Project Runway at the Daytime Emmy Awards

Monday, June 23, 2008 by
Y'know, it's really a testament to the show that pretty much everytime there's a red carpet event now, you can bank on at least one PR designer's wares making an appearance. Perfect for us because it gives us more dresses to rip discuss.

Shelley Hennig arrives at the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards
wearing a Nick Verreos from his Spring 2008 Collection

Cute! If you hadn't told us, we probably wouldn't have guessed this was an Uncle Nick.

We like the cap sleeves and the heavy band around the neckline and the open back. All very simple, but well done and in an eye-catching fabric.

Actress Heather Tom arrives at the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards wearing a gown designed by Jack Mackenroth.
The pair also decided to auction the dress off to benefit three HIV/AIDS charities - amfAR, National Association of People with AIDS, and San Antonio AIDS Foundation. People will be able to go to the Clothes Off Our Back site to bid for Mackenroth's gown.

Pretty and eyecatching and feminine. It reminds us a little too much of Chloe Dao but that's not his fault.

The only critique we have is that he used a print and with that design, it's a little busy and fussy looking.

Still, when so many designers run screaming from prints - especially in red carpet dresses - we have to give him props for sticking with them. He loves prints and he knows how to use them.

Get some blotting paper to Heather stat!

Cute dresses, though. I like Nick's better. I think it may have been an effect from the print in Jack's dress, but some of the edges look poorly finished. I suspect it is the irridescence of the fabric.

Uncle Nick's dress is perfect for a summertime red carpet event. What I want to know is --what happened to the black lining underneath? I really liked it.

Jack's dress --"The Little Mermaid" on the red carpet. It's a lot of look. And that color doesn't come off as well against the red carpet as it would, say, at the Ritz Carlton at Laguna Niguel.

oops- forgot to say- Jack's kinda reminds me of Michael's S3 coffee filter dress. But this doesn't look like it smells like Febreeze.

I love the black and white dress. And you're right. I would have never guessed it was from Nick.

Jack's dress reminded me of a combination of Mycheals's coffee filter dress and anything from Chloe due to the color. It's pretty and I don't mind the print, but someone needs to remove the grease from Heather Thom's face before she starts looking too much like Renee Zellweger.

Patsy, get some knitting needles- you're in my brain!

Is it a print? Looks like a burnout to me...

It's silk chiffon with a burnout floral pattern. The dress is pretty but haven't we seen this design before?

Nick's dress is really pretty and perfect for the event, I thought.

You read my mind. That's one of my favorite parts of the dress.

Great dresses. Nick's is my favorite. I love the back!

Uncle Nick's designs have always struck me as very "Red Carpet Magic: BHS Junior Prom 2003," but damn if I don't love that black-and-white dress! And whatsherface who's wearing it rocks it way harder than the runway model...just goes to show what a pair of boobies and some double-stick tape can do.

Love, love, love Nick's dress!! Very appropriate for the event.
Not crazy about Jack's gown, but I have sure seen worse on the red carpet!

Uncle Nick's dress is pretty amazing and great for a summertime red-carpet event. I'd never guess it came from our own darling of the red-carpet, Ucle Nick. You must admit, the man has found his niche, both as a designer of red-carpet gowns and celebrity commentator of the events.

Like kanani said in her post, Jack's dress is a bit too, "Ariel" (sings "Under the Sea") for the red-carpet. Beautiful color, but there seems to be too much going on with this dress. It might've worked better on one of the girls for PR4's, "What A Girl Wants" episode(aka the prom challenge).

Gah! Everybody's in my head today!! Missing black linings, coffee filters, iridescent fabric, oily complexions, loving Nick's dress, merely liking Jack's!!!

I'm going to go put my alumninum foil beanie cap on now.

Love Nick's black and white dress. Look at everything that is right: the plunge in front and in back, the way the dress fits, the black banding.

Oh, wait, that is what was WRONG with the Debra Messing dress. Nick got it right. Debra was a "miss" in my book and this makes it all the more obvious.

Love how you boys keep finding more dresses to show us!

When I first saw the sketches of Jack's design, I thought "Wow - looks just like Chloe's skating costume for Sasha Cohen" - except longer of course.

I love Uncle Nick's, but Jack's, despite creative use of print, bores me. It just seems like I've seen it done before (and better several times).

On the red carpet, where catching the eye and attention of the crowd is key, Nick's does the job and Jack's is a just a decently pretty dress.

Very tasteful (in a good way) from Nick. Thumbs up. And, yeah, never woulda guessed.

