Patricia Field for Payless

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 by
Darlings, the very first guest judge Project Runway ever had (and the stylist from Sex and the City that launched a million fabric flowers), Pat Field, recently unveiled her shoe collection for Payless.

"Payless ShoeSource and Patricia Field today announced the launch of an exclusive capsule collection designed by Field, renown for her work as stylist on the Sex & the City® TV series and an Oscar® nominee for her costume designs for "The Devil Wears Prada." The collection is available beginning this week in select stores and Payless.com for $25 to $35 an item. The Patricia Field for Payless™ Summer Collection is Patricia’s second capsule collection for the retailer."

"For my second collection for Payless I was inspired to continue the strong metallic theme, layering on bright colors including electric blue, sleek silver and sunny gold with sparkle and high-shine detailing," said Field. "I love what Payless is doing to make fashion democratic, and I am excited to be a part of that movement. I draw much inspiration from my global travels to major fashion capitals including Tokyo and Sao Paulo, among the standards. On the global front, color and pop-glamour are key -- I am excited to bring shoppers these global interpretations in my Payless summer collection."

Umm...these are hideous. And chip in a chip way. And....that's about all we can say about that.
Sorry, Pat.

In related SATC news, T Lo finally saw the movie and if you head on over to the T Lo blog, you can find out what we thought of it.

You should have warned us to grab our sunglasses before reading this post. Now my retinas are burned.

Chip you would expect, it's Payless afterall....But boring from Pat Field- Unforgivable!!

Ew.

"They're glamorous looking"

Is she kidding me??

Oh, come now. We should all strive to be as "democratic" as Pat Fields, Payless and SJP (lol).

I like Patricia Fields, but I'll definitely pass on this collection. I haven't checked out my local Payless, but I did see them featured recently on television. Something about them actually catch my attention. I typically don't go for chip metallic pumps, but the thong-style silver sandal was actually kind of cute.

Mmmm... Not my style. I've tried Payless' shoes and they kill my feet, so even if I liked them, I wouldn't be tempted.

Mom said...

Wow. I really, really, really don't like the looks of those shoes. In fact, just looking at them is giving me pinky-toe blisters right this very minute.

Lilithcat said...

Not fabulous. The pumps are, well, just pumps. But the sandals! Even muu-muu wearing blue-haired ladies in Miami would decline to wear those sandals!

I think Pat Field is a great stylist but definitely not a designer.

They kind of take the Patricia Field out of Patricia Field. I don't see anything that hasn't been seen before - except not at Patricia Field. Anyone who's ever hung around in Greenwich Village knows this is more like it:

Fashion isn't necessarily democratic because it's cheap.
Oh...don't get me started...
I really hate the way people misuse that term.

TheNYCourier said...

They're not THAT ugly....for payless, anyway. There's a large market for hooker shoes!

Anonymous said...

Headache-inducing chip ickiness.

No fizz, no glamour, no style, no funk, no fun. Bleh.

Chip, chip, chip like everyone already said.

But as long as they come in size 11or 12, they will make some Halloween boys-dressed-as-girls very happy. Payless is my go-to store for shoes when I have dress in drag for Halloween (or some other occassion). I'm only gonna wear them once, and it's all for a laugh, so I might as well pay as little as possible for them.

Over the years at PayLess, I have found silver slingbacks when we were 'surprise' bridesmaids at a friend's committment ceremony, black pumps for when I was Jackie Kennedy in mourning, gold sparkle platforms to ring in the new millennium, navy pumps when I got my Dad in drag in a MOB gown, and rust colored MaryJane's when I was Velma from Scooby Doo. All to fit Mens size 10 feet and generally for less than $15.

But at that price point, Pat's gonna have to move a lot of ugly shoes to make any money for PayLess.

I actually saw the electric blue shoes in Payless the other day, and they didn't look glamorous, just tacky and cheap.

Anonymous said...

LOL!!

love how you set it up to knock it down.

I hate shiny shoes.

Anonymous said...

They're hideous, they look like something you'd buy for Halloween or something.

Anonymous said...

Payless is awesome for when you want cute shoes but in no way want to spend a lot of money on them.

Anonymous said...

Why is it that when designers decide to design something more affordable for the masses they forget style and taste?

tehkou said...

Yeah, well, those are... uh... definitely Payless shoes. I mean, if "Payless" is a style, those shoes really fit that style.

Emma P. said...

Yuck.
Like Bill said, maybe a cheap buy for Halloween/Drag Performances.
That's it.
What's w/ the round toe? That's so 1995.
I was hoping for more Mizrahi for Target, got more Star Jones for Payless.

