In or Out: Debra Messing

Tuesday, April 01, 2008 by
Debra Messing attends the 2008 USA Network UpFront at The Museum Of Modern Art in New York City in a dress from Donna Karan's Spring 2008 line:

This is just a big "Feh." It looks off-the-rack and it does nothing for her figure. Not that she actually has much of a figure, but she's always been somewhat painfully skinny and we don't think that's changed recently.

In fact,

Yep. It even made a tiny little model look a little full in the wrong places. We say "Out." You say...?

i say feh, too.

hey fellas,

i say this isn't bad (for her). She shows up sometimes looking like a baglady.

When I looked at this pic, I thought it looked like she put on some weight (thankfully) from her Will and Grace days. She was waaaaayyyy to skinny then - wish there had been some network intervention for her.

Anyway, grading on a curve which I do for her, she doesn't look half bad.

I love it on the model, where it looks very '50s, sort of as if she should be headed for her seat on bamboo furniture. But the version of it on Debra M looks ill fitted.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

Oh, I think it's fine. A little off-the-rack, yeah, & maybe it's not the most fabulous dress in the world, but she looks nice -- and what's wrong with just throwing on a little dress sans fuss sometimes?

GothamTomato said...

It looks like she bought it from a vintage shop, like it had a life before this. Like someone had originally bought it in 1961, for a week at The Concord, and it ended up in the thrift shop bin after her kids came to clean out her apartment.

But, I think it's the waistband the ruins it. What is that, burlap?

The word "frum" comes to mind. At first I thought it was the camera angle in photo #1, but no, it wasn't.

That sash thing is weird. A sash, belt, whatever should make a person's waist look smaller. This one makes even the model's waist look big!

Anonymous said...

Out. What is that a cork belt?

Lilithcat said...

I meant "frump", not "frum", which is something else entirely. If anyone thought I meant that seriously, I apologize. It was a typo - my posting finger moved faster than my editing eyes.

Anonymous said...

bad hips. bleh. it does look better on the runway than on her standing-still figure, though.

kath said...

I say out, but that might be more because I can't stand Debra Messing than her outfit. Sorry to the Debra Messing Fans out there!

Anonymous said...

I say out. It's just not that pretty of a dress anyway.

La Loca said...

The skirt is a horrible length. If it was floor-length or above the knee it'd be more chic.

K said...

I say "out." The top of that dress is horrible! The color is also highly unflattering.

I don't know why her hair is always a mess. Give me something sleeker, even flat ponytail is a lot better than what she has going on.

Suzanne said...

Out.
Wrong color for her too....

Anonymous said...

That albino looking model is scaring the crap out of me.

Anonymous said...

that's a good looking dress though

Anonymous said...

The way the embroidery/needlework embellishments on the bodice falls makes her boobies look a little out of kilter . . . very Rami asymetrical breasts.

Anonymous said...

Out. It really doesn't look special, in any way.

Anonymous said...

I'm ambivalent. It looks like no thought went into it.

I've got no problems with dressing simply but this dress doesn't really do anything for her at all.

Bittybis said...

The skirt is too full and too long.

Mom said...

That from-above angle is never flattering for a photograph -- it would make anyone look like she had cankles. But the dress IS a feh. She (and DK) can do better.

gloria said...

First thought was that color with the hair - no. Not the right dress for her - or the model for that matter.
BUT. At least she is standing up straight like a strong woman and not either in that weird cross leg thing or the little girl shuffle.
I'll forgive the dress for the pose.

gloria said...

OK - should read "not in" without the "either." Never could proofread...(not that anyone cares for heaven sake)

I think Debra looks healthier than usual. The dress is kind of summery for March, but it looks alright.
Also the thing they all do, jutting the head forward for a picture, kind of foreshortens the body.
And lastly, God, I hope nobody ever posts a picture of a model wearing the same dress as me, side by side.

cb said...

why would a woman with hair her color wear a dress in that particular shade of red/orange? it looks oogly.

can't say i'm crazy about the dress. the burlap-ish belt-thing is a big problem.

and i'm clearly in PR withdrawal: i had a dream the other night that I was hanging out with Chris (and he was totally awesome, in the dream)!

Anonymous said...

Not out, but not amazing.

It's not a fashion disaster, but nothing that memorable either.

I think she looks pretty nice in the dress. So In, if only because she looks pretty good.

Anonymous said...

To paraphrase MK, it looks like it was made from Scarlett O'Hara's curtains.

Her wardrobe in The Starter Wife was pretty fabulous. Almost made me wish I was flat-chested and could wear those deep-V, backless dresses.

Hutchlover said...

Not a bad dress, but not the right one for Ms. Messing.

I think it looks great on the model, giving her an ethereal look.

carmelita said...