For some reason the fabric on Jack's dress looks chip (I know, that's getting old); I'm sure it's not, but it looks too shiny. Maybe better in person.

Love love love Nick's dress!! Jacks is cute too....great summer color.

They didn't call her "The Queen" for nothing! Barbara all the way!

Nick's is okay for me, but I don't love it. Jack's has been done before and could have been lovely but the color clashes with the red carpet and something about the fabric or execution makes it a little too wrinkly.

I love Nick's dress. It's fresh and pretty.
Jack's is OK. The fabric is really beautiful.

Why isn't it his fault? Do Jack get a special TLo pass or am I missing the point here?

Nick's dress is a nice change of pace and Ms hennig looks much better in it than the runway model

I keep going back and forth on Jack''s dress. It looks better in the sketch to me for some reason. It definitely looks a little messy especially around the bust. I wish it looked cleaner there, not quite as ruffly

However I like the color and the idea of the design I think is a good one The burnout print is not overpowering.

It dawned on me the execution is a little off and lacking in thought. It seems like he cut the fabric in an indiscriminate manner. We seem to be getting an erratic pattern because of it of the floral part. There does not seem to be enough symmetry and we do not get enough of an overall pattern like in the sketch.

I know he would have ended up using 3x much fabric if he tried better line up the layers but I think it would have been a more impressive gown. Oh well at least he's out there.

I really really like the Nick dress. I would totally wear that!

Loving Nick's dress. Jack's dress? Not so much...

Both women look beautiful, and I think the different styling of each dress works for each of them. The hair styling is spot on, as are the choices for earrings and purses. Love that Jack (that is Jack, isn't it?) matched his tie color to Heather's dress.

I like the Nick dress better than his usual "goddess" gown. The print is different and the back is very nice.
I love love love Jack's dress. One of the best red carpet looks this season.

Huh?

Some UGLY dresses on the red carpet but these two did well. I particularly love Nick's. At least is not satin or chiffon like every dress we see today on the red carpet.

I agree, this year wasn't the best for the ladies. I like Nick's dress A LOT, especially the back, and considering that it was hot as hell that day, it was perfect for the occasion.

Shelley Hennig looked like $1 million. When she walked she just flowed like a graceful swan. Congratulations, Nick!!

Jack's dress reminds me of Chloe's figure skating challenge dress.

As for Uncle Nick, he always thinks of all the angles, so anyone wearing his dresses on the red carpet can give great poses from all angles.

I love love love Nick's dress, I'd wear that in a heartbeat. Jack's dress is too mermaidish looking for my taste.

UNCLE NICK ROCKS!!!

Nick's description of the dress on his blog:

"It is a full-length Stretch Cotton Sateen printed gown, featuring puffy cap sleeves, plunging neckline and an open back, with a small dramatic pleated train in the back. It also has "hidden" side front pockets, which Shelley LOVED!!!!"

I love Nick : )

I don't like the bodice of Jack's dress, but I love the color. It looks very much like Chloe's dress down to the color. I wonder if someone said something to him.

Heather looks great. The dress is beautiful, it looks beautiful on her, it's body-conscious but not tight.

PhantomMinuet said...

I actually like both dresses. How is this possible?

Anonymous said...

I'm in the minority here.
Am not really impressed with the Nick dress. Silk kimono type dresses & tunics with that solid trim have been around for quite a while now (at least where i live) & I'm tired of the look.

I actually like Jack's dress, even though it's normally not my kind of thing. I think the wearer (whoever she is) is working it beautifully, & it fits especially nicely on her upper body. Both women are perfectly styled.

LOVE Jack's dress and I don't even like this type of dress.

TheNYCourier said...

You're right; Jack's dress is fussy.

In fact, since it's a look that's been done so many times before, it doesn't necessarily strengthen or variate the design by giving it such a flaw.

Shelley Hennig looks amazing, better than the model. That dress is so cute, that dress belongs in my closet.

I love how the florals on Jack's dress appear in a non-traditional blue color. She looks amazing! Great job, Jack!

Jack's dress was the best dress EVER on the red carpet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, can I say something? Jeff Lewis...how can you resist? was this discussed somewhere and I missed it? Flipping out for me is right there just behind PR I LOVE that train wreck!

Love Nick's dress. Except for the color, hate Jack's. Poorly done, and it makes her look zaftig.

I love Nicks dress. Great print, a fabulous back and she looks gorgeous in it.
Jack's dress is blah.
