Project Runway Canada - Carlie Wong

Saturday, November 24, 2007 by

Carlie Wong talks to Metro News Canada about leaving Runway.

What was the big mistake that sent you home?
"I think that I probably was overly ambitious with what I was doing. You can never know what the judges are looking for in that particular challenge. Everything I did before that particular challenge was well done, and I think that a little mistake made them confused, and I think it was probably blown out of proportion. You never know what they’re looking for — that particular day they were looking for fit, not necessarily the worst design. I think that’s what it was."

What didn’t you get to show the judges and the audience?
"More of what I can do. I think I’m pretty diverse and I got to show an evening gown, so I’m happy about that. That’s kind of my forte. I wish I could have shown more of what I can do."

What will you always remember from your experience on PRC?
"I will always remember the people that I met and all the wonderful people there and the talent of the designers there. I would never meet these people if it weren’t for the show, and I’m grateful about that."

Good riddance! I hated that woman!!!
Bidell is a little too full of himself, isn't he? The PR Canada Angry Little Peanut.

I liked Megan's dress the best. The judges acted like it's the first time they've seen anything like it. It was gorgeous!

I love PR Canada! Lucien's dress was horrible. The model looked like she was pregnant. Iman bitch-slapping the designers? Priceless!

Biddell is an asshole!! His attitude sucked this week.

Lucian's dress was pepto bismol and in a very bad way, I didn't like the color at all. Biddell is young and inexperienced. The whole BS about rich women was really annoying. Who does he think is going to buy his dresses?

"I don't pretend to be the world's greatest sample maker. This is a competition for the next great fashion designer. It's not the next great sample sewer."

Megan does have a point and sometimes I question some of the criticism they get about that.

I liked Megan's gown. I fail to understand the criticism of the color, as it was very similar to the color of MG's, which they liked. It had good flow to it, also.

I didn't get the praise for Biddell's design, particularly looking at in again in the screen shots on PRC's website. There's way too much going on, the lines go every which way, and the pleats at the bodice are not particularly flattering. I appreciate the fact that all that pleating is difficult, but if it doesn't end up looking good, what's the point?

Stephen's was awful. The bust was off-kilter, and those two big flowers were very bizarrely placed.

Personally, I'd have voted MG's the best. I like that she made a short dress - some of us like to show off our legs at night (and not be troubled by trains, and long skirts so tight it's hard to walk). I can completely understand why it garnered the highest bid.

Lucian's dress was great. I'm glad that Iman got the point - if you take an improbable color, give it a particular cut, it can look chic. MG's dress was the best - fun and elegant. I liked the idea behind Shernett's dress, but I think it "failed" like Laura Bennett's couture gown failed: the flatness of the voluminous part didn't convey the needed drama.

And Megan's dress was truly like a grey house duster Nina Simone would wear in her twighlight years. A fair auf'ing.

I would have to disagree with Megan's statement. I think three cycles of PR-US and half a cycle of PRC have now proven that without the ability to execute a design well, a designer will NOT last long. Success really does require a mesh of the two skills.

That said, I liked the fabric on Megan's dress, didn't necessarily hate the silhouette, but the yoke looked unforgiveably amateurish.

Didn't love the tabs all over Biddell's dress, but it seemed to be the best overall creation. And I still love the raw real-ness of these competitors (and how much they don't fit neat character categories as on PR-US or Top Chef). Plus Iman. When she choked up, I choked up. Love. Her.

Lucian's dress seemed ill-fitted to his model. It's funny how he said she could make anything look great, and then the dress looks all lumpy on her. Why did no one notice how lumpy it was?
The guest judge seemed to think that difficult construction trumps design with Biddell's dress. MG's was a complex construction as well (at least the bottom half), but it also was wearable and cute. But she kinda bugs me with her cutesy, shoulder-shruggy attitude.
I didn't love Megan's dress, but Shernett's was so much worse! The greyish green sparkly skirt? How does that look like a flower stem? And how many people want to wear a white blouse to a formal affair?