Kanani said...

Well, let's put it this way.
In the future if one googles "cheap hooker shoes," Patricia Field's name will come up #1 on the list!

Anonymous said...

Hey! We've got a Payless out here! Right between The Fashion Bug and Discount Smokes.

This stuff ain't my style, but I love the notion of locals wearing Pat Fields!

Don't blame Pat too much. Can you imagine how many suits at Payless gave input from design to production. This stuff must be way watered down.

The empress sandals are not THAT bad. I could make them work : )

Anonymous said...

I actually don't mind metallic shoes when paired with the right dress and attitude, but these are plain the and colors are hideous.

DolceLorenzo said...

Darlings, even my hooker friends wouldn't want that. It's all about the Louboutins now.

Anonymous said...

The socialite (????) clutch looks like something you'd buy on Canal Street from the vendors.

Anonymous said...

like others have said -- "It's PAYLESS" -- what does one expect for $10?

OK, Bill -- you need to post some pix of you in your payless shoes, complete with costume.....they sound hilarious --- you always give us such a great laugh!

Ms Sangrail said...

OMG. Those are awful!

The taste level is just not there...

I freely confess to buying cheap sandals, since I completely destroy them by the end of summer, but those are just shiteous.

Chip, chip, chip.

That was Pat Field's original market. If you ever shopped at her, long since gone, boutique on 8th Street you'd remember all those shoes. I remember the first time I went in there, looking at the shoes and wondering why they were all so big. Took me a while to realize it was because they were for men.

But these shoes are totally dullsville.

It's a sad, sad day when even the drag queens have gone down-market. This is the final confirmation that we truly are in a recession.

Democratic? Oy. I feel the need for a new bumper sticker:

'I have taste, and I vote'.

In 20 short years, Pat Fields shoes have gone full circle: From outfitting the feet of The Fabulous waiting on line outside the hottest clubs in NYC, to outfitting the feet of The Shleppers waiting on line for the early bird special outside Boca Raton.

I don't think 25-35 dollars for plastic shoes is paying much less.

And they're boring.

Besides looking cheap, these somehow manage to look garish and dowdy at the same time.

And to think that only a few years ago I wondered exactly who purchased those (very few styles) 11-13 sizes. I can see Payless execs now, trying to figure out how to target this particular demographic for their advertising.

Hoi, now. Some women have feet in those sizes too, thankyouverymuch.

Alicia said...

Sadly, I kinda like them. But I know I have a thing for tacky metallic shoes. And I love rounded toe pumps. So put them together an no matter how hideous they are, I'll feel a strange attraction for them. Hopefully next time I go by Payless my size will be typically under-stocked (5 1/2, one step up from needed to shop in children's) and I can avoid brining these home.

right on alicia, I only like the disco ball flats. I could wear them walking to my dance studio!

It is sooo true!

And, Bill, I want to see those pictures of your costume, too. Will give me some ideas for Dear Hubby!

As for these shoes, I can just hear them clacking across laminated wood-like flooring!

er, i mean...Thank the fashion gods!! Oh praise be! what would we poor middle American souls do without the democratic charity of Saint Pat and her choir? We'd surely be bereft, wandering about with WalMart pillowcases for clothes and ziploc bags on our feet!! All honor upon her who deigns to mercifully give us tiny doses of true taste!

Joanie said...

Honestly, I'm thrilled there wasn't a strict roman sandal or flower to be found in the entire bunch. I can live with all the shimmer and shine. It's summer.

Anonymous said...

The only thing I would buy at Payless would be some cheap tennies to scruff around the garden. Maybe Pat can come up with some metallic tennies!

Undoubtedly made by slave and/or child labor in some third world hellhole.

I've never been a big fan of Pat's taste, but is it possible the old bat actually went blind before designing these? That would explain so much...

If I were to close my eyes and picture metallic payless shoes these would be the first things to pop into my mind.

Tackarific blister city!

Bittybis said...

And if these didn't look bad enough to begin with, they would most assuredly be trashed after one or two wearings, with the chip metallic sheen peeling off. I might buy them for a costume, as others have observed, and since that's Ms. Field's thing, I guess it makes sense.

Anonymous said...

I agree that the shoes are ugly but..

Don't keep dissing Payless everybody!
Not everyone can afford to go to Nordstrom's to buy heels! Payless is good for finding a simple black heel that is priced cheap. And also shoes for costumes because most of their shoes are ridiculous except the few I mentioned before.

