Adios, Alexandra!
Thursday, December 07, 2006 by Author
We didn't really think the judges had a good reason to auf her, so they made one up. The only design issue was that it was too small for the model to wear. Otherwise, it was a perfectly good bathing suit and better than at least a couple of the other ones on the runway.
Good god, girl! Eat a burger or something!
Are those...jingle bells hanging off her? If so, then we amend our earlier statement. There were two design issues.
Seriously, her ribcage scares us. This was a case of not considering the model's body type when designing the garment. She would have looked much better in a one-piece.
Of course, that really wasn't the judges' issue. They aufed her for being derivative. Thing is, that's a crock. You could have made the same argument about any of the suits on the runway. Jay basically started off by saying "I saw a suit somewhere that had a lot of straps, so that's what I'm doing." The only difference is, Alexandra actually came right out and mentioned her inspirations in front of the judges.
Aaaaannnd they basically look like a million other bathing suits out there. Meaning, they were "derivative" too. Silly judges.

Once I again I agree with you guys. The model did look uncomfortable, though, and the suit wasn't particularly well made, I thought. This team did not do a great job of selling itself.
The fabric was boring too.
This episode was a joke. Learn how to whore your way to the media.
None of the designers did anything remotely interesting. Meh.
But Alexandra was making me Zzzzzzz weak after weak.....so I don't really care she got Auf'd.
I couldn't help but notice how you two added the infamous "mean and childish commentary" to your list of critical acclaim. Bravo! to you two for taking mean, meaningless, dispirited commentary and turning it into something that everyone can get ammusment from! If only I could handle such ilk with the same amount of style and humour!
Yeah - the bottoms definitely needed more fabric. The second picture was kind of slow to load (darn you, computer), and there was definite concern over whether she even had bottoms on at all... I mean, okay, skimpy bikinis, sure, but that was a strong cough away from a public indecency charge.
Ah well, she's young - still time to learn.
Love you guys! I wish I had enough money to buy Season 1 to watch along with the commentary. :-( But as long as I have you guys, life is good.
Within a few years of moving beyond wearing fig leaves, Man has pretty much covered the human form about all the ways that it can be done. The only changes since then have been material choices and whether you got burned at the stake for deciding to wear something. After that, pretty much everything is derivative and it is a rather lame excuse for 'aufing' someone. That is, unless it is a deadringer copycat situation or unless you load the gun and hand it to the judges saying "I was inspired by" (ahem, cough, cough "copied" insert the name, in this case:) "Missoni". You would think these designers would learn not to shoot themselves in the foot on the runway, ala Vanessa.
I think that since this was the first season, the judges had to brutally set the show's guidelines by punishing people who were not obviously, independently creative. Unfortunately they are still doing this. Hence they too often choose stupidly designed things over well designed things because they are 'innovative', the yang of 'derivative'.
One more thing, now that Alexandra is gone, she reminded me soo very much of Allison Kelly; I think it was her mannerisms and some of her facial expressions. I think the similarity is eerie.
wow, her boobs are hanging out of the top (from the bottom of the cups). And the bottom is way too small, too.
It makes sense, I think. Austin and Jay were worthy contenders and Kara Saun and Kevin were safe. Wendy didn't follow the "bathing suit" guideline, Alexandra didn't implement "for an evening party". That is, Wendy just made a cover-up and Alexandra just made a string bikini. Between the two, Wendy's was prettier and more original, plus Martinique looked beautiful. So Alexandra had to go.
Lord have mercy! Where is ULI when you need her?!
I think that part of the reason she was Auf'd is due to the fact that she did not show much range. Her "innovation" dress was not innovative. Her dress from the previous challenge was something that she had made before (and most likely appeared in the portfolio that she gave the judges). She gave the judges an excuse by saying that she based her design on other designers (a judge no less).
That being said, Wendy really should have been eliminated in this because she did not make a swimsuit. Her model could not wear the thong Wendy made, thus her model wore a dress. Also, no one could have done worse with Johnson than Wendy.
God, she is NAKED! That was way too small. Also, the fabric was very plain.
Weight is a sensitive subject that should not be made light of-trust me.

Alexandra was auf'd because she wasn't whacky or controversial enough. Robert's was ugly and fit badly and Wendy's wasn't even a bathing suit.
Although I really loved the fabric Wendy used for the half of a bathing suit she made, I agree that her effort was worse than Alexandra's simply because Wendy only did half of the assignment, IMO. That said, I don't think Alexandra brought anything to the show -- I can't think of a single design of hers that really stands out. So I don't really mind Alexandra's aufing, though I definitely think Wendy should've gone first. (Oh, and Robert's swimsuit ... dude, they're not supposed to be LOOSE.)
What size model did she think she was designing for? It's bad enough that the models don't get paid, but it's downright nasty to force them to attend a public party wearing a swimsuit designed and made in a few hours, without giving the designers time to do a fitting and make some adjustments.
i'm sorry but i really LOVED it
the styling was perfect too
i thought she was going to win :S
I didn't see anything wrong with her swimsuit. I thought it was cute, yes, the bottom was a bit short, but certainly not "aufworthy," as Fashion Curmudgeon would say.
