Project Runway at the Met Costume Institute Gala

Tuesday, May 06, 2008 by

The Met had their annual Costume Institute Gala and this year, because of the current Met exhibit, the theme was superheroes.

"Fashion not only shares the superhero’s metaphoric malleability, but actually embraces and responds to the particular metaphors that the superhero represents, notably that of the power of transformation. Fashion celebrates metamorphosis, providing unlimited opportunities to remake and reshape the flesh and the self. Through fashion and the superhero, we gain the freedom to fantasize, to escape the banal, the ordinary, and the quotidian. The fashionable body and the superhero body are sites upon which we can project our fantasies, offering a virtuosic transcendence beyond the moribund and utilitarian."

Fabulous, no? Tom wants that gigantic sculpture of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman for the garden. You should check the link above, there's some fascinating rumination upon the superhero costume and how it relates to fashion.

Anyway, enough highbrow shit. Let's rip some dresses!

Donna Karan.

We're thinking this is a Hulk tribute.

Michael Kors and Kristin Davis.

Kristin Davis in Michael Kors.

Very pretty. The train's probably a bit much, but it IS a ball, after all.

David and Victoria Beckham wearing vintage Giorgio Armani.

Those are wax figures, right? How do they manage to go through life looking airbrushed?

Credit where it's due, though. Posh's dress is fierce.

Ivanka Trump in Gilles Mendel.

Very pretty, but a little boring.

Diane von Furstenberg

Finally! Someone looks like they're working a superhero theme! Gorgeous.

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen wearing Wonder Woman–inspired gowns by Diane von Furstenberg.

Frankly, we're not seeing the Wonder Woman influence. Gold Olsen's dress is ugly. Black Olsen's is pretty hot.

Ellen Barkin in Diane von Furstenberg.

Sure, Ellen's had way too much surgery, but we have to give the woman props, because in her middle age, she's become quite the standard for how to look gorgeous and sexy and age appropriate.

Karolina Kurkova and Vera Wang

Karolina Kurkova wearing Vera Wang.

Again, it's got an appropriately superhero-y feel to it, but that doesn't make it a good-looking dress.

Couldn't ONE of these bitches have shown up in star-spangled panties? Where's Betsey Johnson when you really need her?

Zac Posen and Kate Mara

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Oh, Zac. You dork.

Kate Mara in Zac Posen.

It's a gorgeous dress and despite our laughter, we applaud Zac's Clark Kent schtick.

David Bowie and Iman wearing Dolce & Gabbana.

THIS is how it is motherfucking DONE, y'all! Bow down!

Most of the dresses are eye poppingly appropriate. I love DVF's , she is can work it with a nod and a wink.
Donna's flashing a snake.
I don't like seeing the shoulder pad and stick on bra in the Posh dress, and what is going on with her face in the 2nd picture, she looks like the wicked step mother from Snow White.

Donna Karan -- what was she thinking? Who goes around like that?

Kristin Davis looks great, though I'd like it better sans train. But she looks like she's having fun with it.

MK: I miss his shades 'n turtleneck. (Not really; he looks good.)

Isn't there supposed to be an underslip with the dress Victoria Beckham is wearing?

Vera Wang's dress is a horror; I wonder if it looks better "live."

Zac Superposen looks cute; I appreciate the humor (if not the yellow dress).

Iman is stunning (is it possible for her to be anything less?), but I don't like the dress.

Vera Wang's dress is all sorts of fug! BLECH!!!

I vote Iman needs to overthrow Heidi. She's FIERCE!

Donna Karan: I have no words to describe the pure fug.
MK: Dashingly handsome
Kristin Davis: Gorgeous
Victoria Beckham: Sourpuss dressed in an old tablecloth
Ivanka Trump: Super washed out
Diane Von Furstenburg: SUPER Classy
Olsen Twins: Super fug in need of a good hairwashing
Ellen Barkin: GLAM
Karolina and Vera: Glad Bag Twins
Kate Mara: Yep, Big Bird
Iman: Epitome of SUPER Gorgeous

Hear, hear. I don't care how thin or chic a woman is. If she goes around looking like she just bit into an unripe persimmon, she's just plain unattractive.

