Laura Bennett's Perfect Black Dress

Wednesday, September 26, 2007 by
A lot of people have been asking us about the dress Laura gave to the client on Tim Gunn's show last week. We asked her for some info and pictures. The dress will be available soon, kittens, whether through QVC or some other venue. Worry not, you'll be the first to know where to get it. The proceeds for this dress will be donated to Laura's pet cause, Dress for Success and you'll be able to either buy it for yourself or have it sent through DFS to a woman who needs it.

Take it away, Laura!

"I love the ease of wearing dresses. There is nothing simpler than slipping on that one easy piece. I always feel fabulous, confident and put together when I am wearing a flattering, comfortable dress.

My basic dress is flattering for all body types. The subtle A-Line shape provides ease of movement so it is never binding or uncomfortable. It has a V neckline, which looks great on everyone: cut low enough to be feminine, but high enough to wear with a bra. The front is gathered just below the bust, providing a beautiful drape and doing wonders to hide a little tummy.

Women my age love arm coverage. Dresses with sleeves are surprisingly hard to find. This one comes in both a long and short sleeve version for those of us that no longer have stick thin arms. The long sleeve version has a generous sleeve length that gently gathers at the wrist. The short sleeve version is a sophisticated length that comes just above the elbow.

My dress is made out of a beautiful matte finish jersey. Unlike the shiny polyester jersey dresses of the past, the matte finish of this fabric is elegant and modern. The care of this dress couldn’t be easier. Just machine-wash and hang to dry. The fabric resists wrinkling which makes it perfect for travel. The carefully considered fabric weight is perfect year round. Most importantly, there is nothing better than stretch fabric for ease of movement to comfortably get you through another busy, hectic day.

This dress is actually two dresses sewn together. The double fabric allows it to drape beautifully without clinging or riding up. It also helps to hide any lines from undergarments, so the look is always smooth and sleek. The addition of the second layer gives the dress a luxurious weight that hangs just right. Plus, there are no bulky seams. The seams are carefully placed for flattery and comfort and the side seams are slightly toward the back for the slimmest possible silhouette.

Although this dress was thought out and developed by me over many years, it is deceptively simple. You can take this dress from casual to dressy or from the office to a night out, just by changing your accessories. This is truly the perfect little dress."

UPDATE:
The pictured photo is Laura's personal dress and the actual neckline is not that low. The real one is bra-friendly. It should be available for just under $100.

Brilliant!

There HAS to be a place in the industry for someone as aware, thoughtful and creative as Ms. Bennett.

Stunning. And machine washable, too - oh my! That dress is mine as soon as it's available. And since I love the idea of donating to Dress for Success, if it's not too expensive maybe I'll buy one to donate as well.

And I couldn't agree more about the ease of "one easy piece."

I love it. But it looks very low cut. Would love to see it on a model! Yay Laura.

OMG, I need this dress NOW. PLEASE tell me it'll be available soon. Absolutely love all the thought behind the design. But, Laura, NEED IT NOW!

OHMYGOD I love this woman!! Just reading her explanation about the dress made my day. My sister called me right after they showed this dress on the show. She loved it!
Thank you, boys!

It's a gorgeous dress. Laura will go far as a designer. I can't wait to see her whole line.

On what planet is that neckline high enough to wear a bra with? It looks like it's cut down to the waist from where I'm sitting!

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately I'm the exception to this rule - can't wear it but wish I could. A neckline like this will reveal all that I wish to hide.

Anonymous said...

I guess I have to be the tacky one and ask, how much is it going to cost? Or can you get it for me wholesale?

Anonymous said...

I agree that for anyone who isn't an A cup you'll probably need to wear a camisole with this. I do wear a lot of dresses, because they are easy, can be dressed up or down, and the jersey ones pack really well. And it seems like I need to wear a cami with just about every dress I've bought over the last couple of years. Slightly annoying at times but ultimately not a big deal.

OK, I like wearing dresses on occasion, and I LOVE this dress--but I disagree with Laura's comment, "I love the ease of wearing dresses. There is nothing simpler than slipping on that one easy piece." A dress means stockings and shoes (or at the very least &%@*$ shaving your legs); to me, it's far easier to slip on pants and a top.

But if I can afford it, I'll buy it. I've had the same little black dress for ages--it could stand to be retired.

Brandenburg3rd said...

On the neckline--maybe that's what Nicole had altered?

I know that's what I'm going to have to take a needle and thread to; Tim's admonition, "But you don't want them falling out on the table!" springs to mind.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the comments about the neckline appearing to be lower cut than described...otherwise, fabulous!

Anonymous said...

I can't wait to buy it. I'll have it altered if needed. No big deal. It's the perfect black dress.

Anonymous said...

Re: a dress means stocking and shoes.....

