, performance garments, a Broadway show costume, a gown for the Costume Institute Ball. But I'd also love to see a challenge where they update common ready-to-wear items, that professional women need, but with imaginative flair (ie; suits, trench, overcoats).

Yes, yes, fabulous jeans! tired jacket (but impeccably made). Didn't deserve the win but certainly up at the top.

I have an issue with the bravada, but that's more of knee-jerk reaction to people who should know better. I'm growing more fond of chuckling at "kids" and their outloo on themselves. Can you say "getting old!!!"

Anonymous said...

I guess it's partly a function of my age, but I have hard time characterizing Christian's ruffled bibs and puffy sleeves as 'edgy'.

Way back when, in my youth, these were alterations made, or embellishments tacked on, to many garments to enhance their 'girliness'.

I don't know what 80's you lived through, but the one's I lived in were some of the most inovative and creative (design wise)ever.
Vivinne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, and John Galliano (pre couture) produced some some of their best ever collections. Also Body Map, Richmond/Cornejo, Betsy Johnson and Norma Kamali. There was also some really cool stuff going on in industrial design and music. If you don't believe me look it up in old copies of Details or iD magazine. I hate to go on about it like some Hippie waxing about the 60's , but the 80's were fierce.

Anonymous said...

I loved the jeans concept but the jacket, well, I really didn't like it. But that's not to say that it wasn't "a look."

I congratulate Christian on being the only one who actually did jeans and then did something really cute with them. Could I wear them? No. But did I like the ideas? oh yes, yes, yes.

I hate puffy sleeves, Princess Puffysleeves. hate. HATE!

I don't think anybody wuz robbed this week because there were several good looks to go around.

I've written this before and am not saying anything new, but saying icon, icon, icon and then after the challenge was over say "and we want to sell it in a range of sizes" was really unfair. I doubt that Christian would have done anything differently, though.

Unknown said...

I like Christian for his entertainment value and he most definitley has shown he has incredible sewing skills but I found nothing about this outfit to be attractive. The jeans are truly unwearable (and I know I've seen very tight pants with that kind of ankle detail before, I don't think it's anything "new")and the jacket was just ugly.

I still think Christian is very talented and will likely make it to Bryant Park.

Anonymous said...

No one has mentioned that Christian had immunity for this challenge. I think he was going more for a look that would stir up some interest and show off his skills a bit.

I loved the outfit (jeans more than jacket, though) and I'm impressed he was able to complete it in one day. Our princess has the real ability to work within the limitations of the challenges and come up with some really fascinating clothes. Apparently, his education really paid off.

Fnarf said...

"98% of his bravado is a defense mechanism against the haters."

Exactly. And he's funny, and sharp as a tack. I'd rather spend an hour talking to him at a party than personality-free Rami, that's for damn sure. People make fun of Jillian for being an ice queen (including me) but Rami's the real frozen one in my opinion.

Christian is one of the great PR personalities, every bit as fun to watch as Austin or Jay. He needs a foil, though -- he started with Jack a little, and now Chris, but he's still not getting the kind of sass back from anyone that would make him shine more. I think he's great. And very skilled.

Anonymous said...

I adore Christian - super talented, hilarious, and annoying (but in an endearing way, not a mean Jeffrey way). I think he has a huge career ahead of him and the one note stuff is probably because he is so young (also, it is a note I like). I did not however like this too much. In those jeans the model looked like Mr. Tumnus from the movie version of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Ms_flyover said...

The princess may be a conceited little thing, but he's so cute about it. The reason I don't mind all the arrogance is that it isn't offset by the nastiness Santino and Jeffrey brough to the table - I can't see Christian making anyone's Mom cry.

Besides, I may not be fond of his aesthetic (thanks, I did HS inthe 80's once - that was enough), but at least he hasn't produced anything as hideous as the skating Turkey on fire outfit...

Homofascist said...

I actually love Christian. I feel like he is the little sister I never had. I mean, he needs to get slapped around a little bit, but that can be arranged. I think he is important to the show, especially considering the previous post here about lack of personality. Do you realize how even more boring this season would be without him around?

