Judging the Judges: Zac Posen Spring 2008 Collection

Monday, September 24, 2007 by
Adorable widdle Zac Posen showed his Spring 2008 collection and we wish he had just kept his mouth shut about it. You see, he claims that he was inspired by the 1978 film " 'Days of Heaven' the Shakers, wheat fields of the Great Plains and the romance of the wide open sky."

Now, it's a lovely collection. Lorenzo likes it more than Tom, but even Tom can see the beauty in it. The vibrant colors, the dramatic silhouettes, the flounces, fripppery and feathers - it's all good, if a little drag queen-y at times.

Just don't feed me a line of bullshit about how this is supposed to represent the dust bowl or something, Zac.

Simple Farm folk.

Wheat!

Something to wear to the hoedown.

Just like what the Shakers wore.

After the show, he went out and plowed the back forty.

I wish designers would stop trying to come up with inspirations for their collections. How about, "I like pretty clothes, and earth tones are in this year"? What's wrong with that?

Anonymous said...

Yikes, the 10th one looks very reminiscent of a diseased tree.

Time for a felling!

"Wheat!"

Gorgeous frocks. (Or should I say, "Nice Harvest?") Zac - that combine of yours baled some B.S.

Anonymous said...

Holy crap! What's with all the poof balls?!?! Do designers actually think this looks good?!?!

By the way...Scarlett, you crack me up!

I don't know - I get a very definite "dust storm" feel out of #7, and one towards the bottom does remind me of an old straw broom.

Wow.....thats all over the map....the navy gown with the detail on the bottom (ruffles? feathers? IDK and I am too lazy to go back and enlarge it) looks beautiful- but whats with the granny sweater and a gown? And that seafoam green atrocity??? And theres one that I swear looks like they dug out Austin's corn husk dress....all brown and dried up.

Yup...real farm-wear. Maybe for Zsa Zsa (Greeeeeeeeeen Acres is the place to be!!)...or was that Eva?

I tend to think Tom hates everything (wink wink- love you Tom....)but this time I have to say I am with him....

the last one (the looooooong beige skirt and white shirt) does kinda look shaker-y. and by that i mean dull and ugly.

"Simple Farm folk"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Snort!

Yeah, just the look for when you're drivin' the ol' Deere Combine!

Anonymous said...

And why is he wearing an Amish costume?

Anonymous said...

Well the last one looks like Laura Ingalls on her first day of teaching school. Other than that, not feeling the inspiration. Some of it's good, though. Better than the craptasticals he usually puts on.

Anonymous said...

I'm a little disappointed and I usually like his collections.

Love love the colors and the gowns. Gorgeous!!

Anonymous said...

I can see some of those dresses on the red carpet.

Anonymous said...

Not crazy about this collection, but I love the elegant draping of the dresses.

Anonymous said...

It's an interesting collection, although some outfits looked a little too literal. The dresses were gorgeous, romantic, ruffled, and artistic. I love them!!

I was just waiting for Scarlett O'Hara to come out and say "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again!"

Ugh. Some of those poofy things remind me of the stuff SJP wore/wears on SATC. But I do think Richard Gere wore a similar hat in Days of Heaven.

Anonymous said...

He does feminine well but in a Barbie sort of way. Not my taste. To many bows, poofy sleeves and long skirts.

I'm not loving it. I mean really, what is there that we haven't seen before?

You know, say what you want about Jay, at least when his Chrysler Building dress came down the runway you had to sit up and take notice.

I know there's really nothing new in fashion, but I found this whole collection to be a giant bore. And if you're going to recycle something, recycle something interesting that actually looks good, not giant puffy things and boring colors.

Exactly what was that giant green puff on the pale green gown? It looks like a giant fabric tumor!

There are some good pieces in the collection, jmho, but any woman buying one of those evening gowns with the giant flourishes has to be very confident, or the dress will be wearing her.

BTW, I've seen "Days of Heaven", and would love to know what Zac was smoking when he said the movie inspired him.

Ok, first of all a couple of the suit-y looking ones were pretty nice, though not very practical as work wear. Actually really liked the sheer white dress with the ruffles (uh, they all had ruffles huh), but it needs some serious undergarments. And the red one near the top had a *fabulous* skirt but the top was just awful.

But overall? WAY too much frill and flounce and frou frou in way too many colors and ugly prints. I remember being grossed out by those giant poofballs in the 80's.

GothamTomato said...

Well, I can see the 1930's influence on many of the garments, so I get that. BUT...

WTF with those HIDEOUS light teal, poufy gowns???? Oh my god. They look like something the trailer park prom queen bought at WalMart! And the first one reminded me of the tumor dress that that meep girl made.

Yeeeesh. I must go cleanse my palate.

And what was he wearing? Did someone tell him that Harrison Ford would be in the audience?

