Three We Liked

We've got a lot of catching up to do, Poodles!

Hot. Hot to death. Daniel's been pretty underwhelming up till now, but this was his breakout dress. Love the bustline and the straps.

And we love the way he used the print, layering it to get exactly the effect he wanted. Never let the fabric do all the work, poodles. Work it.

Hmmm. That hem doesn't look so hot.

It's probably a little tighter than it needs to be because it's giving Rebecca a little tummy bump and we seriously doubt she has one. In a way, none of that really matters because Daniel certainly passed the "wing it" test with flying colors this week. He basically pulled this dress out of his ass at the last minute. We've seen other designers in the same predicament but they never produced a dress as hot as this one.

Okay, yes. It is a little Stevie Nicks. But in a good way.

We love the bodice and the alternating strips of fabric she used for it. Not super-crazy about the Batman neck line or the extraneous...stuff she's got going on up there. The belt's cute and the buckle sets it off just enough without being distracting.

If she could have just edited the skirt a little bit, this would have been a much hotter dress. Diana's got an eye for the flowy, kinetic fabrics but there's just way too much of it here. Yes, it flowed beautifully but she looked like she was shoplifting a basketball.

Hmmm. We like it but we don't love it.

It's pretty, but it's also pretty standard. It's a beautiful color and we like the beads at the shoulders, but this could have seriously used something to bump it up a notch. And a fishtail hem just isn't enough in this case. There's also something a little off with the fit. Things look a little puckery and it's not hugging her curves the way it should.

Granted, it's definitely a "walking away" dress and the back is more interesting than the front. It would have looked great on Nicky Hilton and that's saying something 'cuz girl's a skank.

Edited to add: The dress Nick had made for Nicky Hilton on this challenge was worn by Brenda Strong of Desperate Housewives for the SAG Awards. Here's Nick's post about it.

I loved Daniel's dress and thought he should have been Top 3. The judges just didn't get Diana, and I thought it was criminal that she was the bottom this episode. She's PR's equivalent of a plus-sized girl on ANTM; no matter how great they may be, they're doomed from the start. (Not to say that Diana's work was flawless, but you get the point.)

Who's Stevie Nick? *snorgle*

I notice that while dissing Nick's you neglected to show the back, which was the little extra you were asking for.

Danny V. comes into his own. Don't you love how he didn't panic, yet was still good tv? He's the best. Essentially drama-less, yet compelling. And Rebecca looked hotter than hot!

Was Daniels dress a knit or woven, does anybody know? It is the best he has done so far, but still he doesn't venture far from that silhouette does he?
Diana's was very similar to Santino's wasn't it? But much neater in appearance. Too bad she used black. There is an amazing amount of work in that dress, If she had used layers of subtle color it would have really been great.
I agree about Nick's dress being a little plain, it would have looked great on Nicky Hilton, though.
Does anybody know about how many people show up at the auditions in NY as opposed to Miami?

You're right. We hit the "post" button too soon. We fixed it : - )

It's in the episode, Diana doesn't know who Stevie is because she is Diana!

Daniel V.'s dress is hot, but I don't like that fabric and I don't think any Hilton girl would ever wear it.

IMO, Diana's dress was fugly and made the model look like the Wicked Witch of the West.

And Nick's is a bit tarty, but perfect for Nicky Hilton. I would've picked it over Santino's mess of a corsage any day! But then, I'm not a Hilton! I would say 'Thank God' but just remembered they're loaded while I'm always running after an extra $500 or so...

Diana does beautiful sketches. Maybe the best of season 2. Her designs always look way better on paper.

I love Nick's dress. It's sexy and sophisticated. I also love the color.

i would wear the *hell* out of daniel's dress. the other 2? eh...

then again, it's hard for me to separate what's "good" from what I would wear myself.

(maybe that's why I liked the peanut so much in season 3)

I really like the cut of Daniel's dress but the print on the fabric is meh. Nevertheless, I had that dress in my top three, probably because Rebecca worked the H-E-L-L out of it. Girl is FIERCE with a capital Nick.

Speaking of ... that blue dress is great and I would have picked his for the win any day and twice on Friday night.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't go for Daniel's dress. The shape is so '80s, and not in a good way. The layering's a nice touch, true, but the shape is so unimaginative.

Daniel's silhouette and cut is so boring. The typical tank style dress. It fit a little too tight. It gave Rebecca a tummy. The fabric and pattern overwhelmed the details of the folding. It was, meh, quite mediocre.

Ah, Nick, he loves those fishtails. He tacks a fishtail on everything. How tedious.

Diana's was the most interesting, as usual. She's extremely under-rated. Her designs are the most creative and unusual.

I loved Diana's. I thought it was very interesting. :)

I hated that the judges didn't like it as much as I did!!

