Santa Gunn

Monday, December 10, 2007 by
As you know, yesterday was the day Tim Gunn made his appearance at Emmett McCarthy's store EMc2 to sign bobbleheads, greet his legion of fans and to just be Tim Gunn (believe us, that's enough).

Emmett had set up a large white tent in the courtyard behind his store ("It's my own little Bryant Park!") and when we arrived to help with the setup, he and his Brand Director, Dimitry Chamy, had just hung the wreaths and the EMc2 logo. We immediately began criticizing. Hey. It's what we do. "No, no, no. Those gold bows look awful. You should use silver and blue, like the EMc2 colors! Get out of the way, we'll do it."

We're only half-kidding. Anyway, we wrapped fake presents and put EMc2 ribbons on the wreaths (because that's truly the meaning of Christmas: corporate branding), sprinkled some styrofoam snow all over everything and stepped back to admire how fabulous we are. Emmett and Dimitry must have done something during all this, but we were too busy loving ourselves to notice.

Anyway, Emmett's little gay Santa's village came out looking wonderful. All it needed was gay Santa himself. Tim arrived at 1 on the dot and proceeded to apologize profusely for not getting there earlier. We have to say, we fell a little in love with Tim all over again yesterday. It's not that we ever fell OUT of love with Tim; it's just that we see so little of him on Project Runway and we felt that his own show (sorry Tim!) didn't showcase his personality and talents as well as it should have. Seeing him yesterday, we got the full-on Gunn experience: warm, funny, ebullient (It's Tim. We have to use at least ONE 2-dollar word to describe him.), a little dishy, a little bitchy, and yet always, ALWAYS completely gracious to his fans.

And what fans. Butcher, baker, candlestick maker; you name a type of person and they were there yesterday. From the young women, stylishly dressed to impress him, to the older women who see in him a peer, someone who has life experiences and the opinions that come with them, to the gay teenagers who giggled nervously, to the middle-aged queens (who also giggled nervously) to the little kids who looked up at him in awe as he signed their books and bobbleheads, to the straight men, who all - to a man - claimed they were buying the bobbleheads for their wives. Tim greeted them all with equal warmth, listened to their stories, asked questions, and signed, signed, signed away.

We were Santa's Little Helpers yesterday, so we got to witness each brief conversation as we stood behind Tim, directing the line and boxing and unboxing bobbleheads to be signed and we can tell you, he never showed anything less than complete interest in each and every person that came up to him. Even better, whenever there was a lull in the crowd (which wasn't often) we got treated to the MOST DELICIOUS dish from the man. Unfortunately, we promised him that we would never reveal any of it until, and we quote "all the principals are dead and gone." Sorry, bitches. That's just one of the perks of being a PRGayBoy.

We also got to hear his impressions of all the designers this season. But because he's Tim, he was typically diplomatic. He said he loves "All of them...[pause]...most of them." when asked to elaborate, he declined. One thing that just thrilled us: we were talking about Elisa when he said "I agree with what you boys said about her first dress." And then proceeded to quote the post back to us! We don't know what made us happier, that he agreed with our opinion or that he reads our blog closely enough to remember what we said weeks later.

Which reminds us, we were busy working the crowd when what to our wondering eyes should appear but Jack Mackenroth, looking none the worse for wear. "I know who you bitches are!" he said as we went up to introduce ourselves. "It's your turn now, bitches. You're always criticizing us, so let me see what you're wearing. Hmmm." It must have passed muster because he didn't have anything bad to say about our outfits, but he immediately wanted to set the record straight about something. "We DID use pleather on those outfits. You just couldn't see it." We love that these bitches read us.

Jack was typically fun and bitchy and gay, posing for pictures with everyone. Not long after Jack arrived, Kevin and Christian showed up. Lemme tell ya, it's still weird to us when we meet the designers and they know who we are on sight. Kevin waved at us from across the room but Christian was too busy being a SUPERSTAR and working the crowd to pay us much attention. Kevin is much friendlier and laid back than he appears on the show. Christian is a legend in his own mind and you really could carry him around in a totebag. They posed with Tim and as multiple flashes went off, Christian turned to the others and said loudly "You're supposed to change your pose with each picture! Don't you know anything?"

To wrap it up (pun intended), we had a fantastic time yesterday and as much fun as it was to stand by Tim's side all day and to talk to some of the designers, it was equally as wonderful to meet the people who came up to us and introduce themselves as fans. To everyone we met and spoke to yesterday, we cannot thank you enough for your kind words and support.

By the way, Emmett tells us that there are more than a hundred autographed bobbleheads available for purchase, so if you want a little piece of the Gunn, head over to EMc2 and snap one up.

For more coverage of yesterday's fabulosity, check out BPR.

You got to hand out with Jack - BEEOTCHES. He sounds like a really fun guy. I'm glad you homos had a good time. Thanx.

Dearest T& L -

It was so fabulous to meet you yesterday, and I'm going on the record for the blog here: you're even handsomer in person than your photos suggest, and they're darn good. And charming, witty, intelligent? Check, check, check, and you both worked tirelessly but unobtrusively to help make the event run smoothly for one and all.

Grand time had by everyone wise enough to attend, and Sir/St./Santa Tim was gracious, relaxed, gorgeous and magnetic. Just like you two. Loved meeting that long drink of champagne, Emmett, who's a very astute and engaged businessman as well as an excellent event-giver and talented designer.

