The Best of the Rest

What is it with all the retro stuff this week? True, Banana Republic did have a "Grandma's attic" story to sell, but the designers went a little overboard.

It's pretty. The top and the neckline look great. Delicate and feminine, which definitely seems to be Alexandra's thing. Downside: it's a little too nightgown-y and once again, these all-one-color dresses tend to get a little boring. And that hem looks a mess.

Is it us or are the designers overusing the accessories wall this season? It's a chic, pretty dress and that hat does nothing for it. In fact, it takes away from it.

Kevin's aesthetic is pretty hard to pin down and this is coming from someone who's seen everything he made this season. This is sort of "classic with a twist" but then some of his other designs have been as out-there as anything Jay or even Jeffrey made.

Love the skirt, love the trim, hate the flower, but then again, we're pretty biased against them. We can't stand grown women wearing bows or flowers unless it's done with real subtlety. This is not subtle and it really works against the dress, which is all urban sophistication. It really doesn't need that Daisy Mae touch.

This was clearly not a Banana Republic dress, but props to Nora, because we really liked this one. Could've done without the neck brace, though.

Not crazy about that sash, but we loved the fabric choice and the asymmetrical pleating. BUT ENOUGH WITH THE MINNIE MOUSE GLOVES.

I didn't like Kevin's dress; but you're right, I think the problem is that stupid flower.

And I thought Nora's was pretty nice, but being on the same runway with Jay's dress didn't do it any favors.

I liked Nora's, especially the color.
I didn't like Alexandra's at all. I don't know, it looks like a shapeless sack.

Meh to all three. The judges seemed to crow about Alexandra's dress and I couldn't understand why. Not any of them twirled my cookies.

Ditto with the stupid flower. I wholly agree with you guys and Eric.

Thank you for those lovely close-up shots of the clothing. One of my main complaints about PR is that they never give us a good look at the damn clothes, which are supposedly what the show is all about.

This is the first time I've seen the edging on Kevin's dress. That detail raises the dress to a new level, IMO.

I thought Aledandra's and Nora's were really pretty, and in the choice of fabric and gneral esthetic were Banana Republic-y enough. Both had issues, but at least they said something, whereas the winning dress, which was good, seemed very conservative and unoriginal.

I also was looking at the runway thinking "and we all need gloves why?" Bleah!!

And Nora, dear ickle cutie Nora, why oh why did you have to make your model look like she's shilling for a car injury specializing attorney's office?

I just read on EW's website that Tim Gunn has not yet been signed for next season. Carry on.

It really sounded like the judge from Banana Republic wanted to give the win to Alexandra, and the other judges didn't let her have her way. Interesting, because in later seasons when there's been a specific client also acting as judge, it seems like they've given the client the power to select the winner. Although I don't think Wendy's design was bad, it's hard for me to see why the judges thought it was better than some of these other efforts. Overall the designers (with the exception of Starr & Robert) did pretty darn well on this one.

Alexandra's dress looks like something Hailey Mills wore as Pollyanna.

weren't the designers specifically given an "art deco" directive which would have directly driven the designers to all go retro?

Not necessarily. Jay's dress was arguably the most deco out of all them and we don't think it was retro at all.

I have to say that I hated Kevin's dress when I watched the episode, but now being able to see all the details I kind of like it.

I can totally see Alexandra's dress at a Banana Republic store. Plain, boring, safe.

Yes, thank you for the close-ups. They really help me critique the dresses a lot better.

I think Kevin's dress is the prettiest out of all of them - structural and at the same time flowy, which is what give it the sophistication. I think the overexcessorizing has to do with the designers' lack of confidence in their own work.

Nora's was very pretty. I could see myself wearing something like that.
I hate the gloves.

I’m not a big fan of fabric flowers on dresses. Real or embroidered ones are better.

Were they forced to use those accessories? They ruin the outfits.

Kevin's dress is very elegant and pretty sans flower. I love the red trim.

Greetings from Austria! I love your blog and commentary. This is one of my favorite American shows.

Am I the only one who wants to take a giant scissors to Alexandra's obvious extensions? Ugh.

After seeing it for a second time in detail, I like Kevin's dress, sans flower. The skirt detail is nice.

I did *not* like Alexandra's dress for this challenge. I thought it was not at all flattering. Shapeless is more like it. And there was just something off about the length. As safe and dull as Wendy's garment was, I liked it a whole lot better than Alexandra's.

Kevin's dress I would buy. I loved Jay's dress, which was just spectacular. Kara Saun and Austin made beautiful dresses as well, but if I were chosing a holiday dress for myself, to go to an holiday office party or a family/friends get-together in NYC, this is the one I'd probably go with. Yes, I'd probably take the flower off (but I kinda liked the hat. Don't tell anyone).

Nora's dress was quite nice. I didn't mind the sash, but agree that the scarf wrapped 'round her throat over and over and over again did nothing for the overall look. But she did good.