No reason to send her home. What about Kevin and that hideous outfit? It didn't even look like a swimsuit!
Jingle bells hanging off her? WTF??? Just in case she gets lost at the beach?
It fit poorly, the fabric was boring (Missoni-like?) and it wasn't wearable at a party. Why make up a dumb reason like it was derivative? Please, no more than Kara Saun's or Robert's.
But Kevin or Wendy could easliy have been chosen to be auf'd. I agree, they were just bored with her. Kiss of death, even when Nina has the night off.
I agree that the excuse for sending her home made no sense. You're not allowed to be inspired by other designers? Since when?
Having said that, I thought hers was one of the least appropriate outfits to wear to a nightclub, which was supposed to be part of the challenge. Still, it wasn't the worst and she shouldn't have been aufed.
Oooooo that is teeny, one sneeze and, well, hope she had toupee tape at the party.
I thought hers was one of the least appropriate outfits to wear to a nightclub.
Kevin's seemed the most appropriate for this (Morgan wore his outfit to a club after the event), yet the judges didn't seem to care.
The model looked extremely uncomfortable trying that on in the workroom. Alexandra should've taken that into consideration, but again, you can't do much in five hours, can you?
This suit reminds me of that Princess Leia Star Wars bikini... and as much as people call her boring, I liked her suit more than the others.
Kara Saun's (although i love her) had no imagination behind it. Robert's was blah. And Wendy & Kevin's wasn't a bathing suit.
The judges should've came right out, "You're not good TV, You're out."
It's episodes like this shows that its personality (and the ability to bullshit) over talent that prevails.
Unlike most of the others, this was a real bathing suit. I don't know what the judges were smoking.
Sewhat? is right. Why would you mention other designers when you're talking about your own design. We all know that in the real world most of the designers get "inspired" by other designers, but you should never say that in a competition.
Ok, I'm gonna say it. I used to sew my own bikinis back in the good old days when I could wear them without feeling self-conscious.
Even my worst effort looked better than Alexandra's. It's not that hard to fit the top so that your boobs don't hang out the bottom.
The darned thing hangs crooked as well. Uggh.
Frankly, I could whip a swimsuit out in a few hours and every single one of them looked better than Alexandra's. I'm not saying her bathing suit was the worst of the lot, but she DID do a horrendous job.
What I don't understand is why she made it so small. It's REALLY small. She said that's the type of bikini she wears. I'm from Venezuela, but not even I would wear something that tiny.
bathing suits, bathing suits. who cares? basic black tank will do.
from what i saw on the beaches last week, we'd all best be covering up head to toe anyway.
note to self: do. not. bake. in. the. sun. it's lovely when young, but yikes! yikes! YIKES!!! with some years, it's a fright!!
poor alexandra. poor robert. i think it was hopin' to break off a shot of leg before alexandra ;-)departed.
This was a very cute suit, but the judges were correct that it wasn't particularly original. Plus, in my book, if more of the butt hangs out than in, the suit is a failure.
One other thing. It appears that Alexandra didn't even line the bikini bottom because the model's butt crack was clearly visible. That's a serious faux pax.
@aflac.comI think that Robert could hhave been auf'd this week just as easily. His swimsuit had just as many fit issues as Alexandra's, and to me was a lot less inventive. And it was just uglier.
As far as Alexandra "copying", Heidi even said herself that Jay's looked "Gucci-ish" and I agree with her. But his was actually more of a copy than Alexandra's. I don't feel Jay should have been sent home. But I also feel that the time to send Alexandra home would have been for making the Golden Girl wedding dress last challenge.
I was just so confused by her fabric choice here. I actually own that fabric in a different colorway and can tell you that it is NOT appropriate for a swimsuit at all because it is a rayon blend with too little stretch. It was really a case of her not taking the percentage of stretch into account when drafting her pattern, something that, as a professional, she should have known.
i don't hate this one.
this bathing suit is ok,
but, poor erin(also her bottom), she had to wear that WHOLE NIGHT and pretended to be happily selling it.
again, they eliminate alexandra because they...just want to eliminate her! poor girl, if you are not cutie-gay and you are not dramatic, don't even come to this show!
i don't even like that winning dress. also, i don't like melissa, sorry.
this challenge is holy crap.
picking a party-monster morgan didn't help.
anyone ever watched the Project Catwalk?? ok if you have watched, you can see the following section below, but i think spoiler is even fine. project catwalk is boring.
that is, in project catwalk, if you think "it's time for that contestant to go", then he/she is out. very funny. their judges also eliminate people just because they want to.
this part is like ANTM a lot.
Melissa MUST have been pursuing her own agenda with R.J. No WAY is she ho'ing it up that much just for the challenge.
cameltoe. that's all I got to say.
You can see her "scuba."
Boo, Alexandra's model is wearing hair extensions. What is so inordinately mind boggling about the concept of growing your own cheveux? Er...swimsuits, right. I didn't much care for the bikini, either. It looked ill-fitting and was a bit bland.
alexandra was boring
the models body is perfect