Never been prouder to be on Team Biddel.

I wasn't at all surprised that Megan lost this one. The dress was pretty, but it wasn't as well made as the others, and the color embodied 'bleak', not 'hope'.

I can't wait to see what happens with Biddell next week. It looks like he may end up getting his bad-ass kicked, from his attitude.

I'd have to agree with Agnes -- if the contestants don't understand by now that they will be required to sew -- and sew well -- in order to succeed on PR, then someone hasn't been paying attention. Sure, top fashion designers don't sew their own clothes, but if you are going to try to make it to the top (or at least maybe the middle) of your profession via the PR highway, you'd better not be too good for that needle, is all I'm sayin'.

Anonymous said...

Megan's dress is the exact same design as the first clothing item I sewed when I was 13 or 14. Except I made it in batiste, embroidered the yoke, and called it a nightgown. I did like her fabric choice, though.

Anonymous said...

Is it posted somewhere how much the gowns (besides MG's) sold for?

It seemed like several of the designers had fit issues.

I loved the color of Lucian's dress. That, imo, was a "hope"-ful color.

I knew Megan was history as soon as I saw that color. It was just so drab and that collar was a mess. The silhouette wasn't as sleek as others but there is still a market out there for that. Better construction might have saved it but Megan just isn't accomplished that way.

Shernett was lucky. I liked the idea of her dress but the finished product was just depressing. I agree with Anonymous 11:56. I really wanted that collar to have more drama, and it bugged me that she couldn't make up her mind: is it a rose or a calla lily? Also, I tend to associate calla lilies with funerals.

What were those things on Stephen's dress? What woman wants big puffy things on her hips?

MG's dress was really cute. Not a fan of the color but it looked very nicely finished.

Iman. Love. Her. She is obviously so passionate about the issue and it just shows. Off to make a contribution...

What I find interesting, and surprising, about Stephen's RoseHip catastrophe is that he added them for the final runway show. They were nowhere to be seen during the initial creation or during the actual auction

Depends on the white blouse! I have a lovely sheer white chiffon blouse that I wear with black silk pants or a black taffeta skirt, and it's perfect for formal

Shernett's gown would have been great if that blouse had had a stiff white organza collar that stood up like the one Garbo wore in Love, and a better skirt (greener and longer).

I think Iman is too mean. She bullies the other judges if they don't agree with her, and I believe she enjoys bitching at the contestants.

I love PR Canada!

Mostly because I get 2x the PR as just watching the american one.

Overall I like the creations on PR canada more than the US version, but it's only 2 weeks in here. Hopefully they start hitting their stride and take a bit more risk.

Lucian's, Biddel's, and MG's dresses were all fabulous.

The others... not so much. Stephen will probably be the next to go, if not the week after.

I agree, I love Stephen - he's funny and everything - but he hasn't really produced anything interesting.

I loved MG's dress and I haven't been a fan of hers. Lucian's did make his model look terrible and I didn't get why the judges thought it was fabulous. I actually liked Shernett's - the collar could have been more dramatic but I really liked the idea and the silhouette.

Stephen's was unmemorable until he added the flowers and then it was memorably bad. Rose hips should be reserved for tea. I like her design aesthetic generally but Megan's really was the worst. Kendra's I can't even remember and Biddell's seemed like too much dress.

Iman is just plain rude with the other judges. If I was the guy from Bustle, I'd have ripped her a new one. Iman obviously isn't used to people disagreeing with her. Poor David Bowie.

Sarcastic much, girls? :-)

Do Canadian reality shows have the 3rd place bitch edit? That's Biddell's to lose, though given the time constraints, his dress was amazing. They also need to keep him for his little spats with Lucian. That's about the only drama left.

That said, I liked MG's the best; it should have won. Lucian's? Okay, but probably worn by Cate Blanchett at some awards show 5 years ago (but not in pink).

Unless one of them has a total clunker, I don't see Stephen, Kendra or Shernell grabbing one of those F3 spots.