I like Christian, sure - he's entertaining. But his outfits aren't very stunning. Every other week his garments have that really bizarre mid-line ruffle ...thing, complete with pointy shoulder pads that should have been left in the 80s.

This design is no different.

I think that's been one of the issues with this season. We haven't really gotten to know any of the designers and we see very little interaction between them. There's been no drama (except with Jack turning into the Elephant Man) -- the only thing these people have done is sleep and design.

The previous seasons felt like "designers go to camp." This season is "designers go to work."

tlo, you hit the nail right on the head. i was trying to figure out what it was that bothered me about the jacket -- when you pointed out that it made her look like she had a beer gut i realized that was it! i've been saying it looks like she got dressed in a hurry and accidentally pulled out her little sister's jacket -- too too small! and the lanz of salzburg comment is right on.... btw - they are flannel nightgowns - very little house on the prairie style - i think everyone in my sorority in college in the 70's had one.

that said, i continue to be amazed at princess's skill -- i don't like him and his arrogance, but at least he really does have a tremendous amount of talent. LOVED the jeans -- so innovative - what a way to redesign something so basic.

Totally agree: I want to be surprised by the designs each week; not just see things that are pretty.

I thought Christian should have won this week but I don't think he was robbed, either. The judges were clearly looking for something "timeless" and, as great as that jacket was, it was not timeless.

I HATED this. Unfortunately, I cannot imagine this looking good on any female form. While I respect his ability to accomplish it in such a short amount of time, his designs scream "I hate women!" to me.

Again with the '80's vibe. Yuck.

Hated it then, hate it more now. Good grief, I was a teen in the '80's. Believe me, it was a bad decade for fashion.

I love the idea of the pants, (though Chris did say in in the Tiki Barber challenge that pants were nothing more than two sleeves sewn together).

I disagree with Chris. Pants can be a bitch to make fit correctly, unless you're making pajamas pants.

Christian really is raw talent, and I can see him doing amazing things in a few years. He only needs to learn how to listen to others (Tim Gunn, for example) and take a positive view of criticism; he's young, he'll get there.

LOVE Christian. Saying it loud, saying it proud. He makes me laugh every time he opens his mouth on the show. Talking in such an uber-dramatic way and putting yourself up on a pedestal is always funny to me. I really think Christian is always half-kidding, half-not. I mean, how can you take yourself seriously if you will agree to be carried around in a tote bag on camera? The guy is gifted for sure, has realized it, and believes in himself - I think the trash talk is just a push to keep himself believing and also trying to blow off some tension. And you have to admit there is a kernel of truth in most of what he says. My bet is that he hosts his own Style show after PR is over.

And love his stuff. Yeah, I hope he gets out of his ruffle rut for the next challenge, but seeing him put those sleeves on the jeans, I was like, "the kid is genius".

I thought Ricky's looked like an outfit I rocked back in 1990. Flounced denim hem? Yikes.

I work with high school drama students, which means I get to interact with a lot of babyfags. (I love them.) Christian reminds me *so much* of one of my little gay boys, it's uncanny. Of course, Christian is four years older than this kid and ought to be four years more mature, but hell, I was a bit of an idiot when I was 21, too.

My husband thinks Christian is beyond annoying, and can't stand him. I ... keep going back and forth. But deep down, I sort of love him, just as I love my four-years-younger version of him. I would like to see both of them mature, and gain some perspective about themselves and the world ... but I can also see the insecurity and need to be loved that is behind a lot of the arrogance.

Shrug. I would not argue against anyone who says they hate the Princess ... but ... I kind of love him. (Ducking)

The jeans are easily the best part.

I'm confused at the showing the white t-shirt belly exposure. It would've probably looked a lot better to just have nothing underneath, and show some belly. Did we even see it without the jacket? It was probably just a boring T-shirt.

Unless the white cotton is part of the jacket, which, if that's it, gag me. God.

Anonymous said...

I'm with tripletmom96. For all the objections to the jacket, no one else has voiced my sole complaint: it's too short. I realize it's supposed to be a shrunken piece, but it just comes off looking ill-executed to me. A bit of length to the jacket and I'd wear the whole shebang.

