Justify My Dance Recital
Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by Author
Here's what we find so annoying about Andrae: he can't just complete the task at hand; he has to make some sort of grandstanding statement all the time.
Which is fine, but this is a reality show competition and it's just not the place for you to be crying about past failures, making a statement on standards of beauty, or in this case, designing something completely inappropriate for competitive figure skating.
Taken on its own, it's okay, we guess. A little sloppy-looking, but okay. It might make a decent dancer's costume but the whole fetishy, Justify My Love thing he's got going on here sort of overwhelms the whole garment. It's fine to use your work to make a statement but so far, every statement he's attempted to make has been an empty one.
Tootie!
And speaking of dancer's costumes...
This is, again, a perfectly serviceable design, but it looks like something a 14 year old would wear at a dance recital. All she needs is patent leather tap shoes with bows on them, braces, and a home perm to complete the look.
The bodice is nice and the fabric she used is pretty. If she'd lost the hat and reconsidered the fringe, it would have gone a long way to dispel the stench of rented dance costume.

I thought Kara's was very conservative and Andrae's made no sense to me, that mask was just hideous.
Blah and blah. Very depressing, I thought.
As the boys said once (I forget which post: Andrae, Madonna called and sounded angry. LOL.
I like the mask, it's kind of naughty...
Kara's is okay, I can see an ice skater in that or a baton twirler.
I think almost all of the designers got totally lost on this one.
With very few exceptions (Chloe, Santino, Zulema), most of the pieces in this challenge were forgettable as far as I was concerned.
So forgettable that I wouldn't have known what they looked like until I saw the screencaps.
Meh.
You have no love for Andrae? I think he was one of the sweetest, no maybe the most endearing contestant in any season. This challenge was ridiculous, although I think that it was one of the most entertaining shows. There is something missing though from the recaps. The flavor of season two!
The spin potential w/ Kara's is the only thing that saves it (fringe can move, baby!). I agree, there's "TAP" written all over it. Considering the conservativism of skating judges (years ago they murdered the scores of a pairs team for dressing in drag), Andrae's mask wouldn't even be allowed. Then there's the ugly aspect. Andrae, love the little lamb, there are way more clever, subtle ways to make a statement than explosives.
Kara's is pretty good- I ice skate, and I could see some people using this costume with the right music (hat and all).
Andrae's is... not terrible sans the mask. Go look at some of the Russian costumes. Or Tanith Belbin's from US National Exhibition.
In my opinion, they're both OK, nothing to write home about, but I hated that mask. Are they allowed to wear masks and stuff like that?
You boys are right on with the design snark as usual, but I can't help but echo angie's concern about your apparent Andrae hate. I love our little lamb, even when his designs suck.
Since my understanding was that they were designing for an exhibition performance rather than for a competition, it's kind of a moot point whether masks are allowed in competition. But it's so ugly and so inappropriate for Sasha--what was he thinking? It would look even worse on a short skater's body than it looks on the model. He said Sasha was so pretty, he wanted to turn her into a dark princess. He was either clueless or intentionally trying not to win.
Kara's isn't quite as bad, but it does look more like a tap dance costume, and not a very original one at that. It could work for skating, although I've never thought fringe looked very good in the spins. But like so many of the others, it was completely inappropriate for Sasha Cohen.
Ummm.... how was Andrae's better than Emmett's? Or Kara's? Or any of them, really, besides Chloe's? This episode really bugged me.
I still think they are way better than the crap Zulema and Santino sent down the runway.
The mask is too distracting. I can't even concentrate on the dress. I hated the color, but that's just me, I hate black on ice.
Haha, now I'm all fixated on calling "tootie!" when even the slightest bit shows on anything, very funny guys....season 4'ers, let this be a lesson to you!
These colors by Andrae and Kara are like a dark, scowling raincloud on a crappy day. And even the most squirrelly of Euro judges wouldn't go for that mask on the ice.
Phlggg. Everything just so blah here....
I was not impressed with these two. Boring, conventional and just plain fugly.
I agree with someone upthread ... I don't like Andrae's design here, but I'm surprised that T&L don't like Andrae himself (if they don't -- do you, sweeties?). I really ended up liking Andrae a lot, though I wasn't sure I would after his meltdown on the runway in episode 2. I'm not lining up to be his hag or anything (as I am with certain other gay boys), but I like him. :-)
p.s. Though I do like Andrae, I would add his to the loooong list of designs this episode that were way, way worse than Emmett's.
Guys, not to sound too defensive, but we snark on practically everyone here. Andrae did some things that we found annoying and in PRG fashion, we made fun of them. If we "hate" Andrae, then we must hate every single contestant the show ever had as well as every single judge.
Is it just me, or does Andrae's dress have some fit issues? It just looks...wrong. Yes, that's the technical term for it!! Seriously, the top makes Danyelle look as if one of her breasts is larger than the other. But maybe that's just the way it's been shot. Or maybe Danyelle does have mismatched boobs.
Kara's, although dull, and, yes, a little tap-dance-y (LOL), is at least well-made and fits her model beautifully. In a different color I might have almost sorta liked it. A little.
For heaven's sake look at that last picture and consider the source. It could have been much worse.
Boys, please , MY 14 year olds look nothng like that pathetic fringy crap!!!!
I look at Kara's and I just don't see ice skating. It looks like it belongs in a dance school.
A note on this whole challenge- they weren't given music to which Sasha would be skating, making it totally unrealistic. I understand that it would make many designs look similar, but NO ONE picks a costume first, music second. A costume for Phantom of the Opera will be different from Carmen will be different from Ave Maria.
Kara's looks more like what a 14 yo would wear to a Halloween party if her mother would let her go as Roxy Heart from Chicago.
Different musical I know but when I look at Kara's I keep hearing the lyrics ... oh wont you give me that jazz hot baby... or maybe it just leftovers from showtune night at Sidetrack
Once again I am left to wonder: Why was Emmett let go?
His costume didn't have tootie, it had bootie. Big difference
The thing that annoyed me about Slowey's comments about Kara's costume was her remark about 'skater's thighs'. Um, those are called 'muscles'. Athletes tend to have them.
It wasn't a great costume, but Slowey's comments were idiotic. I know, I know...consider the source.

Fringe must not be that bad, Sasha's already done it.

Although at least Sasha found color when she did it.
Andre's looks like black candle wax.
