On The Couch

Thursday, January 17, 2008 by
In the 18 months since we started this blog, we have received more compliments than we ever could have imagined. Seriously. That's not false modesty. Anyway, the one compliment that tickles us more than any other is the one so many of our commenters make: "I wish I could be on the couch with you boys on Wednesday nights."

We suspect that many people think we sit around dressed to the nines, sipping something pink and spouting one bitchy bon mot after another and just being generally fabulous. In truth, if we're alone, we're in our jammies at that point and if we have guests, we're usually crankily shushing them so we can hear every word. Our critiques tend to be nothing more than "Ew." or "That's adorable." Are we shattering your illusions, darlings?

Well, you'll be happy to know that if we had informed you of it ahead of time you REALLY would have wished you were on the couch with us last night. Why?

THAT'S why.

Let's backtrack, shall we?

If you're a regular reader of our poor lamented (but soon to see a return to greatness! Promise!) sister blog, T Lo, you may remember that we moved this past summer. A couple months ago, we were taking a stroll through the new 'hood when someone who looked suspiciously like Jay McCarroll drove by in a big-ass car. We had heard that he moved back to Philly recently, so we dropped him a line and said "Hey, was that you we saw driving down so-and-so street in our neighborhood the other day in a big-ass car?" Not only did he confirm that it was, but after a little backing and forthing, we came to realize that the Runway gods have a wonderful sense of humor: Jay lives three blocks from us. How's that for a kick? Even better, he said "Hey, we should get together and watch the show some time." We were all "Whatever. If that's what you want." No, actually we were all "YES. NAME THE DATE." and proceeded to sharpen our claws for the Primo Bitchfest that was to come.

And was it ever primo. We had originally planned to maybe do an interview and then write a post talking about the experience of watching Project Runway with the person who originally made us fans, but the interview idea was quickly scrapped when Jay started off with "So let's trade gossip. What do you know?" Well, the wine got poured (and poured and poured) and the stories started flowing, none of which will we recap here. Sorry, ladies.

Not that it was all gossip. The most interesting parts of the conversation were when Jay talked about the insanity of being an instant reality television star and how that fucked with his head and how much he despised New York and how happy he is now that he's in a place where he feels he belongs. We talked about his teaching gig (loves it) and his upcoming QVC line (summer) and we bitched about the fact that the show doesn't seem to care about finding new talent anymore so much as it does about showcasing already established designers. Jay is whip smart and funny and self-deprecating and still likes to try and shock people. In other words, he's exactly what you think he is. And yes, he brought it up: "I can't BELIEVE you guys liked Kit's dress last week!"

Oh! And watching the show with him was a fucking TREAT. Without *ahem* naming names, certain people would flash on screen and Jay would yell out *ahem* certain things about them and...well...let's just say it was entertaining and leave it at that. We'll say one thing: we're never going to look at those montages at Mood the same way again.

Sorry darlings, we're not trying to be teases here (okay, maybe just a little), but when we tell a designer (as we have many times) "None of this will get mentioned on the blog," we mean it. Jay is Jay and he's funny and not afraid to share his opinion, so we wanted to give him free reign to be himself. If he thought we were going to transcribe his every utterance he would have been on his guard and the whole night would have been a lot less fun for everyone.

So, we're sorry that we can't really give you any specifics of the convo, but how could we not share this little event with you? Suffice it to say that of the many rewards this blog has sent our way, watching an episode with Jay McCarroll ranks right up there at the top.

And Jay, if you're reading this: We may never be able to eat Camembert again. Thanks a lot.

Jealously is so unbecoming. Thank you for making us look less than fabulous today - we are all green with envy - not at all attractive.

Oh and by the way - since you won't tell us what Jay said, we will just have to fantasize and you know that can't be good.

Glad you all had a lovely evening.

I have to say that each of you looks fantastic. How much fun was that?

When I see Jay in the opening montage this season in his red hat on the runway at Bryant Park, I miss the good ole days of Jay.

Love and miss you Jay.

Filthy Whores, the three of you.

i was watching on my heinous purple couch, blowing my nose every ten seconds and choking down Alka-Seltzer while my father (who is a total square) bugged me to change the channel.

I don't think I'm the only one that is sure that Jay McCarroll is the cure for the common cold.

I am so jel. You don't even understand.

Jay, cure me.

Wow! I can't think of a better episode to watch with Jay. I've always loved him and still think he had the best final runway. What I love about him, and Chris, and Laura is their humor, it's based in reality. Good for you guys and I wish Jay well, I just wish we could see more of him.