What, you don't wear shoes with pants? And in NYC nobody wears stockings unless it's the dead of winter - and maybe not even then. Tights are an exception.

I do find dresses the easiest things to wear, at least for about 6 or 7 months of the year.

Love the look with the belt, and what a good idea to suggest a way to accessorize this dress.

You can have a sparkling broche decorating the plunging neckline. It would look GORGEOUS!

It looks gorgeous with the belt. I am so buying one.

I have to agree with Laura...I love the ease of wearing a dress. I'm wearing one right now.

One other benefit that Laura didn't mention is that a dress shows off your legs. And your shoes. :-)

How long are the season 3 designers under contract to Bravo and the Weinstein Co. after their season is over? Is it more than 1 year? Is this why it is smarter to wait until your contract with them has run out before introducing anything major because you will be giving alot of the money you make to Weinstein?

It's a classic piece that no matter what the "in-style" fashion maybe this little black dress will never be out of style.

My mind has shifted. LBD now refers to Laura Bennett Dress. I appreciated reading her rationale and seeing the dress.

I love how practical Laura is in her discussion of the dress. It contrasts nicely with how elegant the dress itself is. That's my kinda gal: pragmatic and chic!
In addition to the colors "ordered" above, I'll take one in forest green and burgundy (the other neutrals, according to Clinton and Stacy)!
This would be great with knee-high boots.

Excuse me, but I have breasts. There is no way anyone above an A cup could wear that dress with that low-cut neckline. I don't even see how a normal bra would not show with that low of a neckline. I love the style and ease of that dress, but women with busts will shy away from it and not buy it. C'mon Laura, think of women with actual breasts next time.

You can't layer this over a lacy camisole or fill in the neckline with a colorful scarf?

I (and my 36DDD's) actually prefer it this low so that I have the option to shoot a little color into this. Black is a little hard against my skin, but I do love the idea of a black dress. Anybody who has had big tits knows how to get around the "gotta wear a bra" dilhema.

It is perfect! I'm a big fan of the little black dress - no woman can have too many. But this is better than any I have. I love the fact that it's machine washable and travels well. And at the price suggested, I just may buy two.

Min is right here: One other benefit that Laura didn't mention is that a dress shows off your legs.

My legs are my best feature, and I love showing them off! (Even at my age, which I'm not telling. ~smile~)

She's gonna make a mint on that thing. It would flatter anyone. Why don't people get this concept?

Machine washable - Magic words for a mother of four. I love your designs, Laura! I cannot wait to have my own Laura Bennett dress.

Anonymous said...

I adore it! And, BTW, NO ONE wears hose around these parts unless mandated by their work environment or weather. Thank heaven those days are over!

Anonymous said...

I'd like to see it in some brighter colors - I'd buy it in sapphire or cobalt blue as well as in a nice neutral red. You know, not fire engine, not tomato... But I'd also buy it in a coral and hunter green.

The thing is, it's nice-looking without being memorable (I mean that in a good way) so you could space it out and wear three different colors over two weeks and nobody'd be going, "How many of those things does she *have* in her closet anyway?!?!"

gigi: And, BTW, NO ONE wears hose around these parts unless mandated by their work environment or weather.

Well, I wear them, and most of the women in my profession wear them. Not only do hose look more polished, they also smooth out the skin tone on my legs. Plus, wearing hose is a lot easier on my shoes than going without them.

One more thing: I think Laura would do VERY well in a chain like Target. Here me out before anyone gets touchy. Target has a LOYAL following of women on budgets who like to dress smart. I love the Isaac Miz line and Merona. Lots of well name designers have passed through as well. Laura has that classic understated chic thing down and I think her clothes would fly off the shelves. I CERTAINLY would buy a line of clothes, shoes and accessories from LB in Target. And she could still have her higher end evening wear line. I think we should start an e-mail campaign to let Target know that their clients want LB designs in their store. I see a lucrative deal in Laura's future! What do y'all think?

This dress is lovely, and wearable and would look great and many different colors. As a home SEWIST, I and many other home sewists would love to see a line of LB patterns. Her garments are classy and actually designed to be worn rather than impractical creations, based on a pretty sketch, with no place to go.

Ladies, wear stockings!! They do even out skin tone, minimize blemishes, protect your shoes, make your legs prettier (like make-up), and help maintain circulation in your legs if you wear the right kind. I don't know where this lazy, no stockings trend came from, but it looks terrible.

Hmmm...I wish I could see the length! I'm wondering if it will work with boots. And, does the belt come with??

Funny thing, that...Here where I live, the local Who's Who types are frequently glimpsed shopping at Target and even Walmart....they just travel across town to do it in the hopes that nobody recognizes them. ;o)

Hooray! I join the other soldiers of fabulosity in loving this dress, and thank you, Laura, for the sleeves. I'm at an age where I just don't feel comfortable with my arms exposed, yet almost all the LBDs out there are sleeveless sheaths.

