Go Team SissyFierce!

Thursday, January 17, 2008 by
Darlings, when it came down to the wire and it was the Bitches vs. the ... well, the Bitches, we couldn't help but cheer a little bit when the penis'd bitches won. It's all about the identity politics with us.

This:

Is so breathtaking that we have not the words. Seriously.

This:

Is yet another '80s secretary look.

Quick question: Which look won them the challenge?

Another one: And which team member's aesthetic was most responsible for that winning look? Exactly.

Once again, our Sissy gets shafted.

Oh, it wasn't a deliberate thing and we're certainly not saying Christian didn't deserve the credit, but one look at Chris' portfolio and you can see who had the greater influence in producing such an over-the-top look.

One thing that really surprised us was just how well these two got along. When Tim announced each team, we groaned at every matchup, including this one. We just assumed the age difference and the competing styles of bitchery (Chris' more passive, laid back, subtle bitchery vs. Christian's me-me-me, hyperactive hamster-on-meth version) would naturally lead to fireworks. We were happy to discover that we were totally wrong and these two worked like a dream.

The avant garde look is truly amazing. We can't argue with the judges' decision at all. As we indicated, we think Chris had the most to do with this look's success but we can still see the Christian influence.

The sheer over-the-top dragitude of it all was clearly Chris' contribution, but the pleating and the ruffles certainly have that Christian feel to them.

Our only complaint is the lack of color. Actually, that's not so much a complaint (because the color they chose does work) as it is a wish. We think this just screams for more of it. Then again, that might have pushed it too far into the drag-queen-on-a-float arena.

This, on the other hand...

Not so much.

Lorenzo absolutely hates this look but Tom thinks it could have worked with a little editing. In terms of interpreting the avant garde look to ready-to-wear, the top almost works. Although it is a little sloppy-looking.

Honestly, what throws the whole look off is the ugly-ass skirt and belt. And that's...pretty much all we have to say about this outfit.

It's funny, the avant garde look is so stunning that we have trouble coming up with things to say about it and the ready-to-wear look is so dull that we have exactly the same problem.

One thing we can all agree on: Christian's outfit is ridiculous. Was he going figure-skating after this?

Chris ROCKS!

I must say my absolute favorite character this season is Christian! I'm not claiming he's the best designer. However, I am stealing his description of himself, and will now refer to myself (among friends) as
"ferosh."

Yes, read the "Burning Questions" blogs on the Bravo website. The AG dress was 95% Christian. Chris contributed the collar. You can so see Christian in the RTW dress well. For good or bad, he took leadership, had the vision, and got the win.

I loved the trenchcoat, which was in this case (according to the blogs) mainly Victorya's idea. The RTW piece tied in nicely with the fabrics but not so much the design.

And Kit, not bitter? Oh no. See here: http://video.bravotv.com/player/?fid=29829#videoid=205517

Edit: make the "the RTW dress AS well". Thanks..

I just loved Chris/Christian's gown. I was really stunned by it. It reminded me of a gown I saw a picture of years ago, on a runway somewhere. At the time, I didn't understand couture, so I thought, "How silly," but the guys really pushed the envelope of fashion with that gown last night.
V&J created a beautiful coat, but, really, I have seen pics of similar stuff on the runway recently. The guys' gown, I just can't get over it, I don't have the words to describe its effect. They truly created something that everyone who saw it will remember forever. And how cool amazing is that? I would like to see the episode again, because I think the judges were totally blown away by the gown - I think I actually saw Nina smile!! Miracle!!

Anonymous said...

>>>Kit is also one of the "cool kids" who won't hang out with Chris, according to Jack. I find it somewhat impossible to believe that Christian sewed everything himself while Chris only worked on the wing.<<<<

Will you believe it if you see it with your own eyes? Go here... http://www.tresemme.com/project-runway/challenge/photos.aspx and page through the behind the scene pics. You'll see Christian sewing the dress in various stages, and Chris working on the collar along with some sort of harness to hold it in place. Two great looks that look great together, but it's clear Christian's primary contribution was the main garment, and Chris's primary contribution was the elaborate collar piece.

OK PRGayBoys, we need Team Fierce/Team SissyFierce shirts ASAP! Make it work!

