Project Runway on the Red Carpet

Thursday, May 08, 2008 by
Those PR bitches have been churning it out lately. First up:

Thea Gill at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center's Women's Night at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood, California in a Nikolaki original.

It's pretty. The paillettes in the diamond pattern save it from being an ordinary dress and give it just enough glam without going too over the top.

Next up, the Raminator, who's been all over the place lately.

Michelle Krusiec attends the Premiere Of Fox's What Happens In Vegas at the Mann Village Theatre in Los Angeles.

Look familiar? Here:

This was from the runway show held at the Lincoln Center to kick off Season 4.

It's attention-getting, which is just what you want for the red carpet. But it's a bit too stiff and shiny for us.

EDITED TO ADD:

Sometimes it takes a fabulous bitch who knows how to wear it to make it look good. Ladies and ladies, we give you Miss Dita Von Teese working the SHIT out of it and looking spectacular.

Nazanin Boniadi at the Iron Man premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Now this one MUST look familiar to you. If it doesn't, turn in your Project Runway Fan Club badge:

Sorry, but we don't like this one either. We don't like what it does to her hips and the bodice looks sloppy.

The Nik dress is okay.

Rami's dresses actually make the wearer look way too skinny. The wearer doesn't look glamorous or even luxe. It appears as if their clothes are barely hanging on and they've been shortchanged in the yardage --I'll just call it waif couture.

1. I have no idea who that woman is, but she is gorgeous. And she makes an ok dress look fantastic.

2. Looks like a costume for a cocktail waitress in the movie version of the Jetsons.

3. Agreed. His clothes often have a sloppy-busy feel to them. I'm just not a Kashou nut. And her shoes are horrible. They look orthopedic.

The Nik gown, I vote thumbs up. The woman is wearing the dress, not the other way around, and she is styled beautifully.

The Raminator dresses ... I think they are making these women look chip. Chip in a chip way.

Not loving any of these. The second one would be great for a Reynolds Wrap commercial.

Nick:Nick doesn't really cover any new ground, but what he does he does very well. She looks beautiful in that dress, everything is right about it.
Rami:Dress 1.I think the lampshade skirted dress looks better on the more petite actress than the model. Perfect for a Las Vegas premiere.
Dress 2.I think the bandeau bodice on the PR version is more flattering. The corset is a bit busy. But I love the drape in the back, It is provocative without being vulgar. I do think Rami's dresses are perfect for her.

Call me out of touch, but I've never heard of any of these women.

I thought the first woman was Renee Russo with a new face.

Those last two dresses were FUG to the UGH.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Who's Nikolai -- Uncle Nick? The dress certainly doesn't break new ground, but Thea Gill looks lovely. (Who is she, by the way?)

I don't get Rami. He's capable of such sophistication and taste, and yet he turns out these minis that look both amateur and immature. And then people wear them! As for the second look, I agree with Sewing Siren that the PR version's bodice is better than this one. The color, too, for that matter.

Anonymous said...

The colour on the third one is aweful. In theory I like the first dress, but the diamond pattern does nothing for the woman's figure.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Bill said, Call me out of touch, but I've never heard of any of these women. I thought the first woman was Renee Russo with a new face.

And I thought it was Teri Hatcher with new hair. Welcome to my world, Out of Touch!

Althought the Niko dress isn't very complicated or inventive, Thea looks utterly fabulous in it, and what more could a woman want from a red carpet gown? And is it me, or does she just get more and more beautiful as time goes by?

Michelle's dress just looks cheap, and the color of the third dress is completely wrong on Nazanin. She's a pretty woman, but that dress makes her look like she had live disease.

Bill:

I can help on the first woman--Thea Gill played a lesbian and the mother of Brian Kinney's **coughassholecough** child on "Queer As Folk". :-) Isn't she lovely?

Lilithcat said...

1. Very glam, perfect red carpet gown, and it fits her like a glove.

2. No, no! You wear the aluminum foil on your head to block the X-rays the government is aiming at you!

3. The bodice looks too small (and I don't like the "wear your corset outside" look), and I really dislike the partially bare midriff and the back cut to her ass.

(Bill, Brooklyn Bomber, I never heard of any of them, either. Shall we form a club?)

LOVE the Nikolaki dress!

Meh on Rami's first, just ew on the second. What is up with him and color?

Bill, when YOU haven't heard of a celebrity...LOL.

I like the first dress, hate the second one, kind of like the third one; she wore it well.

Rami's dress on Nazanin B. just doesn't quite do it for me. Maybe it's the color, or her super waif-like appearance, but it looks way too saggy and not at all sexy. And don't get me started on the shoes and purse with the dress. I know
my trends, and the shoes, purse and bangle are all current, but they just look very "off" to my eyes.

I do think she should've gone with a more delicate shoe or sandal and a smaller purse/clutch. Oh, and you might as well toss out the heavy wooden bangle while you're at it. In short, the look was not very well thought out or put together by her stylist. Just because they're all individually "of the moment" does not mean they should necessarily be all worn together for one look.

Lurve Nick's dress.