I just bought one in cashmere because I was so desperate, but in truth I can only wear it in the winter. Laura's is more versatile and much more reasonably priced.

Did I miss where it said the dress would come in other colors too? Everyone's mentioning such gorgeous alternatives that black might not be the only color I buy.

So, new meaning for LBD -- Laura Bennett Dress!

Hope Laurie

p.s. It's especially nice of Laura to think of arms because the infamous Emmy dress top showed hers to be spectacular.

Anonymous said...

That is a seriously superb dress. I'm with the many other commenters here who want it in as many colors as you choose to produce, in addition to the always correct NY Black.

Ms. Bennett, I would SO LOVE to represent you in your IP matters! While that is an unregenerate rave, it also is a serious professional desire and goal of mine. If only, if only....

You have created a wonderfully marketable garment here, and the ways that it can be personalized with belts, jewelry, scarves, means that it won't be a uniform "uniform."

Best wishes for much success with this design and many to come, Ms. Bennett.

And thanks, T&L, for providing such delicious backstory about this creation.

All the best,

NDC

I'm sorry, but I feel the need to speak up about a few of the comments here.

There's no way women bigger than an A cup can wear that dress as is?

Bitch, watch me. Since when do we dictate to women what they can and can't wear based on their body type? I thought fashion was about what made me people look good and feel fabulous. Suit yourself with your turtle necks and crew collars, mi amor, but you are hiding your headlights under a bushel. As for me, my 36DDD's like to breathe and I don't hear any complaints.

As for Miss I-would-never-buy-anything-sold-at-Target, way to let a pretentious fixation on branding get in the way of style. I didn't turn my nose up at my fuschia sateen strapless sheath with built-in corselet (retailing at just $39.99) because the tag said "Target," and god help me if I'm ever more concerned with where something is sold than buying and wearing something fabulous.

How rude was that? I was trying to say that I don't understand why women who are bigger than an A cup feel that they can't show off a little cleavage. I would have loved to have a body like Brigit Bardot, but unfortunately I am built more like Debrah Messing (and have to put up with a lot of rude comments becuase of it.) Limited view of style, no? If a piece of clothing makes you look completely fabulous, people will say, "NahnCee, you look fabulous!!" not "Is that from Target?" So go look fabulous with restrictions.

Any idea whether she will have it available in other colors than black (even steel grey, but I would love RED)?

As a general rule, I don't wear black except to funerals (odd, I know, but I am just not a fan of the color). I would love the dress in a different color and am sure it would turn into a staple of mine.

Before everyone points out that I can accessorize with colored scarves and jewelry (and I have quite a few scarves that would look FABULOUS), I am just asking if the guys know if there would be other colors available also, because I would rather wait for other colors than purchase the black. Nothing against the LBD, but I am not comfortable in all-black.

b) can you make a collection with dresses like this, maybe some for summer too
c) please ship them to Europe too

Or you could really start selling the patterns :-). Much easier to ship to Europe ...

WORD!!!

I bought a fantastic Mizrahi skirt at Target, and I'm waiting in front of the door the day that SJP's line gets there.

The days when "good quality" and "pretentiously expensive" were synonyms is over.

And please girl, you'd buy it from QVC but not Target? WTF?

And yeah, T&L, find out the exact colors and get us some pictures of actual people wearing the dress - both people it looks good on and people it doesn't. I'd like to see it on a couple of plus-sized models with different body types.

And if QVC won't ship to Europe I would totally let somebody PayPal me the money and ship it.

Stunning is right!

THAT has to be the perfect black dress! I love that she designed it with sleeves and she is right, it is SO hard to find a dress with sleeves that doesn't make you look like a linebacker or that you are wearing a moo-moo.

I WANT ONE!!!! LMAO. For under a $100 you betcha!

THANK YOU LAURA for designing clothes for the real woman! I'm tired of sorting through dozens of dresses that are made for teenage girls with NO boobs, no hips and no tummy. Not that I was ever a teenager without boobs...hit a D cup by the age of 14. And dresses that have been "upsized" into misses/womens with no consideration for how a woman's body changes once she's out of puberty.

And I have the PERFECT shoes for such a dress! LMAO.

So what if someone won't buy from Target? That just leaves more for the rest of us poor slobs that don't have or want more debt. LMAO.

About QVC...

When Laura's stuff goes on sale on TV, it will also be on their website. Laura will probably have an hour long shows that run 2, 3, or 4 times in the course of one day. QVC will have an inventory of thousands of dresses, but I won't be surprised if Laura sells out. You don't have to be watching TV, you can check out the website or just get the phone number and call on the day she is on.