Iman will never cease to amaze me. She deserves a coffee table Look Book so we can all drool over page after page.

Zac cracked me up! THAT is how to have fun at a party.

And I think the majority of the celebs proved that not just anyone can be a superhero.

If Vera Wang dresses herself like that, how can anyone trust her with their wedding dress??

Hello? Hello?

The train on Kristin Davis is a bit much???

But don't you want a nod to superheroes? Isn't that train a perfect nod to a superhero cape? Am I the only one who got the analogy? Shouldn't Kristin get the "Best Dressed Super Heroine"?

Can I finish this post without a question mark?

black olson's dress is amazing. i am assuming it's ashley cause she is the normal one, right?

anyway, it looks totally fresh and she actually looks like she is in her twenties!

Random thoughts: Someone needs to tell Donna that she is too long in the tooth (or boob) to go braless.

Kristin Davis looks absolutely stunning. There is a big disconnect between MK's ready-to-wear and higher end lines. This gown is fabulous & adorable.

I'm starting to think that Her Poshness is one of those who thinks that smiling gives her wrinkles. But the non-expression actually makes her look older.

DVF: Easy elegance.

The Olsen twins are what now, 45 years old? Whatever they're doing, they need to stop.

What the hell is Vera Wang wearing? It looks like a crafts project. Not crazy about Karolina's gown either, but her ass saves it (which would make her ass a superhero, thus being on-theme).

I get that Zac came as Clark Kent, but why is his date dressed like Woodstock?

Iman: Perfection. The woman should be cloned.

Most of these were lovely. I adore Kristin Davis -- she's cute and perky and seems refreshingly normal. Donna, Donna, Donna. No one over 41.5 years old who isn't flatchested should be seen braless. Ever. Unless there is some "Droopy Dog" superhero I'm unaware of.

Iman looks great, but is it just me or do her head and neck look....odd?

Ivanka Trump looks like a freaking Barbie, Iman looks gorgeous, Kristin's gown is beautiful, the rest is just meh.

Bow down? I was already prostrate before I got to the caption under the second photo! That said, I think an off-the-shoulder wrap would have geometrically balanced that silhouette of Iman's out perfectly.

and please, oh please, tell me that Gold Olsen hasn't already shrunk because of her various lifestyle choices. She really worries me.

And DVF runs a close second to Iman in the "Women I Want to Be When I Grow Up" contest. They both make aging look so easy and classy. And that takes some serious super powers, y'all!

Grrg said...

I cannot believe you had nothing to say about Anna Wintour's dress. It was made of tin foil! It features an homage to Princess Leia's hair on the shoulders! It was straight from Barbarella! (In good way...)

And the Armani "tablecloth"? I'll wager it's GORGEOUS fabric. But Posh is looking scarier by the day.

Donna Karan: I have no words to describe the pure fug.
MK: Dashingly handsome
So I got to wondering what their superhero name and power would be...

Kristin Davis (by M. Kors): 'Chiffon-o-girl'. She lures you in with her billowy chiffon and blinds you with her dazzling beaded top.

Victoria Beckham (by Armani): 'Bridezilla!' An evil florist stuck plutonium in her bouquet. Now look what happened! She kills you dead with her scowl.

Ivanka Trump: 'Countess Vacuula'. She hypnotizes you with her forehead jewel and empties the contents of your brain.

Diane Von Furstenburg: 'Poly Chromatic'. She confuses you with her multiple colors then incapacitates you.

Olsen Twins: 'Power Rangers DUI'. Their super powers originate from the VIP section at the local night club. Their vapid expressions are contagious.

Ellen Barkin: 'Botoxerator'. Continuous exposure to Botox and plastic surgery has rendered her immune to most toxins. She can wrestle live, venomous snakes with her bare hands.

