In or Out: Nina Garcia

La Nina visited the offices of Mode Magazine in last night's Ugly Betty in a Proenza Schouler vest:

The vest is from their Spring 2008 safari-inspired collection and has been widely praised and worn by People In The Know. We have to say, we're not crazy about it on the model...

...but Nina works the SHIT out of it. Sure, it tends to widen the hips, but on tiny little fashionistas who know how to wear it, we think it's a pretty chic look. Definitely IN.

  1. She looks good. I don't love the vest, but it looks right on her.

  2. The vest - feh.

So what was the story with chica's makeup, especially the eyes? She looked totally washed out.

  3. I'm not as appalled by the vest as I am with the heinous 80's puffy shoulder throwback blouse worn by Rebecca Romaine Lettuce. Bad idea then, bad idea now.

  4. From the front, she looks wide curtesy of the vest, from the side, it looks sleek and she looks petite. Great pants.

She looked a bit tired though....either that or the make up work isn't the best.

  5. I kind of like the vest but I think you have to be uber skinny to pull that look off. It's a bit wider around the hip, no?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Definitely IN. I want that vest!!!

  7. whoa! hold the phone! Rebecca Whats-her-name has some kinda GROWTH on her shoulders! ack! oh wait....it's supposed to look like that.....oh ok. Phew! For a minute there I was worried!

    hee!

  8. I don't like it paired with the dress, but it looks very cute with nothing underneath and pants. She looks great!

Rebecca is supposed to look like that, over the top.

  9. The vest itself-ick.

More ick is Rebecca. Put on some color, girl! Barring that, fire your gays.

  10. I LOVE this vest over the dress. Gorgeous! Nina looks great, I also like the hair and makeup. It's simple and elegant.

  11. Was everyone in that scene (other than Nina) wearing the latest from PPS??

PPS was cute....but not fierce...but then that may be so passe.

  12. I think the vest looks good on Nina, everything doesn't have to be about looking as narrow through the hips as possible.
It is interesting that she didn't wear Christian, as the Mode (Alex and the fashion victim receptionist) characters did.
I thought both Christian and Nina did a good job acting, but I don't think Christian is being guided in the right direction if he is serious about a career in fashion design.

  13. I like the vest better than the extravaganza of puff that Rebecca Romaijn is wearing.

  14. She looks cute!!

    Te amo, Nina!

  15. I hate the vest, I hate the idea of women wearing vests. It's way too masculine looking.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's La Nina! She's the epitome of "make it work." I LOVE HER!

  17. The vest looks great ON NINA. I always love Proenza Schouler, but the spring 2008 colletion feels too military.

  18. Proenza Schouler are teaming up with Target. I can't wait to see their collection for Target!!!

Only real skinny bitches can wear Princess' clothes.

  20. A-men ladies!! Senora Garcia looks professional, chic and stylish. She's just all around fab.

  21. Agreed, Nina IN and Romaine Lettuce OUT.

But it wasn't the vest that won me over, but her HAIR.

Silky, smooth, shiny ... and no noticeable fly aways like on PR.

She and her stylist get major points.

La Nina is skinny bitch personified.

I think it has to do with the lighting on PR, not her hair.

    In, she's gorgeous.

  26. IN. IN. IN.
    I love La Bitch Nina!

  27. Lovelovelove the vest. Nina looked good in it. However, I, too, noticed her lack of or badly applied makeup on Betty last night. Also loved Beck Newton's extravagana of puff blouse by Christian. But, poor Rebecca did not fare so well in her look. Ugh.

Rebecca Romaine Lettuce: HaH!!! Good one, anonymous (9:57)

Thanks for the heads up, tokyodoll!
Proenza Schuler at Target. OMG. There's going to be a riot for sure.

  28. Nina is definitely in, she always looks fabulous - well, with the exception of that hideous yellow dress - but more importantly, when is Princess going to get busy if you know what I mean?

No, I don't know what you mean. He won a hundred thousand dollars two months ago. Are you suggesting he should have a fully realized clothing line based on that?

I'm suggesting that he do less crap like this

    www.gaiaonline.com/prom

and start focusing on a real collection and real buyers. That's all, you may retract your claws now, dear.

    ak! That's scary, confusing
    and ultimately kind of sad.

  33. What is her favorite comment? You need to edit?

She's right. She edited and it looked fabulous. You could barely see the vest on the model with the overlay. Edit that out and its a great peice of clothing.

How do you know he's not focusing on a real collection and real buyers? Are you privy to that sort of information? And by the way, "crap" like that earns him publicity and probably more money to invest in his line.

I'm not the one here with the claws out, "dear."

Well, I'm glad you stopped by to clear things up, Princess (family member, boyfriend, assistant, publicist or whoever you are).

    ReplyDelete
  36. Nina looked amazing, I love the vest, and Christian was hilarious with his "worship me, bitches" line. He's very comfortable on camera. I wish they had showed a little more of him and La Nina.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Vest = FUGLY
    Christian = FEROSH

Princess is shooting straight to the top and I couldn’t be happier for him!!

How tired. Never met the guy, not affiliated with him in any way. I just think you were being appallingly judgmental based on no information whatsoever.

Can't help noticing you didn't answer my question, either.

  39. Argument people:
    Please stop--you're hurting my head!!

  40. Just barely in. It looks okay on her, but that color is too cold for me, need warmth.

In any event, better than the puffy-sleeved black blouse standing next to her. really don't like that one.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I like the side view of the vest on her better. The front looks like "Yes, Reginald, I shall take my tea on the patio, SKIM MILK PLEASE thank you daaahling."
Basically, it looks like she's going to play a game of whist... and is that the look she really wants to achieve??