Their Avant Garde piece was truly stunning.

I keep getting a Chris Kattan read from Princess Puffysleeves. Kattan did those SNL skits in which he played a hyperactive monkey who crazily gobbled and spat apples everywhere. I can see Christian doing that.

Beth said...

Pissed me off on an already shitty day. Really it was the COMPLETE worst. This is getting really tiring and I don't know if I can ever watch with enthuasim again.

Anne said...

Right, but without the collar piece it would have been just a dress from the closing number of "Gigi." You can't discount the importance of that collar.

Anonymous said...

I don't think anyone is discounting the importance of the collar. The collar is fantastic. But the collar also would have looked damn silly coming down the runway without Christian's organza explosion of a dress. And Christian was the one who was originally getting discounted as inconsequential in the design, quite unfairly.

Whats up with that stomach cramp couture pose? It looks absolutely contorted and painful.

I wonder if by the last few episodes when Tim says "Designers gather 'round, I have a special announcement" if it triggers like epileptic fits or something?

I heart Chris March and almost want another kid just so I can name it after him. Well, not really but I DO love him.

And I LOVE how Jay calls Christian Chicken Lady. Nail on the head.

Suzanne said...

By the way we can vote UP TO FORTY TIMES for Chris....I mean whomever you choose....for fan favorite on Bravo.com so they can win 10K!

Just sayin'

Are there photos of the Tresemme photo shoot somewhere? I think someone mentioned a photo, but I can't find it on this blog or PR's.

Anonymous said...

This has probably already been said, but since I'm not reading 200+ comments...

I disagree with you guys that Chris got shafted. It was definitely Christian who came up with the idea to use thousands of circles and ruffles.

Last night I was soooooo mad--
because Ricky was still here--
is this Mediocre Project Runway?

But now I have mellowed-- because of all of the great perspectives that I have heard here.

I love C & C Fierce Factory-- I hope that Alex! can draw them dancing!! Maybe an animation?

VJ's outfits were exactly what Michael said--something that lots of women would want to wear.
I know that I do!!

Anonymous said...

The boys seem to be acknowledging that Christian was responsible for the ruffles but they also seem to be saying that the over the top quality of the collar is what ultimately gave them the win. You can disagree but they don't seem to be trying to take anything away from Christian.

I loved the pairing of Chris Squared. (That's what I called them last night..) They are my two favorite designers and it was sheer joy.

Hi all,

Enjoyed reading all the comments, couldn't get here until late in the day. My word, you all have been busy.

I'd like to open with: I love my 'chester cheetah' (a.k.a. Chris) with his bold animal print overshirt. There's a certain bravado about a bear-sized man choosing to sport a 'fast cat' print. I consider it Bear's version of Christian's funked-up-spika-Do.

SissyBear, imho, needs a pair of Andy Warhol-esque glasses...no prescription needed...just attitude (!)
Lil' Chris rocks the glasses (and probably unbeknownst to him, rocks Warhol's spikey-do as well) I hope he ages better than the example...just got a vision of Christian at 55-60 years. old. (i.e. Lagerfield and his
fingerless gloves on a photo-shoot with the Posh of 2048 AD....ooo~~, it's either fierce or cringingly awkward)

I believe this is a case of mentor and student bringing skills to the table and bouncing off each other....beautifully.

Honestly, it's what artists crave....the perfect challenge and a partner that picks up your slack.

I applaud them both.

(wish~~ that Chris had immunity too...but frankly, he's already been resurrected from "The Runway Dead" so anything that he accomplishes from this point forward borders on the supernatural...and I hope he BRINGS
IT)

Nicely done boys!

From the1940-50's, I think....very French Couture, probably Osteoporosis of the exceedingly rich. I have a stack of Vintage Vogue mags from that era and it was all the rage....why it still conveys meaning today? eh...why have Avant Garde at all? (art, perhaps)

p.s. #2 I had this great link for Granny Clampett in a Christian-esque poof-ness...but I can't get it to link...sigh.

Re: the ready to wear look - I could swear that when Tim came into the workroom, that blouse on the dressmaker's dummy had sleeves.