I like the dress, but agree that the angle the photo was taken from is not very flattering. Plus, take your hands off your hips, honey! That pose really adds to the frump factor—not graceful looking at all.

Rainwood said...

Not a great color on her, the boob flowers give her titscrepancy, and the length hits her at the wrong spot. Tim could have told her that. So not a fabulous look.

For awhile, Debra dressed almost flawlessly on the red carpet but then started to go off the rails a good portion of the time. I don't know if she changed stylists or started dressing herself, but she has a lot more misses than she used to.

FashionFanatic said...

I actually think it looks better on Debra, but I still hate it, though.

TigerYogiji said...

Ack! Out.

Anonymous said...

Redheads shouldn't wear red. If the dress were in the blue-green end of the spectrum, it would be better for her. It's a nice enough design (nothing WOW, just "nice enough"), although the skirt hem seems to hit at the wrong place somehow.

Anonymous said...

I loooooooove her so much, I think she always look beautiful.

Anonymous said...

Not the most flattering dress, but it's nice to see her in something besides a deep v. She looks like she actually has a chest here. The deep v's emphasize how little chest she has, and actually make her look flatter than she is!

Gorgeous Things said...

Pfeh. It doesn't make it in, and it's not heinous enough to be out. It is what it is, which isn't much.

Feh about captures it. I actually like the dress. It looks charming on the model. Not so much on Debra, and I can't figure out if that's because the color doesn't suit her, or because those big, heavy hanks of dyed hair hanging down the sides of her face completely ruin the look of the dress.

Anonymous said...

phantomminuet, I think you hit on something. The hair. Also, it's the posture.

Head and shoulders back, hair tied back, and this could have looked more elegant which I think is the intent of the dress. Her massive hair hanging down seems to be drawing the whole effect down.

Brooklyn Bomber said...

As a redhead, I think it's ridiculous to say redheads should never wear red. And someone else said Debra's hair looks messy. Huh? It may not look like a Pantene commercial but it's hardly a mess.

I still say the dress isn't such a crime, though the belt sucks.

Hello, Forever 21!

But what, may I ask, is so wrong with big hips (even if it's only an illusion of the garment)?

Gidget Bananas said...

That midriff band is very odd. And damn, I hate 90% of strapless dresses because they just don't fit right. So I say, double the "feh" and out!

Anonymous said...

Bad pose, too long for Ms Messing. I liked the color though, even on her.

Anonymous said...

Meh (just as a diversion from feh). I hate red and orange, dress is okay, but not wonderful. It's something Steven Rosengard would design.

theminx said...

Why does having curves (or wearing clothes that give the appearance of having them) make a woman "full in the wrong places?" Those are the *right* places guys! (A woman with a crotch bulge might be an example of being full in the *wrong* places.)

Save_The_Hobbit said...

I watch Will & Grace every night, so i'm used to seeing how attrociously Grace dressed. I think Debra Messing looks pretty good in this...the band is a bit big though. It's not a "killer" dress by any means, but it's nice.

Unknown said...

I don't mind it. It's still a nice dress, even if it doesn't have the "wow" factor. And besides, I would say she's "in", only because if you were to put her up against that outfit you posted recently with Sarah Jessica Parker...oh baby, compared to that, she's WAY in. At least she has the dignity not to be wearing something inappropriate. It might not have pizzazz, but at least it's socially acceptable!

Anonymous said...

i think it makes debra look much shorter than what she really is. the skirt is just too full.

GothamTomato said...

" Anonymous said...

It's not the dress that makes her look shorter. It's the wide angle lens that the photographer is using.

The overuse of wide angle lenses, at close range, by paparazi is the reason so many people look like turnips on these little red carpets.

I like the jaunty slightly off-kilter look of the waistband on the model. On Debra it's just kind of so-so. And someone could use a steam iron....

Susan from the Pacific Northwest said...

I like it.

We designed better looking dresses in my Home Ec class in 1962.

Bill said...

It reminded me of Annie Potts as Iona in "Pretty in Pink."

Maybe Debra will turn it upside down, do some clever cutting and stitching and make an even worse dress out of it just like Molly Rinwald's Andie Walsh did in the movie!

Anonymous said...

A visit to the tailor before wearing the dress would have served her well, it simply doesn't fit. It is too big and is doing nothing for her otherwise svelte figure.

Christina said...

OMG her shoes!!! Xo I can't even look at them!

Anonymous said...

A great big old OUT!! What is she wearing? Curtains? That dress looks like the drapes in my Aunt Mildred's dining room. What a nightmare.

That just goes to show, if you slap a designer label on it, someone will wear it. No matter how crappy it looks. A fool and her money are soon parted.

Thombeau said...

What an odd choice for her. Did her stylist have the day off?

Anonymous said...