But that tan number, of Rami's, just does not fit the wearer (especially the cups). Having baggy cups is soooo demoralizing. And the way the back fits makes it look like your butt crack will be playing peek-a-boo all night.

Bill said...

thanks, phantomminuet! Now I recognize her - Lidsay and Melanie, right?

I lost track of QAF after 2 or 3 seasons.

And I was all about Chris Potter and Robert Gant on that show anyway.

Uncle Nick's gown was perfect for the red carpet.

On the second dress by the Raminator, I just don't get his penchant for these less than flattering colors.

Yup. And I was all about Robert, my own self. ;-)

I agree that the 1st one (uncle nick's) was not unusual, but it is really quite lovely -- and it fits her beautifully. the pattern of the paillettes really does give it an elegance on an otherwise plain dress. I like it alot

as for the rami designs -- he is capable of much more beautiful things -- that silver one has the same wierd thing going on in the skirt where it kind of flips up at the bottom as it had on the runway -- was that intentional or did he just not bother to fix it?

the gold-ish one is just plain fug. i did like it better in the eggplant that he used in the finale, but i wasn't crazy about that one either. also, as for the shoes -- those look like the same fugly shoes (in a different color) that he kept using all season. heavy, clunky and orthopedic looking -- they don't look any better in black.

Joanie said...

Rami's dresses do nothing for me or the women wearing them in these photos, but Nick's...ahhhh...I loooove it!

Emma P. said...

Uncle Nick is such a class act!
His gown reflect that fact.
I actually rooted for Rami to win PR4, but considering his red carpet outfits I was as wrong as 2 left shoes. The colors on both dresses are incredibly unflattering (at least in photos)-- the 1st looks like a Reynolds Wrap promotional stunt, the 2nd color & style looks like someone had a baby puke their peas on fabric, shut the babies eyes and had the kid wrap it around the woman.
Rami, pls, do something else. Soon. You think we're fickle, your sales base will dry up fast if they think they're all getting the same thing from you. Trust me.

Mary said...

The color on the last dress is AWFUL.

I love Nick's dress.

Rami's first dress was eyecatching on the red carpet, but I immediately thought, "What challenge was this for? The aluminum foil challenge?" I'm impressed only if he was limited to crazy materials and given 2 hours to make it.

Rami's second dress makes me think of cabbage.

I'm going to have to be president of the Out Of Touch club with everyone else! And like brooklyn bomber, I thought Teri Hatcher'd gone blonde!

Anonymous said...

"Thea Louise Gill, .... is a Canadian actress best known for her starring role as Lindsay Peterson on the hit Showtime show Queer as Folk."

OK, I never saw that show and I don't know her. But she looks great in the dress.

But MUST they make them wear the yellow plastic bracelet? Is it to keep out the unwashed masses from the event, or is she just returning from a cruise around the carnival midaway?

Anonymous said...

Nick might not be reinventing the wheel, but his look is classic with a glitz twist. Rami is already becoming a caricature of himself, with the draping looking slap dash and unflattering to the women who are wearing his mini length high-end ruched shower wraps. Doesn't he realize he is creating a 'one trick pony' reputation as a designer that will ultimately turn-off women OTHER than the petite 20-30 year olds he seems to be courting?

Anonymous said...

You know what? I didn't care for it on the runway or on the pseudo-starlet, but Dita makes it work. I guess it just takes boobs.

"Bill said...

Forgot to say, 'Me either, Bill' Think about it: it is also not a very heartening 'recommendation' for that designer's future success. On the flip side, even I know the people that PPS is designing for. Telling, very telling...

I really like the first dress, I think it looks lovely on What's-Her-Name.

As for the Rami dresses, the only nice thing I can really say is that the third dress makes Who's-Her-Face's butt look great.

And since that's the only nice thing I can say, that's all I'm a-gonna say.

Dita Von Teese looks fantastic in the lampshade dress. He should use her as a house model/muse. I have seen her in several of his designs, and no one looks better in them than her.

I didn't know any of them either but they are hardly "A" list celebs also I'm kind of old. I did recognize Thea but I had to imdb her to remember that she was in Queer as Folk.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

The Dita picture is great, but it's posed studio shot, so of course it's got a better chance of looking good.

I still can't look at the bodice of that dress without getting all misty for the pre-microwave era, when Jiffy Pop was the only game in town.

Anonymous said...

Dita Von Teese is friggin gorgeous. Of course she can rock that dress!

I like the Nik dress. The others are FEH.

Anonymous said...

Nick is a perfect red carpet designer. That dress is lovely, stands out, is on trend with metallics and as someone else pointed out, is being worn by the actress I also previously had never heard of, instead of the other way around. (Follow that?)

The Rami collection: Dita looks spectacular in that dress, and I think it's really not so bad on everyone else either.

The Runway-revised dress? Not so much. It made a stick-thin lovely actress (apparently) look like she had a love handle. Hard to do. I agree with everyone who likes the back, and again, wonder if the guy is actually colorblind.

I could see Rami doing a line for Chicos or Travel Outfitters -- they are forever using those heinous shades.

Anonymous said...

like the first couple, but that last Rami dress is friggin awefull. The color is nausiating and her choice of shoes really just puts this into fugly town.