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought Nina looked great on the show. But both Nina and Christian could use some acting lessons--they both seemed very unnatural. Tim did a much better job when he was on Ugly Better.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think Nina is in but the vest is out. I hate it in general.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Offtopic perhaps, but someone mentioned that he's going in not quite the right direction for a budding fashion designer, and--

--well, it proves he'll partner with anyone; he's even designed a line of 'formalwear' for pixel dollies on gaiaonline.com, apparently!

    ReplyDelete
  45. The vest looked very hippy from the front, but great from the side (OK, actually, it was her ass that looked great from the side, but the vest helped make it look great by being bigger).

Ditto, ditto on the remarks about the hair looking fab and flyaway-free.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sorry, really dislike the vest. It looks like La Nina is auditioning for a part in a remake of "Full Metal Jacket".

According to the storyline, Nina's job was to keep an eye on Christian. All that energy the youngster has must have wiped her out.

  48. i know this isn't news, but damn does that woman have great hair!

  49. Like Randy from Idol would say: "The vest is 'awight" nothing to swoon about, but not completely emetic. Her pants are nice.
Rebecca Romijin's blouse and pants on the other hand... I am having a hard time keeping my lunch down.
And to me she is SO beautiful and cool. I love me some X-Men mutant girl.
Seriously, PPS and Nina got 45 seconds of screen time, didn't they?
By now I have seen that cafe au lait/ brown organza particolor pinata dress 50 kajillion times...
Love ya babies...You guys should see the designs of some of the people in my design/ fashion sketching class... You would SWOON.
There is this dude who's doing a "Pretty Woman" collection and his stuff looks AMAZING.
Robert Best needs to offer him a job as his assistant at Mattel... He designs almost exactly like Bob Mackie. Seriously.

  50. Meh. Not high fashion, but not hideous.

  51. Ooo, do not like.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Add another 'm'eh' to the conga line.

I mean, it's OK. Just. Well. I hope she didn't spend a lot on it 'cause, really, it looks like it came from a mall store - especially with that wide fit on the bottom.

I also hear she's going to be judging a contest sponsored by the Step Up Women's Network and Yaz birth control pills wherein the winner will design/redesign the the usual bland birth control pill container.

    http://www.suwn.org/press.aspx

Oh, coincidence? Right above the press release for Nina's contribution - "LIFETIME NETWORKS PRESIDENT & CEO ANDREA WONG... TO BE HONORED BY STEP UP WOMEN'S NETWORK".

    Hmmmmmmm... .

    ReplyDelete
  53. It's OK, but I don't like the points at the bottom of the vest, they stick out in a weird way.

    ReplyDelete
  54. ps. I gues she's not buying that bangs and pink lipstick thing make you look 10 years younger, and in her case, i agree. I didn't care for the shorter bangs on her.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Nina's great, but I hate the vest. Those big buttons, and that horrible colour, the shape, i could go on.
I really don't see how it's much beyond Tilley Endurables.

    ReplyDelete
  56. she looks great--
a change of job is doing her good!

    ReplyDelete
  57. No, the vest is totally out! What was she thinking? And do I see panty lines?!?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  58. OUT - from the front
    IN - from the side

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hard to tell from the pictures you posted, but from what I can see, I don't like it.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm not crazy about the vests -- and I'm a fan of vests usually. But I agree that anything would look chic next to Rebecca in that outfit from hell. Yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I like the blouse that Rebecca Romijin is wearing, but not the pants that fit tight to the knee and then flair out. I think it would look a lot better with a longish peg skirt with a high wide waistband.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Rebecca Romaine's outfit was totally FUG...
She looked like she had 2 major tumors growing out of her shoulders...
Nina's vest was sweet... makeup: washed out and her acting was very week.. she should stick with being the PR bitch that we love..

    ReplyDelete
  63. How can Nina's acting be that bad when she's playing herself? She's Nina playing Nina.

Anyway, I'm guessing Rebecca's and the other girl's outfits might have been a joke to PR fans cause of the puffy sleeves?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Nina looks great. Is it me, or does Rebecca R. sport a "crazy crotch" in the 2nd still?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oops, make that an "insane" crotch. How quickly we forget.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I forgot to say babies...
The best dressed award for that episode went to....
The guy who plays Ugly Betty's boss.
His suits, shirts and ties are immaculate.
When womenswear becomes tragic, I always find solace in good menswear...
One year in the late 80's fashion sucked so much, I wore nothing but menswear for 6 months...
    Love,

  67. IN. Nina looked fab in the vest. Her skintone and haircolor were just right to offset the beigeness of it all. I thought the cut accentuated her curves nicely.

Rebecca Ramen, however, was a trainwreck. It's as if the costume dept tried to make a bad Christian knockoff. It's not quite 80s and not quite Little House. It's just not quite.

  68. no me gusta.

I completely agree. I actually don't mind the blouse, but I think it could have looked a lot better if paired with something else. Rebecca is so gorgeous, she could have pulled it off with a pencil skirt and some hot shoes.

Is it wrong that I still want her to be Romijn-Stamos? She will always be Mrs. Uncle Jesse to me. Always.

As far as Nina's vest, do not want. I didn't see the show, so maybe it looked better in motion, but I hate it in those stills.

Someone above said there's no need for hips to look as slender as possible all the time. That's true, but there's also no reason to make a woman look like she's smuggling cocaine under her clothes like a pack mule.