It did; it had ruffly cap sleeves like the a-g gown. Chris or Christian's "burning questions" blog at Bravo says they listened to Tim and made a few changes in the r-t-w. One of them was getting rid of the sleeves.

i was so glad to see team fierce walk off with the win last night. that garment was incredible! everything about it simply exceeded the challenge.

from the design, to construction, to the way they melded their talents as a team. you just could not ask for anything better. except maybe a little more credit thrown in chris's direction. but it seemed that even nina suspected chris had a strong influence on the final result.

the everyday look was fine, too. christian's signature ruffle button-down blouse worked for this set, since it echoed the ruffled column dress. but it's getting a bit overplayed. if rami can get shit about his endless draping, then christian deserves to be told to put a stop to the ruffle shirts.

regardless, i'm thrilled with last night's win. the boys truly earned it. this dress will go down in PR history.

Maybe the boys were trying to say that the Chris collar rigging got Team Fierce the win. But it reads more like avant-garde garment=Chris, RTW garment=Christian, which is absolutely taking something away from Christian. The skirt of the avant-garde garment is beautifully crafted and in my opinion the most stunning aspect of the piece, and that was Christian's work.

Both designers deserved to be celebrated here for the avant-garde look, not just Chris. And Christian earned his immunity. Chris should have gotten immunity along with Christian, but not instead of Christian.

GothamTomato, I LOVE your musings about the outcome of same challenge/different teams.

I'd love to see that as a two-part challenge (with two auf-ings at the end of it all). Or would it ultimately be a borefest?

Question for you: in what way do you see Rami as the S4 Austin?

I liked the avant garde dress, though I immediately thought of this Chanel Couture dress that Nicole Kidman wore to the Oscars (I think?) in 2002:
http://z.about.com/d/fashion/1/5/r/u/74th_57_28.jpg

which of course made me think: what would this dress look like without the off center sounding board/collar/head piece?

I still think it kicked the crap out of the prairie hoop dress, though I wanted Ricky to leave over that one because I'm getting tired of his piranha face.

... If I had to nitpick, I'd say the color was a bit too Miss Haversham for me (I'd have gone with something a shade lighter or darker) and the vertical pleating on the bodice (which is Christian's signature look) seems wrong for the horizontal look of this dress.

There's nothing original about Christian's designs. His work is derivative of so many well established designers, like Alexander McQueen, for example.

The funny thing is that Kara Saun was criticized for doing a collection that was quite similar to Gucci's aesthetic. Alexandra Vidal was auf'd for doing a "Missoni" swimsuit.

The RTW look for this challenge is an exact copy of YSL SS 06. See picture here.

Anonymous said...

I forgot to mention that Alexandra Vidal was also criticized for getting inspired by some previous Michael Kors' collection/swimsuit.

Okay, Stubenville. Want something new to chew over? Bravo has posted a bonus clip of the designers waiting for judging in the holding cell. Miss Kit seems to think Chris should have gone home for this challenge. Rami blames his position on Sweet Pea.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

You could argue back and forth about this forever.

This gown was the the result of great *teamwork*. Period. Christian's concept for the gown, and ability to put it together in such short order, was impressive, and Chris' ability to visualize and execute the conceptual collar definitely pushed the gown into the avante garde territory where they needed to go for the challenge.

Christian might not have won without that collar, and I'm not sure that he could have made that crucial part of the design actually happen.

Chris, on the other hand, probably *could* have pulled off something extremely interesting by himself, but who knows.

I think they dropped the ball with the ready to wear skirt, but they still deserved the win.

The model's pose harkens back to the days when models were simply rack-size manaquins who posed in ways to show the clothing to its best advantage.

Anonymous said...

I liked seeing Chris being so gracious and letting Christian bask in the glow of the win, when it's pretty clear from watching that the lion's share of that avant garde look came from Chris.

Loved how well they worked together. They were hilarious, too.

And Rami needs to pull that stick out of his ass and learn how to play well with others. And quit doing the toga thing on every damn dress.

GothamTomato said...

"Question for you: in what way do you see Rami as the S4 Austin?"

I see Rami as like Austin in the way he approaches the challenges: He has a vision that, while marketable, is narrow and works to his detriment in these challenges. It remains to be seen if Rami's unwillingness to go outside his box keeps him out of the finals.