Karolina, Vera Wang and Kate Mara: The Ruffle League. The ruffles disguise a host of high tech weaponry.

Iman: (in Dolce and Gabbana) 'Iman'. Her hands are lethal weapons. Just look at what she's done to tame David Bowie!

Zac Posen: 'Dr. Indigo' the mad scientist in cahoots with Vera Wang that created 'The Ruffle League."

Anonymous said...

OOPS...that's what you get when you cut and paste, people.

Donna Karan: She's "Floppy" from the 'Fugtastic Four'. The other three were not featured in the photos. One look at all that exposed skin and you lose your appetite. Needless to say, she's the favorite super hero of the supermodel set.

Michael Kors: Clearly, this is his civilian disguise that he wears when he isn't teaming up with Meana Garcia and Heidi.

My theory on Posh:

She thinks she looks goofy when she smiles, so she doesn't. Perhaps she's hiding some fine, English orthodontia.

To me, it's no different than people who think that wearing all black makes them look skinny and chic.

Posh's dress looks like a housecoat/bathrobe that Joan Crawford would wear. I don't care if it's vintage; it's ridiculous.

Not as ridiculous as the dress Vera Wang was sporting, but still.

Not as much as I loved Iman's overall look though....she is a Goddess.

I loved Posen's nerdy take on superman. It's cheesy, but it's superheroes so I like that he went there.

DFV is always fabulous. Ivanka shocked me as I thought her's was pretty fantastic, with a perfect superhero styling. Iman is perfection.

Donna Karan and Vera Wang look like they should not be in charge of dressing anyone, especially themselves. DVF, on the other hand, looks fabulous. Posh makes even vintage Armani look low-class skanky.

One of the Olsen twins looks great, but the other one (Mary-Kate?) looks worrisome. Kristin and Ivanka look conservatively gorgeous. Iman rocks even though I don't love her dress. Ellen Barkin does seem as if she's had a little too much cosmetic intervention but is lovely from the shoulders down. Zac and his friend, Big Bird, get the joke but if you didn't know the super-hero theme of the gala they'd look totally ridiculous. I take that back. She looks ridiculous anyway.

LOVED kristen davis -- i also thought the train was a tribute to the "caped crusaders" -- gorgeous!

vera wang looks like she got the dress on backwards --- she's wearing the bustle in the front. hideous!

I totally agree. I loved the train/cape and thought it was funny and smart. One of the few that really embraced the theme of the night without going overboard.

And I have to ask. I'm sure I should know, but what is the pencil/boob rule? I've been sitting here thinking of what that rule could possibly be, and I've got to know.

A few guesses. "You should not be showing cleavage if:

1. The most obvious, you can't hold a pencil between your boobs."

2. You can't hold a pencilhorizontally b/w your boobs."

3. You CAN hold a pencil vertically under your boob."

4. You cannot hold a pencil b/w your boobs and write this haiku:
'My boobs pass the test
Perky breasts for all to see
Thank God for push-ups'"

5. You have actual pencils for boobs. OR

6. You have lead nipples

Why have I not heard of this rule? Can someone please fill me in?

Diane von Furstenberg: the colors are marvelous on her! But are those gladiator sandals peeking out from under?

The Olsen girls: that gold one looks way to big, and the black one needs to have the holes mended.

Ellen Barkin: totally rocks it.

Vera Wang: once again, evidence that being a hot-shot fashion designer doesn't mean you can dress yourself.

Zak Posen: see Vera Wang

La Trump needed Wonder Woman colors; they would have made that outfit. As it is, meh.

Ellen Barkin's Grecian column... she came dressed as Wonder Woman's mother, and I mean that in a good way. Tasteful, understated use of the theme.

Is Vera Wang suffering from MPD? Her bridal line seems to bear no relationship whatsoever to everything else she makes. I swear that they're made by two different designers, Vera1 amazing bridal woman, and Vera2 woman who throws fabric at the dress form and goes with whatever sticks. This dress was, of course, made by Vera2.

