In or Out: Meryl Streep

Wednesday, July 02, 2008 by
Fabulous Meryl Streep attended the world premiere of "Mamma Mia!" the Movie at the Odeon Leicester Square in London wearing a red coat dress from the Donna Karan 2009 Resort Collection and Christian Louboutin peep-toes.

Oh, Mary Louise. Now we're fighting over you.

Lorenzo thinks she looks fabulous top to bottom but Tom just doesn't agree. One thing we can both agree on: she gets an A for effort, because Miss Streep doesn't always make the best fashion choices.

Those shoes look like they're killing her, don't they?

It's a beautiful and striking dress and the color looks great on her, but like so many of Donna Karan's looks, what looked good on the model, looks big and blousey and sloppy on anyone over a size 2. Coupled with hair that looks like she hit the freeway with the top down and the whole look comes across pretty slapdash, slipshod, haphazard. That was what the thesaurus gave us when we looked up "sloppy."

Still, she's Meryl and despite the fact that she looks a little uncomfortable in her red satin shopping bag, we can't deny that she's glowing. Because T Lo is torn, we can't declare this an In or an Out. You bitches do it.

I think the most appealing things are the shape of the neckline and the color. And don't forget the shoes...those are fabulous!

Everything else looks sorta like a bathrobe.

Anonymous said...

Have to say "In"...given her other looks that were just a slam dunk (emphasis on 'dunk'), this look is refreshing and glamorous. I agree that the oversized flump of Karan's design is a bit lost in translation; but I like the addition of the accessories, which somehow seem to make the look (if not even date it in a slightly retro way)- and the bitch is working it. Go, Darling...Prada still loves you!

Anonymous said...

I don't think it looks any better on the model!

Anonymous said...

In. But I hate the shoes. For some reason, I think they look like stripper shoes.

Anonymous said...

It's an "in." I think she looks fantastic, hair and all. Meryl doesn't always make the best choices when it comes to the red carpet, and I think this ensemble works for her. She's not a size 2, and I think she chose something appropriate for her body and her age. Not everyone can look svelte and teeny tiny. The shoes rock, too!

Anonymous said...

Considering her usual monstrosities, I'm calling this one an "in". It's stylish, age-appropriate with a hint of sexy... plus she really does look like those feet hurt, but they're fabulous and lord knows I'm too lazy to bother with painful shoes.

Magis Theatre Company said...

Meryl is always in, no matter what she wears.

Unknown said...

Based on her past horrendous choices I'll give her an IN this go round. She just sort of looks half finished and I think she could find something a bit better fitting for her body type. But A for effort!

GothamTomato said...

I actually love the look, but it does look sloppy on her. She needed to have someone arrange her when she got out of the limo. But that's the thing about satin - it attracts wrinkles in no time flat. It's very tricky to go anywhere in satin.

Plus, there's something going on with the length of the sleeves that I don't like. The length on the model is better.

As for those shoes: OUCH! Which makes me think of all the fabulous drag queens strutting down 5th Avenue on Sunday in heels like that (and even bigger!), giving my twin thoughts: 1. In my next life I hope that I will be able to walk like that in heels, and 2. If there were any smart podiatrists in the neighborhood, they would have been standing at the end of the parade, handign out their cards.

In - but with heavy weight given to effort considering the kind of things she usually dons for these events. Like the color, like the neckline, but the pockets in front are a big no-no: they add volume to something that's already cut like a bathrobe when the garment seen at an angle. But that's not really Meryl's fault, is it.... Just wish the stylist would've done something more with her hair. But more effort than usual from Ms. Streep.

Sewing Siren said...

I'm going to say IN. I like the color, fabric , and accessories.
I do not like the oversized collar or the cinched waist.
She would look a lot slimmer (and more tidy)if the fitting at the waist was done with darts/seams.

Anonymous said...

In. She looks good for a babe pushing 60. But with a few tweaks, she could've looked smashing. You're right about the hair - it should've been sleak. And what's up with the black bra peepin' out??? She doesn't have enough money to buy a red one to match the dress??? Whaaaa??? The shoes are definitely sexy & fabulous. But the toes!!! How about some color????

--umjudis

Anonymous said...

In. She's Meryl Fucking Streep. And I love the shoes.

mjude said...

becasue its Meryl i say IN. she is just fabulous no matter how messy she looks.

Anonymous said...

Out. I'm not going to excuse her just because she normally dresses even worse. The previous poster was right...the dress doesn't look so great on the model, even. Poofy, wrinkly, and ill-fitting.