Gorgeous Things said...

I feel utterly provincial, but I have never heard of any of these women. I like Uncle Nick's dress. Rami's all leave me cold, and I HATE the skirt on the silver dress. That said, you're right - Dita works that like no one's business!

Mom said...

I like Nick's dress -- it's lovely in a simple, understated way.

As for Rami's dresses, no. The first one should have been his entry in the Hershey's challenge as a giant Hershey's Kiss, although yes, Dita works it -- in a still photo. I don't think it would work, even on her, in motion. And the second one also highlights what I find problematic about most of his work: They tend to make women's legs look awful! It's something about where the hemline hits the leg and the bulging swell of fabric above the hemline.

Zoë Malachi said...

never been a fan of the nude fabric, but nick makes it work. and the styling is perfect: casual yet sophisticated—props to her crew! (and while she might look somewhat like teri hatcher, methinks thea gill is much more lovely and natural-looking)

as for the rami’s…sigh. he took a cute, petite actress and made her look stiff and shapeless (almost like a hapless extra from star trek—just paint the girl green and give her a blond beehive already). and that dress on nazanin: yet another lovely actress made to look shapeless and saggy all over. not to mention how ill-proportioned it makes her look—who wants to appear to have a two-inch torso?

Nick's is ok.

Rami's are awful. The color of the last dress is just beyond bad.

Dita von Teese, on the other hand, knows where to get a good boob job and how to make it work.

Dita Von Teese would be a fantastic guest judge.

I freaking LOVE HER!!! She also doesn't have that tacky bow around her waist.

The Nik gown is beautiful. I love it.
As for Rami's pieces of rag bag and pantry remnants....NON!!!!
However, Dita Von Teese really knows how to work an ugly dress.
She is gorgeous.

"Sloppy" is right, that last Rami Dress makes her look like she has love handles! I do like the silver number though and like you guys said it just takes the right person to wear it. I would prefer to ahve seen Nik's dress from farther away there is something "cheap" about it that I can't put my finger on.

Kasey said...

One more thing I'm floored that Rungay readers don't know who Thea Gill is. Before the "L Word" there was Thea Gill as one half of a Lesbian couple on "Queer as Folk" Damn I miss that show!

Anonymous said...

Love Nick's dress! I think she looks great.

Rami seems to be fishing out old looks a lot more lately. He says he can do construction, but this metallic dress looked like he used construction paper instead, or aluminum foil. Dita does work it better.

And I just can't love his color taste. The third dress doesn't have a very good color, especially for her, and it seems to wash her out. The fit of it is up for debate.

I worship Dita and the stilleto's she walks on!

The tin foil dress looks like it was Rami's entry in the "Judy Jetson Makeover" challenge. Horrid. Dita makes it look interesting, but that photo is more about Dita than what she has covering her voluptuous body.

Uncle Nick did a terrific job. Without the paillettes, that dress is booooorrrring. But the pattern perks it up and makes it so much more interesting.

I can't put enough hate on the last dress. It can't be easy to make an anorexic waif look like she's carrying 20 extra pounds around the middle, but somehow Rami managed. That color is wrong on so many levels. My eyes hurt.

Milla said...

The Nicolaki is kind of lovely in a Vintage Jackie-O Valentino kind of way.
The first Rami is only good on Dita.
But that is because Dita nakes ANYTHING including a washcloth look amazing.
The second Rami?
Whatever...
Nick is awesome, Malan is awesome and Jeff Sebellia is pretty rocking. I love the things that Chris March, Austin Scarlett and Jay can do.
The rest of them?
Great stitchers but otherwise...
I have not been impressed thus far.

I love Uncle Nick.

I'm not such a fan of Rami because I keep thinking about what he COULD do and then he goes and does...that.

I'm giving him a pass on being repetitive right now because I'm thinking it's likely that he was asked for looks he'd already shown. (That's the point of runway shows, right? People see what you can do and the rich commission clothing along those lines?)

Although I'm giggling imagining the phone call that produced that last dress. "Yes, Rami? I looooved that purple dress you did on the show. Could you make one for me? But I'd really prefer it in more of a vomit color, and poorly fitted, if you would please. Thanks!"

"kana said: Dita Von Teese would be a fantastic guest judge."

Yes....yes....yes!!!! The challenge could be to design a burlesque outfit. Hey, they had lingerie, figure skating, and wrestling divas....all of which are burlesque-ish.

I'm tired of Rami and his draping of ugly-colored fabric. Find a collaborator who ISN'T colorblind. Stop making women's boobs look ugly. And figure out where to put a hem so it's flattering!

Anonymous said...

Dita Von Teese looks great. I am sure the clothes pins pulling the bottom half of the dress tight around her ass (from an angle the photograph didn't catch) is what did the trick. Leave it to a great photographer to make a so-so dress fantastic.

Anonymous said...

Nik's dress is just the right amount of everything. Classy, but fun and sparkly. Whereas, Rami's looks like he's been sniffing glue and then smoking a joint.

At least the left boob is getting attention! Rami has no concept of a good hemline. Also, I couldn't tell if the back was low slung or if there was fabric hugging her rear.