But again, the shoes are pitifully uninspired and chip. Payless probably just got them because they finally got a "designer" to make shoes for the store.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, tehkou. No offense. I, myself do not have dainty size five feet. I'm a whopping 8 1/2!

P.S.
Personally, I don't buy Payless shoes for myself (I'll admit I'm a big ol' snob) but, they are great for kids when they're at that stage of development when they grow out of their shoes at the blink of an eye. Payless also carries super-cheap shoe care products like those spongy things that shine all shades of leather.

tehkou said...

It's okay Edina. No offense taken! At size 11, I'm just on the cusp of being able to buy stylish shoes, though I don't get quite the selection I'd like all the time.

(Although I will say one thing for having monster feet -- when it comes to outlet malls and sales, my size is always in stock!)

My poor mom's a size 12 though, which unfortunately doesn't give her much of a choice outside of Payless, Wal-Mart, and the like. At least that I've seen.

The "Nordstrom Rack", Saks Fifth Avenue's "Off Fifth"and Nieman's discount places (can't remember the name) have shoes of SUBSTANTIALLY better quality for the same price and PLENTY in the range for those of us with Larger UNDERstandings !!!

Why would people buy crap when they can have real quality ?

Pat Fields true colors shined thru.

PS: I bought a pair of GUCCI loafers at the Saks Outlet for $65 (reg price $315) !!!

To Bill:

Hey. You got a problem with size 11 and 12s? You know, some of us girls who were that size already go through soooo much in life because of the size of our gigantic feet and don't take kindly to being compared to drag queens (no matter how fierce they are).

*sobs*

Bill said...

Oh juunanagou18, I have no problem at all with larger size women's feet! If it weren't for you gals, I never would have found the MaryJanes to be Velma to my niece's Daphne and my nephews' Freddie and Shaggy.

btw, does the "big feet, big..." maxim hold true for women as well?

Anonymous said...

Pat, lay off the cigs. You sound like my nana in Boca.

These plastic shoes would be fab with my Vera Wang for Kohl's skirt, Nicole Miller for JC Penney shirt and Mizrahi for Target bag and my Proenza Schouler for Target jacket.

Oh, if only Heatherette would do a little somethin'-somethin' for Wal-Mart.

Anonymous said...

Also, i must agree with Anonymous @ 9:58.

Why all the hate on Payless? Some of us have champagne taste on beer budgets, and we have to do what we can to make it work. i live in a town with nary a Macy's, much less a Nordstrom (or it's Rack). Payless doesn't make high quality shoes, but it has its place in my closet, its employees are always kind and the store is always clean. Pipe down, snobs!

tehkou said...

No hate on Payless here. I'm glad they exist as an option. Like I said, they're one of the only places you can buy shoes at all if you happen to be in the 12+ range.

But you have to admit, quality-wise, it is one of those cases where you get what you pay for. 'sall. And I say this as someone who has bought a lot of their shoes.

The only pairing I can picture is with the girl who wears her Payless heels with short shorts and a tube top for summer. Its THAT kind of style (read: not mine). This isn't cheap shoe hate. Its a dislike of the tacky, no matter the price.

Taylor said...

i guess i have horrible taste but i bought the metallic bright blue round toe heels. i love metallic blue and round toes, so there. they're going to go perfect with my nu-rave club kid outfits. i ruin shoes dancing so hard anyway, so $35 is perfect. even my gay boyfriend said they were babely.

Those shoes. Those colors. It's like a neverending nightmare!

I wonder if Thailand was one of Pat's destination stops.

People were telling me that I must shop in Thailand because of the unbelievable prices. They forgot to mention the clothes were cheap because they were chip! chip! chip!

The trend there was gaudy metallic. Let's not forget how close they are to the equator. The sun pours down with a vengence. My eyes... they were... are burning!

yuck--
they look like everything else at Payless-
and at that price point they will fall apart with 3 good weeks of wear.
A co-worker of mine always buys her shoes there and she has such problems with her feet and back, plus she has slipped and fallen several times. It isn't all the shoes, but it is a major factor.

Anonymous said...

OK the shoes are gross. BUT payless isn't that bad, good for buying cute cheap shoes. Some one said that they got shoes off Nordstrom's rack for $65, but that still can be a big buy for some of us even if it is "off the rack". Payless is nice for people who really need to pay less.

Anonymous said...

These are FUG with the cap toe. I have found cute shoes at Target AND Payless and I would touch these even if there were at Nordstrom's. For $35 I can find much, much, much better shoes.