If QVC is smart, and they are, they are reading this blog and getting the color list together.

I also heard that she is currently scheduled for February 2008.

Thank you for the info. I've never bought anything on QVC. That'll be the first time :)

Anonymous said...

The first time I bought from QVC was for Heidi Klum's clover jewelry collection (found out about on here or BPR, 'natch!).

Second time I seriously contemplated was for Chloe Dao's collection, but it was too bar-hopping, twenty-something.

I will definitely have my computer set up for Laura Bennet, especially because QVC often won't let you order online until the first airing of a collection--so you have to hit those buttons as fast as possible.

They are pretty good about restocking, though, especially things that sell out quickly. But it depends on LB's manufacturer.

Anyone else want to add color requests for those who may be watching?

From previous posts and my own preferences:
Black, steel grey/slate blue, burgundy, red, hunter/dark green, maybe a blue or yellow in the short sleeves for a spring/summer option? Obviously not all the colors could be available, but at least a choice of 2-3 would be nice.

I can see myself wearing that dress to a ton of weddings and it always looking different because I've accessorized differently.

And we mustn't forget sizing:
Petite through women's, please!

We're not fussy, we just want the world! ;)

100 bucks? I'll take 10! And stockings? I haven't seen women wearing stockings in like 10 years unless they are an ice skater, including my 76-year-old mother. And the Target comment-- my take is that it wasn't that she was a snob but that the ubiquity of Target clothes makes it easy to spot what is from there and you are much more likely to run into someone wearing the same thing. Dress like you mean it, bitches.

I love black, and I wear a lot of black (I'm wearing a black/white sleeveless dress right now that looks a whole helluva lot like Laura's dress, sans the long sleeves), but I love colors, too. Unfortunately, I think women get a little bit lazy and fall back on black, rather than take a risk with color, and designers know that.

"And stockings? I haven't seen women wearing stockings in like 10 years."

**shrug** Then you don't live where I live or work in my profession. I see bare legs in a formal hearing, and I think "trailer park". But that's just me. :-)

Word!

the ubiquity of Target clothes makes it easy to spot what is from there and you are much more likely to run into someone wearing the same thing.

So what? Great style is great style. I don't need to spend a lot of money or be a label whore to "dress like I mean it" or wear something with confidence.

In fact, I raise a toast to all you fabulous bitches out there who proudly dress for less.

One of the most boring dresses I've ever seen. Seen it before a thousand times. Oh well, what would you expect from Laura but the same old thing?

And if you didn't, well, perfect excuse to go shoe shopping! (Although, if you're like me, you don't need an excuse.)

If you can post a link to one of those "thousand" dual-layered, washable, mid-weight jersey knit dresses for < $100, please do so. Otherwise, why boasting that you've see it a thousand times without even mentioning the who (designer), what (fabric), or where (store)?

That dress looks smashing with the belt!!!

Ok. Late to the game.

And I love the dress, but more importantly LOVE how Laura thinks about her designs.

She is SMART as well as fabulous.

Can't say that I will be buying one, cause drag just ain't my thing.

BUT, I hope this is the start of bigger things for Laura.

She is already FABULOUS and SMART and I would love to see her succeed and bring her fabulousness to the people.

More power to chic and stylish that is WEARABLE, WASHABLE and AFFORDABLE.

Just love Bad Mommy bringing fashion to the streets.

I bet this dress would look great with a pair of Emmett's new shoes ...

Just sayin-

Okay, I MUST own this dress, adn I don't want to wait until February!

I was watching a Tim Gunn Style ep last night, Mrs. Applesomething-or-other and Laura was Tim's "special friend". She was AWEsome.

At the end of the show LB gave the little Apple THIS DRESS!!! I was soooooo jealous!

I also hit up QVC to seek out more deets. The poor customer service person I got...sigh...welp, her command of the English Language left a LOT to be desired. Anyway, she had nothing for me. I searched their calendar for Feb. and nothing. It's up to Tom & Lorenzo to keep us informed.

Hmmm...I wouldn't want it from Target or QVC either. Why?

Both companies have a history of ripping off independent artists/vendors. While it is hard to always know about how companies treat employees and the independent workers/contractors who manufacture what they sell, when I do know that they have mistreated or ripped them off, I do not spend my money there. I vote with my feet.

As for color requests: make mine black, deep red or plum/purple please.

LOL, like its sunny, rainy, cloudy, clear..etc. Yep, don't really need an excuse but the shoes I have would be absolutely PERFECT!

Don't know if anyone is reading this anymore but I've got to say that Laura has found a niche that most current designers tend to ignore---the women that can AFFORD their designs. With that I mean women that have either come into their own through hard work and time or those that have reached an age where they are no longer worrying about the previous night's bar tab. LMAO.