But who cares? No one at that party was looking at anyone other than Iman anyway. She was STUN-NING!

Actually the pencil rule goes back to the late 60's/early 70's (and i'm old enough to remember it...) when women first started to go bra-less -- the rule was that if you could hold a pencil (horizontally) under your boob when standing up straight then you were too big/too saggy to go bra-less. donna karan looks like she could hold at least 5 or 6 of them...

Kristin Davis gown was gorg....but I cannot look at her now without thinking about those blow job pictures from a few months ago.

HOORAAY FOR DIAN VF!! Color! What a concept!!

AND Iman is THE QUEEN!

OMG, you guys slay me! Here I was at Ikea all day yesterday schlepping office furniture, and I missed this post!

Okay, to Donna Karan: after a certain age, all that plunging neckline does is emphasize how perky your girls used to be. What can I say? Gravity works.

Posh may have fabulous fashion sense, but in those pictures she looks old. She needs to soften her look.

I once heard the Olsen twins described as "strange little hobbits". Gold Olsen definitely lives up to that in this outfit. Black Olsen - yes, that's a good look

Zac Posen looks like Matthew McConahey (did I spell that right?) as Geekster McGeek. But it is a witty look.

I kinda liked the Watteau train on Kristin Davis.

Oh, and regards Anna Wintour's dress? It looks like she has twin codpieces.Which would explain a lot...

I'm actually getting Posh's superhero twist. Her "superhero" is Scarlett O'Hara and this is an homage to dresses made out of curtains. (OK, I know the Miss Scarlett as a superhero is a stretch)

They actually look like codpiece hip holsters, which makes me wonder: Whose balls are those she is wearing? (poor guy).

Zac Posen is SO CUTE!! Love the dorky glasses on him.

Actually makes him more attractive.

I'm late to the party because didn't have internet access yesterday, but am writing anyway because I just lost my afternoon tea over the Donna Karan photo. good god in heaven, what was she thinking? But thank heavens the boys led us onward and upward, with a few dips in the way for Vera Wang and her sister in silvery crime, Karolina whatever.

DVF, Iman and Anna Wintour are the class winners. And Zac Posen is the cutest in his little schticky outfit, you go, girl.

Posh - tacky, tacky, tacky!!

Ivanka - too bulky for the dress to flatter; also do I see breast veinage?? ugh.

Iman - skirt, grandiose fabulosity; bodice, waaaaay too Jessica McClintock!

Money can't make the Olsen Twins look better than that?

Money is probably the reason they look as bad as they do.

I like the gold Olsen, she has sort of a come hither quality about her.
And Vera Wang her dress has a strangeness that is appealing to me.

I have to disagree with you guys on one thing. Victoria Beckham = HOT TRANNY MESS.
Here are a few words that clue you in to how wrong it is.
See Through
Lace
Maxi Shirt Dress
Shoulder Pads
Uber Split

She looks like a Madame from a very chic brothel!

The Olsen twins look like they'd fall down if they loosened their grip on eachother.

It was all great, but

THIS is how it is motherfucking DONE, y'all! Bow down!

wins the prize.

Like DVF. She hasn't lost her sense of fun. The Olsen girls scare me too much for me to really notice the outfits. They both look like they're in the middle of rehab and it isn't working....

priceless! I'm sure we will be screaming that comment all year!

Kristin Davis looks fresh, pretty, and fun. Victoria looks old, dried up and crabby and not fun (honestly who could live with that much attitude day in and day out). Which one would you rather look like? Which one would be rather be with?

honestly, as an aside, I think Victoria thinks she's channeling Anna Wintour.

If the dress Kristin Davis is wearing was cut off just below the knee, it would be a dead ringer for my oldest sister's 1964 prom dress....

Yes, I know I'm two years late on reading this, but too bad.