Sent my pix of me with you two and with Tim to my sister, and she was as thrilled, vicariously, as I had been.

You-all were a Christmas gift received early. Holly jolly, indeed!

xo & all the best,

NDC

Family obligations didn't permit me to be there yesterday, but I was there in spirit! Glad you all had a fab time. Love the pics!

Just to prove that I truly am embracing the holiday spirit, I have turned Grinch-green with envy.

I was lucky enough to be there yesterday too, and when I saw Jack, I did take the opportunity to ask him, 'who's idea was it to carry Christian around in the bag?'

He said it was his and he carried him around 'way more than they showed'. He said he thought he was so tiny, he could carry him around, so he did. (And he IS tiny. If this designing thing doesn't work out, he could be on the Roumanian gymnastics team.)

When Christian walked in, myself & the two women standing next to me had the same reaction: Aw, his hair's not standing up. (Maybe he gives it Sundays off.) Ah well, maybe next time.

This was the third time I'd gotten to meet Tim, and each time I've been impressed at how genuine and gracious he is.

And just as impressive: Emmett's store. If you are in NY, and you want to see some coats to die for, run, run, run as fast as you can down to Elizabeth Street. His line of coats is absolutely gorgeous! Like butter.

And the PR Gay boys are too modest to mention this, but quite a few of the attendees were just as excited to meet them, as to meet Tim.

(in my very best Napoleon Dynamite voice) Luckyyyy!

Thank you, though, for such a lovely recap, boys. Your report really brightens up an otherwise dull and dreary Monday! And it's really good to hear what folks are like in reality (not reality TV).

Sssooooooooo jealous!!! Gee, what's on my plate today...laundry, dog walk, paying bills. All you needed was the fabulous Ms. Bennett (don't tell me, you dropped in for cocktails after) to complete my PR fantasy.
Love you both,

I'm so happy that you guys are having such a wonderful time this Holiday Season. It's so great to see that all your hard work making this blog doesn't go unseen. And it's kind of scary/exciting to think that the designers actually read it too.

I was just wondering though, did you happen to ask Tim how come he hasn't been as active in the current season, or has it just been that the editing is taking away all the Tim Time.

I miss you Tim!

Was Jack wearing one of Emmett's t-shirts? And are his eyes really pretty in real life? I am so jealous.

OK< I can't believe I'm doing this--but I'm going to have to order a TG bobblehead for my study. My best friend, an interior designer, will have heart palpitations but I love Mr. Gunn so much I'll violate my Armani-esque minimalism for a bit of kitsch.

I would way rather meet Tlo than Tim Gunn.
I'm glad everybody had a good time and you guys are getting recognized for all the hard work you do on this blog. Mwah!

Sounds like a terrific day. So glad you had so much fun T&L. I had a great time the last time I was at Emmett's and this sounds even more fab.

The best I did this weekend for PR fabulousness was a trip to Steve and barry's to check out Victorya's dress. Made a little purchase. Read about it on my blog

Seth, I want to say that Emmett is 6 foot 6. He's about a foot taller than I am. I'm not sure of his exact height, but that's a fair estimate. Whatever the real number, he's tall! I get a crick in my neck talking to him.

Anonymous said...

I scurried right over to Emmett's site and bought a bobblehead, but there was no indication that they were autographed by the man himself! I sure hope I got one in time.

Anyway, Thanks tons for the scooop on your fabulous day. I'm surprised Christian left the house with his hair not "done"!

Add me to the pea green crowd. Emmett should make a coat in that color for us non-eastern seaboard types to wear when you bitches are gallavanting around at these events. :-)

Is it me or does Jack's face seem more filled out than during taping? He looks absolutely scrumptious in his Gunn tee.

My gosh, Christian IS tiny. I'm 5' and I think I could tote him around with relative ease.

xoxoxo to all!

Anonymous said...

And Gotham Tomato, thanks for the thoughtful comments and for going to report on our boys! You are right, I would be equally as excited to meet TLo as any of the others. Well, okay, Tim is a total GOD so he would come first.

I will be in New York at the end of March. As soon as I land I'm going to march my ass right to Emmett's store and hope that he still has all those coats that are to die for (in my size). If I could get a signed Tim bobblehead, this Utah fruitfly would lay down and die right there. AND, if there was a Tim sighting, I would need paramedics on the spot.

I really just can't wait. Keep sending us the good stuff.

BTW Bill, a dear friend who knows I "collect" the PR clothes (Wendy Pepper BR dress, Andrae's BR dress, Angela & co.'s INC dress) sent me the Bitten dress. I LOVE IT!!! It hides all the mistakes. Hi guys!

I couldn't make it yesterday, but thanks for filling us in. I do have to make it down to Emmett's store sometime soon -- since it's only a couple of subway stops away, I really don't know why I haven't done so yet -- it's either sheer laziness or fear of falling in love with something I completely cannot afford. Maybe a little of both.

Anyway, I can only hope that Emmett does this again sometime. Emmett? Please?

I can't believe I actually said anything to him, 'cause I'm usually NOT like that. I'm definitely one fan that's even more in love with Jack after this weekend. I'm still floating about 100 feet off the ground!