You know, I think it's just lovely. A pretty color, unusual obi-type belt, and it looks very pretty on her.

Let's stop this nitpicking and eliminate what is really killing fashion: ANOREXIC MODELS!!!

Erin said...

i'm actually generally a big fan of full skirts, but this one wasn't cut well, and hits her at the single worst spot it could-- that six inch range of calf that can make any woman look short.

Doris Day just phoned from the set of The Glass Bottom Boat circa 1966. She'd like her dress back...

i say it makes her look like she's got stumpy midget legs.

No offense to Debra and Donna, whose stuff I LOVE on occassion, because it is forgiving and wearable and architectural, this is kind of blah...
I have seen this silhouette ('50's style) done better AND way cheaper by again, Isaac Mizrahi.
I did a similarly silhouetted dress last year in white cotton pique with a red and white gingham collar (it has a halter neckline vs the ubiquitous strapless) with a ladybug applique made of gingham, leather, buttons and edged with clear zippers and a broderie anglaise trim. My Moschino/DVF/Sebellia tribute..LOL
It was a bitch to put in all the darts and tailor it for my boobalicious figure and not get titscrepancy or puckers since it is WHITE...LOL
This silhouette is actually really flattering on women with hips and small ( to proportion) waists and nice booberage because in highlights the hourglass shape.
The colour and the waist treatment of this one, kind of leave me tepid for how much the dress probably cost. But I have killer DK pieces in my closet, including a beaded cardi that Queen Latifah wore on the movie "Last Holiday" ( on the last scene under the denim chef coat which I also own...:-)
So I will let this one slide...
Love ya,
Milla

looks kind of cheap, like something i could have bought at j.c. penny's.

Not even a beautiful woman can make that dress look good. Ditto feh.

lisasabatier said...

Out, and I am still mad at her about the Chloe thing.

Lisa said...

For Debra Messing? I think she looks better than ever but I must agree, she looks out. Something makes me think I saw a dress like that in the 90's.

Eliza said...

I think it's rather pretty...and a good color too. Maybe if the girl wouldn't slouch so much it would look better!

I really dislike reds and most oranges on redheads...it makes their hair look dull instead of highlighting it with a contrasting color in any of the green and blue ranges.

Anonymous said...

I think DM looks human for once.
So it's in because looking human is a good thing.

Anonymous said...

The target on her left breast distracts me from seeing anything else about the dress. The titscrepancy is purely superficial but annoying. Actually, it doesn't look nearly as bad on her as many things I have seen her wear. That's why I was appalled when she was a judge on PR. If your judge has no taste, how can they make the right decision?

Anonymous said...

There's nothing outstanding about this dress. Nothing.

Anonymous said...

Bleh. Would it have killed Donna Karan to give the bodice a little architecture? It looks like her breasts have been bound. The model, too.

I actually like the full skirt and cinched waist, but everything else sucks--bodice, color, fabric, weird tree-bark belt. Yuck.

Happy Mama to Three said...

It isn't horrible. But the top has some assymetrical thing going on that doesn't look good on either the model or D.M. Maybe that is just me who sees it but with no boobs on either one of them it looks blech. With the highly contrasting belt it only accentuates it. Ah well, they can't all be winners.

re: "a woman looking full in the wrong places."

What's wrong with looking full or curves on: (a) a woman (b) a woman wearing a 50's-inspired dress with a full-skirt (c) DM showing the few curves that she has???

OT: The dress is simply, "meh."
On the model. On DM. On anyone.

Nice try, boys, but I didn't fall for it! This is obviously an April Fools prank. Noboby would really wear that dress.

Kasey said...

If it was anyone else I would say OUT but I'm saying "IN" only because it's Debra "HOT" Messing wearing it! We know she usually looks like a disaster area...mumu's, tacky sweats, bad print, mix match...so I'm giving her props for this.

Anonymous said...

Eh...I'm not crazy about the length...

Anonymous said...

Eh....I'm not crazy about the length.

Anonymous said...

Well, I guess I will be just about the only one to say "in". I really like it - the color, the belt, I don't even mind the length. I think it really suits her - she looks girly and pretty.

Anonymous said...

Well, it's not horrible--a very average dress. Sort of "Donna Karan for Target" or something. Debra is beautiful and can make almost anything look good, but I agree with the others who said it's a bad length and not the best color for her.

Anonymous said...

Haha, I just looked at the date. This was an April fools joke. She just needed the curtain rod like Carol Burnett.

Anonymous said...

I think it would be a better look with better hair/makeup and different shoes. I think it looks nice on her figure.

Anonymous said...

It looks badly fitted on Debra Messing, but I also think she needed to pick her shoulders up for her poses. I think the dress is a bit 'feh', but it seems like such a pretty idea. My guess, it takes the right person to really kick it up, and that is not Debra Messing.