TV-personailywise, of course, they are nothing alike. Austin was competely loveable, adorable & funny. Rami, not so much, but I think that at least some of that can be attributed to cultural differences. But then, Rami rocks the towel.

BTW, what's up with awarding both an ad in Elle and immunity? Usually, one or the other is considered ample reward.

This absolutely took my breath away. I was so proud of Chris. He's brought it for three challenges now, and no one can contest that he deserved to be here. I wish that he and Christian could have shared the win, but I guess giving immunity to such a high percentage of the designers would have made next week less fun.

Anyone know if Christian/Chris's winning dress comes in a size 6x? My almost 6yo daughter wants it for her wedding!!

She adores watching PR during the weekend when it repeats and giving her take on the clothing.

She asked me if "Mr. Tom and Mr. Worwenzo (Lorenzo)" would let her tell them what she thinks. Another fan for TLo!!

GothamTomato, yes, I absolutely see your 'single-minded vision' rationale for equating Rami with Austin. Good point....thanks, you threw me at first!

Hahahahaha!

You can clearly see the influence of both of them in this look, though you are right that the construction of that amazing collar thing is all Chris!

I feel like I am watching a whole different series than some of you. REally, some posters are going on about how Ricky and Sweet P have yet to send something decent and finished down the runway. Its one thing to say they (or anyone else) has sent nothing down a person likes- that is subjective and to each their own. But finished and well done and fit is another matter.

Ricky's first dress was well fit, well sewn and the way he worked with the fabric was lovely. It was a basic design, but so was V-ya's, and the judges practically wet themselves over her sack dress. Sweet Pea's sweater dress was quite nice and well finished, and they both turned out decent looks in the makeover challenge that fit and were finished. Sweet pea's prom dress was pretty and Ricky's was blah because of the color but the bust was flattering and the bubble hem was no worse than V-ya's. Swet Pea did a great job with Elisa on the Bitten challenge and Ricky and Jack turned a pretty red party dress. Both were well finished and constructed. Ricky dropped the ball on the team challenge with V-ya and Elisa and they both had problems with Tiki's menswear challenge. HOWEVER, Ricky's outfit, had it been hemmed, would have been what Tiki asked for. It was basically conservative, but had a bt of color on the shirt, a gorgeous lining and pocket square, and it fit well and a sane crotch (if I can say that about a crotch). Sweet Pea knew that her look was a nice, made no excuses and embraced that crazy look in how she the salon style her smoking male model.

Neither of them are my favorite designers. I don't mind either of them on a personal level. But I'm thinking about their work and frankly, it isn't the mess that people keep saying it. Sure, they put some similar silhouettes or looks out, but so did Laura (3), Uli (3), Austin (1),as does V-ya now. I guess I just don't get the ugly level of vicious and often personal hate directed at these 2 designers.

Please return to your regularly scheduled slam-fest.

Anonymous said...

That should be Sweet Pea knew her men's wear was a nice pile of mess... Yips!

Anonymous said...

The "couture" pose was wrong for this dress. A haughty, regal pose makes more sense.

"Couture" poses are best for things like tank style dresses or frankly, print, not runway.

I thought Rami should have lost this challenge. His dress was not avant-garde. The hoop skirt was more outrageous than his outfit.

Anonymous said...

I know we're not there yet, but did anyone else notice that Jillian's coatlooks an awful lot like the one she made for the pre-season fashion show with mini-collections from all the designers? I was just looking back at the pictures from that and it's very similar, just in a more boring color...

Anonymous said...

Naaaa .... "outrageous" does not mean avante-garde. In this case in was a ugly mess. Rami's look was fashionable, and at the very least, gorgeous.

... honestly, I think it looks better than what team sissy-fierce's actually put on the runway, and since this is in the f21 section and not the 12X12, it doesn't have any delusions about eing couture or "expensive", ha.

Fabulous dress! As soon as the judges said, "It's couture", I knew they'd nailed it.

And they were a fab team too! I suspect Chris's even, good-humoured style helped balance out Christian's "little shit" personality. Whatever it was, they did a wonderful job. That dress was...

Not so crazy about the RTW piece (the skirt was poorly done too), but it beat Ricky's Reitmans dress AND was about even with Vic and Jillian's little black dress. The only really good RTW piece was Sweet P's.