ChelseaNH said...

"Beer gut" -- yes! I was thinking that very thing, and there it was on the page! It's almost an accomplishment, making such a dinky woman look like she has a pudgy midsection.

I like the sleeve detail on the pants legs; I think it's clever. The jacket, not so much. It's beautifully constructed, but besides the whole "been there, done that" thing with the puffy sleeves and ruffles, I think it's trying too hard.

Christian has some annoying qualities (in spades), but I think they spring from a desire to be one of the gang. He wants to be liked, so he tends to stay on the likeable side of annoying, instead of crossing over into asshole territory. So lets hope this experience doesn't go to his head, or he's going to wind up feeling entitled to our approval and turn into an asshole.

Milla said...

Sweet babies,
I pretty much agree with everything but would argue a couple of points.
I think he should have won. The jacket is pure "Chicken a la King of the World" but the jeans would have made every woman I know from Moscow to Tishamingo, OK get on a bloody waiting list to procure a pair of those glorious pants.
Just the jeans on their own earnt him the win in my book.
The other one is that PR IS a sewing competition. You can design without ever sewing a stitch and being a designer does not necessarily require being a fast or brilliant tailor or seamstress. Two diferent skill sets although you need to have an fairly adavnced understanding on both to be good at either.
If it truly was a fashion design competition and not "little bit design but mostly sewing" competition they would have a few seamstresses, embroidery people and a couple of tailors on the show bringing to life the designers vision.
That is how it happens in the industry. I don't think Karl Lagerfeld has threaded a machine since like 1979.
If they were allowed to concentrate solely on the design aspect and they had a construction team, the results would be truly and consistently spectacular.
On the other hand, I am a plus-girl. And I LOVE my skinny jeans. I wear them ALL the time and they look FIERCE and I feel awesome wearing them. I also wear high-waisted jeans. And they look brilliant. I am plus but have a perfect hourglass figure and a flat stomach.
Which goes to show that so called "fashion experts" who give fashion advice have no clue what they are talking about.
Love,
Milla

tired of the ruffle and puffle jackets from our Princess. I LOVED these jeans, though. And - I don't know anything about jeans or fashion, except what I've learned here - but I could see those jeans being manufactured in different cuts to accommodate other body sizes. For me, the button detailing and the cuffs are what make those jeans fabulous - they don't HAVE to be supersnug skinny jeans to include those elements.

I would buy those jeans in a heartbeat if they came in my (short, round) size.

But Christian sweetie - you need to move beyond the ruffle-puffle jacket. i HATE them!

I also agree wholeheartedly that Christian's arrogance is bravado and not true arrogance (a la Rami). The prom episode, when Christian crumpled, was very revealing of him as what he is: a VERY young, but very talented, designer. After that episode I have been a Christian fan; before it, I was on the fence.

Chris + Christian is like my life dream team of friends/designers/everything.

Those two ideas aren't mutually exclusive. Besides, they made the point that the clothes don't even look flattering on a size zero model.

agreed. while it was a very good design, with loads of innovation and pretty flawless execution, i still don't think it deserved to win.

i have the same quibble over the beer gut on the fat-free model, as well as the now-tired ruffles and puffy sleeves. I'm also put off by how wonky these particular puffy sleeves turned out. they just look really weird and tacked-on to me.

plus, this outfit doesn't really fulfill the brief. it's not really 501, and it would be atrocious on anyone over a size 0. even he admitted that the model had trouble getting into it. and if she had problems squeezing into those jeans, there's just no hope for the rest of us mere mortals.

although, i gotta say, it would probably look pretty bitchin' on the princess himself.

This is far from being my favorite outfit by Christian (bad as the back of it was, I even prefer the much maligned prom dress for Maddie,) but it still should have won. The fussy details can be annoying, but he works them very well into the over-all design. And his sewing skills are pretty awesome. It seems clear to me he's the best designer on this show since Jay McCarroll. I'm a little interested in the character he's playing on this show, the bratty schoolboy. There's a touch of Rimbaud there, I guess, but as with Rimbaud, it was always the matter of poetry that mattered most. No doubt he's in it for the long haul (unlike Arthur)and he's working in a more commercial and transitory field, so I don't expect him to drop out when he hits twenty-five. I am looking forward to little more subversion.
I have a feeling he'll ace the next challenge.
Thanks awful much.
Dale.