Two words for you Boys:

I'm so happy for you and all of your success...you deserve every single bite out of this apple. And more! I love it that you shared even the parts of this with us that you did. THANK YOU Bitches!!!!

I swear someone should give you your own reality show or something...this is just way too over the top. And you've earned every bit of it. CHEERS!

And Hi Jay! YOU are incomparable!!!

I am SO GLAD to hear about Jay and QVC and am dying to see his work! And with luck, I'll run across him in Philly sometime and can do my own personal stalkage.

God, I love Jay. I was just telling someone the other day, there will never be another one like him. There's never been someone on that show who I've wanted so much to succeed. Still, without a doubt, the all time greatest Bryant Park collection, and still, years later, more fashion forward than anything on the show.

I knew before I even started reading the comments that every other one would be "I hate you." SO jealous. Jay has been so genuine, so talented and so missed. I think a few weeks ago I read Daniel stating that the show needs more new talent, and that's been the belief for most for some time now, hasn't it?

Chris channels Jay at times with his wicked humor, and he seems so...gracious. And dare I say it? I'm starting to grow fond of Christian in his own little fierce way?

Apropos of nothing--I really hate how they edit these shows...and everyone complains of this: they will deliberately not show you how someone is coming along with their work, and you think, "Wait a minute, what did ____design....I never saw it."

Sitting with Jay watching that show would be....bliss. Pure bliss.

"tlo said: Not that it was all gossip. The most interesting parts of the conversation were when Jay talked about the insanity of being an instant reality television star and how that fucked with his head..."

It would be very interesting to hear an interview with him about what he thinks, now that his head is cleared from that instant fame rush. I'm wondering if he would do anything differently, now, (like take the 100k) if he had it to do over.

Unfortunately for many who go through it, fame doesn't come with an instruction manual. And TV fame is like fame, on steroids. When I was younger, I experienced a different kind of 15 minutes, but was lucky enough to have professional support to deal with it. But even with that support, it spun my head around for a while. All those people who want to be around you & tell you, 'you're fabulous, you're the star, you don't need them, etc.' All that feeds into the ego/insecurity of the creative personality.

Instant TV fame is like a hundred times more intense than what I experienced. Even with support, that kind of intensity would have made me completely crazy at that age, at least for a while (which is why I have sympathy for Jack).

It's an odd thing. Personally, I think Jay should write a comic novel about his experience.

I confess, I know very little about bandwidth or website issues.

I'm quite suprised, given jays fanbase, that he doesn't have his own site showcasing his work or items for sale.

I think last night just proves that Jay isn't this bitter bitch that some think he is. I mean when he said some things about Tim you guys said your opinions and reactions.

Jay obviously doesn't have any bad feeling towards the two of you for speaking your mind.
I understand why Jay felt the way he did about the things Tim said.
If you watch his Elle photoshoot on the DVD bonus features, he was really treated like crap. Tim totally played both sides in that case. Supporting Jay in one convo, then calling Nina and taking a totally different stance.

Alas, i still like them both very much and would watch shows with either of them anytime.

You posted awhile back about a documentary type show about Jay and his collection. There was a website too. i checked it for awhile but it was never updated with any new info.

Did that show already air and i somehow missed it?
Did it not air yet?
Did it get cancelled altogether?
Has a date been set for Jay to appear on QVC also? I sure do not want to miss that.

How's this for acronyms?

I love S4. PP and Sissybear were matched well. However, Sweet P and The Drape were 2 bad.

Ya Ya and J-Girl produced something fierce, however, their medication induced commentary made me think --Bride of Frankenstein? "I was feeling horror..." so were we, baby girl.

Cryboy and Kit missed the boat altogether. Kit --think Cirque Du Soleil and weird music if you want to push avant garde! You were so close, but didn't quite make it. Cryboy --LOSE that silhouette. We've seen it since the 70's.

Not enuf TG in this episode and can MK quit saying "Soignee?"

Ditto to everything. To the person who suggested local watchings, try Meetup.com next year (too late for this year, I'd say).

Just wanted to add this: the show doesn't seem to care about finding new talent anymore so much as it does about showcasing already established designers

This is why I think Rami wins. PR is desperate to find that "next great American designer" and Rami's already 3/4 of the way there. Plus, he has business sense, which Tim keeps harping on in those NYT articles about reality stars (one about J. Sebelia, one about Bravo winners in general).

Someone said "But could they take credit for having discovered him, if he's already that established?" Hell to the yes, do you think that would stop Bravo? He's not a tabloid name yet, but they could pull out all the stops and make him one.