--Gotham Tomato

(p.s.- Just want to make it clear I've never actually been to a WalMart. I make all my judgements based entirely on the inane employees who appear in their commercials & the numbnuts who wrestle each other to the ground, every day after Thanksgiving, for the cheap crapola that will make their Cheeto-laden lives meaningful).

You guys are funny.

"Days of Heaven" is a masterpiece. None of these dresses are. Still, I actually like some of them, and normally young Zac puts me to sleep.

I like the wheatsy "Shakers" stuff.

Not crazy about the flamenco popsicles.

How on earth does #30 (extremely low-cut black swimsuit with car wash fringe dress) end up in the same collection with #34 (white and tan barn raising outfit)?

The mind boggles.

mjude said...

i like some of the pieces but those gowns..ick! how can one resist zac? best part of the collection was this review. you boys kill me every single time! :)

Sewhat? said...

MOST of the eveningwear was inspired by the last 20 years of Oscar De La Renta.

And a carwash or two...

Anonymous said...

is he trying tomake stuff real women wont wear hell I dont know if any women will wear more then half of that.

Sewhat? said...

Wait a minute, hahaha, I just looked at the video and holy cow, that pale aqua/green 'tumor' dress looks like it belongs in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade...the tumor bounces like a balloon...hahaha

I think he meant, "this collection was inspired by the bankers who foreclosed on the folks who farmed the wheat fields of the Great Plains."

Very impractical and very charming. Love it. (but I think I love the succinct TLO commentary more)

Anonymous said...

A whole lot of fug in that collection. BLECH!

(Was this his audition collection for PR?!? :-D)

Anonymous said...

He has no consistancy! Ulgh, those poof balls need to be filled with helium and with each model weighing under 90 pounds maybe they'll just float away...

I do have to say that his layering... I don't know the right word for the sort of right angle ruffles that created a fuller skirt... anyways his technique is absolutely beautiful. Very architectural however I really hated the feathers and the sudden swirls of fabric that made the models look heavy. A skinny belt to tie in all that fabric will do nothing for a waist.

Grin!

Anonymous said...

There is no consistancy in this collection. But I can imagine some of these dresses coming down a red carpet in the future.

Anonymous said...

Well, not the dustbowl, but maybe some of the fluff balls can be removed and used to dust out the barn.

Anonymous said...

I, too, really loved, in a manner of speaking, "Days of Heaven," and I can still picture in my mind's eye and hear (in my mind's ear?) the stalks of wheat blowing in the incessant prairie wind.

That said, Zac, where are the LOCUST influences? 'Cause they sure provided drama in the film!

All the best,

NDC

Very clever, Jip!

I like some of it, I don't like some of it. But I can say that the pretty red frock, second one down on the left, would be very convenient for the working mother who has to stop to breastfeed the little ones while doing fieldwork or household chores.

Oh, wait. Shakers. Never mind.

Anonymous said...

I love the collection! The looks are very tailored and the gowns are magnificent. Great colors and shapes, I think.

Anonymous said...

Aww, zac Posen is adorable. The collection? Not so much. He's still young. He has a lot to learn.

lsaspacey said...

Some were wearing bonnets.

Unknown said...

i have to disagree (gasp!) with your comments. are you suggesting he be more literal about it? that would just be heinous! little house on the prairie is not a good look. this certainly wasn't my favorite collection, and i wouldn't even say i like most of it, but i can understand the abstracted ideas of thunderclouds, earth, wheat fields, etc.

Anonymous said...

Ok people, I LIVE in freaking Fly-over country, smack dab in the middle of the wind-blown prairie. And, frankly, I'm not getting the "Days of Heaven" vibe.

Although, like Katie, I guess there I can see abstracted wheat... clouds....
baby chicks...

Especially the royal blue gown; love it.

Zac looks down on the farm, that's for sure.

Some nice pieces in there. Can't wait to watch them milk cows. @@

I believe I just spotted the infamous "Tumor dress" version 2.0....

You know the one that I'm talking about.

Wow, I must have horrible taste because I really love this collection. It has all the blah blah that they go on about: cohesiveness, originality, "tells a story", etc.

The story isn't Days of Heaven, but it does seem to go from one thing to another in a sort of intelligible way.

I hate those popups in the video, tho. Who cares about Zac? I just want to see the clothes.

Vic said...

The ruffles and poufs are a bit much for me. To each her own.

Anonymous said...

Have you guys seen "Days of Heaven?"

Yes. Poor farm folk. But it's about so much more. It's the sky. The grain. The harvest. The mood. Foreboding. Love. Jealousy. Elliptical glimpses of a time and place. Riding the rails. Acts of observation. The scenery. The scenery. The camera in the scenery. It's an amazing movie.

Does Zac's collection live up to its inspiration? No way. But as a fan of the film, I can see some of the connections.

And there are some fancy duds in the movie too.