The 80s I lived through were big shoulder pads, tight pants with boots or leg warmers, huge hair! Oh, the horror!!

I wasn't into the type of fashion as you referenced, although I did live and work in NYC. I was talking about what people wore in the lower classes.

I do think this look should have won, but from Levi's point of view there aren't really that many size 0 biker chicks out there. But there are a lot of people would go and buy yet another dress.

The jacket's pattern is amazing - I love how he inserted the pockets off seam and used the princess lines to'cordon' them off (the fact that they could be functional is even more of a plus) and the bust seams are perfect. Everyone is so fixated on the Christian formula that you only see the puff sleeves and the pleated bib, but don't notice the great high collar made from the button fly (which would be amazing buttoned up) or the fact that he varied the puff sleeves this time by making them with contrasting fabric insets in a really different pattern. The silhouette may not change as much which doesn't entertain television audiences ("Jump through hoops! Entertain US! Make something different even if we will never buy any of your stuff and we aren't your customer base!") but Christian is seriously talented AND skilled, and he just likes what he likes. But he isn't doing one note boring like Ricky is - how many simple babydolls can that crybaby put through?

Anonymous said...

The jeans were fantastic. I think he very well could have won on those alone. But the jacket was horrible. He seems to do the same thing over and over, and often the fit is really unflattering.

Anonymous said...

I did say WOW when this came down the runway.

Re: the jeans not made for real women: is it supposed to be? OF COURSE they are exaggerated. I always thought that high fashion is exaggerated...and then you take certain concepts and inject it into "everyday wear"...um, kind of like that avant-garde and ready to wear challenge? Maybe I'm wrong about this.

PS - Another indication of his fascination with the 80s...his liberal use of the word barf. I bet he also uses "As if" and "gag me" and "rad"...

Anonymous said...

I agree with you TLo about the beer gut and the repetitive puffy syndrome. I like the cuffs at the bottom of the jeans, but it may be because I covet those boots. Are those the boots Christian's real-life model wore for the weight loss challenge win? She looked good in them too.

As far as Christian's personality goes, I don't mind the bravado. It's the whining that makes me want to grab him by his cockatoo and swing him over my head like a lariat.

Anonymous said...

I don't really understand. Was anyone all that surprised that Levi's decided to sell the winning dress? Or at least that there was the potential for it to happen?

Levi's provided the fabrics, the notions, and the Levi's head of design (or whatever her title was) as a judge. You do the math.

That said, Christian's outfit definitely shows off his mad skillz in the sewing department. I give him props for an interesting take on the jeans but that jacket was scary.

Mom said...

The concept of the jeans was fantabulous and I honor the decision to make them sausage-casing tight because it helped him show off his mad skillz. BUT everything above those pants seem conspired to make the model look so short-torsoed, she almost looks like she has spina bifida. It's really, really not attractive. At all. Those pants cried out for something lean and equally elongating on top, but Princess doesn't seem to have embraced that aesthetic.

I agree with Anonymous 3:59 - are we *sure* the designers didn't know this or are we just assuming it because *we* didn't hear it in the edit?

In any case, yeah, if you're getting all that stuff and there's a snowball's hell in chance of the product actually being produced, you sew that stuff up with that assumption.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Anonymous said...

I thought the jeans were pretty clever, but not nearly as innovative as the judges were making out. I hate the jacket--too many discordant elements going on. And if the cut of your jacket makes a super-skinny model look like she's got a beer gut, it's just not a good design.

Speaking of Santino's turkey costume, did anyone see the Fashion on Ice show they did a couple of weeks ago on NBC? Someone (Heatherette?) gave Sasha Cohen a costume with lots of feathers around the bottom--very full around the butt area. Although much prettier than Santino's turkey suit, it definitely reminded me of it.