I liked Daniel's dress and really liked Diana's. It needed a bit of work, but it was a contender, in my book. Didn't love Nick's dress. It pretty much looks like every single dress Nick does. Look at his collections and you will see variations on this dress every time. They are always the one shouldered, or fishtail hem, or both, and always in shiny satin. He needs a new idea.

Daniel's is gorgeous, but I don't think it would have looked good on Nicky Hilton. I'll forgive him the tightness because of his fabric issues. And I'm glad we only have one Daniel now so we don't have to use last name initials.

Would have liked Diana's better in a different color--it would have been so much easier to see and appreciate the fabric criss-crossing.

Nick's is good, but it doesn't wow me. I Personally liked it better than Santino's, but I'm not a big fan of the fishtail.

Liked Diana's dress, but haven't been a fan of the hankerchief bottom since the 8th grade dance.

Sorry Uncle Nick , love you TO DEATH but zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Daniel's dress was absolutely slammin'. It was my winner.

What's a Diana Eng?

Daniel's dress really stood out from the pack!

I didn't care much for the other two. I liked Emmett's and Andrae's better.

I loved Diana's dress. I loved the "What's a Stevie Nick?". I hated the judges for allowing her into the bottom three. That's insane. She could have edited the bottom a little which might have made it a winner or added colors in the bottom to appease the client, but she had a very solid design. I can NOT believe that was grouped with Marla's and Lupe's.

I thought Daniel was great this challenge, and while that was great work with the print I was kinda blahed by the color I think. I dunno. There's SOMETHING that keeps the dress from being a winner. I just tell ya what it is.

I liked Nick's dress. Very Hollywood glamour. Plus if you you have a chance to make a design for some "famous" like that. Why not break out your signature style? Plus he totally fits designing prom dresses.

I LOVE Daniel's dress. The fabric is gorgeous! We finally get to see his real talent.

WOW, Daniel's was smokin' hot, I loved it on Rebecca. To me, most of his things are just okay...but when he does wow me, he REALLY wows me. I would wear that in a heartbeat.

Love Nick, but shiny is tricky...it just amplifies any fit issues, which are aplenty here.

Shoplifting a basketball? Love it! No one wants to sport a beer-gut, and I'm afraid that's what Diana gave her poor model here...otherwise, it's an interesting dress.

Without a doubt, Daniel's was the best of the bunch. I absolutely love his dress!

Now that I see these pictures, I don't like Diana's as much as I used to. The bottom is a little messy. I love Nick's dress. It's perfect for any celebrity. I don't know why Nicky Hilton picked Santino's.

I do think that it is telling that in the end, Nicky never work Santino's dress anyway. This season was particularly bad, filled with "I will wear your outfit" and then not delivering--first Nicky with Santino's dress, then in a later challenge. I think the only person who wore the dress made for them was the final 3 challenge winner, and she's a trooper.

Hi Snaillady2, I'm not sure what other challenge you are referring to that someone was supposed to wear a season 2 designer's outfit, but I did see Sasha Cohen wearing Zulema's skating outfit design. The design was minimally reworked to fit Sasha, but otherwise was very true to the original we saw on the show. It actually looked great on the ice. You're right, though, that I could never find a picture of Nicky wearing the Santino dress.

Thank you for the update. Nick's dress looks perfect on her.

Brenda Strong looks GORGE!

Where was that? On TV or in a live show?
Sorry I missed it.

gothamtomato, I saw Sasha Cohen wear it on TV during an exhibition skate event, not a competitve event. I was struck by how cute it looked when Sasha does that grab her ankle and bend it in front of her nose thing she is famous for.

Daniel's dress rocked. You're right. This is when I started to take notice of him. He didn't panic when he realized he chose the wrong color trim. He waited, then made changes. Loved that he was no drama queen at this point.

This dress is way better than Santino's. I kinda liked Diana's too. But most women would have looked fat in that skirt. She needed to tone it down.

Diana, Diana. Love her, but she, like some others in this season, is dearly in need of some self-editing. Loved the top (even the Batman neckline), loved the buckle, but the skirt, oh no! From the waist up that dress is goth chic with some really nice original details, from the waist down, it's Sabrina the pregnant teenage witch. If Sabrina were blind. And forced to sew her own clothing. From rags. Sad, sad story. But Diana is most certainly one of the most creative thinkers in this group of designers. Never afraid to take a risk, that girl, and good for her.

Daniel's dress...NICE. Yes, this is the moment when most of us fell in love with him, not just for the dress but for the low-key way he dealt with his fabric mistake and turned it into a success.

Nick's...I liked it, but yes, it could have been more distinctive, and I wasn't crazy about the fishtail. I liked the Brenda Strong version better...the length is far more appropriate for the dress, I think. Too good for a Hilton either way, though.

tarah looks better in that dress.
lol.

Brenda Strong looks as sophisticated as a P.T. Cruiser!

Yeah, sure, go ahead, erase this one too!