Christian, Chris, Victorya and Jillian, not so much.

Anonymous said...

What a gyp! You two are quite a pair of teases. C'mon. Ask Jay if it's ok to dish a little.

I've been quoted by TLo!!!!111

My life as a faghag is now complete. :-)

Y'all, DO take a look at Jay's purses. I wish I could afford more.

Damn you bitches to hell! I have one huge jealous heart!

I suppose any stories about Wendy Pepper are also off the record, yes? Congrats, you guys! What's next? Watching PR marathons on Klum and Seal's plasma?

I alone am not jealous. I love Jay as a designer and would happily buy and wear a hundred things of his we've seen on PR and after, but he's got a touch of the mean, and I'm afraid that, in person, he'd bite.

(By the way, nice haircut, Tom! You look great.)

I'm going to be honest. I'm more jealous of your relationship with Laura. Jay may be funny and bitchy, in a drunken gay way, but Laura has the whole package.

you lucky lucky bitches....

can we get maybe a little bit of gossip? please?!?!?!

or can you do a contest where the winner gets to sit in on your next jay viewing party?

You didn't shatter my illusions. I'd much prefer to join you on a couch in *my* jammies (flannel nightie) and a big bowl of popcorn instead of feelling like we're three mis-cast members of a bad Noel Coward revue.

Glad you had fun with Jay. People will go nuts trying to figure out what he said and about whom.

I spent the afternoon on yesterday telling my hairstylist about this blog, the fabulosity of this week (this Jay post) , our Boys, etc. He doesn't even watch the show (yet), much less read this blog (yet) but he was all "invite them to come to Phoenix! I want to meet them!". (he's auditioning for Shear Genius btw).

The Fabulosity has a life of it's own and is taking over the World.

oh. so. jealous.

But inevitable that you darlings would start to attract the Names & Faces to your couch.

Bravo execs, listen up! Your next reality show "T Lo's Couch", where fabulosity gathers for hilarious (but always charming and juicily addictive) rip-fests of Bravo reality shows.

Not kidding here.

Gotham Tomato: how about an Alex/Jay collaboration?

By the way I have to say thats a fabulous picture of the three of you!!!

Does anyone remember a show called Mystery Science 3000? (if not I will lend you my DVD collection- great show!) How amazing would a show like that be.....viewing PR with TLo every week with guest commentators every week like Jay. Laura, Uncle Nick, Gotham Tomato....etc??????

Total coolness! I bet it's nice for both you and him to have friends in the new neighborhood!
:-)
And I am probably so out of it, but when you can, maybe you can do an update on Jay. Maybe I just haven't paid close enough attention, but the last I knew of Jay was that he was in NYC and all, and to hear that he's moved and teaching...I get all my PR news from you guys, after all!

And I love Jay too. He's from the same general area of PA that my BIL is from, and his agent, Nancy K., went to my high school! I also loved that he used knits in his PR1 collection, as I'm a knitter. Man, if he came out with some cool knitting patterns of his styles, man, he'd make a TON of money from that! (And you can pass that along to him, just give me credit for the idea. ;-))

My fantasy PR party has Jay, Allyson, Kane, Austin, Elisa, Chris, Christian, Kit and Uli and perhaps Santino or perhaps not--depending on whether his demons are roosting.

Yes,Yes, Yes, I remember Mystery Science Theater 3000-dear to my heart for all of the hilarious, snarky takes on truly awful sci-fi movies.

yes, we need TLo, Jay, Uncle Nick and Laura to dish on PR4!

OMG! I totally forgot Daniel and Laura!!!!

HOLY SHIT!!!!!

I am so frickin' jealous that I want to spit.

Damn you, TLo. Damn you all to hell.

But I'm glad you shared, and thanks for the awesome blog. You make my dark little corner of the world a little brighter!

Oh, forgot to add: I love Jay Carroll. He was FIERCE before Christian could even spell the word.

What fun! I love Jay and I really tend to agree with a lot of his comments in his recaps!

People are asking about the holding cell video. It's at the top of this blog on the main page on the right.

The video is there with the caption,
"Catch the designers in the very tense waiting room as the judges make their decisions."

Also, yes, I think Kit had had a few in her exit video. I don't blame her but she certainly seems mellow.

I'm so jealous.

I still think Jay is so fashion forward and ahead of the curve and a freakin' genius.

Makes me wonder when Project Runway will gather up all the previous winners and runner-ups for a "design off". Wouldn't that be fabulous?

omg!!!! ask him wut song he used for his final collection!!!! plz!! you live so close to him!!!