That said, she's still pretty hot for an old lady.

Anonymous said...

I give her a B+ for effort.

The color is beautiful and the shoes are TDF. She's definitely working that look.

In another fabric, the shape would have worked much better but it even looks a little sloppy on the model, IMO.

Also, you're Meryl F'ing Streep. We don't need to see your BRA!

S.J. Donovan said...

Of course it looks better on the model, but Meryl still pulls it off fabulously...even if there is an issue with the construction of the garment.

Anonymous said...

I hate to say, OUT, because I adore this woman, but I really hate red and black together. And shiny black and shiny red look especially cheap.
Other than that, the dress looks a tad too bulky on her, but i think the general idea shape-wise is ok.

FashionFanatic said...

I love the look but it does look sloppy on her. One foot in one foot out?

Anonymous said...

I hate patent leather, it always looks chip in a chip way, no?

Meryl Streep is a goddess, she will be always IN.

Anonymous said...

Well I think it is a hit, personally. Being of a similar age, I can understand the challenges of looking chic but age-appropriate. This dress definitely fills the bill, and it looks just as good, if not better, on her as it did on the model. I also love the belt and shoes, although she should have painted her toenais a matching red. It was pulled-together and pretty, and thank heavens she wore a cover-up undergarment. Hooray for the Lady Streep!

Anonymous said...

I think she looks great except the hair, it's prety bad.

Got that right.

Anonymous said...

I think she looks great, except for the shoes, which are not bad in themselves but (you guys are right) they so obviously hurt like hell.

Anonymous said...

In, but just barely. Love the color and she looks like she's having fun.

Anonymous said...

I can't stand those wide belts and they're so in right now.

aimee said...

La Meryl is in. I've definitely seen some red carpet looks from her that weren't so good. But the color on this is fabulous and I love the neckline. I agree that the shoes look ouch-y, and her hair could use some work; but she's MERYL. And thus, IN.

Bill said...

Magis Theatre Company said...

My thoughts exactly.

I have seen Streep in some less than flattering outfits (big, dark, heavy, satiny things that look like bedspreads) but I love the color on her and am willing to forgive some of the less flattering aspects of the outfit.

Ed & I decided years ago that Mary Louise should be given an award at EVERY awards show, EVERY year, because her acceptance speeches are usually quite fabulous.

She works hard. She has talent to burn. She has fun. She seems down to earth. And she's a Jersey Girl! How can I not love her?

And if she was born 40 years earlier, I bet she'd be kicking some ass in the Deathmatch right now!

CQAussie said...

I think Kinda IN.

Cuz:
1) It's Meryl effin' Streep so as such, IN
2) She's looked MUCH worse before
3) The shoes rock
4) The color is really lovely on her, the neckline is flattering and you're right, she's glowing. I also like the belt. The rest of the dress is forgettable and kinda makes me think she's gonna be fussing with it all night long....but still!
5) Her hair is a bit of a mess but again, she's MERYL STREEP. She can sallie out with her hair like a bird's nest on acid and I will find an excuse for it!!

Anonymous said...

Meryl looks spectacular. That dress was made for someone with a real body underneath and looks tons better on her than the clotheshanger. I applaud the black accessoires, that she avoided different reds clashing and don't agree that she should have painted her toes.
IN

Myra Flection said...

In because she looks, like you say, so happy and glowing. I don't usually like these color combos either but she's just working the shit out of it isn't she ?
BTW Gotham, I can't stand in heels let alone wear them in a parade. I watched a Greek parade in Philadelphia last year and these ladies were strutting up the Parkway in stilettos !!! The queens would have been proud.
I echo Tom...Meryl Fuckin Streep ! Love her !!!

Kanani said...

Oh, I hate to say this.
But she's at this point in her life where there isn't as much room between her bustline and hips. The wide belt makes her waistline look even shorter than it is. The black belt just give it something I call "Waistline interruptus."

I think the choice of dress is just all off. It's a summer movie, set in Greece by the sea. I'd of loved to see her wear something looser and in sea-like blues and greens to follow the theme.
By the way, I'm really looking forward to seeing that Mamma Mia! I'll be in Palm Springs this month. I'll wait until then to see it.

Vera said...

You know, I think it's still in, but three small changes would have made it absolutely, no-doubt-about-it in.

1. More fitted sleeves.
2. Tucking that ponytail into a chignon and hitting the whole 'do with some hairspray.
3. Toenail polish. Preferably Jungle Red.