Great episode for a

Haven't been a fan of Bidell up to this point and his attitude drives me crazy, BUT I have to say I thought his dress was gorgeous. Likewise, I find M-G to be more than a little bit annoying, but her dress was definitely among the top two in my book, too. I was pretty sure it was her dress that got the highest bid--it just struck me as the sort of dress someone would fall in love with and have to have.

I've loved Lucian up to this point, but I really didn't like his dress this week...couldn't understand why Iman loved it so much. I also thought it made the model look heavier than she is.

I've kind of like Megan as an underdog, but even I thought it was time for her to go this week. I would've put Stephen in the bottom two, though, rather than Shernett. Those flowers on his dress were ridiculous.

Aw. I liked Megan's design sensibility. It's a shame she couldn't sew worth a damn and cried through the first four challenges.

Wouldn't it be funny to find Biddell specializing in socialite ballgowns five years from now?

Hey T Lo, this is actually Episode 7, not 6! Just FYI.

Iman scares me. I agree that her bullying of the other judges when they don't agree with her is annoying. Isn't that the point of having several judges? To get lots of opinions?

I thought Bidell's dress was gorgeous, but MG's dress is the one I would want to wear myself because it was so fun and flirty!

If Carlie designed the dress she's wearing in that photo, she should start selling it the way Kara did her kimono dress. It's a great silhouette, especially for a plus-sized woman.

Everybody kept saying how good PR Canada was, so I watched all the episodes this weekend and I was very impressed with the designers and challenges, although I have to say that I thought Iman was very rude to the other judges.

Anonymous said...

Iman didn't mean to be rude to Judge Shawn, she just hated his shirt!

Here's my prediction on how it's going to go...

The next eliminated should be Shernett... she's long overdue since Marie Genevieve was eliminated in the opera challenge.

Then after that, I'd think Stephen would be eliminated (sadly, he's my favorite personality left).

Marie Genevieve, though a great designer, shouldn't make the final three since she was eliminated earlier.

This leaves Kendra, Biddell, and Lucian in the final three. And I predict Lucian will be the winner.

So far, I am liking PR Canada more than PR4. The designers are better, story lines, too. The editing is far superior to seasons of American PR - we see more of the design process and each designer gets more camera time.

And then there's the one and only, the terrifying ... Iman. She's over the top. I'm waiting for somebody to really give it to her.

P.S. - Thank you again, MsRoyalT

lima bean, I'm in total agreement. I haven't been watching PR Canada regularly--I've seen only one and a half episodes (the second half of the opera-diva throwdown and then this one)--but I actually think it's a better show than the American version, precisely because we get to see more of what's behind the scenes. The producers don't seem to be so anxious to drum up conflict just to make the show fit in with the reality-series model. I'd rather watch the creativity and the pressure and the models being fitted and such than a bunch of sleep-deprived people ragging on each other for an hour (though that can be entertaining in small doses).

I've managed to hook two more people on PR Canada based on Iman's HeatMiser smack-down alone. I heart her.

That said, I didn't like any of the gowns. Meagan's gown WAS showing the "volume trend" that is oh, so hot (Hi, SJP!) and that color has just been popping up all over (Hi, SJP!), but bleh. Biddell's was weirdly fussy and totally eliminated his model's boobs.

The judges on this show are from where ? Elle Canada, circulation 12,000 ? Shawn Who ? The guys website hasn't been updated since 04 !!

Wayne Clark HMmmmmmmmm Names sounds familair.Did he play hockey?

Iman must be enjoying her gig working with these gems. The guy with the bad haircut is gonna get his nuts chopped off if he clashes with Iman once more.

I am totally enamored with Iman. She is a goddess. She has strong opinions and a strong personality. The other judge are equally strong in their opinion so why should Iman pretend to be demure?

Anonymous said...

I dunno, is Shawn Hewson really that good or famous to be one of the judges? I got a feeling Lucian Matis is more famous than him in Canada as a designer even before the show shown.

If thats the case i wont blame Iman for disagreeing with him everytime.