Well, I didn't get the love for this look at all, but at least I can see where everyone's coming from now. The innovation on the collar and the fit on the pants is pretty amazing, when seen from up close. I just couldn't get over the silhouette from afar, as the outfit makes her look hunch-backed and dumpy, and that the skin-tight jeans manages to find the fat even on a model's legs.

And yeah, the puffy sleeves. Yawn. I understand being influenced by the 80s (I'm only a few years older than Christian, so I share his subliminal influence), but how about being influenced by a different look from them once in a while? Come on.

I am grateful that he made that one spectacular dress with Chris. Even if I can't root for him wholeheartedly, I at least know he has some other kind of talent in his repertoire.

(By the way, anyone else think it's ironic that he was retching about "another tube dress" when he put out the most basic tube dress imaginable on the runway during the Hershey challenge?)

I was really surprised by the judges positive reaction to this oufit. It was well-sewn but unbalanced and unflattering even on a human stick. Too fussy for an iconic look. What was good about it was that it has the correct silohuette for denim, close to the body. That's also what was wrong with the two coats by girls. Wrong silohuette for denim. Denim needs to be fit like jeans. Too many dresses, too. Someone should have done a sharp little poor boy skirt and jacket. Christian's outfit without the muss n'fuss could have nailed the Levi iconic look. It was a great challenge but no one really rose to the icon occasion.

greetings. In part I agree with you :)
....yet 'iconic' is a mighty robust word for the PR challenge to toss around.

Deriative-Iconic would, imho, would've been better word-age.

As a graphics designer, I can assure you that "creating" a culturally iconic image(garment) is something that MAY happen only once in the entire career -lifetime of an artist.

10 hours with denim fabric... presewn panels no wider than 6 inches, is not really anyone's idea of a good start to iconic stature. Considering that, I commend them all for having finished garments.

The pants, to me, were very moto-cross inspired and I loved them. They kinda gave the model a phantom-package, but I'm giving Christian a pass on that because it wasn't stretch denim and somehow she could still walk. (two points)

The jacket was twee. (half a point for excellent construction)

I think I'm warming to Sassy-pants. I hope he doesn't have early success to the degree he rides off the rails, but I will concede Kudos for this lastest presentation.

It seems clear to me he's the best designer on this show since Jay McCarroll.

Seems clear to me too. Jay will always be in a class by himself, but Christian is leaving his own little mark. I actually thought of Jay and the way he drew inspiration from the Chrysler building for his Banana Republic dress when Christan was talking about taking cues from the trucker jacket to design his version of the modern biker babe. And just like the Chrysler building dress lost to Wendy's boring LBD, Christian's innovative jean creation lost to Ricky's boring LBD. A damn annoying decision on both counts.

I covet those jeans something fierce. I thought my favorite little detail was the way the jacket cuffs at the bottom of the jeans open on the inside of the ankle. But then I got a closer look and fell in love with the buttons on the calves.

I'm also fine with the ruffles and the puffy sleeves showing up in multiple designs. (Course I just bought a Christian-esque silk blouse at Arden B yesterday. Puffy sleeves were everywhere in the mall, btw. So not just 80s anymore.) I prefer the designers who have a clearly defined aesthetic to the ones who merely get through each challenge making something pretty in a nondescript way. And other than the inclusion of puffy sleeves and/or pleating and/or ruffles, I don't think the transformation challenge top is really all that similar to the jeans jacket or the RTW blouse from last week. They look like three distinct pieces to me.

Anonymous said...

I have to admit I loved the jeans, but the jacket was a little too granny nascar for me.

I also don't have much of a problem with his attitude. I think the real him came out in the prom challenge. The bitchiness and arrogance is just a defense mechanism for a really young, insecure kid who is hurt by criticism way more than he can ever allow himself to admit. I know; I used to be that kid.

That said, I agree that plenty of successful designers have a specific niche that they stick to, but we don't tune in every week to see people cranking out the same jacket every other week. Or gown (coughRamicough). I can tell that Princess has way more in him than more '80s throwback jackets. I just wish we'd see it more often, like we did this week with his jeans.