Still, I think she looks pretty fab and, you know...she's Meryl Streep. Starring in a movie where her character bagged Stellan Skarsgard, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth. It's tough to go wrong.

Anonymous said...

Indubidubly (did I spell that right??) IN !!!! The color looks great on her. The shoes are just too, too fab, though they look like they are strangling her little toes. Above all, she looks like she is totally enjoying herself! Can't wait to see the movie, loved the play! Way to go, Ms. Streep, ya look GREAT!

The key here is the event: she wore a bright red resort dress to the premiere of Mamma Mia, a breezy, silly musical that takes place on a Mediterranean island. It's entirely appropriate to the occasion, and I think her gays had their clever caps on when they advised her.

As Professor Frink might say, for all the SHINY and the RED and the WOW CRUMPLY, it still somehow looks age appropriate on her.

My one concern would be that, at quick glance, it looks like a dress that Kim Cattrall wore in Sex and the City, or more accurately, it looks like a 4th grade class' attempt to recreate the dress in Christmas paper. And yes, the shoes are killing her. But overall I say IN, darlings.

NancyDaQ said...

In!

Meryl usually wears very unfortunate outfits. I think they must have hired a stylist for her. Could it be better? Yes. Is it a big improvement? Yes.

Anonymous said...

IN! i have to admit that part of the IN rating comes from the fact that she has been known to wear some real monstrosities on the red carpet, but i really do like this on her. i would have preferred it with the red belt shown on the model as the black one tends to cut her in half, and the bra peeking out of the bodice is a little distracting, but it's still a great look on her. the hair is a mess, but she really is glowing - and gorgeous.

Anonymous said...

Here's the deal.

It's Mama Mia - an over the top, gay CAMP musicals, but its starring one of the BEST movie actresses ever?

How do you say ironic contradiction in French?

Anyway, the fashion choice is a bit over the top, glamour choice for her, that isn't quite fabulous enough for her but doesn't scream FAIL. Kinda just a few missed notes.

Gotta give her love, props and an IN, cause, lord knows, she has done worse, and she still looks great.

Luv her!

Hip yet elegant.
The patent leather accents are very "of the moment", giving the diva an unexpected edge.
Coulda touched up the hair before leaving the limo, but, time may have been a factor.
And, IT'S MERYL STREEP, fer chriminy's sake!

A very big IN.

I'd be a little more blunt. She's usually a ragbag. That is the only negative thing you will ever hear me say about the fabulous Ms. Streep.

Donna Karan, however, will not get a whole lotta love from me. While the color is fantastic, the dress makes her look blowsy. I'd love to see her in something from Monique Luhllier (did I spell that right?)

Just what I was thinking before coming to the comment page! I get it - kimono shaped garments are easy to produce, and accessorize well. But I bet Meryl Streep doesn't have to shop at Ross Dress for less. She can afford clothing that recognizes that while patterns are flat, the human body is curved. Had her stylist straightened the garment out just before she walked the red carpet, she might have looked a little less bunchy, but by the time she got to her seat it still would have looked wrinkled and sloppy.

Come on, designers! Unconstructed shapes combined with satin and other non-stretchy or crisp fabrics result in big bunchy areas. Even size 2 models don't need that kind of help.

Anonymous said...

Meryl herself looks gorgeous but this is not a good dress for her. This is a dress that looked much better on the runway and for some weird reason Meryl looks fat in it.
And I hate the shoes.

How about a silk belt, like the model wore, but in black? That would have been better. And all of you who said that the pockets didn't belong, ditto.

But we love our Meryl and she loves casual dressing. So for her, this is fabu!

So Tlo, why doesn't she call you to be her stylist? I think the truth is, she must not have a real stylist, or she refuses to let him do his job! Or maybe her stylist isn't (gasp!) gay. that would be a mistake!

OUT if you start paying attention to details.

The broad strokes (like the color and the neckline) are good, but the details are wrong. The dress would work better in a softer fabric with a slightly slimmer cut. The stiff satin makes her look like she cinched herself into an oversized dress.

ROTFLMAO - what she said!

Seriously, if La Streep wanted a red dress with an Italian flair, the red Dolce gown Iman wore to the Met Costume Gala (May 6th blog) would have stopped traffic - in a good way.

For someone like me who recalls the Watergate years, this is excellent news. Mitchell was an outspoken & larger-than-life character and Streep should have a blast playing her.

Other casting:
Richard Nixon - Jim Broadbent (he'll be good)
Pat Nixon - Jill Clayburgh (fab choice)