When you put it that way, though, I think his near-misses will be very good for him. Even if it's just a reflection of the arbitrariness of the world, that's an important lesson to learn, too.

i keep reading all of the posts about the awesome fit of the jeans -- but the more i look at them the more i'm convinced that the fit is the reason the model has a "beer" belly. (think about corsets -- where did everything go when that thing was cinched up?? either up or down...). even christian admitted that the model had a difficult time getting them on. let's face it -- even super-skinny models have SOME body fat -- and the majority of it is going to be in the hips & tuch...but the cuffs were fierce!

and for those who are complaining about the fashion of the 80's -- hang on, because fashion repeats itself about every 40 years (20's/60's/2000; 30's/70's; 40's/80's, etc.) i figure we have about 10 more years before it's back with a vengeance. sure there will be variations, but you can bet we'll start seeing the shoulder pads, etc. again.

Those jeans are fantastic, and his use of the materials was inspired. His limited range in the jacket area is a bit of a problem, but he's very young -- I'm sure that he'll grow out of the puffysleeves soon. I don't think he's going to win this season, but I hope he comes away from PR with a store of good contacts and new ideas (although it will probably take a while for him to start using any of those ideas, and when he does, he'll probably claim that he came up with them himself).

In any event, the little pocket gay makes me smile every episode. Good luck, little princess!

I must say that being in any creative field is fraught with getting rejections. As someone who started in the visual arts and now also writes, I know rejection is is part and parcel. The critique is an essential part of any creative person's career. And sometimes it seems like he has stopped listening, which is why we get a variation of the same top over and and over again.

I will add, I think the "beer gut" perception was created by the fact that the t shirt beneath was white. I think black might have been a better styling choice. Keep the focus on the denim but not what's peeking out underneath.

i don't understand his choice of model either. Either she's thick around the middle* or he just can't fit her probably because she almost always looks lumpy or tubular to me. (especially in that blue dress he made waaaay back at the beginning of the season...blech.) i'm guessing he's to blame.

* relatively speaking, of course. i'm guessing she doesn't break triple digits on the scale.

The more I look at it, the better it gets. It's a slyly funny ensemble, a tough biker-chick outfit with witty femme details. The kid has a sense of visual humor that is years beyond his verbal skills. It was seriously ambitious, given the time constraints, and I didn't see him resorting to the glue-gun like his chief rivals on the show, Rami and Jillian. He should make one of these for Sweet P.
Thanks again,
Dale.

I think Chris hit the nail on the head. Someone needs to give him a bottle and put him to bed.

we are obsessed with christian and his model! maybe we are a lil bit crazy here in la or something but e think they are hot and we love them! they are made for eachother!

Completely agree! He is so cute! And his model is pretty "high fashion" as he said. Come on you guys...the girls on runays dont have waists...they are hangers.....straight skinny lil bitchez! He is fitting these in such little time....give him some credit!

Lanz of Salzburg!

Too funny.

I'm not crazy about puffy sleeves, but Christian did a great job this challenge. I'll be happy if he makes it to the final three, happier still if he wins.

Princess Puffysleeves is one of my favorites. He's young and has a way to go before anyone would call him mature, but he's extremely talented. I admire his confidence, but wish he would listen to mentor-types like Tim.

If he plays his cards right, he will have a successful career in fashion in one form or another.

ass on those things is scary, and the proportions make her look funny. I hated it.

Every time I see Princess I think of the Prince and Sheena Easton song--U Got the Look. Come on, just run a couple lines of lyrics and tell me how fabulous Puffy would be singing that song in a video remake, I am just not sure who would sing the part of Prince??

I would buy those jeans. They are uber-cool. and distinctive. which is hard to be in the world of boring jeans.

How can the Levi's judge say that he's the only one who came up with a new style of jeans and NOT WIN?

Princess, you was robbed!

I hope he wins the big prize, is all I can say.

And he should have jumped on the opportunity to change models. That girl has a very weird face, and the redhead and one or two others make clothes look a lot more chic and fabulous.

So in spite of his so-called arrogance and immaturity, he's a loyal little tike... or just superstitious?
